Searching for Francetta Goodell

Francetta or Frances married George S Parker in Lenox Twp, MI in 1879, she is listed as being 16 and from WI, possibly Brown or Barron? I believe her mother may have been a Mary A Goodell, who was married to George's father Samuel Parker.
George and Francetta had a son Samuel H Parker and were living in Olivet, MI in the 1880 census.
I believe she may have either died or divorced George sometime between 1881 and 1893.
Any help or pssible links would be appreciated.

Hi Kenneth
I was doing some family research when I happened upon replys you and Tigerlily posted Re: Charles Kenneth Goodell
who was Uncle "Chuck" to me until he vanished from our life my last recollection of Charles was at my 5th or 6th birthday party in 1956 or 1957 in Minneapolis he has bought me a red firetruck with flashing lights that I have always remembered however he may have been at a family picnic at Como park in St Paul MN after that timebut in the late fifty's. Charles was my mother the late June Isabelle (Goodell) Elliott's youngest brother and she told me how she heard his first cry when he was born I guess that makes you my Uncle Paul Richard (Dick) Goodell's son Kenny from Topeka KS my mother and grandmother Maude Beatrice Goodell or Grandma "Bee" spoke about if so please to make this connection with you and look forward to exchanging information in the future thank you and to Tigerlily again for your information and posts by the way I am in the Southern Calif area
Thanks again
Stephen Elliott

obit for Lucy Goodell Struble, born 1868 Illinois, died 1920 Kansas

Glasco Sun, Cloud County, Kansas, April 1, 1920, page 1:
Lucy Goodell Struble
Lucy Goodell was born May 28, 1868, in Chanderville, Ill., and died March 22, 1920, at her home in Glasco, Kas., aged 51 years, 9 months and 24 days.
She graduated from the Jacksonville High School and attended the Jacksonville Female Academy. She taught in the public school and was supervisor and teacher of the Ill. Deaf and Dumb School at Jacksonville, in which capacity she was considered very proficient.
While connected with the Deaf and Dumb Institute she became betrothed to Dr. Andrew Struble and gave up her work to take a nurses' training course at Mercy Hospital, Chicago, that she might be a better companion and help-meet to her future husband who was then a student at Northwestern Univ. Medical School.
They were married June 9, 1897. To this union were born three sons -- Wm. Frederick, who died in infancy; George and Philemon, both of whom survive her. She was a member of the Congregational church from infancy, but transferred her membership to the methodist church in 1911. Mrs. Struble was a teacher in the Sunday school and a consistent worker in every branch of the church. She will be greatly missed by her church, and the community has lost a friend whose place will be hard to fill. "Ah, who shall lift the magic wand and the lost clew regain? The unfinished window in Alladin's tower unfinished must remain."
Mrs. Struble was a member and an officer of the Sunflower Club of this city. She was always interested and interesting. Always bringing good and helpful thots for all the members. Deep in her inner consciousness was the love of the beautiful; all that portends to the love of everything good and all that was best in literature and art was hers. In her girlhood days she had been a student of art, and in the club work she had a part that always brot the life and work of the best artists before every member, and created a liking for the highest and better things of life. She was interested in higher education, music, civic work, child welfare, and everything pertaining to the better good. In fact, she had a well developed and well rounded character; not satisfied with knowledge for itself alone but she might use it for the blessing of others.
Mrs. Struble was an ardent admirer of Frances E. Willard and Susan B. Anthony, and was always ready to assist in furthering the cause of prohibition and equal suffrage.
The following lines by Mrs. Struble speak eloquently of her ideals: "I would rather be a beggar and dwell in an attic, than be a king who did not love books." "Believe in your mission, greet life with a cheer; there's always a big work to do, and that's why we're here."
Mrs. Struble passed away Monday morning, March 22nd, after a brief attack of pneumonia.
Besides her husband and two sons, she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Wellireiter and Mrs. Susan West, both of Jacksonville, Florida; also three brothers, W.S. Goodell, of Virginia, Ill.; John Goodell of Beardstown, Ill.; and A.J. Goodell, of Jacksonville, Florida to mourn her departure.

Over 30 years ago I intervied a nephew of Justice Council Julian Goodell. At that time the nephew only knew of one child. Julian Oliver Goodell, a male born San Franciso, CA 1914. But you probably already know this. That is all I have.

C.J.s brothers and sisters had grandchildren that were living in Southern California the last I knew. But, that has been at least 28 years ago. Try looking in Taft, Kern County.

Frances Furnas Goodell, born 1878, wife of Willard A. Goodell, lived CT

I have an original 3-1/2”x5” cabinet card photograph signed “(with love) Frances Furnas - 1900”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and she looks to be about 20/22.

I found Frances in the 1886 Iowa census showing she was age 5, living with parents John M. and Mary E. in Belle Plaine (Benton Co.) IA. In 1900, the census of Franklin (Linn Co.) IA shows her with birthdate of Oct 1878, with same parents. Ancestry OneWorldTree shows Frances Edna Furnas born Oct 7, 1878 IA; died 18 Mar 1919 Plainville, CT. Her mother’s name was Mary Elizabeth Hutson. Frances was married in 1904 in “Manila” to Willard Arthur Goodell. In 1910, Frances and Willard lived in Brown Co., KS with one daughter.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Frances Furnas Goodell.

Everett served in the Civil war and settled in liecester ny. The family shows up in the 1850 census in Erie county Ny, As the Gooell family- Charles (b1796)/Minerva(b1808)/Aurilla A.b1850)/Harvey(b1844)/Everett(1847). By 1860 the family appears to be broken up. Everett is living with the Fargo family in perry. (1860 census)(Amelia living with another family? Kline?) I have been unable to lacate the others in the 1860 census. In 1870 Everett/Aurilla/and Minerva(now Boies) show up in Liecester ny as Goodale. Any info on the father? Charles born 1796 +-, Minerva 1808 +- (Burt born in Vermont?) Harvey born 1844 +- (I can't find a record beyond 1850)

I'm sorry to tell you that I have only traced my direct line back to immigrant Robert Goodale/Goodell. Many of these people moved across the line from western Mass. to Vermont and back again. I think that even in the mid 1800's if yours were in Vermont they were probably related and also descended from Robert. Why don't you post what you know for sure, names dates and birthplaces and I'll see if any of them show up on New England Historical and Genealogical Societies website databases.

I am way out in washington state and have had some difficulty distinguishing the many goodell families in vermont at that time. I know that a lot of goodells moved from the northeast to kansas around that time. thanks

Capt. Daniel S. Goodell, Jr., Searsport, Maine

I have no connection to this family. This is from the September 26, 1876 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"While the new ship Brown Brothers was rounding Cape Horn on her first voyage coming from New York to this port, at daybreak in June last, it then blowing a perfect gale and the sea running very high, one of the sailors was blown from the fore topmast into the high rolling billows. To lower a boat for the purpose of saving the man was out of the question. But the gallant commander of the ship, Capt. Goodell, Jr., in the twinkling of an eye had a line tied around his body, jumped overboard and saved the life of the half-drowned sailor. Such heroic conduct ought to be shown up as an exmaple for other seafaring men. (San Francisco Chronicle).

The Captain Goodell referred to above is a son of Daniel S. Goodell of Searsport."

The problem I am having is the same. I have never found reference to the name "Mira" being used. I have the original photo album of my ggm and on the photo she plainly wrote, "Miss Mira Goodell." on the back. As for the date of 1900, that is just a guess and I could be incorrect. She has a sister named "Mary Ivy" and I can see how Mira might have been a nickname for her.

One interesting thing is that on the original photo, a close inspection reveals what may be a wedding band on her left hand. This is interesting in that her name was written as "Miss."

Thanks for the reply!

I'm looking for James Vernice Goodell born about 1911 in Oklahoma although he and his sister, Ernestine, moved to Illinois with grandparents after his mother died. He married a lady named JaNon'Lee or something similar. Please reply as to whether this Jay & Vernie Goodell are the ones I am seeking. I do not know where they lived after marriage. J V was my dad's half-brother. I would so very much like to connect with that part of the family. Thanks, Joyce (Goodell) Martin Oscarshouse@valornet.com

Hmmm. I agree it looks like Edith Goodell (m. Jesse Phleger) but Edith was born in 1867 and you said the photo was from about 1900 -- the young woman in the photo doesn't look like she's in her 30s. Moreover, I've never heard that Edith was called 'Mira' and by 1900 her last name was Phleger.

Do you have a scan of the back of the photo with the name written on it?

Also, thanks for the link to the Goodell family photos!

I do not think it says, "Musa." I am sure it reads, "Mira." The Mira in my photo may be related to your family however. I found a website on the Goodell family (http://www.krepps.net/goodellphotoalbum.htm) and there is a photo there that shows an "Edith Goodell," whose full name is "Edith May" and she looks a lot like the photo I have. This person did have ties to Humboldt Co., Iowa also so it may be a possibility. I think Edith was the sister of the Otis Ray you mentioned.

Thank you for the reply.

Is it possible that the name on the photo is not Mira but Musa? Musa Maud Sherman, b. 1880, married Otis Ray Goodell in Rutland (Humboldt County), Iowa in 1901. Otis was my great-grandfather's younger brother. There's still a Goodell family reunion in Humboldt every August.

Hi All,
Here's what I have in my notes.
The Sailing of the ship "Elizabeth" from Ipswich, England, to Salem, Massachusetts, is noted in many reference books, found at your local genealogical libraries.
A copy of " A Genealogy of the Descendents of Robert Goodale/ Goodell of Salem Massachusetts", by George Williams, copyright 1984, may also be found in the New York City Public Library, Third Floor Genealogical section.
From "New World Immigrants". Founders of New England, page 42/43.
(The following List of New England Emigrants are from Her Majesty's State Paper Office. They cannot be referred to by volumes at present, as the papers, among which they are, are undergoing a re-arrangement; a condition which usually precludes examinations. But through the kindness of Mr. Sainsbury, under whose supervision they are being arranged and calendered, I have been indulged with the privilege of examinations, and allowed to make copies).
IPSWICH- A note of the names and ages of all the Passengers which took shipping in the Elizabeth of Ipswich Mr. William Andrews bound for New England the last of April, 1634.
From the " History of Woodstock, Conn., Genealogies of Woodstock Families".
Robert Goodell- First Generation- born England, 1604
Died Salem, Mass., 1683. Married Cathrine, born England, 1606. Cathrine was 28 years old when she came to New England in 1634. Robert Married Margaret as his second wife. Margaret, living with him in 1682, was mentioned in his will. Robert came to New England, April 1634 in the ship "Elizabeth" from Ipswich, Suffolk Co., England was granted a house lot and acre of land in 1636, another 20 acres in 1639, and by 1651/52 had acquired 480 acres in Salem, Mass.. He sold on March 15, 1660 to Giles Corey 50 acres called the "Corey Farm".
The Grand-parents of Robert were probably members of the Godelle or Godell Family, French Huguenots who emigrated in 1530 to London. The name appears as Goodell, Goodale, Goodall, or as the late Isaac Goodell mentioned, as "some of the eighteen varieties". Baptiste Godelle appeared with Shakespeare before Queen Elizabeth in "Henry VIII", in "Old John Gudyill", the butler in Scott's "Old Mortality", is seen as another spelling.

In 1978 Ethel Goodell Clark complied "My Goodell Family in America 1634-1978"
part of which reads:
"Three hundred and forty-four years ago, Robert Jr. and Catherine Kilham Goodell came to America. They, with their three small children set sail from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England, April 30, 1634 on the ship Elizabeth; William Andrews, Captain, and landed at Salem, Massachusetts.
"The first reference to the Goodells in England, according to the Reverant Isaac Goodell Memorial Tablets (C. O. Harvey & Co., Fort Worth, Texas , 1892) was in 1530 when they migrated from France at the time of the Huguenot persecutions. In France the family name was known as Godelle/Goodelle.
"In 1589 when William Shakesphere was twnety-five and had become one of the proprietors of Blackfriars Theater, London, he had among his professional companions, one Baptiste Godelle, who made his first appearance with Shakespere before Queen Elizabeth in Henry VI. His name posted on various bills is spelled Goodell, Goodall, Goodale.
**The Robert that came to America is Jr. for his father was Robert Sr. and his **mother Joan Artys. No records have been found to indicate that Robert Sr. **ever left England.**
"Soon after his arrival in Salem, Robert Jr. was given a grant of forty acres situated between the Ipswich River, the Reading Road and the Newburryport turnpike. On February 13, 1652, Salem, 'laid out' to him 504 acres. On March 15, 1660, he sold fifty acres to Giles Cory.
"Perley, in his "History of Salem" tell us: "The planters sought the springs in the early days and built their houses as near to them as possible. The most noted of these sources of water is Cold Spring in North Salem. Cold Spring was so called in 1793. It was known as Goodell's Spring as early as 1658 because Robert Goodell lived in the field northerly of it at the time.
"Robert was apparently active in civic affairs as he is mentioned often in the records of Salem.
"Longfellow, in one of his New England Tragedies, in telling of Giles Cory's trail for witchcraft, a witness, one Goody Mary, says:
'Look! Look! It is the ghost of Robert Goodell,
Whom fifteen years ago this man did murder
by stamping on his body! In his shroud
he comes here to bear witness to the crime!'
"Longfellow really took a bit of poetic license in the details as it was not Robert, but his son, Jacob, whose death was caused by Corey.
(See notes under Jacob Goodell for details of the events of this crime.)

Robert married (2) MARGARET LAZENBY of Exeter, NH in 1669 (Torrey, marriage contract 1669) (The History of Salem, Mass.) (LDS/AF, 30 Aug 1669) (Williams, 1647). He entered into an agreement with her to settle on twelve acres of her land and build a house there. He also promised two cows and a riding horse for the property. His son, Jacob, was to inherit this property after Margaret's death. Margaret was mentioned in Robert's will of 1682.

According to Bowen's account and the History of Salem, they made their home at Salem, "in the field northeasterly of Cold Spring in North Salem," where he was granted a house lot and an acre of land in 1636. He obtained another 20 acres in 1639 and 1652. By 1651, he had 480 acres of land in Salem. On 15 Mar 1660, he sold 50 acres to Giles Corey called the "Corey Farm." He gave generous acreages of land to his sons and daughters as wedding gifts. George E. Williams gives the following account of his land:

...the first record of the Goodells in America [at Salem], indicated that they settled at Great Cove in the North Fields. This Spring, so often mentioned in the early records in what was later called Liberty Hill Park, was on Robert Goodell's farm and was known for the first half century of Salem's history as Goodell's Spring. It is not recorded how he acquired this first farm. However, in 1636 and in 1638 he received grants of twenty acres each in that portion of the town which became known as Salem Village, and he gradually acquired by purchase similar grants made to other early settlers, until by 1651, he was the owner of a tract of land at Bald Hill comprising four hundred and eighty acres, which was confirmed to him by a town grant on November 7, 1651. He probably moved to this new property at about that time, and, as opportunity offered, disposed of his Great Cove farm, deeding the house and a portion of the land to his son-in-law, John Smith in 1658. Another lot was conveyed to Nicholas Manning in 1667, and a third conveyance was probably made to John Orne, who owned a part of the property, hitherto unconveyed in 1684.

Robert was a farmer. "He was a man of piety, of education, of considerable wealth, of great strength of character, a helper in all important matters --- such was our ancestor, Robert Goodell" (Versailles). In 1670, the people of Salem petitioned for a church of their own and Robert Goodell's signature is on that document. Robert does not appear to have taken part in govenment affairs.

Cherichetti, Jane E., letter. 9 August 2004, to Roy, Robert A..
Hi,
I have Margaret Killam as the mother of Robert's children but if I remember correctly someone said that was incorrect and the mother of his children was his second wife. SO, I am unxure which is correct. Later this evening I will try to see what I can find on New England Ancestors databases and try to get the right info for both of us. My ancestor Lucy was also a Robert Goodell descendant.
Don T.

I saw your note posted in May last year.

My ancestor is Robert Goodell who arrived at Salem 1634. One of his sons adopted the Goodale spelling for his surname.

I'm trying to verify data about Robert's second marriage to Margaret Lazenby and the death of Robert's first wife Katherine.

My memory is that Margaret had a son James from her first marriage and that she had some connection to Vermont. I believe that the union with Margaret produced a daughter, Elizabeth?, born 1649 after the eighth child of Katherine was born 6 jun 1645 as Hannah.

Do your notes shed any light on these subjects?
