My thought on George using the Gleed name is due to his Grandfather William Gleed (b: 1794) who joined the 1st Regt. of Foot Guards at 19 & fought in the Peninsular War & hand to hand combat at Waterloo. He must of heard the stories as he grew up and decided to use the Gleed name.
William (b: 1794) later joined the Metro Police on the first day in 1829.

Peter

Thank you for pointing out my mistake, John son of Richard was born 1761 in Purton, Wiltshire. Mary Ockwell was 13 years older then John which made his Uncle John(1745) a better prospect for the marriage to Mary Ockwell. I'm sure Ann Little would not have been willing to share.
Peter Gleed Saunders

Hi Peter

At last someone who descends down the John Gleed line who married Ann Little. I have a favour to ask which is probably best done off topic by email directly. I can be reached on jeandave5858@btinternet.com what's yours?

In short who do you think their progeny was and if you have your line from there I should be grateful for it in return for my line from Jacob.

Kind Regards

David Gleed

I am sorry for the typo error, this is how the hole thing started. Richard was born in 1738 & his son John was born in 1761, I stand corrected. I received an email from Sue who said that she comes through Hanna, the sister of Jacob which makes us all distant cousins.
My line is through John, Richards brother. John's Grandson William (1794)had Military career that took him through the Peninsular War & Waterloo, I found a website that gave me all the information I needed to set him in my tree. When I gave Tony Barns the information, I had to erase 50 names up the tree an go a different direction.
PETER

This is what I have always maintained and it is nice to have someone who agrees with me. Just one thing, may I ask you to check the DOB of the John you claim in your post is born 1738. He can't have been born then if son of Richard(1738)- maybe a typo? I have this John being born 1761 and, if correct, the debate then surrounds the likelihood of him being the one who marries Mary Ockwell (1748) in 1780 as their is such a discrepancy in age. Your researches may have solved this conundrum.

I am a David Gleed that stems from John & Mary's son Jacob

Hi rayma55, I to was confused until I figured that a mistake was made. John Gleed(1745)married Ann Little(1740), John was the son of Matthew(1717)and Jane Isles(1706),Here is were the confusion comes in,Matthews son Richard(1738)had a son John(1738) who married Mary Ockwell or as Tony has it,Ockwall. The first John is actually the Uncle of the second John. saunv001@verizon.net Good luck

Charles Frederick Gleed 1904 was born and raise in Fulham. Sent to the workhouse when his father died Charles Snr in 1906, with his two sisters Minnie and Clara(Winnie).
My Grandmother Clara said she believes Charles was sent to Canada. We have no more information other than he was between 8 - 12 years old when he moved.
I have traced my Gleed Lineage back to circa 1500.
My Grandmother always wondered what became of her Brother. If you have any news please reply, no matter how small.
Regards Ian Gleed

My email is:

jeandave5858@btinternet.com

I have Ann Little as marrying John Gleed Oct 28th 1764. He dies 1794 and she dies and is buried May 21st 1806. All in Purton area. There is some debate as to which John Gleed she married and she also had a son John who could well be the witness. It might make my research a little easier

Regards

David Gleed

John Gleed and Ann Little

I have a mention of Ann Little which I found in a copy of " The Ancestors of Albert Heath" which I ordered from the LDS. It was written on May 9,1922.

It lists a death of Ann Little on October 28, 1764.

On one of the pages in the book it lists the person who died and a relative. It lists Ann Little and relative John Gleed with the same date as the death. My feeling is that Ann may have been a Gleed and John a relative but not husband. They list Purton as the location. I looked for a Ann Gleed marriage but none was listed. John Gleed witt. many of these death listings. Looks like the church required a wittness from the family.
If you need a copy, send you E Mail and I will try to scan it but it is an old record. Sorry I could not be of more help.

Pat Thomas: Daughter of Eleanor Gleed

PATANT5558@AOL.com

You are welcome David. I met Tony for lunch when I went to England a couple of years ago. Really nice man. I knew him when I walked in the restaurant in Cheltenham as he looks just like my Gleed uncles and my brother. Mine are originally from the Latton area and most lived in the Stepney area and then Essex. He has been a great help.

Pat
