Thanks for helping me find the link between the Agnew family and the Gladstone family. I will look again at the letter mentioning grandmother Gladstone and see if there are more clues.
Other references I have are: 1869 Mrs Gladstones, Rock Cliffe, Colwend, Kirkcudbright.
1898 Mary Drew nee Gladstone.
The letters are at the Ruskin Library.

Yes, that account of the Neilson's in your link mentions Nathaniel's wife Barbara Agnew and her dates. These were the parents of Ebenezer Gladstone's wife Agnes Hawthorne Neilson, according to the latter's 1905 death record, which you can access on Scotlandspeople.co.uk---the General Registry House website. There is also a probate record for her on ancestry.com, which mentions daughters Jane and Barbara Gladstone as heirs. That's definitely your link between the Agnew's and the Gladstone/Neilson family at Castle Douglas. You'll need to sort our who Barbara Agnew--the mother--was.

I have a lot more info on the Gladstone/Muir family but do not have time to spell it all out here. Will be happy to answer specific questions. MJH

According to her census records, Barbara Agnew was born ca 1792 at Lochnaw, Wigtonshire. According to an online tree, her 1864 death record does not give her parents' name, suggesting the informant did not have this info.

Good luck and hope this helps. I checked out my copy of Agnes Hawthorne Neilson's 1905 death record and confirmed the Agnew tie was on her side--her mother was Barbara Agnew---father was Nathaniel Neilson. Hope this helps.
Hi,

These records concern the births of children of Ebenezer Gladstone (1817-1854), who was younger brother of my ancestor John Gladstone (1802-1835)--Ebenezer married twice. The first wife Eliza Broadfoot died not long after their daughter Eliza Gladstone was born in 1845. His second wife was Agnes Hawthorne Neilson whom he married at Crossmichael in 1848. They had children Barbara, Jane or Jeannie and Ebenezer. Agnes H Neilson Gladstone died in the early 1900s. The 1897 reference concerns Ebenezer's daughters as adults--they can be found at Rosebank with their mother in 1901 census. Ebenezer Gladstone's (1817-1854) mother Elizabeth Muir died in 1841 and thus would not have been photographed...The tie-in with the Agnew's may be on the Neilson side, as the only other Gladstone relatives with a residence in Kirkcudbrightshire in 1897 would have been Thomas Gladstone b 1820-1904 (King's Grange, Urr) and possibly children of Agnes Halliday Gladstone Mackie 1814-1877 (Auchencairn House, Auchencairn, Rerrick)...Thomas and Agnes were siblings of the Ebenezer G who died in 1854. I have not yet tied descendants of either siblings to Agnew's but my records are not complete. Am interested in any other Gladstone references you have...including more about that photo. Thanks.
Hi,

I have found a lot more info since I left my post in 2009. John Gladstone b 1769-1825 and Elizabeth Muir 1778-1841 lived at Rosebank. Son Ebenezer Gladstone seems to have inherited Rosebank from his brother James who died in 1847. Ebenezer died in 1854 and left the property to his wife and children who remained there into the early 1900s. Ebenezer would have been the brother of my ancestor John b 1802 who died at Chester in 1835.

My g-uncle Ernest and Jenny were in vaudeville, and Jenny was an actress/performer/violinist. Don't know if Gladstone is maiden name, or stage name. Her obit says she is from Fullerton, CA, but, I believe she may have been born in Chicago. Death certificate identifies parents as Sami (?) McClocken of Chicago, and Gennie Wilson of Scotland. Can't find any supporting evidence of parents, or name. Jenny used several last names: Gladstone, Stewart, Guardascio..they had a son Ernest Stewart, Jr, b. @ 1914. jenny committed suicide 1928 on stage!

John Gladstone of Crossmichael, Kirkudbrightshire, Scotland

My gg grandmother b 1827 was the 'natural" daughter of John Gladstone of Crossmichael parish, near Castle Douglas, Scotland. I believe he belonged to the Gladstones family from Wiston, Lanarkshire, who moved to Castle Douglas, Kelton, ca 1803. I am seeking further proof of this. The John I'm looking for was in Crossmichael ca 1828 but had been in Leadhills for at least a short while ca 1826-27--his daughter was born there Aug 4, 1827.

The Castle Douglas family included John Gladstones b 1802 at Wiston, who would have been the right age. Many of this man's siblings ended up in England in the census records in the 1840s and 1850s and so forth. Some returned to Castle Douglas area later in life--they left wills and death records. They were rather well to do, mostly merchants. Their line is traceable back to Gladstones in the area around Biggar and may converge with the Prime Minister's at his grandparents John Gledstanes and Janet Aitkin. The father was John Gladstone b 1769, son of David Gladstone and Mary Currie. John Gladstones b 1769 married Betty Muir. Some trees on this site have David Gladstones as son of John G and Janet Aitkin...not sure of the basis for this.

Would appreciate any further information or hearing from anyone tied to these Gladstones.

They are Jewish and possibly came to the UK to escape the Russian Pogroms.

Hyman married Bessie Bear in London 1905.

Has anyone come across this family in their research please?Thank you.
I am trying to piece together the family tree to see the relationship.
Thanks
James Collet (16 years old)

My great grand mother's name was Eleanor Mary Ann Amelia Gladstone born 1844 St Pancras. Her parents were William and Susannah Gladstone. All I know is that Susannah was born in 1823. Eleanor married Samuel Hardcastle. If anyone has any information on this family I would love to hear from you as I am up against a brick wall on this line.

Dear John, I have a William Gladstone married to Susannah born 1823 who were the parents of Eleanor Mary Ann Amelia Gladstone born 1844 St Pancras (I think!) Eleanor was my great grandmother and I would love to be able to trace her family tree but have come across a brick wall, I cannot find her parents marriage or the birth of her father. I wondered if by any chance you have come across their names in your family tree. I did think that William Ewart was my William but he did not have a daughter called Eleanor, although he did have a Mary and an Ellen but their partners did not match up with my great grandfather who was Samuel Hardcastle born 1837. Would love to hear from you, all the best, Madalene

He lost his life surfing on his local beach, doing what he still loved. In the early 1990s, Greg moved to Newport Beach for an adventure. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Alexandria; his 6-year-old daughter, Quinn Leaf; and his 1-year-old son, Beckett Drake. Other family members who grieve his loss are his brother, Tim Gladstone, mother, Judy Gladstone-Shaw; step-father, Tom Shaw; father, David Gladstone; and step-mother, Maryann Young-Gladstone. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Post #291 at 215 East 15th Street in Newport Beach.
Hi,

I'm aware this was posted sometime ago, however, I believe I'm a distant relative of William.

Looking at the family tree beside me, I'm the Grandnson of "Kathleen" who is the daughter of "Kate Gladstone" (born 1883) and married "Frank Jones". Kate is the daughter of "Elizabeth Gladstone" and "John Orgill".

I think Elizabeth is the sole daughter of "William Gladstone" (born 1809) and "Mary Halliday". William is apparently one of four sons of "John Gladstone" and "Elizabeth Muir" who died in 1825.

If you are able to send through further information, that would be great!!!

Cheers,
Scott
Dear Judy

I will try to put you in touch with the right relative. Have you heard of a book by an English historian called Checkland called (I think) "Gladstone: a family history"? It is a fascinating history of WEG's father, Sir John Gladstone, his Scottish Presbyterian background and the early life of WEG and siblings. I think it may be out of print but you may be able to find it on the web. The family name Ross sounds familiar in the context of John Gladstone's lowland Scot roots, so there may be a helpful reference in there.

If you are interested in the Scottish background, you should certainly visit Fasque house in Kincardineshire if you are ever in Scotland - Sir John Gladstone's home for most of his later life and the home of William's elder brother Thomas.

John.

W. E. Gladstone

Hello John,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I'd love to get in touch with your relatives who know a lot about W. E. Gladstone's family history.

I believe that my great-grandmother, Agnes Ross, was a first cousin once removed of William Gladsone. Unforunately, she died young in childbirth and I don't know much about her. What I do know comes from a letter from England that was sent to my grandparents at the time of W. E. Gladstone's death. This letter includes family tree information. It's rather hard to read, but I typed it into a Family Tree Maker file as best I could.

I'd be glad to send you this information either on file or paper. Please let me know how to send it to you.

Thanks again,

Judy Boyce
judyb100@aol.com

John Eddowes Gladstone was a first cousin to
William Ewart Gladstone. Their joint grandfather
was Thomas Gladstone -- married to Helen Neilson.
I have eight children for the marriage.

I would interested in more information about
the wife (Alison Hall?) for John Eddowes G.
as that is a blank area in my tree.

Thanks,

Philip
philip@gladstonefamily.net
