Old post but I'm still around!!
My mother in law's maiden is Getz. Her father was John Paul Getz, his father John Jacob Getz and his father Paul Goetz.

Alot of the family took the Getz spelling but there were plenty that kept the Goetz spelling. My wife's line was mainly in the South Dakota area but other lines went to the Zap & Hazen North Dakota area.

I've done a bit of research and have a nice little Goetz/Getz tree going. I did not find the names Bernard and Jacob in it though. Could give me their dates of birth and place of birth and I'll see if I can make the connection??

Thanks,
Glenn Palmer (GLP0426@aol.com) the "0" is a zero

The name was changed from Ferdinand Goetz to Gates. He emigrated from Gonbach Canton Winwriter Rheim Pf Atz., Germany. His mother, Joanna Goetz was recorded on his brother's will as still living in Germany.
Ferdinand was a cousin of a Gustav Carl Straus in Arkansas. He moved to Memphis later. He would have been my grandfather's grandfather.
I cannot believe since he was a businessman in DuVall's Bluff, Arkansas with Gates and Company stores in Lonoke, Des Arc and Cotton Plante, Ark. that there is not ONE photo or portrait of this man anywhere. He had a family and his daughter, Florence Gates who married Milton Steinberger, was once a debutante, and they always posted pictures of these groups. But no Ferdinand Gates. Does ANYONE have any photo so our family can see him?

Re: goetz in Brooklyn

I wonder whether you know what part of Germany your Goetz family came from. Ours is from the area of the Rhineland-Palatinate, way west, over by France. Our Goetz great-grandfather Jak(c)ob, came from Edesheim Germany. He came to America in the 1840's or so---to Brooklyn where the 5 kids were born. Michael Goetz, Jacob's father, came later, in the late 1880's we think. Could we be from a family of Goetzes who started out in the same area of Germany? Maybe your husband's Martin was related to our Michael over in Edesheim? I had not heard that we were Jewish, but have often wondered. Our great-grandmother (Caroline Herzler, from Meisenheim Germany, who married Jacob Goetz here in the States) was definitely Catholic. (We have a church paper about her in her teens in Germany.) But, we are not so sure that our Goetz ancestors were Catholic. Have you been able to find out anything about where your husband's family came from in Germany? So good to hear from another Brooklyn-descended Goetz family. Do let me know whether you have any German-based information. Thanks so much. Gene Goetz Judge

Sorry to be sooooo long replying to your post:
Martin Goetz (my husband's grandfather) arrived in Brooklyn as an infant in 1906, presumably from Poland. No one seems to know his parents' names. (They were always just Mom-mom and Pop-pop.) Siblings included Jean, Paul and Sol, but there may have been a step-mom and half-siblings. Martin lived his whole life in Brooklyn and worked, at least later in life, in a men's clothing store. His wife was Pauline Steiglitz, also from Eastern Europe, then Brooklyn. I've been impressed by the reticence of my husband's grandparents to talk about the places they left--they're all gone now, but none of their children remember them talking about it at all. Maybe not too surprising for people who were escaping pogroms.....

My husband's grandfather, Martin Goetz, arrived in Brooklyn as an infant in 1906. He married Lena Weinstein and had two children. He was very reticent about his parents (there's rumored to have been a step-mom and half-siblings) or where they came from (reluctance to talk about the places they left seems to be very common in Jews of Eastern Europe). I think we're on different tracks.... but thanks for your interest!

We are looking to find members of our Goetz clan. Specifically, we want to locate Goetz family members who come from the Jacob Goetz and Caroline/Carolina (Herzler) marriage. Jacob was born in Edesheim Germany, Carolina was born in Meisenheim Germany. Jacob's and Caroline's kids were all born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York in the later 1800's and into the 1900's. The Goetz kids were Katherina Elizabetha, born February 14, 1879, died 4 months and 14 days later January 27, 1879; Elizabeth, born March 1880; Caroline/Carolina, born June 6, 1882; Jacob Valentin---who became James/Jake in later life--- born April 14, 1884; and William, born March 25, 1891. Son Jacob married a woman whose first name was Ernestine. Jacob and Ernestine Goetz had four children: Alfred, Rose Mary, James, and William---4 of Caroline's and Jacob's 6 known grandchildren. Daughter Caroline's (Carrie's) married name we believe was Montgomery. Daughter Elizabeth's (Lizzie's) married name was Walpole. Son William married Catherine Slade. They lived for years and years in Elmhurst, New York. William Goetz and Catherine Slade had 2 children: Margaret born in 1922, and William---our father---born in 1924. These are the last 2 of Jacob and Caroline's 6 known grandchildren. Jacob, the elder, was employed by "a gas company in Brooklyn." He died in 1905 as the result of an accident. We believe the accident was at the gas company, but are still looking for information and verification. Son Jacob/James/Jake is believed to have worked at a "pencil company" in Brooklyn. We are sure that New Jersey was home to some of our Goetz cousins in the 1900's. And, of course, the New York area is a good bet, too.

We are looking for our Goetz family from Brooklyn. Because you responded to the query looking for Brooklyn Goetz family people, I thought a query to you might prove helpful to us. Are you a Brooklyn-descended Goetz?

Our family started in Brooklyn with Jacob and Caroline (Herzler) Goetz. Both came from the same part of Gemany---Jacob from Edesheim and Caroline from Meisenheim. Their kids---all born in Brooklyn from 1880 through 1891---were Jacob (who later became James/Jake), Caroline, Elizabeth and William. There might have been another daughter Catherine.

Thanks so much. Gene Goetz Judge

But, I thought a response might be in order because the Brooklyn connection has proved SO difficult as we search.

ARe you still looking?

Thanks so much.
My Great-Grandmother's name was Mary Goetz, first child was a Magdalena, they were all from a small town on border of Germany/Russia. When the town was under Russia My Great-Grandparents sent the older children to Canada. Years later they finally left with my Grandmother Anna and a brother Peter. Peter died in World War I have newspaper article of his death. I know that once they left through Russia, they met up with the older children in Canada, then went to Colorado, from Colorado they moved to Portland Oregon, SE area off Foster and Holgate. My Aunt still lives in this area. I know that my Grandfather was from Colorado, think that is where Anna met him. I know that Mary's home in SE portland was sold to my grandparents, my father and his 2 sisiters was born/raised in this house. My first cousin bought this house from my grandfather prior to his death in Oct 1981. I know that Anna died around 1967-68 because I was under the age of 5 at the time.
When my Uncle Neil retired from Crown Z in the 90's, the gal prossing his retirement noticed my Aunts Maiden name of Goetz. She then realized that we were connected to the older children who had settled in Canada. In fact they had very little information about my grandmother. My Aunt (MaryAnn (MaryAnna)Connors (her maiden name)) at the time contacted the Goetz's in Canada, recieved in the mail a binder of the Goetz family history. I have seen this 1 time right after she got it. If what i have been told is true, the first born girl Magdalena was not my Great-Grandfathers Goetz's child.
If by chance you are part of this family tree please contact me
davmartoby@aol.com
I am also on facebook. I have a lot of information on this line, and I am missing alot of Laurent (Lawrence) Goetz's descendants.

Laurent's parents were Michael Goetz & Marie Eve Doppler, of Soufflenheim, Alsace. The goetz family was found in Soufflenheim records from ca 1740.

Could you please contact me privately, and I will send you a genealogy tree.

boblangill@sympatico.ca

Im not sure exactly what your looking for but my father is a direct decentant from and Xavier goetz in Alsace Germany. from what I know Francis Goetz (my father) Is the son and I am his grandson. I do have contact with the family in Germany from time to time. As I am told Xavier had come to the US in the early 1900 during the war and registered in New York as an immigrant sponsored by the roman catholic Church. He lived in RI. and worked for them until he died. I hope I helped in some way and am interested in hearing more.

Thanks
Dave Goetz

Could you supply a little more information on your GOETZ family? When were they born and where? Were they born in the United States or elsewhere. If they immigrated, from
where? Who were their parents? In 1910 were they living together or married and living seperately? Did they continue to live in Brooklyn or did they move elsewhere, if so where?

thank you very much for your answer.

no doubt your ancestors came from Soufflenheim, because Messner, Goetz, Uhrig, Mosser or Stieffelmeyer are DEFINITIVELY family names from this village !

I'm going next month to a Messner family reunion in Missouri, so I hopefully shall have more infos about their tracks in America and shall let you know.

You are right about their way through Canada. Many Soufflenheimers made a first stop at New Germany/Maryhill (Ontario), did you heard about ?
I myself recently visited a village called Formosa (Ont), where the Messners built the church and school. The cemetary is a moving place with all the same names than in Soufflenheim ! I can send some pictures.

Yes, the main stream of emigration was in the mid 1800s.But I'm sure some families from Soufflenheim emigrated earlier: I know a Kieffer who took the ship in 1830,with his whole family (wife and 7 children) while my grandma's uncles only went around 1900.So my feeling is that the migrants and the other ones were sort of keeping in touch more that what we'd think...

I would be very pleased to see your picture of the former Goetz pottery in Ohio - I really wonder if they were keeping the same patterns for their pots and plates. Here is a picture of my own "collection".

the Bible is interesting, because it's mostly a Protestant tradition and Soufflenheim always was a Catholic village - so I guess the book must rather be a family missal, no ? and of course it's written in German - mind they were speaking Alsatian !

I'm to print your list of names and shall let you know if I found some in my lists too.
have a nice day,

PS. do you know that this very week end is potters' feast at Soufflenheim ? :-)

Thank you so much for your post!
My Soufflenheim ancestors migrated to Canton, OH and Waterloo, Canada in the mid 1800s. From there, they came to Dayton, OH where they started the Oakwood Pottery. The pottery was torn down and a company called NCR was built.

I have one piece of the pottery. I also have a few pictures that I can send to you.

In addition to that, someone in the family owns a Bible with family history written in it. I have copies I can send, but it is written in German.

I know that my ancestors are as follows:
My Great Grandmother, Ellenora Goetz Swain
Her father and mother, Mathias Goetz and Sophia Messner.
Mathias was born in Alsace in 1814 and had two brothers that we know of, Bernard and Fr. Francis Joseph. Two other Goetzs show up in the records, Xavier(1821-1891) , who lived in Waterloo, Canada, wrote in the bible on his death bed, and is buried in Dayton.(may be Mathias' cousin)
Florence Goetz (1805-1871), lived with Mathias and Bernard in Canton, OH and later in Dayton, OH.(may be Mathias' Uncle).
Sopia Messner's sister , Crescentia, also from "Baden", married Mathias' brother Bernard.

On the internet, I found the following family "tree". I don't have proof, but there are many matches:
Mathias Goetz (married Sophia Messner.)
Francois Joseph Goetz (married Ricarde Ulrich)
Francois Antoin Goetz (married Marguarite Mosser) * note: "Antoin Gotz" is listed in the family bible.
Mathias Goetz (Married Ursula Stiffelmeyer)
I haven't gone back much further, but there is mention of a Wendel Goetz in the 1600s in Soufflenheim records.

Thank you again and I look forward to hearing from you,
Lisa
hello, I just found and read your notes and all the answers with the greatest interest.

Here are some precisions.
You are right about Soufflenheim and the potters : a story more than 1000 years old !
sooo, how could I help you ? well, I'm sort of going backward compared to you ;-) the reason why I was VERY interested in reading that they emigrated there just to do the same job they were (well) doing at home ! I didn't know the Soufflenheimers went till Ohio...What is remaining from this Dayton pottery now ?

I'm French and living at about 3 hours from Soufflenheim and all my father family was living there from... eternity I guess ;-))
YES, the Goetz were in Soufflenheim, one of the most numerous family there, so it's good and bad news : you will certainly find LOTS of people related to you who can help, BUT it's like to find a needle in a truss of hay !
Drusenheim is just a hamlet 10 minutes down to the Rhine.

My own link with a Goetz, concerned Marguerite Goetz who married Michel Albrecht the Elder (1769-1855). He was a widower and she died young in 1821.
Any other family names from Soufflenheim in your genealogical tree ?
Now I'm closer to the Messners who are FOR SURE a well known family at Soufflenheim too. So I would like to know if you are sure your Messners are not from Soufflenheim ? Mind that they could have been born at Baden(now in Germany) depends on their birth date, as a lot of people of soufflenheim crossed the Rhine during the French Revolution by example...
well, more food for thought...

please feel free to ask more

I am researching my gg grandmother Teresa Daack and wonder if your line might be related. She was born in Hannover Germany in 1836 and married George Gregory Becker in Calhoun County IL in 1855. They had 12 children and I am descended from their son, George William.
acannavo@comcast.net
