Hi Simon.
Yes, a John Goring was mentioned in George Goring Junior's will (1728) as George's brother. I think John had died by 1750 s, when only George's daughter Martha survives from this branch of the family.
Around the same period, there is also a John Goring who owns land on the parish boundary between Chailey and Barcombe; but whether it is one and the same John I don't know.

All best wishes,
Sally

Hi Sally,
Unfortunately none of those names feature in my tree, however the location seems close.
There are several unexplored branches from the early part of the tree I have, so maybe there is a link and it would explain the will I have from the 1600 s which left land and money which seems to have disappeared at some time in the past.

Sorry I can't help, but let me know if you get further back, specifically if anyone called John Goring appears as this I have back to 1550 ish.

Simon

Thanks, Simon for your swift reply.
The Gorings I'm interested in are George Goring Junior, and his heir Martha Goring. George was the son of George Goring Senior and Elizabeth Newnham. George Junior married Elizabeth Egles in 1701, and his will was probated 1728/9. He owned substantial property in Chailey and Barcombe, some of which he inherited from his maternal grandfather, John Newnham. He may have built Ades House (between 1701 and 1728), which Martha inherited. But I'm not clear where the bulk of the Ades estate came from, and whether some or all of it had belonged to the Coppard family. We own the medieval house sandwiched between Ades Pleasure Ground/lake and the road at Coppard's Bridge (built circa 1475) and we are trying to trace its history. But cannot get back before 1780, by which time it was part of the Ades Estate.
Many thanks for any help you can give us

Hi Yvonne,

It is quite possible that you are related to the Gorings of Barbados. Suriname isn't far away and there were a few Gorings who migrated to Guyana, so maybe their descendants moved into Suriname as well.

I'm from the Cayman Islands, and my great grandfather moved here from Barbados in 1905. He had a sister named Edith Ritta Goring that lived in Guyana and Ghana, West Africa. I would do research on her to see if she is your ancestor.

I hope this helps.

Kevin

Hi there,

I have connections to some of the Gorings on your orginal list of names, and I wondered if you might be able to help me please?

My dad's family is related to Thomas Goring (born 1837 in Barton or Burton, Staffs). Thomas's parents were William Henry Goring, (who was a gamekeeper, born 1815-20 in Barton/ Burton, Staffs) and Elizabeth Goring, nee Redfern.
(born roughly around the same time, in Tamworth)

Thomas moved to Scotland and etablished his own family in the Edinburgh/ East Lothian region, but I am really struggling to trace William H and Elizabeth any further back than the 1871 census, when they were living in Boreaton Cottage, Baschurch, Shropshire, with 3 adult children, Sarah, Henry amd William.

I wonder if you have any further details that might help please? He was a Seaman.. His wife was one of the slaves that he brought back here where they had John Goring. I don't really know too much as we are still researching.. I am sure there were many Gorings but you never know.. it's a long shot. Get in touch if you think we can help each other. Dee

I believe I have a male who went to Barbados in the 1600, then there is a gap until the 1700's. I can pretty much follow the line from their to their migration to the US in 1901. I also know the family had slaves until it was abolished, and they became servants.

I don't have a Canadian connection.

You asked: Are the Barbados Gorings connected to the English Gorings?
------------------

There were dozens of English settlers in Barbados from the south of England. They were well-off landowners who probably owned slaves. I assume the black Barbadians took their names from the property owners after slavery was abolished in the early 1800's.

I cannect connect the Shropshire Gorings with the South-of-England Gorings. The Shropshire Gorings were wroking people-- iron workers, pottery works etc.

Good luck with C.J. Henry Goring.
