Further research has now uncovered more children of Ann Goldie and Bernard Hughes. These children would have been left behind or deceased by the time of their parents' transportation. The government would not have paid for the voyage of children who were not still dependent on their parents so that is why only the four youngest girls were transported along with their mother and the others remained in Scotland, probably with relatives. There was:
Ann born in 1805
Catherine 1808
Margaret born 1811
John born 1813
PLUS the four little girls transported with their mother.
I suspect the Margaret born in 1811 did not survive childhood as the couple named a later child Margaret also.
These two children may have carried the surname of Hughes (Bernard's surname) or Goldie (Ann's surname).
I also believe at this point in my research that Ann may have had at least a sister named Isobel and a brother named John and a James born in the late 1700's.
Does this help anyone?
Norman Goldie of New Jersey

Trying to find any info on Norman GOLDIE's family. Norman born 1901 in N.J., death date and location unk. He married my cousin, Catherine Marie Kreps in Phila in 1924, and they had 3 children, Harold, b 1925, no further data on him, Anna, b 1926, married Joseph Cipolla and lived in Bellmawr, NJ, died 1999, and William b 1929, died 1999 in Bellmawr. Norman's parents are recorded as Harold Goldie, born Austria dc'd by 1924 and Dora Green, also from Austria, also dc'd by 1924. I can find no trace of any of these names except in 1930 when Catherine and her children are living at home with her father, James Kreps. I expect that Harold and Dora's name were probably Anglicized. If anyone recognizes these names, I'd love to hear from you.

Re: Goldies in Kilmarnock or Riccarton, Scotland in 1800's

I have Goldie Ancestors living in that area in the late 1700's and early 1800's,

My 4x great grandmother was one Ann Goldie who is documented as having lived in "Renfrew" between 1780 and 1827 but I believe she may have been born in Camlarchie. Ann was born in or around 1781. She claims to have been the wife of Bernard Hughes (an Irish weaver and tallow chandler from Armagh, Ireland) who was about 5 years or so older than she. Ann had six children of whom I have positive proof but am unable to recover any birth records for.
John born abt 1813
Mary Ann born abt 1816
Isabella born abt 1820
Margaret born abt 1823
Elizabeth abt 1824

There is another child (I suspect a boy) who may have been born before all these children - his name may be Michael. He is the only one for whom I do not have any documentation.

Ann was convicted of on-selling stolen goods and was transported to Australia in the late 1820's and she opted to take her four daughters with her. One son John stayed back in Scotland psossibly with relatives but he later migrated to Australia with his wife Ann Hyndes in 1838. I have no clue as to what happened to the other child of the family or whether he/she stayed back in Scotland or even survived at all. Ann's husband was also transported for the same crime as she had been, and he arrived in Australia a year later. The 4 daughters were taken from Ann upon arrival in Australia and put into the Government orphanage. They were reunited with their parents a few years later.

I would very much like more information on this little family and especially the movements of John and his sibling
who remained in Scotland after the transportation of their family. Ann's youngest daughter, Elizabeth was the 2x great grandmother of the film star Errol Flynn (despite claims by others, who have just copied incorrect information from each other, that Flynn's ancestry was otherwise). I have the absolute and irrefutable documented evidence of Flynn's ancestry.

It is possible that there are remaining descendants of this Goldie family still in Scotland. I do not believe that Ann was an only child and remain committed to finding the extended family. Ann was listed as being a servant but was able to do other tasks. Her mother MAY have been one Ann Muir of Glasgow or surrounds but this is not confirmed either as yet.

Does any of this information lead to anyone else's ancestry back in Scotland? Bernard and Ann appeared to have travelled frequently between Glasgow and Armagh in Ireland where Bernard was born and probably took the children with them when they did. There is no record of Bernard's birth in Armagh either. Ann and Bernard may have been married by mutual consent as there is no official record of their marriage that I have yet been able to find. Ann is listed on all documents as "Ann Goldie, wife of Bernard Hughes".

If anyone would like further information on this family or has any Goldie's that they feel might be related, please contact me. All the children bore the surname "Hughes" but Ann retained her surname of "Goldie".

Kerri

Looking for any info on the above. I believe they were my GGG grandparents. I also believe they were born in Kilmarnock around 1815 to 1820 as they were married I Kilmarnock in 1837. Alexander was a miner and eventually moved to the Kilwinning area of Ayrshire where I believe their daughter Janet was born. She had an illigitimate son Hugh my G grandfather who was born in Dalry Ayrshire in 1872-4. He eventually moved back to the Hurlford area where he lived with relatives as his "parents" immigrated to the states. As a result all his official docs except for his birt cert show that his parents were a Hugh and Annie Goldie.

My G grandfather was a Pro Footballer with Celtic in the early days of the Club when he retiredhe was a Bonded oes this ring a bell with anybody.

My direct e mail address is jhste@talktalk.net

Cheers

John Stewart

Hi Kerri,

I came across some of your internet posts regarding this couple. If you are interested in other lines of this family I have written a family history which is available from my site at www.hotkey.net.au/~dfasano/index.htm
Bernard and Ann's daughter Elizabeth married secondly to William Thomson, whose daughter Jessie married John Flynn. Jessie and John's son Theodore was the father of actor Errol Flynn. I do intend doing a revised version in a couple of years as I would like to add more details on connected families such as yours. I am happy to answer any questions you might have, and I do have a copy of the trial precognition if you would like it as I have no more use for it now. You can contact me on youngblood1909(at)gmail.com (Replace the (at) with @)

Regards
Debra
Hello Mike,

Thank you for the information but the Ann GOLDIE I am seeking was living in Glasgow in or around 1827 and definitely NOT 1728. I would like to think she was descended from such a fine family as yours sounds but I fear she is not. She was living in abject poverty in 1827 and was caught up in crime as a result. I am of the opinion that she may have been the daughter of one Ann MUIR and John GOLDIE but am yet to confirm this information. I think "GOLDIES" were thick on the ground around then in Glasgow so I think, given my Ann's ultimate fate, it is unlikely that she was related to your ancestors. Thank you anyway for the reply.

Kerri

Ann Goldie of Ayrshire married Adam Lees 1728 and had daughters & at least one son John Lees born 1738, who was a medic in Battle of Warburg in the 7 Years war in Germany, and from his contacts there with the director of medical hospitals Robert Cathcart married his eldest daughter Mary Cathcart and had 6+ children from 1776 on. John Lees' diary (Trinity College document 9875) is in my possession and in it he describes Ann Goldie Lees passing in September 1785 in Ayr. Sir John & Lady Mary's youngest son Thomas Hastings Orde Lees daughter Charlotte married Rev Dr. Geo.
Ann GOLDIE of Renfrewshire circa 1781

I am searching for any descendants or information about Ann GOLDIE who definitely lived in Renfrewshire (near Glasgow) in and around 1827. She had four girls (Mary Ann, Isabella, Margaret and Elizabeth) and PERHAPS a boy (Henry?). I am not sure about the boy but the girls are definite. She was living with a man named Bernard Hughes and claimed to be his wife but there is no official record I can find of a marriage and she uses both her names from time to time so it may have not been a "legal" marriage. Does this girl familiar to anyone? She was born around 1781 and Bernard around 1775. He claimed to have come from Armagh.

Kerri

Hello Bill, it sure has been a long time since we have written each other... I was coresponding with a young Goldie who was on a submarine or ship...and he mentioned you and he was going to visit Pennsylvania last year of a year or two before that...
Jacks cousins came from scotland for a visit , Joe and Betty Reynolds came after her brother Joe Reynolds told them what a fine time he had..ha.
anyway we are off to scotland in a week or so.. for three weeks...
my new email is brodiehighlands@yahoo.com, or highlandcoos@verizon.net
if you care to correspond... best regards, Barbara Wright Brodie..... ps. I went as far as I could with the family history and got a photo from the young man on the ship... and I used that to prove to my father in law, that I had the right family, he kept saying it was wrong, until he saw his grandfather and his mother both in a big picture that had Farigal and his wife in it ... It was the first time he had ever seen his Great Grandfather, he was STUNNED.... but pleasantly so... he does not argue with me much any more.. he knows I am the real deal he use to think I was making this stuff up...ha.. best to you ... barbara Wright Brodie

HI everybody. My problems continue with this situation. As I stated a while ago my GG grandfather was Hugh Goldie bn abt 1872 in Kilmarnock and his parents were listed as Hugh and Annie Goldie(nee Goldie) Despite all my efforts I have been unable to trace any info of a marriage with this pair.

According to my mother, who is the daughter of Margaret Goldie who was the daughter of Hugh(my gg grandfather and Grace McGinn) and also several other family members my gg grandfathers parents left him shortly after he was born and he was brought up by relatives John and Agnes Goldie(nee McGinn) This puts his DoB in 1872 Approx.

His parents went to the states. THIS IS A FACT AS THERE ARE STILL RELATIVES ALIVE WHO MET THEM and have also lived in the States near to where they resided.....I believe it was OHIO.

Hugh however was a Pro Footballer and my enquiries in this direction with CELTIC F.C. shows that when he played for them he gave his D.o.B. as 10 Feb 1874 in Dalry, Ayrshire.

Further enq. show that his mother was a Janet Goldie.....father not known.

In 1881 I have found what appears to be them in the Census of that tme still in Dalry with his mother being a mill worker. She was aged approx 25 yrs.

From this point onward I am completely stuck. I can find no positive ID for Janets parents......No trace of a wedding or of a death.Nor can I find her in any immigration records.

HELP!!!!!!

I have recently discovered a line of Goldies who appear to have originated in Riccarton.

Jean Goldie married Robert Kennedy in Glasgow in 1929 [OPR] They had at least 2 children Thomas Goldie Kennedy born Glasgow 1831 and George Goldie Kennedy born about 1832. She died before 1841 as by then Robert was remarried to Easter [or Esther] Stevenson.
Jean's brother Robert and sister Margaret lived longer and so from death certificates I have found that their parents were George Goldie, Powerloom Tenter and Jane Pollock.
Robert was born in Riccarton and Margaret in Deanston by Doune.
From the IGI George Goldie & Jane Pollock married: 22 APR 1803, Riccarton, Ayr and had children:
1. Jean Goldie, Born probably ABT 1805 Riccarton? married Robert Kenendy in 1829, Died between 1832 and 1841
2. Robert Goldie, Clerk & Cashier Born ABT 1807 Riccarton, married Marjorie Bruce (died bef 1851), 1 child Mary Ann born 1837 (died bef 1841) Died 1889 Glasgow
3. Margaret Goldie, Powerloom Worker Born 23 DEC 1809 Doune, never married, Died 1904 Deanston
4. Agnes Goldie, Born 9 MAY 1813 Kilmadock
5. George Goldie, Born 22 MAR 1815 Kilmadock, probably died before 1821
6. Janet Goldie, Born 16 SEP 1817 Kilmadock
7. May Goldie, Born 4 MAR 1820 Kilmadock
8. George Goldie, Born 10 DEC 1821 Kilmadock married Ann Fulton not found 1851 possibly emigrated?

Jane Pollock had her father Alan Pollock, Wool Weaver living with her in Doune in 1841. Neither found 1851, presumed died before 1851. Presume George Goldie senior died before 1841.

Can anyone help me link this family with any of the Kilmarnock/Riccarton Goldie or Pollock families?

with thanks
Phyllis

I will do that, thank you. I'm just waiting for clarification of some of the info from my mother who still holds the actual birth certificate and she is going to send me a copy which I will scan and send off. Supposedly it's plenty clear enough to be able to read (it was actually issued to my grandmother in the 1970's).

Thanks again so much, to everyone, for the clarification and insight. It is very much appreciated.

Thank you so much, both for the information and the ScotlandsPeople website. I didn't know that site existed and I'm really just starting my search.

It may be possible that this Eva Goldie McKnight married and became the Eva Robinson that my grandmother knew as her mother. I'll dig through both sites to see if I can find a link between this Eva Goldie McKnight and the Agnes Goldie McKnight listed on my grandmothers birth certificate. They may have been sisters or otherwise related.

Unfortunitely my grandmother didn't find out any of this until well after her family had passed and until she was well up in years. The few things I'm working on are based upon her birth certificate which we have and memories my mother and I have of conversations with my grandmother.

Thanks again. I really do appreciate it. And now...back to my digging.

I don't have anyone of that name - but looking at Scotlandspeople there is only one Mcknight birth with a forename Goldie around that time - Eva Goldie McKnight born 1887 in Lanark. She also appears in the 1891 Census returns.
Given that your Grandmother was called Eve - I wonder if this is your great-grandmother?
Maybe she was known by the name of Agnes even though her birth name was Eva? No sign of her marraige or her death - so maybe mother emigrated?
Alan

I'm wondering if anyone in this thread has happened upon an Agnes Goldie McKnight, circa @ 1890 give or take a bit, in their research. I'm not sure if this is her maiden or married name although I'm inclined to believe it was her maiden name. I have her down as the mother of my maternal grandmother (as listed on a birth certificate), Agnes Eva Robinson who was born in 1908. She was raised in the Kilmarnock and Clydebank areas however she may have been born in a different area.

We didn't learn this till my grandmother was quite old and she needed to request her birth certificate to get a passport to travel. As one could imagine it was a shock at that age to learn that she was adopted. Anyway, no father was listed on the birth certificate which leads us to believe that perhaps her birth mother was unmarried and that is why she was raised by someone else.

I have a possible connection that perhaps someone can clarify upon.

My grandmother, Agnes Eva Robinson, was raised by an Eva and Edward Robinson in the Kilmarnock/Clydebank area. She was born in 1908 and her parents died by the time she was in her late teens at which time she moved to Canada.

When she was in her late 60's she sent for her birth certificate and was surprized to find that both of her parents, or the people she knew as parents, were not listed on her birth certificate.

Instead, the birth certificate listed her name as Agnes Eva Robinson (which is who she grew up as) however there was no father listed on the birth certificate and her mother was listed as an Agnes Goldie McKnight.

This has lead me to believe that perhaps Agnes Goldie McKnight was her birth mother and that she was raised by Eva Robinson as perhaps Agnes Goldie McKnight was a young and unwed mother. I've also been left wondering if perhaps Eva Robinson and Agnes Goldie McKnight were somehow related or at least were good friends as my grandmother appears to have been named after them both.

With Goldie being such an unusual name to have as a middle name I'm wondering if perhaps it was used due to a family connection. Perhaps "Goldie" was a family name on her mothers side and this Agnes Goldie McKnight was named that way in tribute to her mothers side of the family.

Does anyone in this thread have anyone by the name of Agnes Goldie McKnight, possibly born around 1890 or so, in their known family trees?

Hello Alan

I was interested to see your correspondence with mrbollinger recently. You may remember providing me with a great deal of information a few years ago and I was able to give you my connection as a descendant of Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle.

Since then I’ve continued to research Hugh and Jean’s descendants and can add a little to what you have already found.

I have the same findings about their children, with one addition i.e. no 7.

1.	Hugh Goldie baptised on 1/8/1798 in St Quivox
2.	Unaccounted for
3.	William Goldie b. 24/8/1804	d. 13/1/1866 (my GG Grandfather)
4.	James Goldie b. 22/2/1807	d. 14/6/1865
5.	Agnes Goldie b. abt 1809	d.27/9/1892
6.	John Goldie	b. abt 1813	d. 25/10 1874
7.	Hugh Goldie b. abt 1817	d. 24/6/1880

From this, it would seem that the first Hugh Goldie (baptised on 1/8/1798) must have died before 1817. The death certificate of Hugh Goldie, who died on 24/6/1880 in Holytown, Lanarkshire, shows him to be the son of Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle. He was 63 years old and married to Agnes Dick.

Hope you find this useful.

Joyce
Hello,
I have the same information as you - except a 5th child - John Goldie b abt 1814 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. Here is the information from the 1851 and 1861 census returns for John. He dies 1874 in Uddingston, Lanarkshire.

1851 - age 37 Glasgow, St Johns, 564/30/25
1861 - age 47	29 Eastern Road, Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland - moulder

To answer your specific question - no I have no information that they ever returned to Ayrshire. By middel 19th C the coal in Ayrshire was almost exhausted and the coalfields of Lanarkshire were being developed so both coal and iron works were springing up all over Lanarkshire. Through the generations the Goldies were associated either with coal or with Iron/steel
You Hugh is the 4x great grandfather of my wife and my wife's grandfather was killed at a steelworks in Lanarkshire in the 1930s and her father started life in the steelworks.
I have no information about son Hugh who married Margaret Baird in 1814 - so if you can fill in the blank on my tree, that would be great. My email address is a.w.davidson@open.ac.uk
Please ask if you want more information.
Alan
Hi Alan,
Please forgive me if we have communicated before, but I think the Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle has been suggested as the oldest part of my Goldie family tree. My oldest confirmed relative is Hugh Goldie and Margaret Baird married in 1818 in Kilmarnock. Hugh is deceased by the 1841 census, but there is a Hugh Golde born to Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle of St Quivox in 1798. I had a researcher try confirm this as my Hugh Goldie and this is the information he gave me:

QUOTED FROM RESEARCHER
"You say that this Hugh was born c1798 (source of this information?).

Hugh Goldie was baptised on 1/8/1798 in St.Quivox parish, Ayrshire; son of Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle.
This Hugh looks promising but one cannot be sure that the "right" Hugh was ever recorded in an OPR.
In the St.Quivox parish register (OPR 612.1/1) I found 2 relevant entries:-
On 9/9/1797 there was a marriage recorded between Hugh Goudie and Jean Kyle, and then,
in 1798:-
"Goldie. Hugh lawful Son to Hugh Goldie and Jean Kyle born & baptized 1st August 1798."
(c) I found no more relevant entries in that register but the indexes revealed more details of
that family, which in fact left Ayrshire.
Another son, William, was baptised on 2/9/1804 in Barony parish (which rings the east and
north of Glasgow city) - he was noted as the 3rd child in the family. William was followed
by James (child 4), who was baptised on 22/2/1807, also in Barony parish. And then, on
15/10/1809, a daughter, Agnes, was baptised - in Cambusnethan parish (North Lanarkshire).
Did the family ever return to Ayrshire, I wonder?
END OF QUOTATION

You may already have this information, but I noticed that you didn't mention a Hugh Goldie in your list of children. Can you give me some feedback of any further information you know about this family?

Hi Carole. I have recently begun researching my family tree & just found this forum. I'm a Goldie from Trinidad, now in the UK. Also, we have Galts on my father's mother's side as well, and I noticed you posting a lot on the Galt forum too. Perhaps we can help each other out & compare notes. Do email me if you get a moment... mark AT markgoldie.co.uk Cheers! Mark Goldie.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't James Goldie, born 22 August 1845 in Hobart, also have a brother in New Zealand named David Goldie (m. Partington)?

Hi folks,
I am researching my family tree in Glasgow and north Lanarkshire in the early 1800s. Hugh Goldie had three (perhaps four) children - William, James and Agnes as below. Actually I think ther is a fourth - John b. about 1811.
Does any of this ring bells?
Alan

Hugh Goldie - Jean Kyle

William Goldie c. 2 sep 1804 Barony, Lanark
m.
Hello Alan,

Have you created a family tree at all? My family has done so, and have been creating it very extensively within the past 2 years. All of our files were originially physical, but we have been digitizing all of them.

We also have found James and Agnes, as well as William. There have been many Johns in our family tree. Please let me know more details. Im very interested.

Kyle
