I have been researching my great grandfather and have come on this message. There is a Frances Gluck that was born 7/1856 in Illinois and died 2/6/11. I am sure that this is my great aunt. I have been working on this for so many days that I am going dizzy. It appears that they had two children, Charles and Edward. Please contact me if this sounds good to you. I would really like to know what happened that one of the boys was adopted. I will probably find this out with some more research but it is getting tedious.

Hi Annie: Don't know if you're still on Ancestry but just in case, this is what I know..

I'm descended from Johanne(s) Philip Glick, married to Susanna Barbarine or Babarine or Bieber who had a daughter who married a Swander.

The name originally was Gluck with an umlot (..) above the U which is why the spelling is all over the place -- who uses umlots anymore?

Michael Gluck (with umlot) is the father of Lorenz(t).

If you get this and still need info, reply and I'll go into as much detail as I have.
I sympathize with you!! I don't know if the name & answers you seek are related to mine at all, but, in case they are:

My mother's mother was known as Frances, or perhaps even Mary Frances Gluck, at least up until the WW1 era, when she married into the Yaremczuk or Remchik family. I'm having difficulty finding records, but she may have been previously married or spent time in Quebec. Relatives say she was from Illinois, but alas, no birth or death certificates.

She apparently died during the Great Depression from old age, stress & illnesses. Her children: Les or Leo, Helen, Peter or Patrick, Josephine or Joy, and toddler at the time--Frank--were all sent off to live with relatives in New York, Mid-West, and New England areas.

Connection??

I am looking to find the name of Mary's parents and if they came to the U.S. Mary was born in New York in 1863. I found one item from the 1880's of a Mary Gluck living in New York with her Aunt/Uncle: Maurice and Nora Leon. I know that Mary's Mothers side were Leon's. Mary Married Milton H. Kohn in 1886 and lived in New Jersey. Milton was an exporter, writer of popular music and a world traveler. They had two children: Benjamin L. Kohn and Rose. Milton died in 1939 in Morristown, NJ. I don't know when Mary died. I believe Mary's parents lived in Liverpool England. Any Information for Mary or Milton would be greatly Appreciated. Thank You
Chris (Great Grandson)

Daniel Gluck in Bronx, NY

Seeking to trace relatives of Daniel Gluck, living in Bronx, NYC in 1911-1912. This relates to research into my Schwartz family tree. A cousin told me that her mother, Mary (Marushka) Schwartz of Ungvar, boarded with a cousin, Daniel Gluck, and his wife in their Bronx apartment in the 1911-1912 period. Daniel had two daughters, she remembers: Ruth and Beatrice (who was possibly a buyer for a lingerie company). My cousin remembers that the Glucks started a furniture store in Paramus, NJ in the mid-1930s. Happy to exchange information. Thanks for any info or leads!

Obit Info for Babette Glueck - Baltimore City

I'd like to see if anyone has any obit information for a George Weiss who died 22 Jan 1949 in Baltimore City and "Babette Glueck" who died 31 Jul 1938. Ultimately, I'm looking for a Barbara Pistel Gluck or Glueck who lived with George & Emma (Amelia) Weiss in Baltimore City on Foster Ave. It's possible "Babette" is a nickname for Barbara who was listed in the 1936 city directory as living with George & Emma Weiss. George was apparently a chiropractor in Baltimore. In researching the death records after 1936, I've located a "Babette" Glueck who died on 31 Jul 1938. Our family info states that Barbara Pistel came from Germany (Northern Bavaria) about Sep 1867 and married a Johann Gluck. She later lived with George & Emma Weiss and their adopted daughter, Mildred, on Foster Ave., in Baltimore. Any info would be appreciated. Contact me at dale30809@aol.com or dale30809ga@aol.com or dale30809ga@yahoo.com.
William J. H. Gluck - Tinware Store Owner - Baltimore, MD

Searching for info on William J. H. Gluck family which was living in Baltimore, MD, in the late 1800s and early 1900s. I believe William operated "William J. H. Gluck Tinware" at 218 N. Gay Street in Baltimore, MD.

In the 1900 Fed Census for Baltimore, MD, William is a widower showing the following children:
William Gluck - age 24
Lucia M. Gluck - age 22
Warren G. Gluck - age 19
Ethel C. Gluck - age 14
Clinton F. Gluck - age 9

I believe William was married first to Johanna Barbara Pistel, (b: Dec 1848) Based on that 1900 census it appears Barbara had died sometime after about 1890 or 1891 and before the census in June 1900.

William in the 1910 and 1920 census records is shown living on Rossiter Ave, married to Laura Gluck with a son named "Francis" (ae 7). In 1930, William and Laura are living alone. William is listed as age 80 in that census.

I'd like any info I can get on this family and, specifically, I'm looking for any info on William's first wife Johanna Barbara Pistel Gluck.

Incidentally, Johanna's mother, Margaretha Köhler Pistel was visiting Johanna Barbara's family in the mid 1880s and she died. I'd like to locate that grave site if possible as well.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide. dale30809@aol.com, dale30809ga@aol.com or dale30809ga@yahoo.com

Dale Boyd
Evans, GA

I just was having a conversation with my wife about the LESide and the name Gluckstern's came up & so I googled it and well... I practically grew up in that neighborhood, but just at the tail end of the heyday of Delancey St. What I had heard was that Gluckstern's was at one time owned by Ben Beinstock's father (from Lemberg), Ben Beinstock got into catering business after its demise and owned the Short Hills Caterer's in NJ along with being the caterer of choice for the Orthodox community in NYC & surrounding areas. Mr. Ben Beinstock's son, when I last met him was also doing high-end catering in the Livingston/Short Hills areas of New Jersey.

Hi Donna,

The information I have gleaned from genealogical research via church records in PA and OH indicates Lorentz Gluck was born in 1683, d. 1745 in Germany. Lorentz married Magdalena Krug (b. 1686). Lorentz's father was Michael Gluck (b. 1646, d. 1/13/1690). Michael Gluck married Magdalena Seitz (b. 1655, d. 8/13/1705).

My line is Eva "Polly" Glick (b. 10/12/1781, PA, d. 5/29/1835, OH) who married Frederick Swander. Polly's parents were Johann Philip Glick and Susannah Barbarine or Bieber, married in 1773. The parents of Johann Philip Glick were Johan Peter Glick and Anna Maria Schumacher.

Lorentz and Magdalena were the parents of Johannnes Glick (b. 10/29/1715). Johannes married Anna Maria Herr. Their son, Johan Peter Glick who married Anna Maria Schumacher was the first to arrive in PA from Germany. Johan Peter Glick is buried in the Glick/Hoy Cemetary in Ohio. I have been told by distant cousins there are many many of this family buried in the cemetary, hence, the Glick/Hoy cemetary. I have also been told it is the site where he died after arriving from PA and barely surviving the trip. The family built a church and cemetary to commemorate the arrival and departure of the Glick family to Ohio and loss of their patriarch.

Annie Klein
We are in Colorado now, but my husband still has family in NY, and his brother is in Millburn, NJ. So we get back there about once a year or so. We will likely come back in July for the conference on Jewish Genealogy in NYC. We have been by where the old Gluckstern's was, and it is a parking lot now I think... but my husband and his brothers all remember going there as kids. I would be happy to take this conversation offline if you'd like :) My email addy is lfetterman65(at)netscape(dot)net.

Lynne

Hi Lynne,
Gussie Gluckstern was married to a Louis but he was Louis Kesten. I wonder if Louis Gluckstern is Gussie's father or brother. I actually have a family tree book written by a Kesten that I should dig out for you - I'll bet that has something about the Glucksterns in it. Gussie and Louis had 2 children; Charles and a girl (whose name escapes me now). Charles was my mother's father. He died about 10 years ago. He is burried in Monticello. Charles married Bessie and they had 3 girls - one of whom is my mother.

I am married, have 3 children of my own and live in Northern New Jersey - about 8 miles outside of New York City. I think when the weather gets warmer I want to go on a little field trip and see where Gluckstern's used to be. We promissed to take the kids to the Empire State Building so we'll make a field trip out of it! I can take pictures for you, if you want. I know it's not there anymore. But I'd be interested to see what is there in it's place.

I also have a nice picture of my grandma Gussie - I'll dig up more - I'm glad you are still checking this board! I thought I may have missed the boat as your original post was back in 2003!

Hi Rhonda- good to hear from you! I don't have my records in front of me, but I believe Beulah was my husband's great grandmother. His mothers fathers mother. I think it was her brother or cousin, Louis maybe, who started Gluckstern's. Beulah's husband, Samuel worked there, and my husband's grandparents had thier 50th anniversary party there. There is also a great song by the Pinkus sisters on the Yiddish radio project that is an old ad for Gluckstern's. Pretty funny in translation actually.

There are a couple other Gluckstern's floating around from the same family- one is Steven Gluckstern, who has some cash, owns a professional sporting team, etc. Another is a guy in NYC named Willy Gluckstern who is a wine critic/expert. It's been a bit of a challanging name to research, despite the fact that it's kind of unusual. Have you found much?

Lynne

What state do you live in now?

Wow, I was just browsing the name Gluckstern (it's my great-grandmother's name) and can't believe I stumbled onto this. I hope you are still looking. I have been told for years that my Great Grandma, Gussie Gluckstern, was part of the family who owned the "famous" Glucksterns Restaurant on the lower East Side. Gussie was my mother's, father's mother. I don't know anything beyond that, but I'll bet I can find out more just by asking my mother.

I don't have anything as proof. Just that my dad mentioned that it was possible that she was born in Bosnia. We actually have no clue where she is from.

Re: Gluckstern's Eastside Restaurant, NYC

I was Bar Mitzvah'ed in 1952. The party held afterwards was at Gluckstern,s Restaurant on Delancey Street. In the early 1980's I visited my in-laws at a retirement community in West Palm Beach called Golden Gates Village. I found out during my stay there that the developer of this community was a son of the Gluckstern family. THat is all I know about the long-gone restaurant on Delancey.
