Joseph Girvan born 1882, of County Tyrone, married to Catherine Donnelly born 1876, of Derry.

I know they had at least 5 children:
Thomas James born 1907,
Mary Anne born 1908,
John Joseph born 1909,
Patrick born 1911, and
Lily who married a Skeffington and had 2 children:
Cecil and Ceril.

In reply to your message, my mum does not know much about the Sinclair side of the family as her mother, Jane (or Jeannie) was aged 2 or 3 when taken away from the family when her mother died. Hello, I was extremely interested to hear that you were the grand daughter of Archibald Sinclair Girvan. My great grand Aunt was his wife Jane Thomson Sinclair and I am currently researching the Sinclair family tree. My great grandmother was Jane's older sister Jessie Sinclair.
I would love to have some more info about Jane and Archibald's life and would love to see a photo if you had one.

Sorry it has taken forever to get back to you.
I was very interested to read your reply. My grandmother, Andrew Shankland's wife, often told me about the boat to Ailsa Craig and Captain Girvan. She also told me about a story about the underwater salvage of a ship carrying flour. I would be interested to know if you know anything about that.
William Shankland's daughter Rosemary lives near Kilmarnock. Do you have any old pictures of the boat?

Yes I am...There were a # of Girvan's on the Medical Doctor and Surgeon posted. Local, military & professor's of Med.
as another source.
Has anyone found any Girvan associated with a Lowland Clan? I have a GGGF who married a Fergus but it doesn;t count.

I believe that this couple lived in the Utica/Rome area of New York State.

Does anyone know of this property which was in the Adirondack Mountains?

there are so many Girvans on here now it is really difficult to know who to follow.

My Grandpa Jackie / Jacky (1918 - 2006) may have originally been known as John, he had 5 children, all still alive and spread across the UK now. John, Frances, Tommy, Gordon and Alison.

Tom had one son to his first wife in Rhodesia, Michael still lives there. Tom had another son Hamish who is also still alive.

John Snr or John's father may have come over from Ireland or US to settle in Ayr.

I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks they can help / point me in a direction to search.

Samuel and Hessie were my Grandparents my mother was Lizzie Girvan. Samuel's parents were William Girvan and Jane Moore they were married on 9th Jan 1866 in Raloo Presbyterian Church,Raloo,Larne,Hope this is of interest to you.

Hi, I'm trying to trace my grandfather's side of the family. Jackie girvan DOB 21 January 1918, he died February 2006. His wife was Emma Dickson. He had a brother called Tom who died some years ago and his sister Betty (Elizabeth) is still alive. Jackie's father was called John Girvan. John Girvan set up Girvan and Sons electricians in Ayr, beyond him, I have no leads to follow. I'd love to hear from anyone who can help trace the family.

My name is Ailsa Thomson my mum is Jean Girvan. Your grandfather Andrew Shankland is my mum's cousin. Your grandfather's brother William and his wife were regular visitors to my mum's family house in Girvan. My grandfather, Archibald Girvan was the joint tenant of Ailsa Craig and had the boat that went to Ailsa Craig.

I am Mike Hall, grandson of Margaret and Andrew Shankland and son of John G Hall and Marion Shankland.
Jeanie Girvan (1880-1949) was my great grandmother and the mother of Andrew Shankland (1903-1963).
My grandfather was indeed a Chemist and had a Pharmacy in Kilmarnock which I remember visiting when I was a young boy.

My mother's maiden was Jean Girvan she is the granddaughter of William and Margaret Girvan. According to her William died in 1942 and Margaret died in 1928. Are you related to William and Rosemary Shankland or Margaret and Andrew or Andrew who had a chemist?

I'm not sure yet as I don't know much about them at this stage other than they were born in Ireland (don't know where) and moved to Scotland - Bonhill, Dunbarton - after my great grandmother was born. Do you know anything about any children they had? Or information about their marriage?

Hi, my internet just cut out so I'm not sure if I've posted this twice or not. So far, I know that William and Ellen were born in Dungannon but later moved to Glasgow. William's father was John who was a chimney sweep in Dungannon. Do you think they could be the same people?

I am trying to find info about a Robert Girvan. I know he died between 1905 and 1919 because he on my Great Grandmas 2 wedding certificates as her father(labourer). He was living in Belfast Northern Ireland at this time but I am trying to trace where he originally came from.

Hi everyone,

The above two people were my GG grandparents and they lived in Kirkoswald, Maidens and Girvan.
They married in Kirkoswald in 1869 and both died in 1942, which means that they were married for an amazing 73 years!
Does anyone have newspaper articles or even photos of their golden, diamond etc wedding anniversaries? Does anyone have an obituary for William Girvan?

My Garven's also come from Ayrshire. My 2x great grandfather is John Garven b1849 Corsford Farm, Ayrshire.

He married Isabella Smith b1859 Ferry Road Head, Ayr near Johnstone.

I am replying to an old query and am not sure you are still interested in information by I have some. My 2x great Grandfathers in my mother's maternal line are:

John Garven(son of James b1815) born 1849 in Ayrshire, Scotland
James Amos Dalgliesh(son of James b1812) born 1840 in Ontario

John's daughter Jane(Jean)Barbour Garven(born 1882 in Kilwinning, Scotland) married Adam Dalgliesh(born 1870 in Ontario)in 1910.

My guess is that the relation is somewhere within these families, but I will ask my g'ma if she is familiar with the names (she being one of the last 2 living children of James Dalgliesh.

Dear All, I am looking for help in tracing part of my Grandfathers (William Henry Girvin) history. He was born aound 1858, near Derriaghy - christened in Derriaghy 23 May 1858 at Maghealeeve (the certificate is hard to read, but this is what it looks like) - married Isabella McIver on 6th June 1885 at St Annes in Belfast (and lived at 33 Combermere St Belfast). His father ws James Girvin. WH died on 16th January 1932 at 51 Lisburn Road, Belfast, and I have been led to believe that he ws buried in Derriaghy graveyard. He served in the Canadian Expeditionay Force in WW1, but I believe that he was in the British army before that (and that he served in Egypt).
Can anyone throw any light on this?. Is there a chance that anyone might be related? Thanks, Arthur

I am interested in finding out ANY information on one of my ancestors (ggg grandparents) Robert Girvan and Agnes McMillan. I don't know much about their parents or any other relatives prior.

Robert was born in 1830 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and died in 1911 in Bombala, NSW, Australia at age 81.

Agnes was born in 1829 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland and died in 1910 in Bombala, NSW, Australia at age 81.

They married on May 4, 1849 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.

If anybody has any information it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe our lines connect in some way?
