Go to the Giles County TN Genweb site and use the search engine for "Henry Walker." That will bring up two files. The first one contains the information on the children of Yerby and Gracy's children with census records, etc. The file is 64 pages and the information is near the end of it. The researcher was very through. She is now dead.

I just found your posting re the parents of Gracy Goff being John and Susan (Walker) Goff. I would very much appreciate any info you have on Gracy who married Yerby Adkisson, of Maury Co. Yerby was the brother of my ancestor, William Adkisson. However, the Adkisson's all named their sons, Yerby, William, John or Abb (Absolum), so I am trying to match up wives and their families as a way of keeping them straight!

Doris

Ebenezer Goff is my gr gr grandfather. Your description of his gold-rush days is well done. He is the son of John Goff and Martha Foster and settled in Michigan ca 1842 on land purchased by his father just west of Marcellus in Cass County. He married first Clarissa Cady and they had two children, Martha Amelia and William Henry (my gr grandfather). Clarissa died in 1847 and is buried in the Goff family cemetery at Goff's Lakes. Ebenezer married second Amelia Christie and they had four children.

Ebenezer died in 1871 and is buried beside his father John Goff, his son William, and his grandson John B. Goff (my grandfather) in the Little Fish Lake Cemetery at Wakelee, Michigan. These Goffs are descendants of the John Goffe (1649-1716) who emigrated from England to Boston between 1662 and 1673, and married Hannah Sumner. I am in the 11th generation from this John Goffe. Signed, John W. Goff

Goff and Varnum Family Connection

I have been researching Varnum Goff who is the son of the Rev. Abner Goff(1782-1857) and Patty Hudson(1782-1870). Abner is the son of Daniel Goff(1754-1816) and Lucy ? (1754-1820). My 4th great grandfather Christopher Goff (1779-1830) is also a son of Daniel Goff (my 5th great grandfather). I am trying to determine Lucy's surname and think that it is very likely to be Varnum. The Varnum family is very well documented in Colonial America and descended from a common ancestor. I believe the family began in Mass and moved to parts of Rhode Island and New York. I wonder if you anyone has heard of any link of the Goffs to the Varnums through Lucy the wife of Daniel Goff. I just posted information about the Varnum family to our tree on ancestry.com: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/7332421/person/-342775087/med...

Best regards,
Jack Bredenfoerder
Cincinnati, Ohio

Goff or Roden pictures?

These photos are 8”x 10” tin type and belonged to Lottie Roxie Barrett (1890 TX-1964 TX) whose husband was Edgar “Eck” Miller (1891 TX-1947 TX). Lottie’s parents were Madison Monroe “Matt” Barrett (1857 TN-1939 TX)/Martha Ann Roden (1861 TX-1938 TX). We have pictures of the Miller and Barrett ancestors and do not believe these are Miller or Barrett relatives.
Martha Ann’s parents were: Martin P. Roden (ca 1839 AL-ca 1880 TX)/Mary Elizabeth Goff (1841 LA-ca 1895 TX). We have a picture of Mary Elizabeth Goff Roden so we know this lady is not Mary Elizabeth.
Martha Ann’s grandparents were: Jesse Goff (1821 AR-after 1860)/Ann Eliza Wade (1823 LA-ca 1860 TX) and William M. Roden (ca 1818 TN-after 1880 TX)/Esther W. Calvert (ca 1819 AL-after 1880 TX).
We know that there are various spellings for the Roden name but this is the spelling that Lottie used. The pictured couple must have been important to Lottie since she managed to keep them among her few possessions. Any help to identify this couple will truly be appreciated.

Brandon -
Well, I can find nothing that disproves William Ennis and George Washington GOFF being brothers. I have William's middle name as Ennis from his daughter Ruth's death certificate, and the information came from Ruth's husband, who would have known. I know nothing else about William except that he consistently gave North Carolina as his birthplace, and in Washington County, Georgia, the North Carolinians came from Pitt/Edgecombe County. William lived until 1891. I do not currently have an obituary in my files.

I live up in the Chicago area, and am deeply interested in any further information you locate. Please keep me posted. I find that there is very little info in the Georgia area about the 1790s to 1850s, and thus am a bit stymied about learning more about William. I have hoped that his middle name might be a clue to some of his ancestors, but that is only a guess.
Hello Diane, I have a William Ennis Goff b. abt 1810 in NC. The info I have was very close to what I have read here. His brother George Washington Goff is my direct decendent. He was born in Edgecombe Co., NC, which I think William was as well. I have a record of his father (John) and grandfather (Henry), but not sure is totally correct. The record I got shows both born in Pitt Co., NC. But I would be interested to see the 1880 censes to see discrepancies. Any other info you have on William please contact me. I am having a hard time finding info and I am a hour away from Edgecombe Co. If this is indeed the same William we are looking for I am planning on going to his hometown area soon to search for clues. Hope this helps.

Brandon Goff

Re: Goff, Ebenezer

Found this a few minutes ago.No photo available
Estimated Price:
£ Login or subscribe to view price data

Collection of Gold Rush Letters and Covers From California. Ebenezer C. Goff Papers, 1853-1898. 35 letters (25 from California, 1853-1855 and 1860, and 3 relating to gold mining in Colorado, 1859 and 20 envelopes. Ebenezer Goff was one of those unfortunate stiffs who sold their all to move to the gold fields of California, only to rue their actions. In 1853, Goff left his children, his debts, and his farm in Michigan to travel to the northern mines near Crescent City and Yreka California. About his decision to leave for the west, Goff wrote: I suppose my friends there blame me for staying in this country so long but they do not know my circumstances or my feelings so well as you do; misfortune had followed my steps so closely for several years before I came here that I was compelled to see my property sold to the highest bidder and my family beggared or to leave them for a time to flee to a foreign land to try to improve my fortune, so I chose the latter... Like many would-be miners, Goff tried his luck at several enterprises in several locations as far north as the Klamath River, never meeting any notorious degree of success: My ill success, he wrote, is to be attributed to two bad projects; North Yuba fluming and keeping boarding house; otherwise I have been making something all the time. At another point, he swore that the Chines about here have Cleaned out every nook and Corner making it impossible for him to find any gold worth mentioning. Goff vowed never to enter into speculation and never to follow any rumors, but in the end, he resisted neither, entering into an unnamed speculative venture involving mule packing that bound him even longer to the unprofitable life in the golden state. Although he left his family behind, Goff continued to worry about them. He had taken care of them by having them put out to various positions, but earning nothing in the west, he worried that they were coming under ill influences while he had no money to support them and no money to return home himself. His fortune was summed up when he chose to go north to the mines on the Klamath: being sure that I could make large wages and hoping fortune might favor me with a 'rich claim' and 'large nuggets', only to find the Northern mines cannot compare with the Southern or Middle in extent or richness. Instead of riches, he first found unemployment before forming a partnership with two men and earning, he reports, about $150 in gold dust, with the prospect of a meager return in the coming year. He insisted, however, that he would not return until he had earned enough money to pay his debts (while hoping his brother could get the debts discounted Goff's fortunes did begin to look up in 1855, and he was back in Michigan, farming (grudgingly, complainingly by 1857. By 1859, though, he had hit the road again, moving the Colorado to try the gold mines there near Cherry Creek. He didn't do so without reservations, which he expresses abundantly : I fear that there will not be sufficient supplies sent up this Spring, to meet the demand to prevent actual suffering, as those who are returning tell such horrible stories that all or nearly all supply waggons turn back. Among the many good letters are two from October 1855 describing Indian depridations near the Klamath River: all the men on this section of the river at one time collected together and staid two days we now carry our arms with us to our work, It is thought by many that we stand in constant danger of being attacked by them as they have all fled to the mountains and cannot be found. Perhaps the best letter, though, is one from Goff's old California partner in 1860, catching him up to date on events in the northern mines: One article that is in grate demand that is wimmin. I think twood bee allmost impossible to glut the market the demand is so grate. I expect that Shap and me will have to come back & get us a womenn without we can get a cupple sent on by express, if you know of a cupple that is rather good looking not to big wee will say, wate about 140 a piece or their aboutes hight between five and seven feet of a very cind and gentle disposision and knot to paticular in the looks of the chaps that they get because we cant brag so much on the looks but twoo loviner Creatures a person woodent see in a days travell so if you know of a cople that will answer the descripsion send them along and we will pay all damages. The Goff Papers also include a number of items of philatelic/postal historic value, all on envelopes, none dated, but all from mid-1850s. Foremost among these are two scarce ms. cancels from Little Prairie Ronde, Michigan (black L.P. Ronde, Mich with month and day a strong circular black cancel Crescent City Cal. (Jan 11, n.y., but 1855, on a pre-stamped envelope plus six circular cancels with concentric circ. Marks of varying quality from Crescent City; four circ. black Nevada City Cal cancels (no stamps, one strike exceptionally strong, a second very strong a manuscript Yreka Cal. Jan 18 (no date, but with ms. way marking 10 and a handsome example of the imperforate green ten cent Washington stamp (X in the corners A rich and very informative set of letters from one of the legion of California gold miners who never struck it rich, unusually literate and tinged with sadness and regret.
Hello,

I'm also looking for information on Catherine Goff/Huggins. I have the exact same information you listed here GPlank75 and then some! For example, I believe Henry M.'s father was a Jim Williamson. This information came from HM's death record (d. Jun 23, 1925 ). If you contact me, I can give you more info.

I'm a descendant of Henry M. Goff (b. 1845). He is my great-great-great-grandfather. Would love to know more of the information you have, especially about Alva G. Goff and his descendants.

I checked with a cousin who has confirmed the only name they knew was Bull Goff. We were in Jacksonville, Florida
my grandmother was Elnora Goff (AMOS) and she had a sister Lillie Mae Goff. I know my grandmothers mother name is Alberta Goff and I believe my grandfather is Jordan/Gerdan Goff not sure on the spelling based on how they are pronouncing the name. I get 2 different answers when I ask what part of Georgia my grandmother was born in. I have heard sylvester georgia and augusta georgia. My Aunt is trying to find my grandmothers actual birth certificate so I can be more accurate.

Do you have any dates and a better location in Florida, such as a city or county? Nothing comes up in a broad search of Bull GOFF or Arsis GOFF in Florida. Bull could have been mis-read as Bill and as you can imagine there are lots of Bills. Depending on dates and locations researchers will look in different records.

I am in the process of researching my family history. I have a lot of 1st names and I do know only a hand full of information on my Goff Family. I know some were from Georgia and My side if the Goff's are from Florida. What I do know: I believe my Great, Great, Great GrandMother was Known as Arsis Love Devine Rachel Arvilla Butch. Her children were Bull and Julia Goff. Julia married Reubin Reid and Bull married Mary White. Some of the children from Bull and Mary were Edgar, Jordan, Danzell, John, Jimmie Lee, Miller, Elizabeth, Jannie MAe, Ruby, Eva, Lila and Fannie. I know that they had kids so I get lost with names after that. If anything rings a bell to your family members please reply.

My dad took me to see Alan and Eric not very long after Eric was born. I want to say that was in Oxnard but could be wrong-it was so very long ago. It was the first and only time I saw Eric and the last time I saw Alan-your father. Somewhere I think I have a photo. If I do I will send a copy to you. I think Rose may have corresponded for a bit with Eric's mother but am not sure about that so you might ask her. I thought that Eric's birth date was January 5, 1976.

Eric lived with my dad and I for a summer when I was about 8 I think. He was born about 1977 in January and his mother's last name was ODonnell I believe. I paid for a name search and got an address in Oakland but the letter I sent was returned. I asked my father for Erics SS# but he wouldn't help, he isn't concerned with finding family.
