Dear Mr Prayner,

I have just read your reply to me, I know were the book is that referred to and it was in my sisters house until she died.

My sister was a district nurse and her husband was a master butcher so I dont think there was any connection with
Hall brothers

I know that the oldesst son of the relative of great grandfather Willam was called
Tom and that in 1900 he was living and working in Australia

I have lots of memories of my grand parents and fortunatly all of their children use to get together often and I used to listen to the conversations between them and still can remember very interessting things. I only wish I was younger then I could go to Warwick and find out for myself.

Up until a few moonths ago anything I said about them was dismiss as just talk so I said nothing.

I wish you joy in your search but I think you will keep your copy of the book until you die.

If you want to contact me again my e mail address is phyllis.mason1@ virgin.net

P>E Mason

Hi Phyllis, Thank you for contacting me. I hope my enquiry regarding the descendants of William Goode has not caused a rift between you and your daughter, it was never my intention to start some family feud, all I wanted was to place the book in the hands of the right people.
As I have said all along, I am only willing to give the book to the eldest surviving male line of John Goode (the eldest son of William). This I am still very much hoping to do, I am still making enquiry's.
You mention that you have already read the book when your mother gave it to you to read when you were very young, and that your sister took it from your house in the 1970's. If that is the case then something doesn't add up. As I have already told your daughter the book has been in my possession since I was the age of around 13/14 which was in the early to mid 60's - I have looked after it ever since. So you can appreciate that I have become very protective of it. That is why I made a hand-written copy myself, so that I would not have to handle it too much. The pages of the book itself are in pretty good condition but it really could do with being re-bound by a professional as the outer binding is little worse for wear, although I have done my best to keep it intact. Had it not been for my father rescuing it from a skip and my own diy preservation of it, it would have been lost for ever. I am telling you all this Phyllis in the hope that you can understand my reluctance to let it out of my hands until I am certain it is going to the right people.
Can you tell me what happened to the book your sister took? If some connection could be made between the time that your sister had it in her possession, and the time that my father found it in the skip, then we would know it is the same book. It was discovered in a skip on the premises of 'Hall Brothers Steel' (a steel stock holding firm in West Bromwich) the place has long since gone - the company was swallowed up by British Steel. Maybe this will help to shed a little light on how it got where it did. Did you or your sister have a relative who may have worked there or may have had some connection with the firm? I appreciate that your sister may no longer be with us, but if she is maybe you could ask her about it, or if not maybe a son or daughter of hers, maybe they might be able to shed some light on it.
I think the idea of there being two copies would be fantastic. I agree with you when you say he was a determined man, you can tell it clearly from his writing. Either way I am afraid I am not willing to let it out of my hands. I am sorry to disappoint you but I'm sure you will appreciate the predicament I am in. As yet there is only yourself who has come to my attention, but I am sure that if other descendants (and I have no doubt that by now there are probably quite a few) knew about it's existence a great deal more would come forward. If I let it out of my hands on a regular basis anything could happen to it. I'm sorry to be going on again but as you can probably tell by now I feel very strongly about it - I feel as though I have almost been given this as one of my tasks in life.
I don't know anything about you or your family and you have no idea who I am or anything about me. In this day and age it is only to easy to be the victim of some fraudulent scheme or other, so if that might be in the back of you or your daughter's mind please let me try to assure you that I am a genuine person with no hidden agenda. When I find the descendants I am seeking I will gladly hand it over. I stress that I am not looking for any financial reward or recompense, all I want is for it to be where it should be, and where William intended it to be.
At the risk of repeating myself, as I told your daughter I am willing to give out any information contained in the book to you or any proven descentent, just ask. And if there is any other information you can provide me with it would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Peter.

PS. It would be better to contact me in the future at my personal email address. Your daughter should have it in the email I sent her.

Dear Sir. I am Phyllis Mason Great grandaughter of a William Goode who lived in West Street Warwick. My daughter Julia Wills did get in touch with you aboout the book you say you have, however she seems to have lost interest in the matter due to us haveing a disagreement as I am 94 I guess I get a bit awkward at times.

I have known of the existance of a book writtrn by William Goode since I was very young indeed My mother gave it to me to read before she died, my sister took it from my house and I never saw it again all this happened in the 1970.
I cannot understand why if your book was written by the same person why he would want to make two copies of the same
work but then he did seem to be a very determined man.

I would really like to see the copy you have, I to live in the west midlands. My post code begins CV4 from that you will know the townI live in

Hi Peter
Thank you for getting back to me and sorry for my taking so long to reply.
I have recently managed to find one source naming John Goode's wife and children but as there are some queries I am not sure how reliable it is.
There is also another connection with someone "down under" but I have not contacted them yet.
I too live in West Midlands so it may make it easier for us to communicate, in the meantime my email is julia.wills@tiscali.co.uk so hope to hear from you soon so that we can share our research.
Best wishes Julia

GOODE Janet B. Ventolo - Ohio

Janet B. Goode died Feb. 17, 2008 at Kettering Medical Center. She was 82.

Jan was born in Steubenville, Ohio the eldest child of Dorothy and Joe Ventolo, although in recent years she claimed to be the youngest, an assertion her brother Joe (Herky) Ventolo of Enon, Ohio cheerfully backed up.

On Christmas Eve 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, James Goode of Blanchester, Ohio.
In 1953 she and Jim moved to the white house on the corner in Lytle, Ohio, where she continued to raise their children after Jim’s death in 1960.
Jan began her career as a newspaper woman doing reviews for the Kettering Oakwood Times of Antioch College plays in exchange for tickets. S
he worked for the Western Star in Lebanon, Ohio, for over 30 years as a reporter, editor and long time columnist of the “Mother Tongue,” in which she chronicled her life with four children and offered her observations on life in general. Her children all managed to survive the notoriety. During her tenure at the Western Star, she played mother hen to the younger writers with warmth and humor and won many awards for her writing.
She left the Western Star in the 1980s for the communications department at Kettering Medical Center, but continued her column.

Jan loved words, music, Lake Hope and Ireland. For years she was a regular visitor to Canal Street Tavern. She was a talented photographer. She loved people and kept enough food on hand to feed anyone who might possibly drop by for however long they might want to stay.

Jan will be missed by anyone who ever needs to know the words of a song, how to spell a word, where the best fossil hunting beds are, anything about Emily Dickinson or King Arthur, but especially by her family, Deb, Andy, Alex Jerison and Ben Whitmer, David, Jess, Stephanie Goode and Selwa Whitesell, Jim Goode, Chelsea Mellon, Johanna Goode and Becca Heskamp, Carolyn, Rosa and John Paul Jones, her brother and his wife, Joe and Martha Ventolo, her great-grandchildren Graham Mellon, Maddie and Jack Whitmer, as well as various cousins, nieces and nephews.

Services were held at Lytle United Methodist Church on Feb. 20. Should anyone wish, donations may be made in her name to the Mary L. Cook Library, 381 Old Stage Road, Waynesville, Ohio 45068 or any other library to help share her love of reading and words.

Hi Julia, It does look like the info you have provided does fit the details in the book, except that William says that Emma was born in 1854 - but that could just be a lapse in his memory as he was getting on a bit when he wrote it.
The book came into my possession when I was about 14, as I am now 57 you can see how long I have had it.
All my life I have been interested in collecting anything old so when my father came home from work one day with an old hand-written book he had fished out of a skip I was very interested. How it got into that skip I do not know, but had it not been for my father it would have been lost for ever. He worked as a driver for Hall Bros Steel Stockholders at the time and the skip was on their premises being filled with rubbish from the offices, while they were being refurbished.
The pages of the book were in a good state of repair but the cover and binding was in need of attention. I did my best to repair it and it has remained in the same state ever since, kept it in a drawer away from sunlight. To make sure it remained in the best condition I made a copy of it so that I would not have to keep thumbing through the pages whilst checking information.
I have tried from time to time to try and trace the descendants of Will Goode, but always to no avail, until now. Sites like this have provided a great deal of info which before was extremely difficult to obtain. I have been tracing my own ancestry for some time now and as I have come to a bit of a dead end I thought I would have another go at trying to find the family of Will Goode - hence the message.
As I stated I am trying to trace the eldest male line. I think that it is the only proper way to go, as I imagine by now there could a hundred or more descendants, all legitimate, all with a right to it. So could you or your mother possibly provide me with any info as to what happened to John Goode (the eldest son who emigrated to New Zealand). Unfortunately William wrote nothing more about him after he left.
The book itself covers his life from when he was born to when he was an old man in the early 1900's after his wife Sarah had passed away. There is a register of Births and Deaths in the back and the whole is about 270 pages long.
The opening preface says: "Autobiography of Will Goode written by himself for the personnel of his family showing to some extent the struggle in life and Gods dealings with him in providence and grace. April 10th 1894."
Could you tell me where you are based? I live in the West Midlands, UK. As Ancestry.com is world-wide you could be anywhere and that might mean communication only by email or through this site.
I am quite prepared to give any member of the family info from the book but I am afraid I will not let it out of my hands until I am sure it is going the right person/persons, I hope you can understand that.

Regards,

Peter.

PS. Sorry for the delay in writting to you.

William Goode is my great great grandfather. He was born in Yardley Hastings, Northants on 15 July 1823. He was the 2nd son of John Goode and his mother was Jane Swaine. She died in 1831 and John Goode remarried Sarah a few years later. The family were very poor and I believe William went to work when he was only 9years old as an Ag lab.

William was married in 1845 to Sarah Adams, moved to Warwick in about 1845 and they had 8 children. Their 5th child was Emma born in 1857 she is my great grandmother.

Although I realise I am not a decendent through the male line I would be very interested in at least seeing the book which you refer to.
My mother, Phyllis Mason aged 94 is Emma's grand daughter and has asked me to contact you on her behalf through her membership of ancestry

We look forward to your reply
Julia Wills (nee Mason)
Decendants of John Goode

Can anyone help with my search for the decendants of John Goode. As I understand he was born in Northhampton, England 30th Sept 1846. His parents were William and Sarah Goode. I am not sure when but he emigrated to New Zealand some time before 1880. He was the eldest son, and this is why I am trying to trace his line. I have an autobiography, hand written by his father (William) dated 1894. It is quite clear that his intention was for his descendants to have this book as a record of his life. It is full of vital information and should be with the right family.
I myself am not related to John Goode in any way but if were, and was interested in researching my family history, I would kill for something like this.
I am quite willing to let the right family have this book, but let me say first that I will only let it go if a true line of descent can be proven. (In my eyes the only line it should follow is down through the eldest son, assuming a male line exists. Failing that I would be willing to pass it on to the descentants of the second eldest son - his name was George Goode and was born 6th April 1849 in Warwick, England).

My mother's father's name was James Silas Goode born the same year as your grandfather. I don't know much of the story but he was married to my grandmother and for some reason they divorced. My mother was about 4 at that time. She visited him and his new wife Susan for 2 weeks in the summer when she was about 10 or 11. I want to say they lived in RI or CT but not sure. I have often thought about who my mom's dad was but never pursued trying to find him so I really do not have alot of information. I am not sure where he was born or his parents names. I beleived he worked at Bethelem Steel in Baltimore MD. Please contact me if there could be any chance of this being the one and the same James Silas Goode.

I am not related. I grew up in Detroit with the Goode boys.
My older brother Jim was about the same age as Jim Goode. Age-wise I was between Jerry and Glenn. We all lived on Pierson Ave. in the Redford part of Detroit., bout a block apart. We all went to Christ the King Grade School. I went to U. of D. High School and they went to Catholic Central.

In 1955 I went away to college in Milwaukee and then into the service for three years and pretty much lost all contact with the Goodes.

I was talking to my brother Jim over the weekend and he asked if I knew what that happened to the Goodes. I do genealogy for my main hobby and thought I would check on the Internet to see what I could find. And lo and behold you responded.

The last I knew about any of the five brothers was as follows:

Jim: I ran into Jim in the 1970s. He lived about two blocks away in Canoga Park, Calif.

Don: He was working for General Motors as part of the crew that went around to schools with a bus or trailer or something from GM. That would have been in the 1960s

Dick: The only thing I knew about Dick was that he was a world-class/Olympic-caliber parachutist.

Jerry: Don't know what jhappened to him

Glenn: He became a coach for a couple of high schools in Detroit. I beleive I heard that he died relatively young.

My parents owned a cottage on Sand Point near Caseville in the Thumb. My Mother and us four kids would stay at the cottage all summer and my Dad would come up on weekends. Dad would look around the neighborhood and bring some kid or other up with him. Jerry and Glen came to the cottage on a number of occasions.

My Dad owned Grimes Cleaners on Gran River in Redford. My Aunt Lorraine owned the Redford bowling lanes.

What can you tell me about Dick and the others?

Bill Grimes
Round Rock, TX

Hello,

Odessa, I am Ron Goode

Yes, I do descend from the "Goode" line you are referring to in these communications. The Patriarch of our family is Richard Goode (1629-1719) of old Rappahannock County, Virginia. His son Richard (1670-1726) is the father of your Thomas the 1st (1724-1789) that married Mary Reynolds. Your Thomas 1st is the brother to Richard (1704-1743) from which my line descends.

If I can be of any help with your research for Thomas Goode, and those that came before him I would be very glad to share it. Although a long way from complete, I am currently writing a book on this family’s genealogy. I have a public tree on Ancestry.com with the name "Goode's of Old Rapphannock County, Virginia" that you may find helpful with sorting out these connections. I can be reached at the following email: thebuzzardsloft at the aol.com network.

Ron
We have found his marriage to Mary Reynells, and can follow him in NC, as I've described in an earlier note.

Is Ron Goode related to this line of Goodes?

Odessa Elliott

My Thomas Goode married Mary Reynells. I can trace him from Stokes Co., NC, by Will, to his son Thomas. This Thomas wrote a Will in 1824, stating that he was taking care of Thomas and William, the sons of his son Henry and Phoebe Blackburn Goode. The Will was filed for Probate in 1834. On the 1840 Census, Thomas is shown living in the Sauratown District and his profession is given as "basket weaver"; we have his marriage bond to Bettie Caudle in 1835. We have traced this couple through 1850, 1860, and 1870 Censuses. On the 1870 Census if my great-grandfather, Spencer Goode.
I would be glad to know how you know a Richard Goode was the father of "Thomas the husband of Mary R."?
Odessa Elliott
