Bartholomew Gilman

I am confused over Bartholomew Gilman. There are 2 Bartholomew's, one born to Daniel and one to Nicholas Gilman with approx. the same birth and death dates. It is difficult to determine the Bartholomew dob/death dates for the son of Daniel. Any help on this? Time frame is 1730's to 1773. I don't believe they both have the same dates. Nicolas' son seems to have better documentation on the dates than Dan's son.

Nathaniel Goodhue Gilman

Seeking information for him please. This is the information I have. I think he is my ancestor but I can't seem to find any records linking him to my greatgrandmother. He settled in New Zealand....."Among the pioneer pakehas at Tolaga Bay was Nathaniel Goodhue Gilman, who became known to Europeans as “Blind Charlie” and to the natives as “Kirimana.” He reached Tolaga Bay in 1847 and married, in native fashion, Riripeta, a sister of Hirini Taurewa. After two children had been born, Archdeacon W. Williams came along and invited him to regularize the union by being married in accordance with the formula of the Church of England. Gilman talked the matter over with Robert Waddy, who was also living with a native woman, and they both got married on the same day. Riripeta died in 1862.

Second youngest of the Gilman family of ten, Mrs. Hall (previously Mrs. W. F. Hale) of Mangatuna, who was born in 1860, told the writer that her father was born in Kent on 25 April, 1814. When he was six years old, his parents migrated to Maine (U.S.A.). He became an apprentice in his father's furniture factory. As there were other Nathaniels among relatives who had also migrated, he was called “Charles.” Some years later, his Uncle Goodhue took him to Boston, where he was taught navigation. In 1835 his uncle put him on board a schooner which was sent “blackbirding” off the African coast. The vessel was captured by a British man-o'-war and sunk.

In 1836 Gilman came out to New Zealand in a whaler of page 123 which his brother was the master. Upon arrival at the Bay of Islands, he went ashore to have “a night-out” at a grog-shop. Trouble arose, the lights were extinguished, and, in a “free-for-all,” he was struck over the shoulder with a three-legged pot and incapacitated. His brother had to continue his whaling cruise without him. Deciding to remain in New Zealand, Gilman engaged in building work at Russell. Then he went to sea again, and, whilst his vessel was at Tolaga Bay, Te Kani-a-Takirau persuaded him to settle there, as he would be useful as a boat-builder.

During a visit to Auckland in 1864, Gilman remarried, his second wife being a half-caste Hindu, whose father was an officer in an Imperial regiment stationed there. When she arrived at Tolaga Bay she was presented with a number of petticoats by neighbours. Mrs. Hall remembered the occasion well, because the donors insisted that her stepmother should put on all the garments one on top of the other! Her father, in 1866, built for Captain Glover Tolaga Bay's first hotel. In 1868, he took over the ferry at Turanganui, but his principal occupation was boat-building. Some moa footprints—not the first to be found there—were uncovered by him on the north bank of the Waikanae Creek in the middle 1870's. When the supply became exhausted, he made some with a pocketknife and sold them to unsuspecting visitors. He died at Tolaga Bay on 29 September, 1895."

Francis Marion Gilman (Frank) was my 2nd Great Grandfather.
He is the direct descendant of Edward Gilman (1500), England.
He was Inducted into the Great Civil War as a Private for the State of Iowa with the 2nd Independent Artillery. His Allegiance was with the Union Cause. Captured, he was put into the most dreaded of Civil War Prisons, Andersonville, ID#1864714. Due to inhumane treatment he suffered the loss of a leg. When released he was discharged as a Private. With the loss of a leg returning home would never be the same.
I am interested in finding out more about this man.

The Irish Gillmans are descended from John Gillman who was a Lieutenant in the Army of the Earl of Essex. He remained in Ireland, and as his father had royal connections he met and married Eleanor OÇallaghan, 12th in line to the Irish throne. This John Gillman had two sons producing many descendants. John's father was the God son of Henry VIII, and the Irish Gillmans were generally Church of Ireland.

All the Gillman family appear to have desccended from Cilmin Droed-
Du who was granted a Coat of Arms in abt. 840 AD. When his descendants migrated to England around 1600 they took on a surname, and chose the name Gilman after the Welsh Knight. The uncle of this Gilmin Troed-
Du was Mervyn Vryche, the first KING OF WALES. THIS FAMILY IS IN THE FAMILY TREE OF THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY. THE TUDOR SOVEREIGNS ARE DESCENDED FROM THE SAME COMMON ANCESTORS AS CILMIN TROED-DU. THERE IS A LEGEND AS TO WHY HE WAS KNOWN AS CILMIN THE BLACK LEG, AND THE FAMILY HAS BEEN TRACED FROM 840 AD, BY THIS COAT OF ARMS, AND OTHERS OF THE GILMAN FAMILY THAT WERE ALSO GRANTED SIMILAR COAT OF ARMS - ALL INCLUDING THE BLACK LEG. I AM WRITING A BOOK ON THE GILLMANS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, I CAN BE CONTACTED BY EMAIL AT lorrainejoi@tadaust.org.au

We google searched Charles Gilman, Oregon and found your post here. I will have to scan the pictures for my parents and then we can email one to you.

What do you know about Cora's brothers Pete and John Gilman? They were half brothers we believe and homesteaded with Miles and Charles on Gilman Flats here in Morrow County Oregon.

It is very nice to talk to you. I meant to say that Cora was my great aunt I guess. She had two kids with Harry Munkers? Gilman Riley Munkers and Donald LeRoy Munkers? So Cora is my great grandfather, Charles Gilman's, first
born. She had two brothers, Miles Franklin Gilman and Walter Lewis Gilman. Walter Lewis is my grandfathers father. Does this sound like your family? Do you have any more information on Charles. I know he was born in Sacramento, California in about 1863. He had a brother named Sameul. His parents died from the flu when Charles and Samuel were teenagers I believe and Charles stayed in California working with ranchers and Sameul was taken back east (to the Dakotas I believe). Charles's first wife Rebecca died in 1889 and he left his family behind. He met and married Agnes and she already had two children that took Charles's name. Then Alice (and Miles I think) moved to Oregon and lived with him or by him. He died in Oregon January 17th 1946. I would love some photographs of him. My grandfather doesn't have any as his father Walter never got over being abandoned by Charles.
Katie

If you are any relation to Dick and Margo Sherer then that is the Charles Gilman I am speaking of. I have been in contact with Margo regarding Charles. I cannot find any information for him regarding his parents names or where his brother might have ended up. I would love a picture of him if at all possible and any information you might have on him. My grandfather is Leonard Gilman. He is the son of Walter Lewis Gilman, a son of Charles Gilman. Charles was married to Agnes (don't know her maiden name) and she had two sons. Prior to that, he was married to Margaret Rebecca Buchanan and they had three children together. My Great Grandmother Cora Alice Gilman married Harry Munkers in 1916 - any relation?
Katie

Charles and Samuel Gilman

I am looking for information on my great, great grandfather Charles Gilman and his brother Samuel. I believe they were born in San Francisco after their parents moved from back east. Their parents died of the flu. I believe Charles was born in 1859. Charles ended up working in SF and Oregon and Samuel was taken by a family possibly back to South Dakota. Charles married Margaret Rebecca Buchanan in 1882 and after her death married Agnes. I know he died in Ione, Oregon. Any information would be very helpful.

To whoever is looking for John Neddles, he changed his name from A. C. C. Gilmam while he was in Hawaii. Don't know why he did. He has a rich and colorfull history in Hawaii. Looked in the archives for anything relating to him, and found information from the Bruce Cartwright booklet on Haole Families from N-Z. No mention is made of his second wife. I know they both were high chiefesses but that is as far as I have gotten. Would like to know his parents, father is supposedly French and mother Chickasaw.

My father had 2 brothers, David and Samuel, and two sisters, Riva and Hannah (who died in early childhood). All of them have passed, but their children are still spread around. I just started tracing our family because my daughter is about to have my first grandchild. I would LOVE to share information with you... especially because I can't find much info.
Mary Gilman - born 1615 England, died 1681 Hingham Township, Suffolk Co, MA

Subject of this inquiry is Mary Gilman (born 1615 England & died 15 July 1681 Hingham Township, Suffolk County, Massachusetts) and her daughter Mary Jacob (born Hingham, Norfolkshire, England 1632), daughter of Nicholas Jacob (born 1592 Hingham, Norflolkshire, England) and Mary Gilman (born 1615 England).

Mary Jacob married John Otis on 10 May 1649 in Hingham Township, Suffolk County, Massachusetts and together they had a son, John Otis (1657-1727) who married Mercy Bacon (1658-1737) and together they had a daughter, Mary Otis, who married Isaac Little in Marshfield, Plymouth County about 1703 and together they had a son, Nathaniel Little, who married Kezia Atwood and together they had a daughter, Lucy Little, who married Lieutenant John Cotton during Revolutionary War.

The Little Family Line goes back as follows: Capt. Nathaniel; Isaac; Lt. Isaac to Thomas Little who married Anna Warren (daughter of Richard Warren, Mayflower passenger (one of my 8th great grandfathers).

Lieutenant John Cotton's ancestors lived in Plymouth, Massachusetts. His father, Colonel Theophilus Cotton headed the Plymouth Militia and his grandfather, Josiah Cotton was Justice of the Peace for Plymouth. The father of Josiah was the Rev. John Cotton Jr. who was vicar of Plymouth and died in Charleston, SC of yellow fever. The Cotton line goes back to Rev. John Cotton of Boston who emigrated to New-England on "The Griffin" in 1633 from Boston, Lincolnshire, England where he was Vicar of St. Botolph's. Sarah Hawkredd, Rev. John Cotton’s 2nd wife, was the daughter of Anthony Hawkredd, mayor of Boston, Lincolnshire, England and she married Richard Mather after Rev. John Cotton died. Rev. John & Sarah’s daughter, Mariah, married Richard Mather’s son, Increase Mather and she and Increase were the parents of Cotton Mather.

I am seeking as much information as I can about the ancestors and English roots of Mary & Nicholas Jacob and/or Mary Gilman. I am also interested in published genealogies and or family histories to gain a better understanding of their descendants in Colonial America through the Revolutionary War up to the present, if possible.

Information that contains specific sources and/or references would be returned in kind if anyone is interested in information on the Cotton or Little/Warren lines.
I have no idea of where they died or are buried.
Children:
James, 1759-1823
Betsy 1762-1788
Zebulon 1764-1792
Dudley 1766-1816
Lydia 1768-
Hannah 1771=
Antipas 1773-
Mary 1776-
Nathaniel 1776=
Abigail 1778

Do any of these sound familiar? I am related to Zebulon (1764) who married Betty Philbrick, their son Joseph Philbrick Gilman.
