Thomas Gillett 1784c is my great grandfather x3 .On 1841 census he has four children .Richard 1831 born Bury died Blackburn 1913 . Agnes 1835c Joseph 1840 . I suspect more siblings but like yourself difficult to track is our Thomas .Thomas appears in most census as either a shoemaker or cordwainer Richard ,Joseph and Henry appear to follow the same occupation .Thomas is down on census as born in Wesby but on one he is down as Goosnargh .His wife elizabeth is down as born Lancaster. If anyone else reading this is researching Thomas Gillett please get in touch

Hi,

Thanks for reply.

Which one of Richards chldren are you from?

I have 10 children from the marriage but I suspect that there were two born in Kearsley (Bolton) before they moved back to Blackburn. I suspect that the elsect child died as the census records all how Agnes as the eldest living child
(Agnes was born in 1855)
As you say, Richard's marriage to Mary Ann ended on her death in 1880.
Richard married again to Elizabeth Harrison in December 1880 at St Alban's church (she also had several children from her previous marriage.

I am also struggling to locate Thomas and Elizabeths marriage.

More than happy to share any information which I have - but there is so much of it I don't know where to start - let me know if there is any area you want to look at and we'll take it from there

Regards

Vincent

I'm fairly new to ancestry.com and just found your post. Turns out Thaddeus Gillet is my 3rd great grandfather thru his daughter Henrietta.
Do you have any more info on any of his other kids? In particular, I'm interested in his son David, because one source shows he may have been killed at Custer's Last Stand, but other sources show it may have been a different David Gillette (different middle initial and different spelling of last name, but the same age).
Thanks in advance.
Thaddeus Gillet(t)(e)'s son David

Thaddeus Gillet(te) is my 3rd great grandfather (according to this site). Sources show he and his wife had many kids, including a son named David W Gillet, born Aug 25, 1853 in Ontario, Canada, and died Jun 25, 1876 at Little Big Horn, MT (better known as Custer's Last Stand). My brother-in-law found a couple of documents confirming a Pvt David Gillette having died in that battle, (under Custer's command, BTW), however one document -- his military final pay statement -- shows David "C" Gillette, born in Onandago Cty, NY, aged 22 (the age is correct since Thaddeus' son wouldn't be 23 for two more months).

It just seems too coincidental for there to be two David Gillet(te's) born that close together -- both in age and geography -- yet so many discrepancies (birthplace, middle initial, and different spellings of last name). Can anybody confirm if this is the same person and/or why the discrepancies? If this isn't the same David, does anybody have any additional info?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Bruce, Have you ever tried using the "findagrave" site? I found the buriel site of my great-grandfather Lloyd Gillett through that. People go into graveyards to take pics of headstones of relatives and often will take pics of others around them and post to the site. Give it a try.
Robin Gillett

I know this is and old post but I am from MI with a second cousin Glen and a Great Uncle Jesse. I have Jesse's photo, if you see this and I'll give you more. I am cautious because so many people are still alive so I don't post too many names. For those looking in Shiawassee Co MI you will find Gillette and Gillett same family (I'll fill you in as to why) also find Harris and Main as relatives

I can give information from NY to Detroit area to Shiawasse County to North Dakota, to Alberta Canada and back to Michigan. Send me a note if this posting is of interest.

Reuben Gillett/Gillette Farmington, CT/Malone, NY

I am searching for information on the parents Reuben Gillett/Gillette born Apr. 16, 1781, Farmington, CT died Jun. 27, 1863 in Malone, NY. He married Prudence (last name unknown) born 1777 in CT died Jan. 25, 1852 in Constable, NY. They had 3 known children: Sophia (1806-1872) married Clark Langdon; John Gillett (1811-1834) and Sidney Wadsworth Gillett (1816-1902).

I believe my Reuben Gillett is the son of Reuben Gillett of Farmington, CT and his first wife, Rhoda Merrill. I have Reuben Gillett Sr. born 11/5/1753 in Farmington died Apr. 12, 1837 in Cornwall, VT. He married first Rhoda Merrill, 2nd Pamelia Baldwin and 3rd, Lydia Avery. He had several children with his second and third wives.

As my Reuben Gillett was born in 1781, he would fit in perfectly as being the first son of Reuben Gillett b. 1753. Rhoda Merrill must have died before 1787 as that is when Reuben Gillett Sr. married Pamelia Baldwin his second wife.

Does anyone have any information on Reuben Gillett Sr. b. 1753? I am looking for proof that he is the father of my Reuben Gillett. Reuben Gillett Sr. moved to Oswego, NY and Nicholville, NY before going back to VT. As my Reuben Gillett also came to NY, I believe this also serves as further evidence they are father and son.

Gillett & his wife Huldah, both died in Ashtabula Co, Ohio. A gal im my Gillett network has found their death notices from the news paper, but we can find no graves for them.
Our network can not find a for sure link from Wm W S Gillett to whom we THINK are his parents. The notation in Flora Clark & Bertha Bortal Beal's work is mighty thin on facts.
Jake Thorn in Northern Illinois

Location of "The Gillett Genealogy" by Flora S. Clark

Mrs. Flora S. (Wm.C.) Clark, of Elkins Park, PA, produced a manuscript in 1965 entitled "The Gillett Genealogy." I have copies of some pages from Vol. 3 - "Descendants of Nathan Gillett (1) of Simsbury, CT."

From the look of it, it may have been typed on onionskin paper because there is a lot bleed-thru from one page to the next. I was interested primarily in Jabez Gillett (1761-1839), my primary DAR ancestor, so I can't speak for the rest of it, but what I have has proved to be factual.

It came from the Local History & Genealogy Dept. of the Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, NY. The Steuben County Historical Society, Bath, NY and the Yates County Historian's Office in Penn Yan, NY may also have copies, due to the fact that many Gillets (many from CT) settled in that area.

Good luck.

Kathy Hudson
Kailua, Hawaii

I'm beginning to wonder if this book really exists. I've seen it listed as a reference on several Gillett sites w/the publisher listed as the John & Mary Clearing House, but when I go to their website there's nothing there by Flora Clark or on the Gillett family.

I've seen it also referenced as appearing as excerpts in the NEHGR and since I'm a member there, if anyone has a volume number (s) on the Gillett family written by Flora Clark I'd be thrilled to know what that volume number is. I've put in a Gillett search with NEHGR, The American Genealogist, and CT Nutmegger but the particular Gillett line I'm looking for dead ends in the era I'm interested in (late 1700s).

So one of the few leads I have is Flora Clark - if her book really exists why are all the posts about it containing dead email addresses? If the John & Mary Publishing Clearing House has it (though I've also read it's unpublished), why isn't it listed at their website? If excerpts from it really exist in the NEHGR register magazine, why are there no volume & page numbers that actually match a Gillett family on any of these Gillett family websites?

I'm beginning to wonder if this reference really exists and if it does, if it's credible. I am doubting this. If it was credible, it seems NEHGR or TAG would have excerpts from it as the Gilletts are a much researched family and one that really is difficult because of its size & repetition of names.

By the way I'm looking for info on the Gilletts in the mid to later 1700s in Simsbury, Granby & Litchfield, very difficult to find.

Thanks for any leads & if I find anything at NEHGR, I'd be happy to share.

My husband comes from the George Shackelford Gillett line. I believe his wife was Frances Hayes but didn't check it out. Was he also involved in Texas history? Must have been quite an active family. I'd appreciate any information about this family. They settled in Deep Creek Twp., MO.

Hi. Thanks for your note. While I pretty much have my direct line traced all the way back to their origin in France; there are a few missing pieces and details that are grey. So I'm always interested in anything anyone can add to the family history. One person I am looking for info on is my grand-father; Eugene Earl Gillett. I can't find a DOD or anything on him. I don't know of any of my line that lived in Michigan, so not sure we would be closely linked; most of the later generations lived primarily in Kansas.
Robin Gillett

Are you still looking for Gillett's? I am from Michigan and still living here. I know a little about my family. It does seem odd that most of us tend not to know much about our ancestry.

William is my 4th cousin. I have been looking for confirmation of his parents so that I can validate the information that I have. Do you have validation of his ancestors. I am working with another descendent of the Gillette family. I would appreciate haveing a copy of what you have.

Kate
katie@gvtc.com

William Wilshire Shadrack Gillette and Katherine Louise Welch Denney are 4th cousins 5 times removed.
I just saw this old post, so I hope that you are still around. My great-grandmother was Charles's sister, their mother being Sarah Caroline Turner. From the information that I have been able to track down, I did not think that Charles had any children. Can you tell me more?

Dear Mabel,

Thank you very much for this, it helps a lot. Sarah Gillett is my husbands great grandma and he comes from Alsager in Cheshire with a Staffordshire post code. His late father apparently thought the Gillett origins came from France, but I haven't gone any further back than you have.

Louise
