Judy,

If you track your lineage back through any of the three brothers (Jeremiah is my direct ancestor), the surname prior to the family exodus from Bergerac was De Gylet. I'm working on getting proper documentation for my ancestors William (Gillett), his father Jacques De Gylet, and his grandfather Antoine Deol. I'll post on this thread if I get any additional information.

Bobby

Carmen,

From my research my ancestors name changed from De Gylet (Jacques, born Bergerac, Acquitane, France in 1528) changed his surname to Gillett, possibly due to his Hugenot ties and fleeing the country for Somerset, England. His father Antoine Deol was a De Gylet, same as his father and grandfather Thomas (De Gylet).

I've requested any information on birth/death/marriage records from the city of Bergerac, I'll post here if I get any favorable responses.

Bobby Gillette

I have been able to verify Antoine Deol De Gylet was Jacque's father (Antoine had a brother, also named Antoine, middle name Thomas), his father and great-grandfather were named Thomas, the trail ends there. I have also hit an end of the trail going up Jacques' wife Jeanne Mestre, but have contacted the city of Bergerac requesting any birth/death/marriage records or requesting they point me in the right direction... I'll keep you posted if I learn anything new.

Carmen,

There is no one way to spell the name. Other replies to this message have mentioned illiteracy as the reason, which is probably the case. The spelling of names was not standardized in the US until the early 1900s.

I recently found a two-page document concerning my ancestor, Asa Gillet, in which his surname was spelled THREE different ways! Two pages, three ways. Go figure. It just was not important then.

Use the spellings you have; don't worry about whether or not they are "correct." They are all correct. Citing the source of where you found the name spelled a specific way will probably help, though. Those who have been doing genealogical research for any length of time will understand. Those that haven't will learn.

Good luck.

Kathy

Hello -

I'm trying to find out some information about my GGGrandmother, Jane Gillet (she may have also spelled it Gillett, Gillette, or Gilet) DOB 1881 in MD. She spent most of her life living in Philly, PA with her husband William Thompson. All I know is that her father's name might have been Charles and he may have spelled the last name "Gillette". I know nothing about her mother. If anyone has any info, please share. It is so very much appreciated!!

Best,

Mike
My great grandmother was Mary Jane Holcomb Bonnell, and her parents were Linus Holcomb and Lucinda Daves. You said there is Cherokee in the family? I heard that Linus was full blood Indian, but, no one knows which tribe. Linus was supposedly found wandering in the woods when he was a child by James Holcomb, and was adopted by him and his wife. No verification of this story has ever been found.
Is this what you heard also?

The unfortunate truth is that there is no right answer to this. Part of it is the result of illiteracy, part of it is laziness on the part of census takers, and part of it, especially later in the 1800s, was to try and make yourself sound more important by spelling it the "fancy" way (Gillette).

I also have a large database and simply created a ground rule: if I can trace an individual back to one of the three original brothers who came to CT (Jonathan, Nathan and Jeremiah), then your last name is GILLETT; if I cannot, then you are GILLETTE until proven otherwise.

Just to obfuscate this issue further, Barbour collections of New England list the following as other alternatives: Gillit, Gelet, Jealet, Jelett, Joleet, Jelet. When I can't find someone under one name, I look for the others. They usually show up eventually.

Ann GILLET -- Marsh, England

Dear Diane,

I saw your e.mail regarding Gillets from Moreton in Marsh, England. I have been looking for someone who went to Canada, Ontario. not sure of the dates, or name of family. But on my tree I have a Ann Gillet from Moreton in Marsh, who married Noah Robinson 1823. I thought the person who went to Canada could have been a son or daughter from Ann Gillet and Noah Robinson. I don't know if Ann Gillet is related to your Gillet, but if they came from Moreton in Marsh, then there is a good chance. On your side of the Gillet family, do you know if they lived in Canada, Ontario?.

Regards
Michelle Davenport

the following is from the 'stockton and hartlepool mercury'
and dated wednesday 24 august 1864.

a foreign seaman drowned at hartlepool.

mr settle, coroner, held an inquest at the 'turk's head', hartlepool, on monday afternoon, on the body of victor gillet, a french seaman, whose body was found in the victoria dock on sunday. from the evidence of noah nathan, shipbroker, it appeared that deceased belonged to the french fishing smack 'esteile' of dieppe, number 421. that boat was in hartlepool harbour on the 11th, and left on the 13th inst. it came in under stress of weather on the 11th, and was ordered out by the french gunboat which would not allow it to remain longer than the 13th. on the evening of the 13th deceased went on shore with others of the crew, who returned without him at midnight. the captain
and crew, together with sergeant duck, of the county force,
searched for him, but he was not found, and the vessel consequently had to leave without him. police constable joyce stated that about noon on sunday he found the dead body of the deceased floating in the victoria dock. it was very much decomposed, and appeared to have been dead eight or nine days. he obtained assistance and had the body removed to the dead house. there was no money or papers upon the body, and it did not present any marks of violence. the jury returned a verdict of 'found dead'.

-----
grenville in hartlepool

Robin Holcomb anholc@earthlink.net
He said he had some pictures. Thought it was worth trying.
Sheila

Valerie, I can't get through to your email. I believe I was wrong about where Linus and Julia were married because I see according to the 1870 Washington Co., N Y census, they are already married with children. I plan on taking a trip to Lee County seat next week. If you will send me your mailing address, I will make copies of what I find. Sheila

Hi, I saw you post and I do have info. Linus was married three times, Ester A Gillett, Lucinda Davies, and Julia A Pitts. Lucinda died 25 August 1860, Linus was married to Julia 12 Sept. 1861 in Lee County, Illinois. They had 11 children, three of whom died young. Linus is buried in Amboy, Lee County, Illinos, in Prairie Repose Cemetery. I have a picture of his tombstone. Would you like to swap pictures? I would like to have one of his children. My gg grandpa, Henry Holcomb, was a brother to Linus 1823-1892. Sheila

Thank you so much for confirming what I suspected. In fact, my great grandfather left behind a journal that states that his grandfather, Abel Ferris Gillette, went to Butternuts to visit a sister. So this makes very much sense. I only have five children for John and Pollyfeme. Do you know the names/dates of their children? Do you by any chance have a marriage date for John and Pollyfeme?
Abel Ferris Gillette was married to Lucy Platt (not Pratt) with whom he had four children. His second wife was Mary H. Perkins which he married on 2 Apr 1843 in Newtown. He divorced Mary, and they had no children. His third wife, Ann Clingham, was from Ireland. Abel and Ann had two children, Lucy and James F.
I very much appreciate any more help I can get in piecing this family together. Thank-You.

John Gillet of Newtown, Connecticut

I am looking for a John Gillet who was the son of Eunice (Clark) and Samuel Gillet and lived in Newtown, Connecticut. I do not know the name of John’s wife. His children were Jerusha, Abel Ferris, Anna, Polly, and David, as far as I know. I think this may be the John Gillet baptized in Newtown on 20 Nov 1748. I also believe that this is the descendancy: William Gylet, Jeremiah Gillet, Sgt. Jeremiah Gillet, John Gillet who married Sarah Tryon, Samuel Gillet who married Eunice Clark, John Gillett (who married ?), and Abel Ferris Gillette. My third great grandfather’s, Abel Ferris Gillette’s, history states the Gillet family in Newtown dates back to 1709 when John Gillet (I believe the one that married Sarah Tryon) came from Wethersfield, Connecticut and settled it is believed in the Palestine district. There are several Abel Gilletts and several John Gilletts, etc. I want to make sure I am putting this family together correctly. Any information I can find on these families from Newtown would be greatly appreciated.

My gg grandfather and your gg grandfather were brothers. Probably born in Washington county N.Y. I would like to find out when they came to IL. and when Linus and Julia were married. I would like to find out who and when their children married. If they owned property and what they did for a living? I would also like to find a picture of Linus which I may never find.
I tried reply to your e-mail address but for some reason it failed.
Thank for any help you can give me and again if I can help you please let me know.
Valerie

Hi, I was searching for information and i ran across your post of 2003. I have some info on Linus. I was born and raised in Sterling/Rock Falls, Illinois and my gg grandfather was Henry Holcomb who would be an uncle to this Linus. I found Linus' grave in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois and I have a picture of the grave. He did die in 1892 and was married three times, according to the info I have. I have birth dates on his children but not much else. If you still need info, I could take a trip there this summer. I still have family in the area. Let me know what you are looking for and I will see what I can do. Sheila

Lester Gillet

Does anyone have a Lester Gillet in their database? Don't know when he was born or who his parents were. I do know he was related to my Gillet/Gillett/Gillette line. I have come across two letters written by Lester Gillet from Farmington, CT, to Abisha Gillet in Gustavus, OH. One letter is dated 1818 and the other is dated 1823. He refers to Abisha as "cousin". Abisha is a half brother to the Amos Gillet I have been researching and finding these letters proves Abisha was in OH by 1818. His half-brother, Amos, came c. 1837. I'm guessing this Lester Gillet was b. abt. 1790. Any leads as to who Lester Gillet is would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ron, So that would make Lester and Abisha second cousins or first cousins once removed, right? If Lester is Benoni's son, is there also a Hart connection?
In the letter dated Feb. 6,1819, there is a section addressed to Joseph Hart (Joseph is Abisha's uncle. He is brother to Abisha's mother, Almira Hart) The part addressed to Joseph reads: Worthy Uncle, I take this opportunity to return you my thanks for favoring me with a letter in connection with Abishas, I hope you will continue in so doing every convenient opportunity, and I hope I shall have the pleasure to wait on you and some if not all of your family at our house next fall, as my circumstances are such that I cannot visit you with convenience, I will here myself mention to you that Levia and her husband reside at Mr Eben Thomson's this winter, as he has hired a part of his house--and how long they will stay there I know not--but I think they will not remove to any great distance at present. I have no more to write you at this time in particular so I close by sending my regards to you and yours and subserviling (I really can't make out this word. It definitely ends in 'ing' and I think it's a version of the word, subservient or servile) myself your affectionate nephew, Lester Gillet
Below that, it says: In looking over my letter I see I have not mentioned anything in particular about your Mother, I now mention it here, she is comfortable & chunk for her

And that's it. I thought perhaps Lester might be a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hart) Gillet. I don't know the names of their children, do you? Isaac and Amos Gillet were brothers (both sons of Noah) and Elizabeth and Almira were sisters (both daughters of Gideon and Elizabeth (Woodruff) Hart. So-o-o confusing. Thanks for the reply.

Pierre Frederic Gillet was born about 1796 to Pierre Gillet and Catherine Marchand. He married in 1816, Elizabeth Marguerite Roux, daughter of Charles Roux and Anne Marie Gillotte. Might Gillotte and Gillet been related, but the names spelled differently? Pierre Frederic had children: Pierre Frederic Gillet, 1818, Susanne, 1820 and Adele, 1822. He died in 1824. Elizabeth married Jacques Frederic Tuefferd (sp?) in Seloncourt and had two more children: Marianne Elizabeth, 1829 and Jacques Frederic, 1832. I have more on the Roux line if anyone is related.
Gillet yDNA Surname Project Update

We now have five participants in the Gillet/Gillett/Gillette surname project. One participant uses the Gillet spelling. Two participants are from the USA, one from Canada, and one from France. The fifth is anonymous. The yDNA results show that none of us are related. Two participants do match on 9 out of 12 markers, which is not a close match at all. We need more participants to help us discover family lines. If you are interested please visit our website hosted by Family Tree DNA (www.ftdna.com).
Gilletts of Market Lavington

This John had 3 siblings Ann bd1758, James b1760 Matthias b1765.Their father was also John Gillet. All of the people mentioned here were born in the village of Market lavington in Wiltshire. Emma Charlotte was my Great Great grandmother.

I'm not sure if any of this will help you or just lead you down a blind alley (I hope not!)
