Speranza is my Great Grandmother. She is from Gordevio, Switzerland. I think she had a brother named Marcus Giorgi. I don't know her parent's names, but I think her mother's maiden name was Boloni or Beloni. She married Francisco Cassera in San luis Obispo,CA and they had 9 children. Don't know anything about her family or life in Switzerland. She traveled to America accompanied by Alfonso Filipponi in 1906, also from Gordevio. Looking for any info on her and family. Wonder if we have any Giorgi Cousins in the U.S.

this is great. only I have my ino a little different than you do. Contardo (1870-1942) was the son of Angelo and Angela (Scovina) Gazzaniga. Angela died in 1935 in Cantu,Italy. I have Eliza as the second wife of Angelo and not Contardo. Angelo and Eliza were married in 1895 and already had 3 children according to the 1900 census.. I may also have a picture of the Angelo living in Italy. I think it was sent to me by one of Dorothy Schneider Piaggi"s daughters. Dorothy was the daughter of either Clementina or Virginia, Contardo's sisters. All my life I always heard about the 2 Gazzaniga sisters who married the Rosasco brothers in NOrth AdamsMy g-grandmother, Maria(Mary) was married to Geseppe(Jerome) Girardi, one of their sons, John Baptiste Girardi married my grandmother, Delia Valiton. They lived their entire life in Athol, Mass. One of the Girardi's, George, owns and operates Girardi Distributors in Athol. I think he was a cousin or nephew of my grandfathers. Delia and John had 2 children, Sylvia(my mother) and Howard. Sylvia married Marshall Brown and they had 6 children. I am third in line. I married Lonny McBride in 1980. We didn't have any children, so we just spoil my neices and nephews. Boy, if you ever,EVER, go back to Italy, let me know, I want to go there so badly and do some famil reasearch.. Sorry for being so long. if I can figure out how to public post my family tree I will let you know. Kathleen

Yes, that's the same family. Contardo had a son, Romeo, he was my grandfather. He lived in Marlboro, Mass. and I understand from my dad that Contardo and Eliza lived with Romoeo some of the time, So, your grandmother is a link I've been looking for to the North Adams Gazzanigas. I don't know why, but my dad pretty much never knew any of his many cousins just down the road in North Adams. I visited one of my father's cousins in Italy this past year, his name is Angelo also,he is in his 80's. Will you email me more info? You may see my tree, it is Gazzaniga-Woods. you must be one of my dad's cousins. D

Hi there I have a Nunzia Calabrese in my family tree from Ficarra. Her father was Domenico and his father was Antonino Calabrese. I think Nunzia was born roughly around 1750. She married Giuseppe Pizzuto if my info is correct. Ive been searching the LDS films for Ficarra. Would be god to swap info. Thanks.

Hi, My name is Liliana Calabrese.I live in Australia. I have been researching my family tree using the LDS microfilms. I found out that my GGgrandfather, Carmelo Calabrese was born in Ficarra Sicily in 1840. Both his parents died when he was 6 yrs old and at some stage he moved to Fiumefreddo di Sicilia b/c he married there in 1871. I note you also have Calabrese's in your tree. I have the ancestry program but havnt yet put anything online. Perhaps we can share info? Have you ever tried to get info from the Ficarra Church? Im going there in September this year in the hope of looking at the church records.
Liliana

There might be a family connection, but who knows? Giorgi is a pretty common name in Lucca, it seems. My great grandmother, Ramira Giorgi Cinquini, lived in the San Concordio Quarter in Lucca which is near the railroad station. The Quarter is actually called "San Concordio in Contrada." Your wife's Giorgi's sure came to the US early.

Thanks.

If anyone is interested, please let me know. Peter, remeber our plane ride to Sacramento years ago via SLO and the fog? Romeo was also a relative and he and my dad went fishing together.

George, if you contacted Jean, you probably already have the book. Looking forward to hearing from any long lost potential relative. Bill Giorgi

My great grandfather was also from Corsica. My paternal grandmother, Maria Giorgi Segarra, was the second of 11 children. Eight males, three females. There was another male child that died as an infant. I thought my great grandmother's first name was Rosario. She died in the early 1960's. I got to see her when I visited Ponce as a child. She was living with my grandmother's sister Anna. I remember her as a petite woman, even though my grandmother was about 5'7". I believe both she and my great grandfather are buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Ponce along with other family members including my grandmother. We were fortunate to have my grandmother until her 90th year. My grandmother told stories that her father was a merchant mariner sailing under the French flag. I have heard that he was forced to leave Corsica because his sister had been "deflowered" and he sought revenge. My father remembers that when his grandfather heard of the death of his father in Corsica, he covered the mirrors in the house. This made my father think that there might of been some Jewish ancestry.

My great grandphather was from Corsica, but I don't know the exact village... He was a merchant mariner and settled in the south of Puerto Rico. he had several sisters back in corsica, and according to my grandmother they wrote and send him cheese often and visited once. there are many stories of why he came and settled in PR, from vendettas, to love... he was a very strict man and only spoke italian at his house, but the language and culture died with him. he did not spoke much of the home land thus the vendettas stories. my grandfather died when i was small so my stories are second and third person, so they may not be accurate. Hope this help, good luck.

I am starting to do some family history and I see that there just so happens to be a Alfredo Lucchesini that was married to one of my relatives. Would this be who you are looking for? My grandmother's family, Paulo Giorgi's were from the Lucca area.

Hello Ronna, I came across your post and thought I would reply to you. Your Dad and my Dad were brother's, my Dad's name was John. He died in 1991. My husband and I and our four children moved from Port Chester, N.Y. in 1974 and lived in Florida for 30 years before moving to Georgia. Our oldest son, John, died in May of 2000, he was 34. We now have 4 grandchildren, the oldest is 16 and the youngest is 5 mos. Our grandparents, Madeline & Julius Giorgi, had 7 children, 6 sons and 1 daughter. Aunt Mal is the only one left now.
If you have any questions I would be glad to answer them if I can. Take care...Pat

Peter,

As you can see, checking these postings hit and miss for me. I was pleased to find your posting. I traveled to Gordevio in 2004 and got some copies of original records there. I would love to compare notes. My Grandfather, Louis Giorgi, lived in Sonoma California he had a brother that lived near Spy Rock in California. We may be related. I can send you what I have as a GEDCOM file if you want to compare our relatives. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I am looking for a book “The Giorgi family of Gordevio, Ticino, Switzerland” by Valerie Dyer Giorgi.. It is on the catalog at the LDS Family History Center in Salt Lake, but it has been lost from their shelves. There is also a copy in the library of congress. The ASIN number is 0961422246.

We still have cousins in Gordevio, and I met some of them two years ago. I have some copies of the original records, but they are in Latin and very difficult for me to translate. This book would be most helpful if we can get a copy without going to Washington DC.

Hello, I travel to Gordevio several times a year and my cousin there mentioned this message forum to me. They would also like to piece together some of the family history. I kind of recall the name Louigi Giorgi from my dad and recall him mentioning we have some distant relatives who had the original family name spelling "Giorgi" that lived near Mt. Shasta or Sonoma (northern California anyway) . I think one distant cousin went to Cal Poly in the 70's. Are you from the same branch and do you recall any other relatives from California?

Write to me and let's compare notes.

Peter Georgi (Giorgi)
