Jeanffrench mentions John Glithero, born 1814, the son of Sarah Baxter and William Glithero of Whittlesey. John Glithero was my husband's g.g. grandfather. John was a convict who arrived in the colony of NSW (Australia) on board the ship “Mangles” in 1833. John Glitheroe was tried at Cambridge on 17 October, 1832 and was sentenced to seven years for breaking into a warehouse. I have found a reference for a death of a William Glithero, at Whittlesey in the December quarter of 1872, aged 88 years (Vol. No. 3b, Page No. 371). This would be John's father (husband of Sarah). I have not yet purchased William Glithero's death certificate. A death certificate has been obtained for a John Glithao, a labourer, who died on 11 March, 1889, at the Benevolent Asylum, City of Sandhurst, county of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. This is John, the "Mangles" convict.
I have other information on the Glitheo family. I have not done any research for a few years. Perhaps it is time that I got back into the Glithero's! I am interested in finding out more about John Glithero's siblings, so hope to keep in touch with the researchers who have contributed to this thread. The Cambridge Family History Society has Glithero baptisms, burials and marriages on their website, - www.cfhs.org.uk - on a searchable database.

Hi, I am new to ancestry researching and came across your post.

I am trying to research my family and Glithero is my maiden name and I know my ancestors came from Weldon. My grandfather was James Sydney born in Weldon in 1899/1900. He was married to Ellen Maude Coleman. Other than that I do not know a lot more at the moment, but wonder if I am related to your family at all. Any help and guidance you could give me would be really useful. Thanks Margaret

I have been looking at the Glithero family of Whittlesey recently and I believe that Benjamin born ca 1825 must be the son of William (born 1784) and Sarah (nee Baxter). Benjamin named one of his sons Matthew, and William had a son named Matthew. Benjamin born 1847 named a son Isaac, and William had a son named Isaac.
I believe that William and Sarah Glithero had the following nine children:
William 1810
Thomas 1811
John 1814
Mathew 1819-1847
Isaac 1822-1868
James 1822
Benjamin 1824
Emmanuel 1827 - 1892
Ann 1830-1911 (married James Lancaster).
William's father was also William. He died at Whittlesey in 1818 aged 67. Wm senior's wife Elizabeth died in 1828 aged 76 at Whittlesey.
Marriages Jun 1869 - Benjamin GLITHERO and Isabella LAUD at Whittlesey. Isabella LORD was born in 1850 at Whittlesey.
Do you think it is likely that three generations emigrated to Canada, given that the death of Benjamin who was born in 1847 cannot be found?
Births Jun 1884 - Benjamin Clithero at Middlesborough (as you are probably aware, this civil registration district includes Ormesby, and the name Glithero was often spelt Clithero).
Marriages Dec 1907 - Benjamin GLITHERO and May FISHER at Middlesborough.
Births Sep 1887 – May FISHER at Middlesborough.
This may be the son of Benjamin and May: Births Sep 1909 - Wilfred Benjamin Glithero at Middlesborough.
Unfortunately, I cannot find Benjamin and May in the 1911 census.
Deaths Mar 1913 - May Glithero aged 25 at Middlesborough.

Jayne
What a pleasure to hear from you and also to learn more about the extended family. Our family history is very limited and I am very curious to learn more. I have a few letters in my possession and I gather the five boys from Leticia and William were William, John, Jim , Harry and Joe. There is one letter stating out of the eleven only three, William, Jim and Joe were left when they were in their seventies and they still coresponded even though they lived thousands of miles apart. Touching.

My email is g.cassone@sympatico.ca I would really appreciate it if I could learn more about the past. The fact that you have information back to 1050 is amazing. I will pass on anything I learn to my brother and cousin. We are a very small family and to finally connect across the ocean is very exciting. gayle

Hello Gayle,
I live near Manchester in England.

William and Letitia had 11 children, 3 girls and 8 boys. At least 5 of the boys emigrated to the USA and Canada. The youngest Walter died when he was 3 or 4 years old.

William's parents were called James Steers Glithero and Rebecca Bugby. They also had 11 children (no TV in those days!). They had 5 sons and 6 daughters. Jacob is their eldest son, born 1822, he is my great great grandfather, William came next born in 1825.

I am not sure what information you have, but my father has traced the Glithero family back to 1066 when we came to this country from France with William the Conquerer.

Jayne

William and Letitia are buried together in Weldon at St Marys Church with their youngest son aged 4 yrs, I think his name was Walter, I will check on my records later and let you know if it is different.

I have quite a bit of info on the Glithero line.

When William and Letitia stayed in Weldon most of the other Glithero family moved to Manchester, England - this is my line of the family. Quite a few of William and Letitias' family emigrated to USA.

My father was Kenneth Victor Glithero formerly of Kettering Northants until joining the navy and eventually , made his home with my mother Dorothy Ethel Loader on the Isle of Wight. I was born in Portsmouth but we all moved to the Island when I was 2/3 yrs old. In recent years I found two sisters I never knew I had and would love to know if anyone related to my father could bear any light on wether he was the father to one of them! We all get on well and hold no grudges at all.

Hi Susan,

From what I know, My ggf Lazarus Kelman was born in 1873 in Kiev, Russa. He came to Liverpool and had one child - Bessie. Apparently the wife died and he travelled to New York / Canada. Still researching but I have info in the 1911 Toronto Canada Census. Lazarus had brothers and sisters (Dora, Sam, Paul, etc...) I know the one child Bessie married into the Bokspan family.

Does this make sense?

Regards,
Shawn.

From what I understand, he married someone in U.K, left from Liverpool with one daughter Beatrice and came to Toronto, Canada. Is this the same person?

Regards,
Shawn.

Sharon
I am a novice at this, and have only managed to go back to Samuel brn abt 1844/45 in Weldon Northampton, I do not have his parents yet , but know he had a brother Jacob as he appears living with them in Manchester, and I think I have found his marriage.
I believe Samuel's father was also called Samuel, as it appears that even if a son also called Samuel died another son would also be called that to continue the name.

I think Samuels middle name is Joseph but as yet not gone into yet

These were both brothers of Thomas, b. 1808, who is my 3rd great grandfather.

Let me know if this sounds right.
