Elizabeth Marie"Betty" Gingras obituary

Elizabeth Marie"Betty"Gingras, age 99,went to her Lord on Wednesday,March 10,2010 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living in the presence of her loving family. >She was born in Marquette,MI on January 21,1911, to Ziel and Emma(DuBois)LaBonte. Betty was the second of eight children and lived in Marquette most of her life. She was baptized, confirmed, and married at St.John Catholic Church in Marquette. After St. John's closed, she became a member of St. Peter Cathedral. During the summer,Betty and her family attended St. Louis the King Parish in Harvey. >Betty was Salutatorian of her class, graduating in 1928 from Bishop Baraga High School. >In 1934,Elizabeth married Homer Gingras, and together, they raised 10 children. >In Marquette, Betty worked at Wickstrom Garage as secretary/bookkeeper. During this time, she also worked,at home, for various groups such as the French Club and South Shore Railroad Union as their accountant. She also worked as secretary for the Iron Workers Local. Betty was a wiz at taking shorthand. >In 1964,Betty,Homer,and their four youngest children moved to Newberry where Homer worked for the Michigan Department of Transportation. Betty worked at the Newberry State Bank and later at the Newberry State Hospital. While working for the hospital,Betty became one of the hospital's first employees to learn how to use and program a computer. >When Betty and Homer retired in 1975, they returned to Marquette and spent as much time as possible at their cottage on the shore of Lake Superior, which they built in 1940. >In 2003,after recovering from a fractured hip,Betty moved to Brookridge Assisted Living. Betty enjoyed interacting with the residents and staff. She participated in numerous activities offered and she also organized bridge and cribbage card games. >Betty was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella for many years. She enjoyed being associated with the members and participating in their activities. >Betty loved to play many different card games. Bridge was her favorite. Throughout her adult life, she belonged to a Bridge Club. She also taught Bridge, and over the years, there were many who learned the game from her. In addition, she taught her children and grandchildren how to play Canasta,Euchre,Hearts,Pinochle,Rummy,Cribbage and more. Even when she was 98 years old,she could add up the cards on the table fasterthan any of her children or grandchildren. It was always a triumph if anyone could beat Mom or Grandma in a game. >Betty was preceded in death by her husband,Homer,in 1990 and her loving daughter,Phyllis Maki,in 2009 and her granddaughter,Catherine Ann Gingras,in 1963. Twin infant sons who died shortly after birth, were baptized and both named Joseph. The nuns at St.Mary's Hospital named them both Joseph. Parents Emma and Ziel LaBonte;sisters: Eleanor LaBonte,Margerie Vanitvelt, and Katherine Burchard;and brothers:Edward, Oliver,Ernie and William LaBonte. >Betty is survived by nine of her children: Clement(Carol)of Iron Mountain,Sharon Haglund of Ann Arbor,Ronald(Barbara) of Marquette;Francis(Jacqueline) of Traverse City,David(Judith) of Muskegon,William(Linda) of Traverse City,Mary(Gerald) Messenger of Manistique,Carol(David) Liagre of New Albany,IN,and Robert(Joyce) of Traverse City. Betty is also survived by her son-in-law Carlo Maki, and 28 grandchildren,47 great-grandchildren,three great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. >Throughout her entire life, Betty was an inspiration to everyone, especially her children. She loved every member of her family and had exceptional relationships with each of them. She always found the positive side of events and circumstances. She never said a mean word about anyone. Betty put her trust in the Lord,Jesus Christ,to lead her life every day. And what a wonderful life it was! >Visitation took place on Sunday,March 14th from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home where a parish prayer service was recited at 5 p.m.. Friends also called at the Bishop's Room of St. Peter Cathedral on Monday from 12 noon until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial which was celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the cathedral with the Most Rev. James H. Garland,Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Marquette and Rev. Michael Steber concelebrating, and assisted by Deacon David Adler. Rite of Commital will take place in the spring at the Holy Cross Cemetery. >One of Betty's last wishes was that her 15 grandsons would act as her pallbearers. >Memorials may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Peter Cathedral, or Lake Superior Hospice Association. >Betty's family would like to offer sincere thanks to the staffs of Brookridge Heights Assisted Living and the Lake Superior Hospice Association for their exceptional care of Betty over the last few years. >Kindly share memories with the family on Betty's guestbook at www.canalefuneral.com >Mrs. Gingras's obituary was printed in the Wednesday,March 17,2010 issue of The Newberry News,on page six. The contributer is not related to this family only wanting to be helpful to family researchers.

Does anyone have information about the family of a Marie Gingras who was born in about 1862 in Quebec? I'm really at a loss. She died in 13 Feb 1937 in San Francisco. She married Frederick Manthano Pickering on January 4th, 1883 in San Francisco. Frederick listed her father’s name as Isaac on her death certificate, but he may not have been of sound mind at the time.
My RootsMagic database has 119.3K individuals. About 14.5K are Gingras (or a spelling variant). I am working on compiling a database of all discoverable descendants of Hilaire Gingreau (born c.1641 France). I've been working on it since mid-1988 and have used several different programs and versions over the years.

I never met the Ernest Gingras (1914-1981) we are discussing.

B: around 1899, Married a gentleman named Joesph Durocher in Quebec, Canada? The had several children; Alfred, Laura, Lucille, who moved to the US and married and lived in Livonia until she was robbed and then she went into hiding, there was also Arthur, and Albert and Alva who I believe were twins. I found some records on Ancestry that say Joesph and Roseanna came to the US in or about 1899 to 1902 If you have any more information would you please share it with me. I simply can not afford the prices to stay on ancestry.com. He said his name was Billy(William perhaps)I remember he said he died of botulism (food poisoning) by drinking evaporated milk from the can that sat in their frige that was not cold for too long. I remember this because Dad was anal about food, cleanliness, germs. His saying was "when in doubt, throw it out" and he did. He wouldnt let us eat anything if it was left out too long or in the frige for more than a week. LOL you might remember him from our summer visits. He loved to cook, fish, & clean them. I remember all the guys going fishing, coming back to Uncle Gene's & the fun would begin!! My brother has movie film from our visits that I am going to have put on CD's and preserved. Would love to talk to you all. Dory

My RootsMagic database says I'm a 5th cousin, 3 times removed, to Victor Thomas Patrick Jangrow. My sources are Raymond Gingras and Andrew Gingras as well as the 1880 and 1900 US census. In the 1900 census, his immigration year is listed as 1870.

Thanks... I'm glad to know someone else is carrying it forward. I've not seen any of Raymond's books, although I knew Uncle Andy's work relied heavily on them.

I've input my line based on the marriage listings and will continue to fill in the blanks for whoever can use the info--please feel free to connect to my tree if you'd like to see the corrected info for our branch. Perhaps I'm fortunate to only have Uncle Andy's book, as he specifically allowed reuse with credit and requested that the book pass to a family member who would want to continue the history...

I can't seem to open your profile. Would you mind sharing your name? Apparently, we have been in the same room at least once before, in 1990. :)

All my best,
Jennifer

Thank you so much for the information. Are you related to these people? I was having difficulty linking Louis to Victor,Napoleon, Arthur and Leon. I figured another marriage had something to do with it. What documentation do you have on them? Louis died in 1943 in North Adams and is buried in North Adams Massachusetts at Southview cemetary. Trying to learn more about Charlie through a family member. Do you have any knowledge on when Patrick crossed the border into the united states and where? Do you know where he was married? Thanks again and if you need any info let me know

Re: Follow-up to Andrew Gingras's work

Yes, I am following on the work of Andrew and Raymond. Until I moved about three years ago, I had copies of Andrew's 1990 and 1995 editions, and Raymond's 1994 compilation. By my reckoning, I had a bit more than half of Andrew's book, and between 5%-10% or Raymond's transcribed into my database before I lost the books. I've been building my database since 1988, and it now contains over 110,000 individuals - including approximately 15,000 Gingras (and variant spellings). I've made trips to libraries, court houses, city halls, etc. in most of the states between Maine and Utah. I've visited cemeteries from North Dakota to Texas to Massachussetts. I've made extensive use of RootsWeb and Ancestry.com, among other online resources.

My dream is to correct the errors already in my database through my continuing research, and to eventually be able to produce an online family tree that rivals the completeness of Raymond's work. Since Raymond, through his attorney, specifically asked me to not transcribe his compilation into my database, I have no major regret in having lost his book. This way I must honor Raymond's request - my database will stand separate from the body of work he compiled.

During the early 90's I corresponded on an occasional basis with Andrew, and he encouraged me to continue my research, and gave permission to include his book in my database.

Through this forum and others, I try to share answers to questions posed by other Gingras family researchers.

(I'm trying to find out...)

Based on what I'm hearing back, I'm going to try to put as much as I can from the book up on ancestry--hope that helps!

~Jennifer
looking for information on Patrick Gingras

I was wondering if anyone had any information on Patrick Gingras born in 1850 in St. David Quebec. I believe he is my Great, Great, Great grandfather. I am wondering who is parents were etc. On the 1851 census of Canada, there is no woman listed near him with the last name gingras who could possibly be his mother. There is an Olivier Gingras or a Joseph Gingras who could possibly be his father. There are several siblings including another Olivier, Marie, and Joseph. When patrick moved into the united states, his familys last name was changed to Jangrow (which is my last name). He married a Doelie Benoit and had two children (that I know of) Charlie and Louis Jangrow. Patrick died in 1918 and is buried in Readsboro Vermont with his wife. Wondering if anyone had any info out there on them.

I know my 3rd Great Grandmother Marie Marguerite Gingras 1789-died before 1845 married 26 Sep 1809 to Francois Vache dit St Antoine St. Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. Her parents were Augustin Gingras and Marie Marguerite Valin. I sure would like to have more info on this line.

Follow-up to Andrew Gingras's work

Hello!
I have the first edition of the Gingras Family Marriages book from 1990 (I was also at the 1990 reunion in Manchester, NH, which was held the weekend I turned 13). Andrew is my great-uncle -- my late grandfather's brother.

I know much of Andrew's work built on what Raymond Gingras had already compiled. I'd like to know if anyone has picked up where Andrew left off, and if the records he collected for the book have ever been digitized. My father thought not, but hasn't looked into it.

I would love to see his work continued...and corrected, where necessary (there are some errors in my own generation that I've fixed in my copy). I would also love to help with it.

The family history and the book of marriages were a huge part of my upbringing. Recently, with my Memere unwell, I've been blogging about this history and my lineage, and I've found that some of my first cousins (there are 14 of us, plus two new generations now begun) had never heard of Charles and Francoise...or any of the rest. We've talked about how important it will be to have a digital record somewhere, should the paper-bound books from Uncle Andy disappear.

So...is anyone carrying on this record or trying to put Andrew's work online?

Many thanks,
Jennifer Gingras
(ninth generation from Charles and Francoise, via Pierre and Anne Hamel)

Just returned from the Muskegon, Michigan courthouse & library. Basil & Flora's daughter Zoe (1886-1921) died there 3/14/1921 as surname LeFevre, though husband came to call himself LaFave. Got Donoson Gingras' obit & it's now online, saw his death certificate too: he's son of Louis (1881-1955; died in Muskegon County) and Edna. Sister Barbara's 1943 marriage certificate states "daughter of Louis & Edna", brother Joseph's 1950 marriage certificate states "son of Louis & Edna", sister Theresa's 1947 marriage certificate states "daughter of Louis & Edna". I did not find the marriage certificate of daughter Patricia, born 1936, though her brother Donoson's 2002 obit states she is a Mrs. Uriarte of Muskegon. Didn't have a chance to look to see if Louis 1881-1955 had an obit. These kids are all of Louis & Edna; is there additionally a Louis Philippe b 1899, & why isn't he in their Traverse City 1900 census entry?

Hello,
Just spent a day up near Traverse City trying to sort out the Gingras family; Basil & Flora's death certificates are online. I'm confused about the 2 Louis's. One is in the Empire, Michigan St. Philip Neri cemetery 1881-1955; Louis J.
Leelanau County Clerk records a child of Louis G. & Edna Hunt; Mary Joan who died age 3 1936, & is buried in same Empire cemetery with a brother Anthony 1931-1939.

Basil & Flora were parents on certificates of kids who died in infancy: Elias b 1875, Vitale b 1877, They were parents of Mary C. born 9 June 1884.

Flora's maiden name was Paris

I must agree with you on incorrect information in the Raymond Gingras book. I remember being in touch with Mr. Gingras at least thirty years ago as he was gathering information for his book. I didn't know he was planning on writing a book. Through the latter years I, for one, know that some information I thought was correct and passed on to him, was not correct at all, but it ended up in his book. He also had been in touch with my grandmother and shows a reference made by someone he referred to as my grandmother's granddaughter. The person he referenced is completely unknown to our family. And the information was, again, incorrect. Apparently there is a certain amount of error in his book.

Hi, I'm looking for a Morache and noticed your Jean Baptiste info included an ANNA Morache and Cook County Illinois....

My Great grandfather Alderic A. Provost married Amelia (possibly Almira)Margaret Morache, and I can find info on her connected to him, but not a thing on her before marriage or any hints on parentage... They lived and died in Brookfield, Cook, Illinois... Alderic came from Canada as did Amelia. Any help with Morache's would be a great help...

reg
