Looking for a connection to my great grandmother, Ettie Goldscmid. Approximately 1910 she started being referred to as a Goldsmith.
It is believed she may have come from Latvia as my great grandfather was from Riga.
She is known to have lived in Bethnal Green England most or all of her adult life, and all her children were born there also.

Looking for Goldsmith family originally from Scotland - John, Fred, Ivy, Ena

I am looking for my great grandfather F.C. Goldsmith. He had 4 children, John Herbert, Fred, Ena and Ivy. He was from Scotland, probably Tongue or Mill Port, Bute. He fought and died in the First World War. His wife remarried a gentelman with the last name of Stuart. The children eventually moved to Canada and assumed Stuart as their surnames although I don't think they were ever legally adopted by their step-father. John Herbert (Goldsmith) Stuart and Fred Stuart both fought in World War 2 in the Royal Canadian Military. John was a Sergeant Major. He married Audris Annette Bulmer before the war and lived in Toronto. They had 3 children together. He died in the 1970's and is buried in Toronto. Any info would be appreciated.

Oliver Goldsmith (1785-1845) - Cutchogue, Long Island, NY

Oliver Goldsmith (1785-1845) - Cutchogue, Long Island, NY

I offer the following data for Long Island Goldsmith researchers. Looking for additional info about the family of, and parents of, Oliver Goldsmith of Cutchogue, Long Island (1785-1845). Here is what I have:

CUTCHOGUE CHURCH RECORDS

Source: Wayland Jefferson, Cutchogue - Southold's First Colony - (New York, 1940)

Marriage:

Pg 156 - 04/12/1812 - Oliver Goldsmith & Charlotte Terry

Baptisms

Pg 162 - 07/09/1815 - Oliver Brewster, son of Charlotte, wife of Oliver Goldsmith
Pg 163 - 08/14/1818 - Orin, son of Oliver & Charlotte Goldsmith
Pg 164 - 02/12/1820 - David, son of Oliver & Charlotte Goldsmith
__________________

HEADSTONES AT CUTCHOGUE CEMETERY

Source: Suffolk County, NY Historical Society Register, Vol XXVII, No 3, p 95, Cemetery No 9, Cutchogue.

Oliver, died 03/01/1845, age 57
Charlotte, wife of Oliver, died 06/22/1828, age 34
Eunice, wife of Oliver, died 10/03/1849, age 55

_________________

INTESTATE PROBATE ABSTRACT

Source: Elizabeth R Van Buren, Suffolk Co Abstracts of Intestate Records, Libers A thru G, Riverhead, NY (Higginson), Pg 108, Liber G:11. Oliver Goldsmith.

Oliver Goldsmith, of Southold. 11 Mch 1845.
Adm: son Orrin T Goldsmith
Widow: Eunice declines
Witness: S Lewis Sibley
Bond: Ira B and Isaac T Tuthill
2nd Bond: 26 Dec 1846, Oliver Corey, Ira B Tuthill
Heirs: said Orrin and Oliver B of age; Charlotte M, George L, Julia H, and Caroline (L?); minors; Oliver Corey, guardian.
File 3501, p 104

Note: Ira B and Isaac T Tuthill are almost certainly brothers of first wife Charlotte and uncles of the older boys. Oliver Corey may give a clue as to the origins of his name as Oliver.
__________________

CENSUS RECORDS for Oliver - All in Southold, Suffolk, NY

1820 M26-44=1, M<10=2, Fover45=1, F16-25=1 = Ttl 5
1830 M40-49=1, M10-14=1, F>50=1, F3-39=1, F<5=1 = Ttl 5
1840 M50-59=1, M15-19=1, M5-9= 1, F60-69=1, F40-49=1, F10-14=1, F<5=2, Ttl = 6
________________

WHICH WIFE MOM?

He married and had at least three children by Charlotte Tuthill (Cutchogue church records). She died 06/22/1828.

In 1845, his widow Eunice declined being administrator of his estate.

If the first named minor in the probate abstract, Charlotte M, is the oldest, and she shows age 20 in the 1850 census in Oliver Brewser's household, ie born 1830, and since Charlotte died 1828; then second-wife Eunice would be the mother of all the minor children.

RECORDS AFTER OLIVER'S DEATH IN 1845

Oldest son Oliver Brewster (as O B) is in 1850 census, then disappears from view, but is buried in Cutchgue. Per pg 80 of the Jeremiah Vail genealogy, he married Julia Case, daughter of Gilbert and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Vail) Case. His wife Julia, and Betsy Case both appear in the 1850 census with a daughter named Charlotte T Goldsmith, age 13. His sisters Charlotte M and Julia H, listed in the 1845 probate abstract as minors are in his household.

Eunice is likely the Eunice Goldsmith, widow, who is reported to have died Oct 1850, age 55, of dysentery, in U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885 (Provo, UT, USA, Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2010), Database online. Since the as of date of the 1850 census was June 1, I would expect to find her in the 1850 census, but have been unsuccessful.

Orrin and several of his offspring are accounted for in subsequent census records in Cutchogue. His headstone photo is shown in find-a-grave, here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Go...;

Oliver's headstone is in find-a-grave here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Go...;

____________________

QUESTIONS

Is Eunice in the 1850 census? (She died Oct 1850)
Who is Eunice the daughter of? Is there a marriage record?
Where is son Oliver Brewster in 1860-1880 censuses? He is buried at Cutchogue, died 04/28/1888. See find-a-grave for photo of headstone.
What happened to Oliver's children: David? George? Caroline?
Who is Oliver Corey, the minor's guardian in the probate abstract? Is he a clue to how Oliver Goldsmith got his name?

Goldsmith/Test

Clayton Test, b. 1807 in Salem, NJ, married a Goldsmith. They had a son, John b. abt. 1839 and a daughter Caroline b. 1834. Both children were born in Philadelphia, PA. Does anyone have a first name for the Goldsmith, when and where they were married and when and where she died. She had to have died between 1839 and 1848 in Philadelphia as Clayton married again in 1848. Any info would sure be appreciated as this is one of my mysteries. Thank you.]
Ojibway2

My grandmother, Kathleen Goldsmith (currently 97) was from Cork City and I believe the post from AMLHarris is therefore a relation of mine (my nan's family as far as I know were Nanny, Eileen, Danny,Michael, Lucy, Nora, Theresa, Bernadette, Charlie, Paddy (might not be the right order). I have information about the Goldsmith's including a link to St Helena (off coast of South Africa). Nanny's mother and father were Michael and Margaret Goldsmith. Michael's mother was Margaret Goldsmith and she was born in Saint Helena South Africa (see 1911 census). I am more than happy to hear from anyone who has more info and I will share what I have.

Sara

Sara

Yes, I remember grandma's biscuits, they were awesome!! I will attempt to replicate the recipe until I get it down. I would also love the family recipe for stewed tomatoes, (nobody can duplicate those either!) My name is Pam, I thank you kindly for your phone number and e-mail. "Lee" was my dad, Uncle Buck was his brother (Ronald). My family was quite a bit older when I was born and I find myself wanting to know as much as possible about them so I can pass this knowledge to my children. My e-mail is pelefritz@yahoo.com, I will definitely be in touch! Have a wonderful day.

Pam

Richard & Mariah (Elmira) would have been my great grandparents. I am the granddaughter of Ben & Ethel Goldsmith, daughter of Frank. I have not been able to find information past Richard & Mariah, but I definitely believe we are related (somehow). I believe that my grandpa and your dad were brothers. I had an Aunt Mary that moved near Clarksburg after she married, lived there until she passed in 2007. She was married to Ralph and they had no children. Aunt Masil lived in the house behind her. Please send any info.

My grandfather and his sister lived in the Protestant Orphan Asylum, New Haven, CT from 1912 until about 1920. I have been unable to obtain records about their early life because the Asylum is now a Children's Mental Health Inpatient Center located in Hamden, CT and all records are sealed. In do know that pictures were taken - they attended school and Church, they were well cared for. But any information about their early life would be greatly appreciated.

Issues with Joseph Hull Goldsmith's Manuscript
Joseph Hull Goldsmith says his line of descent is:

Joseph Hull-6, Zachius-5, David-4, Zachius-3, John-2, Ralph-1 Goldsmith.

John-2 md Deborah Cary, 04/04/1732

Some Goldsmith researchers now believe that his recollections (perhaps oral tradition) beyond his great-great-grandfather are faulty, and that he is actually:

Joseph Hull-7, Zaccheus-6, David-5, Zaccheus-4, John-3,2, Richard-1 Goldsmith.

Two specific differences:

1) He merged two Johns into one.
2) The paternal immigrant is more likely Richard Goldsmith of Wenham, Mass - who is the likely father of the likely two brothers who are the progenitors of the Southold Goldsmiths: John and Thomas Goldsmith

The wives being
Joseph Hull-7 md Abigail Wells
Zaccheus--6 md Mary Vail
David-5 Goldsmith md Elizabeth Hull
Zacchus-4 md Deborah Cory/Corey
John-3 md Mary Vail
John-2 md Prudence Wines (1st of 3 wives)
Richard-1 Goldsmith, of Wenham, Mass, md [Elizabeth Perkins?]
_________________________

WILL OF BARNABAS WYNDES
Named daughter Prudence wife of John Goldsmith when it was proved 03/04/1679/80.

His will, Southold, Suffolk Co., NY, written 23 Nov 1675, was presented at the Court of Sessions in Southold, the first, second and third days of June, 1680. At the session, it was noted that Prudence Windes was now wife of John Goldsmith. The will was proved by testimony of Jacob and Abraham Corey, at the Court of Sessions, Southampton, 4 Mar 1679/80. Inventory of his estate was made 10 Dec. 1679, by Samuel Glover, Abraham Corey, John Corwin. The John Goldsmith who was the father of Zaccheus, would almost certainly be the John Goldsmith who married Mary Vail and and the son of the John Goldsmith who married Prudence Wines as the first of three wives.

The main question is who is the father of John and Thomas Goldsmith of Southold? Three candidates are:

1) Richard Goldsmith of Wenham
2) Joseph Goldsmith of Killingworth, CT
3) Ralph Goldsmith (either of Kings Co, or the Capt of the ship bringing Quakers to America, or both.

Comments welcome.

See my web page at:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Notice links at top for views of Pedigree, Register report, descendant listing, etc.
1875 Manuscript of Joseph Hull Goldsmith b 1799 in Southold, NY

As the years go by, I am trying to sprinkle the bits and pieces of materials I have gathered over the years to places where it can do good.

This is a manuscript written by Joseph Hull Goldsmith on 03/18/1875. I received a typed copy of this sometime in the 1990s from another researcher. This manuscript has a note that it was first transcribed Oct 10, 1913. I'm guessing that means that was the first time it was transferred to type-written format from the hand-written original. I don't know where the original could be now. I probably got my copy from another researcher by email, whose identity has been lost due to computer crashes over the years wiping out old Outlook messages (which is why I now use Gmail.com.).

I hope this benefits someone.
________________________

(October 10, 1913)
(Copy of Original held by Addison Moore Goldsmith, son of Joseph Addison Goldsmith)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I insert the following for the amusement, information and benefit of my children, grand-children and their successors. My Great, Great, Great Grandfather was Ralph Goldsmith, who came to this town from London, England, about the year 1660, or about 20 years after the first settlement of this town in 1640 - he came here in a sailing vessel, and having some means, was immediately declared a citizen - his is the first name of Goldsmith on the Records of the Town.

John Goldsmith, the son of Ralph, was my Great, Great Grandfather. Zachius Goldsmith, the son of the preceding, John Goldsmith was my Great Grandfather. He was born in 1710 or 11 and married Deborah Cary, April 4th, 1732, and died January 15th, 1795, aged about 84 years. David Goldsmith, the son of the preceding Zachius, was my Grandfather. He was born in 1735 or 36 - he married Betsey Hull November 27th, 1755 - they had children, name Joseph Hull (from whom I took my name) who died, or lay dead, with Lock Jaw, at the time of my birth - David, Daniel, Zachius, Jeremiah, Martin, Salem, Mary, Prudence, Deborah and Betsey. he was drowned in the Sound, off Ashamomach Beach, October 11th, 1800, aged 64.

My father, Zachius, lived to be the oldest of all the sons, and he lacked about a month of 69 when he died. The girls all lived to be over 80 years of age. My grandfather, David, was crazy the latter part of his life, and my Mother used to say that he was a very strong minded and thoughtful person; that he was so far ahead of the masses of the people at that time, and not having genial society, especially in religious matters, that he gradually became insane. He is said to have been the first outspoken Universalist in Southold.

Zachius Goldsmith, the son of the preceding David, was my Father. He was born in Southold, May 8th, 1766. He married Mary Vail (my Mother) daughter of Elisha and Rhoda Vail, and Grand-daughter of John Vail, Nov 15, 1798 - they had 2 sons, no daughters; viz: myself, Joseph Hull and Addison. My profession was that of a Lawyer, which profession I practiced over 40 years. Addison's profession was that of a physician which he practiced for several years, but he became an Engineer, and was engaged as such, in the survey of a Railroad, in the state of Indiana, and died suddenly at LaPorte in said state, August 5th, 1838, aged a little over 35 years. He married Catherine E Beattie, of Staten Island, who still survives him, and is now the wife of Michael Hayne of Chicago, Illinois. Addison left no children - he was born May 20th, 1803.

I, Joseph H, was born September 19th, 1799. My father was a great traveler in his early days - t travel from here to the state of Ohio in those days, was much more of an exploit than to go to and return from Europe now. He was at Cincinnati before I was born, and when nothing but a Garrison was kept there. He was offered all the town part (now) of Cincinnati for $1500 - he said he had the means to buy it, but though he thought then it would ultimately become a city, yet, being young, he dare not buy it. A poor mechanic bought it and very soon sold a small part of it for $40,000 - he always regretted that he did not buy it. He traveled several time to the states of Ohio and Kentucky, during his life - he was a great reader. He loved History and Geography, and it was hard to ask him a question in either that he could not readily answer. My mother, Mary, died September 14th, 1849, and my Father died April 8th, 1835, aged 69 years, less about a month - Mother died aged 73. I, Joseph H. Goldsmith, surviving son of the preceding Zachius Goldsmith, belong to, or am, of the 6th generation of our Goldsmith family since the settlement of this Town. I can only trace my ancestry back to London. I married Maria Case, daughter of Matthius and Julianna Case, October 24th, 1821 - she was born October 5th, 1800. Her mother, Julianna Case, was a daughter of Dr. Micah Moore and his wife, Abigaial, who, by a former husband, named Ledyard, she had several sons, and among whom was John Ledyard, the celebrated Traveler - her Father, Matthius Case, was born in 1766 and died in 1831 - her Mother, Julianna Case, died September 3rd, 1855, aged 87 years.

The children of Joseph H. (Myself) and Maria, my wife, are as follows: - Maria, born July 3rd, 1823 and died the same day; Joseph Addison, Sarah Ann and Helena Maria. Joseph Addison was born in Southold July 26th, 1824 - he married Caroline Adelia Moore Nov 18th, 1845 - their children are as follows: Abram Addison, born December 15th, 1846, died December 17th, 1846Josephine Adelia born February 18th, 1848; Addison Moore, born March 24th 1850; Carrie Virginia, born December 19th, 1855; Clarence Arthur, born February 7th, 1859; Prescott Forest, born September 13th, 1864 and died October 13th, 1864; Leroy Robinson, born February 9th, 1867 and died October 1st, 1872.

Sarah Ann was born in New York, August 23rd, 1829. She was first married to Abraham Edwards of Brooklyn, December 21st, 1846 - he died at Southold May 5th, 1853 - they had one son named Oliver Hull Goldsmith Edwards, who was born in Brooklyn, April 19th, 1849. She remained a widow till May 12th, 1857, when she married Willshire Scott Courtney of Brooklyn, then late of Pittsburgh, PA, who was born March 1st, 1819 and died at Pittsburgh the 19th day of September 1864. By this marriage they had one son, named Eugene, born April7th, 1859 and died at Newtown, L. I. February 2nd, 1866. She remained a widow the 2nd time till December 11th, 1867, when she married William E Bragow of Woodside, who was born December 1830. Her present husband, by which marriage they had one child, a daughter, named Helena Goldsmith, who was born January 4th, 1869.

Helena Maria, my youngest daughter, was born in Southold March 17th, 1837, and died March 24th, 1859, aged 22 years and 7 days. She died at my house. She married J. Albert Wells, on the 14th day of October, 1857 - by this marriage they had one son, named Willie Hull Wells, who was born on the 18th day of March, 1859, she surviving his birth but 6 days. He now resides in Brooklyn with his Father.

My Grand-daughter, Josephine Adelia, the daughter of my son, J. Addison Goldsmith, was married to Albert L. Conklin of Brooklyn, May 16th, 1870, and the result of this marriage to date, is a son, named after his Father, who was born. This is my only Great Grand-child.

Written by me, March 18, 1875, at the age of 75 years, and over, at Southold, L.I.

Joseph H. Goldsmith,
my business signature being thus:
J. H. Goldsmith
The only things I have to place them are his name on the gigantic family monument in Willow Hill Cemetery, and as an apparent child in the 1850 census, in the family of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Terry) Goldsmith. There is a bunch of that family buried at Willow Hill. The photo at FAG is barely readable, but try it here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=69...

If you locate the Deborah Tuthill who married the 1754 Benjamin Goldsmith, I'd appreciate a note.

Click on the photo to make it bigger. Try some of the other family members to see if you can get a better view. The FAG contributor setup a Memorial for him here with no dates, but that could indicate to me that he was memorialized here and buried somewhere else.

At any rate, you can click on links for the parents Benjamin and Elizabeth (Terry) Goldsmith to see links to other children. Their marriage was recorded 12/08/1808 in the Salmon Records.

Also note he is listed single in the household with Benajamin and Elizabeth in the 1850 census. You can try familysearch.org, or if an ancestry subscriber, try here:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

As for their ancestry, I haven't added Austin to my on-line tree yet, but you can find the ancestry I have for Benjamin and Elizabeth at WorldConnect, here:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Note the links at the top by which you can select pedigree view, ahnentafel, descending register report, descendant listing, etc.

He was a farmer.

He was born about 1812 and died in March 1880. He married Esther Talmadge Stratton on March 11, 1841.

They had (this from census information):

George born about 1845
Caroline M. about 1849
Benjamin S. about 1852
Sidney A. about 1855
Harrison about 1857
Mary E. about 1859
and my great grandmother... Imogene L.
born May 3, 1861 - died August 23, 1894

Imogene L. Goldsmith married
William Augustine Fleet (1855 - 1944) of Cutchogue who was the eldest son of Henry Landon Fleet (1832 - 1894).

I have information about the Fleets going back to the 1600s, but am just starting to research the Goldsmith side of my family.

So far, I have found nothing indicating who Austin B. Goldsmith's parents were...

Thanks for any help you can give me....

That was not in the Register. I wouldn't mind tieing her into her family.
Interesting subject that. Mac Titmus already did it. He created a set of CD's and offered them to the SCHS so they could sell them. Mac thought it would help the historical society to generate some venue. No deal thou.

Seems to be some sort of permission problem.

You should talk to Mac and Ned Smith about this.

Love your work on genealogy.

Carolee Nichols Diamond

I was wondering if those old copies of the Register I kept in a card-board box would ever come in handy.

They ought to index them and put them on-line. I guess that would have to be volunteers, though, huh.

Thanks for pointing the way.

Thanks. I was wondering how a census taken in summer of 1850 would know of a death in the fall of 1850. That explains why she isn't in the 1850 census.

Was this a list of transcriptions in Riverhead Cemetery? or a list of transcriptions of all cemeteries in the Town of Riverhead? If the latter, which cemetery?

Thanks again

I look forward to receiving Bill's email address or having him contact me through the one I gave you yesterday.

The person who was instrumental in starting leaflet is Douglas Seaton and he will be delighted that we have made contact. We tried to put birth and death dates on all the plaques and that is why we put in a request to Ancestry.com for information about Maynard Goldsmith.

You can look on the North Berwick web page and see a lot of information about the town and a great deal about the golfers. This is very exciting.

Kind regards

Irene

Hello Annette

Two years ago when I Placed the request a small group of us in North Berwick were setting up a walk celebrating the lives of pioneering golfers who had lived and worked in the town.

We researched all the folk, over 120, and whittled it down to 46 individual plaques and two large ones. Maynard was one were we couldn't find much more. If you get an email I will happily send copies of the research and should be able to add a bit more now they have released the 1911 census

Hello Bruce

You are right it is Maynard Mills Goldsmith. He was born 1908 in Leven, Fife, moved to North Berwick and lived in what was a Temperance Cafe at 88 High Street afterwards he moved to Seabank Hotel, on Marine Parade. He was clubmaker at Ben Sayers, was Scottish champion in 1926, in 1929 appointed Head Professional Lucerne Golf Club in Switzerland, then moved to South Africa to the Royal Cape Club, Capetown until his retirement. If you send an email to viewforth cottage at yahoo . co . uk missing out the spaces I can send you a copy of the plaque which has been placed in the town. Are you a relative of his? I have a copy of his birth certificate.

Irene

Only data that I have found is this. Maynard Landis Jr. 1939-2003. He was the son of Maynard Landis and Minna Beatrice (Roberts)Goldsmith. He 1902-1980, she 1904-1996. They married 1923. He was the son of Grant and Ila Jane (Radabaugh) Goldsmith. He c1863, she c1869. He was the son
of Jacob and Susannah Goldsmith. He c1814, she c1820. He was the son of William and Leah(?). He c1779, she c1780.
It is said that William came to West Virginia from Penn-
sylvania and many of the Goldsmiths in West Virginia were his progeny. This data is what I accumulated and have no documentation for it. I hope it helps you. Bill

This is a longshot, but here it goes. My grandmother refused to say who my father's(Gerald Goldsmith) father was. I think he was born in Brooklyn or Queens NY. Her name was Marie Lazar (spelling?). When my father was around 6, she then married Vincent Lanzetta and changed my father's name from Gerald Goldsmith to Judd Lanzetta. I do not have any info on my father's father or his nationality. If anyone knows anything I would really be grateful.
In 1932 Miss Mary Ellen Barber of Charles Co., MD, (she
was born 1868 in Charles Co., MD), made a letter to Miss
Nettie Blakistone in Wash, DC and mentioned names and dates
in the "Goldsmith Bible". She mentioned Tarlton and Hebb.
The Goldsmiths are St Mary's Co Goldsmith. I look for the parents of John Mason Goldsmith, b abt 1761 SMC, married Priscilla Ann Hebb.

Do you know of a/this Goldsmith bible?
