Oh wow you have made my day, I could not work out what happened to Lewis... It would make sense that they anglicised their name. Yes Antonios father was Guiseppe but I so far have not been able to track them back further than that. Esther's father was Isaac Cannell which is a Huguenot family. My email is velord99@googlemail.com if you would like to swop info etc. Vicky.

Hi reading your description then it sounds like your great great great grandparents are also mine. Antonio and Esther also had a son Lewis Guiliani who was married to a Martha Hamlett. Lewis (also known as Luigi) had Hesther (died aged 10), Thomas (my great uncle Tom)Twin boy of Thomas who died at birth and My grandfather Lewis John Williams (at some point Gt Grandfather Luigi anglisised their name) Lewis John Williams married Ellen Bright and They had one son, Roger Williams (my father)Roger Married Marguerite Magee and they have 2 children (Me - Elizabeth Ann) and my brother David John. I married Timothy Cremer and we have two children - Rebekah Anne Cremer and Joshua John Cremer. My brother David John Williams married Sarah Pain.

I also understand that Antonio's father was Guiesppi and Esther's father was Issac Cannell

My great grandmother was Virginia Guiliani, her immigration papers say she came from Dambel, Austria, she too always insisted she was Austrian. I am trying to find any ties to her there seeking family line, we have no other information except she was married to Joseph Guiliani, had a daughter named Rosa (my grandmother) and her maiden name may have been Fabiano

I think we do have an ancestor in common, Domenico Giuliani. My grandfather was Ferdinand Giuliani married to Mary Cacciari (different spelling but probably the same person).
Also, Domenico's first wife's name I have as Clorinda, not Clotilda. I have had the marriage record transcribed by an Italian researcher, which was October 22, 1871 in Quiesa. His second wife was Mariucca. I imagine Clorinda died and he was left with two small children, so he remarried her sister, Mariucca. That was not that unusual back then.
Do you have birth information on the five children?
Margie Lauer
margie.lauer@gmail.com

Yes actually. Domenico Giuliani and Clotilda Consani had two children. Ferdinand and Carolina. Domenico then married Clotilda's sister Mariuccia and had 3 more children (one of whom is my great grandmother.) The two of them raised all 5. Though why is a mystery to me. Ferdinand married Mary Chacari and their children (and if my puzzle is correct, one of your parents is included here) are Albert, Ferdinand, Sylvia, and Victorine.

Hi Eleanor We do indeed have the same family. I do not have the Giulianis on my tree on this site but I have them all on a tree on Genes reunited. My connection to the family is via marriage and is as follows.

Carlo (your Grandfather) was the son of Carlo Giuliani and Angiolino Minghella. Angiolina (Circa 1861 - 1917) was the daughter of Francesco Minghella and Nicolina Ferri who may have come from Caserta in the Naples region of Italy. There is a sad story regarding the family as they had set off from Italy to start a new life in Scotland and arrived in Paris when the seige of Paris occurred (sometime between September 19, 1870 – January 28, 1871) Wherever they had been staying Francesco had gone to get food and was never seen again. Angiolina never new if he had a bandoned them or if he had been killed. Its not known if Nicolina continued to travel to Scotland on her own with her children or if she returned to Italy before finally coming over here we may never know. Regarding her children I have found 2 children Angiolina c 1861 (Your Great Grandmother) and Cosimo Minghella c 1865 on the 1891 census one member of the household a widower was shown as a son in law so she may have had another daughter. As Nicolina never knew what happened to Francesco this may be why she listed herself as a spinster on her later marriage certificate to Archangelo Pacitti as she had no proof she was a widow and the marriage may not have been allowed to go ahead. Nicolina and Archangelo Pacitti had one son Anthony Pacitti born 1882 ans I am in contact with his descendants in Australia. It was only when I found her death certificate that I was able to confirm that she was one in the same person.

Angiolina's brother Cosimo married a Christina Capaldi in Naples Italy in 1886 and their son Francesca Minghella 1890 married Marion Shaw the sister of my Great Grandmother in 1923. Theri son My Uncle Frank Minghella born 1925 told me the story about his Great Grandmother and the sad loss of her first husband.

Regarding the Guliani's they do indeed link to Barga Carlo's younger brother Amedes born 1892 married Diamonte Kingsbury and they had at least one child born 12/02/1928 At Lucca Barga Giuliani 167/CL 336 Consular returns
Father Amedeo Giuliani Sculptor British subject by birth Born at Glasgow Mother Diamonte Kingsbury
Informant letter from father dated 3rd May 1928 to the UK records office to allow their son to have dual nationality. I also made contact with the Granddaughter of Teresa Giuliani (1889 - 1971) and her husband Archibald McGlashan (A reknown artist) and she was able to provide me with additional information and pictures.

Here is the information I have on Carlos at present Carlo Giuliani was born 06/04/1897 in 11 Great Clyde Street Glasgow.
Hi Stella,

My mother was the only member of her family from Glasgow, Scotland who came to Canada where she arrived in Montreal. Her father was Italian, last name Giuliani, her mother Scottish, Nelson. I did some research and it appears my grandfather was born in Scotland and a number of generations after him as well. I was told my Italian ancestors came from the fortified own in northern Italy, Barga. I was also told my grandfather had 17 siblings?! I knew he came from a large family but not that large. His name was Carlo Giuliani. My grandmother Helen Nelson. Hope this helps your research. Eleanor (Maus) Zuzan

I am Stella Giuliani's great grandaughter. I believe she had several siblings - Adolfo, Pietro, Teresa, Amelia and possibly some more. I have a portrait of Teresa Giuliani if anyone is interested. I'm interested in finding out which generation came over from Italy. From this thread it seems that Pedro Giuliani and Teresa Cardosa could have been the first generation from Italy. Has anyone managed to go back any further or has any more information on Stella's parents and grandparents?

That's the right date for my paternal grandfather and my father's name was Chester - actually Caesare (Ceasar which translates to Chester. And of course, to continue the emperor theme, Annibale translates to Hannibal.

As far as I know there was no Henry, at least not in the marriage between Anna Melchiori and Annibale Giuliani which ended in divorce. He may have sired a son from another marriage.

Annibale settled in Caspian, MI. He had terminal colon cancer and died at 36.

Does this help?

Jane Giuliani

Re: Giuliani's from Dambel, Trento, Tyrol, Italy California

My grandmother was Marianna Giuliani who was born and lived in Pannone until she was 24 years old. Pannone is in Trentino, a little south of Dambel, in fact south of Monte Stivo, not that far from Lago di Garda. Her father was Ciprio Giuliani and her mother was Angela Tersi. My grandfather was Giuseppe Cimonetti from a smaller village, Varano, just up the terraced mountain from Pannone. His father, Valentino, died when he was 2 years old. Faced with conscription into the Austrian army, he came to the States with many others from the Tyrol to work in the woods and granite mines of Vermont. He saved enough money to return to Trentino, marry Marianna and bring her to Readsboro,VT where they raised a family of six hearty Italian-Americans. Marianna never returned to Italy, but Giuseppe did when he went back to Varano for most of a year to visit his mother, a bit before we got into the first World War. On my first visit to Pannone I found Giuliani relatives - one running a little inn, another running a dry goods store. I knocked and knocked on the rectory door, with neighboring women leaning out their windows, calling to me, "Keep on knocking, He's in there!" But the priest would have nothing to do with this foreigner. There are bits and pieces of a family story of a 'nonna tedesca,' a Viennese woman who was wooed and wed by a Tyrolese man doing military duty in Vienna, who came to Trentino as a member of this Italian speaking family.
I was puzzled in Trent to find monuments to 'the holy martyrs,' until I stopped and read inscriptions revealing that these were Italians who had died defending their country against the Austrian invaders.
We still love the 'german' influence on our 'italian' food. Do you still make a big pot of polenta potata? Do you pound out your vitello, dipping it in egg-wash and bread crumbs before frying it - with a final splash of Marsala and a few capers?
On my first visit to Pannone I found a quiet little town, a day's walk up the mountain from busy places, an active church in the piazza, a tractor and piles of cabbages nearby. On a second visit in recent years, I found no active school, the children were bussed down the mountain daily in a yellow school bus, electricity with telephones and television sets through-out the town, and a road that was paved.

Rudolfo Giuliani came from Marliana. His birth certificate and US draft card (from 1917-1918) agree that he was born April 26, 1882.
He first came over in 1899, His sister Cesarina arrived in 1902. They went home in 1905 and returned a few months later arriving on the Prinz Oskar from the port of Genoa on Nov 22, 1905.
Records at Ellis Island have the sister listed as a boy.

Just want to let you know that the name Giuliani is held in respect (or fear) here in Atlanta. My bros and I went to the Marietta Diner and the waiters fell all over themselves for us. We really don't look very impressive and so we concluded they must have thought we were cousins of the Mayor. We had left the name Giuliani on the waitng list. and we did have Yankee accents. LOL I'd send you a pict if I knew how. My dad looks a lot like Rudy but we are not related at all .

Hello Giuliani Family,

My mother is Veronica Giuliani. Her father (my grandfather) was Carlo Giuliani, born in Scotland. His father, my great grandfather, also Carlo Giuliani was married to Angelina Minghella (sp) and I believe was also born in Scotland (it seems many of the family were born in Glasgow). Records are sketchy and hard to locate. My great, great, grandfather was Pedro Giuliani, married to Teresa Cardosa. I was told my family descent is Barga, Italy. I'm trying to find the Italian link (proof) so that I may apply for Italian citizenship. It's just getting a hold of the information.

Warmest regards,
Eleanor
Kathy,

Hi, I am the daughter of John F. Pedrotti in the St. Louis area. I have copies of James (Giacomo) Pedrotti's Austrian passport issued 3/12/1870 at Capitanato and then stamped on 5/4/1870 in Genoa, Italy. It is quite confusing. It states his place of birth was Marseilles, France, his mother French, his father Austrine. We also have a copy of a letter his father sent him upon arriving dated 1/22/1874. His father is living in in Covedo, Italy at the time of this letter. He mentions a brother named Gioavanni and a sister who was living in Verona at the time. James would have been my great grandfather. His settled in the outskirts of St. Louis.
Please contact me thru my e-mail address: Bobjudyand@aol.com.
Judy
Two Rudolfo Giulianis came over from Italy. The one who settled in Michigan came from a town called Cappel. There are several Cappels in Italy so we don't know exactly where this is. Neither Cappels are near Marliana so I don't think there is a close connection since Rudy's family comes from Marliana.
This infomation comes from the Ellis Island website: One Rudolfo came from Cappel, one came from Forenza (this was Rudy Giuliani's grandfather first trip to US so he used the biggest city near his town) and a third Rudolfo five years later was listed as coming from Marliana. We assume he went back to Italy for the death of an Uncle). He returned with his sister although in the Ellis Island website she is listed as a boy.
(This was Rudy's grandfathers second trip to US)

Rudy Giuliani's grandfather came from a small mountain town called Marliana. One of the neighboring towns is Castelnuovo. I would guess that your family does have ties to the former mayor. These towns are northwest of Florence, near Pistoia, and you can get all the birth and marriage records for these towns from the LDS family life centers in your area.

I haven't found a definite connection to Rudy yet - but I keep trying!

As far as I'm aware, the 'ni' at the end of Italian surnames indicate that the name originated in Tuscany. e.g. Giuliani; Nardini; Galigani. However, as someone has mentioned, the names are often changed and this could happen to 'fit in' to the area of residence.

Susan Giuliani

New here, but:

I've always been told we're related to the Mayor distantly. I've been told a few times that my grandfather's father was the Rodolfo Giuliani who came in to Ellis Island. I need to do some verification, but my Grandfather was also named Rudy, which I assume was in honor of his father. This branch of Giulianis settled in Michigan. Does that fit with anyone else's puzzle pieces?

Sorry Wayne,

I thought you had 9, reread your message
Mary Amelia 1868
Cecilia Mary 1870
Antonio Joseph 1871
Clara Amelia (birth Sara) known as Millie 1873
Mary Margaret 1875
Clara 1876
Margaret 1879
Annette (Annetta) Selina 1881 d. 1882
Mary Josephine (May) 1883
Louisa 1886 d. 1887

We discovered using B* for Battista and G* for Giuliani with the only constant Clara worked - though slow and also gave lots of results to sift through. In the end like explained, I just worked my way through year by year.

Jo
