My grandfather was Leonardo Rivera Gordillo, from Comerio, Puerto Rico and was born late 1890's. I've been told that his father came from the Canary Islands. He was somewhat tall, light skinned with red hair. All my aunts were red heads. He pasted away in 1976.

Hola,

What a shame to be reading this so late. Your story sounds very familiar to mine, and I just happen to have my aunts and mother here talking about our surname, and when I saw your post, my aunt was practically in tears. She claims to know Augustine and that was her second uncle. My grandmother died about 6 years ago, her name was Marina Gordillo Guzman which my aunt claims that your your mother in laws, Augustine, was my grandmother's uncle. She was a single child, her mother, died right after she was born. There is very little information, but my grandmother did come from Guanajuato Mexico. She married (a Gordillo, claiming to be distant cousin, Telesforo Gordillo) and moved later towards Tamaulipas settling in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. Hope you find this message and maybe we can share more info. This reading has brought many memories for both my aunt, mom, and myself. :) Good day!

Hello Alma,
I too am looking for relatives of Gordillo family. My mother-in-law was Guadalupe Gordillo Guzman, and came to the US from Uriangato, Gto. She married Margarito Garcia from Penhamo. I know that there are still relatives in that area and I am very interested in finding some of them. One, a cousin, used to have a little store on a corner in Uriangato however, I don't remember her name. the last time I saw her was about 35 years ago. She would probably be in her 70's by now. I will get her name if I can and let you know more.

I beleive the surmane Panyaqua was in there somewhere. Maybe her mother's family. Her ancestory is via Spain, however she was born and raised in Uriangato, Guanajuato. She, too was fair with beautiful hazel eyes. Her brother was a tall man with the most fabulous mustache. They are both gone now and I am trying find some history about the family. I know there are still some relatives in Uriangato but I have no idea how to even begin to find them.

I have read several messages here regarding the Gordillo ancestory. Quite interesting. I would like to communicate with those of you who have roots in Guanajuato Mexico. I am trying to trace the family roots for my children. As I mentioned before, my mother in law was Guadalupe Gordillo Guzman She had a brother named Agustine Gordillo Guzman who died about 30 years ago in Uriangato Gto. I know there are still some relatives living in Morelia and the Uriangato areas. His second wife was much younger than him. Please write me if you think you might have some ties to this family or may have some useful information. As I understand Agustine had some land along the side of a mountain in the Uriangato area and used share croppers to farm the land after he quite farming. They lived in the city and had a cousin who owned a little corner store. I understand there were some relatives living in Morelia.
Thanks for any information GG

Is there any way of contacting you all via email? I have only just discovered this message board and was experimenting with it to see if I could get any information on the name Galea. Imagine my excitement at discovering the Malta/Spanish connection. My children's grandfather was Edward Phipps (Galea), his brother was Eddie (Edmund?) and I know they have family in the United Kingdom and Spain. I believe Edward (now deceased) lived in Egypt, married Josephine Farahat, and worked for the British Airforce. They had 3 children, George, Frank and Sonia. Frank was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1945. The family, I believe went to England for a few years before migrating to New Zealand sometime in the mid to late 1950s or early 1960s. I would love to hear from anyone who can give me any more information about my children's paternal roots. Josephine still lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

The Gordillos came into Mexico via Chiapas. Chiapas was part of Guatemala until 1828. In Chiapas and Guatemala we are not few and far between. Rather, "somos un chingo" There are many different branches of the Clan, which appears to have originated inSpain. in the late 80's, the National Geographic published a Map of the travels of olumbus and it showed a Francisco Gordillo traveling in the Caribean Sea, way back in the early 1500's. We may actually have 'marrano' (converted jew) lines also...check out the google search engine and you'll see how many of us there are

Regarding your Jan. 28, 2002 post: My grandfather was Clemente Gordillo Holguin (1915-1987), who lived in the Mesilla Valley of New Mexico. Clemente's parents were Teofilo Holguin (~1883-1943) and Maria "Paz" Gordillo (~1880-1953), both from Chihuahua. They came to the La Mesa, NM area in 1908. Their other children were Manuelita and Petasio Holguin. Maria "Paz" Gordillo's mother's maiden name was possibly Cardenas. Is my grandfather the person you seek? Do you or anyone else know anything else about Maria "Paz" Gordillo?

My father was born in La Mesa, New Mexico. My grandfather was also born in New Mexico. His name was Ascencion. Ascencion had two daughters, Amalia and Carmen. Amalia's mother died in childbirth. He was not Carmen's father, but he had two sons from Carmen's mother, Rufino and my father, Ernesto. My father died last year and I am searching for my Uncle Rufino, who lives somewhere in Los Angeles County. I want to tell him about my father's passing in June of last year. I have been unsuccessful in finding him. It is surprising how people can disappear. We are related to the Holguins of the Mesilla Valley.

Dear Alma: Although I am not Mexican, I have some information about a one Eleno Gordillo who is probably dead by now who wrote me in 1984. He was Mexican, Born 08-18-1901 in San Luis de Cordero, Durango, Mexico and said that his ancestors were from Spain, Nicolas and Felix Gordillo who immigrated from Spain and were given a large tract of land from which they started a mine called "Boca De Cobre" in 1867. Hope this helps in your search.

Felix Gordillo
Tampa, Florida

I have been looking for Gordillo's for over twenty five years. We are few and far between. I am fairly tall, white skin, hazel eyes and light brown hair (when I was young) but my great-grandfather was from the Canary Islands (Islenos), migrated to Cuba but left Cuba in 1892 for Key West, Florida and then moved to Tampa. I am curious how the name got to Mexico.
