George O'Neil b1861 Co Durham

I was born in Easington Colliery Co Durham and am interested in tracing my maternal line. my great grandfather was George O'Neil, his daughter Barbara (b.1900)was the only surviving child that he and his wife Elizabeth (nee Durham) had. Dadly their son John George, known as Jack O'Neil emigrated to Perth Western Australia where he was murdered in his late 20s. He had gone to live amongst relatives and Joseph O'Neil (married to Sarah Ann Riley)in my tree was either an uncle or a cousin, I have not yet established which.
If anyone has further information about the O'Neils either in Australia or the Durham area I'd love to hear from you.

Dear David,
Thank you for your messages. I am the adopted daughter of Frank and Wilhelmina Golightly Rand. Kate was my great aunt and I knew both her and Jim. I believe the cousin you mentioned is Gloria. We have been researching the Golightlys and Herberts for several years. I think she told me that you lived in the Kate Herbert house on Fruit St. We lived on Fern. I do have information I can send you. Please send me your e-mail to ERHyatt@aol.com and I will write to you about the family.
Liz Rand Hyatt
Hi:

My maternal great-grandmother was Kate Golightly Herbert. She died when I was just an infant, so I never knew her. I never heard my mother talk much about her, but comments were always complimentary. Kate baby sat for her quite frequently. That's about all. I've got civil records on Elizabeth Golightly. Same mystery about William. I have a cousin who claims to have discovered a William Steel Golightly in England born in 1836, which seems to match. I haven't heard anything since. She was, also, trying to search maritime records hoping to find a ship wreck in the proper time frame. I haven't heard anything on that, either.

Just had to mention it.

Hi: I was searching the internet for the Golightly Family, and came upon your posting.

I was born in Bangor, and my mother's family all came from New Brunswick. Her paternal grandmother was Katie L. Golightly, wife of James T. Herbert. I believe both were from Newcastle, NB. I was just an infant when Kate died in 1944-5. I knew Jim Herbert. He died about 49-50. I've collected civil records on Golightly, and Herbert families, but not much personal records. I believe Wilhimina G., wife of Frank Rand, lived in the same neighborhood as the Herberts which was near Fruit Street in Bangor. This is on the northeast side of Bangor off State street.

If you have any other records, or family stories, it would be very much appreciated.

David Sims

I have been researching the "Golightly" name for about a year now. I have some information that almost coincides with your information. Joseph (b1784; d1859) married Abagail Smith. Their son was Hiram whose is my G-G-G-G grandfather.

I show that Shands William fathered Joseph; Christopher fathered Shands William; William fathered Christopher; and James fathered William. I do not have a date of birth for James but I know he was married to Christine Thompson.

My Grandmother's maiden name was Annie Lou Golightly. She died in 1954. I don't know much about her family. She was born in Hico TX, but met her husband Lloyd Tilley in Illinois. I know there were about 15 children in Annie's family. As I child I remember meeting David Golightly and Hemit Golightly both of California. I don't know the other names. I know my grandmother was somehow part of the same family as Shands Golightly and a family named Harris.
Would anyone have any info that could guide me in the right direction? Since my grandmother died before I was born, I don't even know where to begin.
JABC

Researching the family of Lena Golightly(b. abt 1874) from Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Lena married Aaron Rogers, 1888 in Lee County. They were the parents of two children, Albert(b. 1891) and Leatha (b. abt 1893). The family split and one child went with each parent. I found Albert and his mother in the 1900 census. Albert was listed as Albert Golightly. They were in the household of George Rodgers and Lena was listed as George aunt. I have not been able to find Leatha her father Aaron in any census.

MTDNA Mary Golightly -- Martha A Mathis

Hello, We are looking for a female line sample of MTDNA from John Hembree's wife Martha A. Mathis Hembree. We are wantign to prove whether or not, Mary Golightly Mathis was a Cherokee Indian. My family line is through Lizannah Mathis Ledgerwood and the MTDNA sample origin was Scotland. This is by far... not what we have been told all our lives. So we are needing a direct female line back to Martha. Although the one that gives the sample can be a male, his line back to Martha must be all female. Thanks John Campbell

This is a repost. I made a typo in subject line when first posted.

I found an old photo (tin type) of a young man, woman, and child labeled "T A Golightly). I suspect he is a relative of my GG grandmother Acenith Permeila Golightly. She lived in Tenn. Her father is supposed to have been James Maddison Golilghtly.

I found a Turner A. Golightly in the 1900 census (b. 1865), m. to Martha L. with one child Oma Lee G. age 0. If this is they, I wonder if the photo would have been on paper, rather than tin?

Someone on ancestry.com has a Lumer A. Golightly (could be Turner ?)as 1/2 brother to Acenith Permelia Golightly.

Contact me if you think this is your ancestor and I will scan and send you the photo.

I am searching for anyone who might have a relative whose name in the 1940s was Mary Golightly? She lived at 5 Devon Avenue, Slough. She was a long time pen pal of my aunt, whose name at the time was Loretta Hardy of Mount Vernon, Illinois, USA. My aunt is now 77 years old, and has asked me
repeatedly to see if I can locate Mary and see
what became of her. Please, if you are indeed related
to her or could put me in touch with her and/or her
family, it would be greatly appreciated. My aunt still
has her letters and a photo of her, and I hope to let her know that I fulfilled my promise to find her. Aunt Loretta's health is failing quickly. I'd like to be able to let her know while she might still understand. Thank you, Jane Henderson/Mount Vernon, Illinois, USA

Thomasine Hall married a George Spark. She is sister of Thomas Hall 1838 who married Mary Ann Clark and they had several children incl Margaret Ruth Hall 1870 Gateshead. She married George William England and their elder son is Thomas William England 1891 who married Margaret Golightly b abt 1890. Unfortunately apart from her marraige certificate which states her age at 23 in 1913 and her father as Edward, I have nothing else. So I am drawing a blank on that line and have not gone any further for 3 years now. But hoping to visit Durham in September
Susan

I agree with jltasa. So far I've been unable to find any solid information linking the Golightlys with the Greyhound. Just the same vague stories being recirculated over & over.

I have this reference in my notes which I've never personally seen: 'A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SHIP PASSENGERS LISTS' by Harold Lancour supposedly says "4 Golightlys came over on the ship "Greyhound" landing in Virginia in 1688."

Following is from my visit to London a few years ago:

Greenwich Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London :
found drawing of "H.M.S. Greyhound", launched in 1672, sold in 1698. However this is listed as a Royal naval warship and would therefore not likely to have carried emigrants.

from the Calendar of Treasury Books, 1689-1692 by Shaw, 1931, Public Record Office, London
p.1644, Ship Greyhound built at Shoreham, Sussex by Nicholas Barret
p.1934, Ship Greyhound from Bristol port, 50 tons, "to go to the Plantations", dated 1692 (Barbados, Jamaica & New England)

Re: Greyhound

John Golightly b. 1660 England married Mary Crawford--- their son Hugh Golightly was born 1683 in Virginia --- John is obviously the emigrant but came to the colonies before 1683. Hugh married Jane Lee, a daughter of Hugh Lee, their son Christopher 1711 married Frances Shands and so on. From documents and readings my take is that John Golightly's father is Christopher Golightly also from England. Also I have found reference to John having brothers. However please keep in mind that during this time England & Scotland were under one rule and many of the Scottish lands became England. The Golightly's are absolutely 100% Scottish blood. I have also the unsubstantiated document about the Golightly's arrival in 1683 via Greyhound with William Newcombe --- the encyclopedia verifies a history of a royal British frigate known as HMS Greyhound 5th to have been in commission in 1683 however this ship battled pirates, made no landings in the colony nor had a captain named Newcombe --- The origination and validity of this document has never been proven so I give it no weight.

The Great x8 Granddaughter of John Golightly 1660 : )

Hello,
I have also drawn a blank on the Golightly line:

I have been having difficulty tracing a Golightly ancestor, my great grand mother Margaret Golightly born approx 1890 up norht. Here is her wedding certificate:

Marriage certificate: no 188 in parish church of Venerable Bede, Gateshead district , Durham, on 30th aug 1913 Margaret Golightly Aged 23 a spinster living in 63 Cemetery Road married Thomas William England a bachelor aged 22 a shop assistant living in 59 Cemetery Road. Witnesses are Raymond Frederick Coley and Sarah Isabella Wade. Margaret's father is Edward Golightly a fitter. Thomas's father is George William England a cartman.

She then goes on to have three children Margaret Ruth England 1914, Kathleen 1916 and George about 1921

I cannot find an Edward Golightly with a Margaret as a child... any matches with your tree? There are so few Golightly family members, they must all be related. Also I am told three Golightly brothers went to USA late 1800 so it could be Edward was one of them? Do you know?

Any help would be gratefully received. If you need more details ask , but on that line it stops there unfortunately.
Wilhelmina Golightly married Frank Rand they resided in Bangor Maine. Last summer I took a drive to Bangor to see where they lived. I also found my Grandfather's home. Look forward in hearing from you.
