I am interested in corresponding with African Americans who have the surname Gorman in their ancestry. My gg-grandfather was Thomas Gorman, a mulatto freedman who raised his family near Brinkley and Conway, Ar around 1870. Our family is hosting our first Gorman Family Reunion in August and would like to contact as many related Gormans as possible.

The Catherine (Kate) that John Gorman married may have had the maiden name of Jones. She did have 3 children from a previous marriage named George (1889), Margaret (1890) and Edward Joseph (1897). The initial for their last name was "H" in the census records. They were living with John and Kate in the early 1900's

This isn't a lot to work with but I'm assuming you have Woods, Barkers, Lees, and Bowens somewhere in your family. Your mothers side? These are families I know well. John (Francis?) Gorman may have shipped out of Ireland but everything about him reads Pennsylvania "German." If he was from Northern Ireland, he very well could have been considered a Scot. Which would make more sense being that he is surrounded by Welsh, Dutch, and German families. Ireland was a major shipping point. Because of this, many people assume that their relatives are Irish...but really, that is just where they got on the boat. Anyway, it might be worth looking into the German surname Görmann. The "German" Görmann and "Irish" Gorman are still historically related... But this makes more sense with what I think I know of John Francis. He surrounded himself almost completely with "German" families. This would be an odd move for the truly Irish. Anyway, the Scots in Ireland go way back with Germans. The regular Irish do not.

Milopuck, you are right. A lot of our people transitioned into "mainstream" American & didn't want people to know their history because they had been discriminated against in Ireland. A lot wanted a new start in America. I suspect all of the Gormans are related in some fashion.

My greatgrand father, John was born in 1889 worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. They came from RI. And before that Ireland.

You ARE finding out about your family. Gormans (sometimes seen as Gormon) were a traveling bunch. This is a specific name to a very specific group of people. It wasn't rare, and very openly and widely known, until about the 1920s. Being that you have never heard about this from any of your relatives, I suspect it was your grandmothers generation that "transitioned" into the family that you know now...and they most likely never spoke of it again. This is a common story for MILLIONS of Americans in this country.

My tree is public but I doubt it will offer any immediate help. My family was an older generation of Romani and Jews that came here (mostly) in the 1700s. The Gorman family was around my family from 1890 to 1930 because of a common interest in the traveling performances based out of Indiana/Florida. They did business together but had very little personal dealings with each other.

You should get to know these other Gormons. They ARE talking about your people.

Let me give you an example of finding families on this board. Several yrs. ago, a man in Liverpool, England contacted me on this board regarding my grandfather's side that I was searching. He had a family member in Arizona who had a genetic disease who was searching family roots. I told him I didn't have any family out west and he said yes, I did. I was hesitant to talk to this lady, but once I did I found out she is my second cousin. My grandfather had a sister who married a non Irish person in late 1800s & she was kicked out of the clan. I also always was told that there were only 2 boys who migrated from Ireland--my grandfather's father & brother. Wrong. I now know they got a ship from Liverpool & brought a sister with them who settled in Atlanta. I have learned so much from this board. Keep an open mind and you too might find some long lost relatives. Good Luck

Traveling Lady, I did read your original post where you posted that you have been looking for history of Gormans for a long time. Now you want to pick & choose which Gormans you are related to.Are you really interested in your genealogy? Genealogy is indiscriminate. My Gormans (& I would imagine the families of the other Gormans posting) would have all come to America from Ireland through New York. Some of my family probably stayed in the Northeast, while others migrated south to find other family members who had migrated earlier.
Most would have sailed from the port at Liverpool, as my family did. How do you know which Gormans you are kin to? Please learn to research with an open mind

Google Shelta language. You can pull up a lot of phrases that you will probably recognize. My Gorman side has dark complexion & very Gypsy looking. My grandmother had dark red hair, green eyes, & dark complexion. Her brother had black hair, black eyes, and dark. It was interesting to read that the Gormans lived as part of the Melungeons. That is a very unique group.. Google them. I didn't realize that Travellers were part of them too. So much great info on this board. Thanks to all

I am just beginning to research and already this is so fascinating! I had not known of the Melungeon peoples. My Gormans moved around quite a lot, but did live in trailer courts in Indiana. I don't recall hearing anyone in the family label the language as Shelta, or Cant, but I have seen many familiar words on Traveller websites. It was never written, and always spoken as a mixture with English words, very low and fast, with a kind of Irish lilt. As a young girl in school, my cousins and I got some odd glances when we spoke together using it. My Gorman group were/are very fair skinned (pinkish)with dark or light curly hair.

I have read some about the Melungeons and that they were Gypsies/Traveller blood. In the 1700s-mid 1900s there was limited access by transportation & it is understandable that people didn't migrate or visit once settled. I only have my Gormans back to my grandmother, born in 1880. Her mother was a McDonald & her sister, who married a Mulholland, raised her after her Mom died. She had a brother, John, raised by his Dad who would come to visit once a yr. I remember him from when I was a child. This is a tough group to research. I give up & then start again every 2-3 yrs. Since your family was isolated, did you speak a form of Shelta language or did they have their own

Sorry I don't have more for you. I know the Gorman family as cousins of cousins. When you read about the early Traveler and Romani families that "assimilated" into the "Melungeon" areas of Eastern Kentucky---these are my people. My people stayed isolated from 1790 to about 1890 in Wolfe, Magoffin, and Breathitt counties. There was some initial contact with other families when they started to move out of KY into Indiana and Ohio (early 1900s) --- but by then they seemed to have too many differences. My grandmother, Arizona Rose, was the very last of the old family. She died a few years back. I just like putting little tidbits of information out there for those who suspect that there is something that isn't adding up in their family tree. There are about 300,000 people in this country, that I know of, who have NO idea who there great grandparents really were.

I always thought the media exaggerated that story on Toogood, but in all groups guess there are good & bad. Is your Dad deceased? If not he may know his mom's maiden name. If you find anymore info on Gormans, I would love to hear. My grandmother Annie (Gorman was maiden name)--her mom was a McDonald who died when she was very young. That is as far as I have been able to get. I know there is Fury blood in there, but don't know how it comes in

How interesting! I did find a little link- the infamous Madelyne Gorman Toogood is a cousin of mine - second or third cousin- distressing story - I remember nothing but kindness from my Traveller family - my brother and I were never even spanked. I remember a funny incident we were told by our mom to "wait till your father gets home" after some mischief we had done, and instead of spanking us, Dad took off his belt, folded it and made cracking noises by snapping the belt and told us to yell like we were being punished. My Traveller childhood was extremely pleasant, I remember camping out in state parks with cousins and all sleeping together in rented cabins. A huge, fun family who didn't take anything very seriously. We did none of the overblown makeup and splashy dress- what a mystery

Early Travellers were excellent horse trainers & alot worked as horse & mule people. This would have been in 1800s. There were Gormans in the Shreveport area in 1960s and that is only 45 miles from Marshall. There is a Gorman Rd. in Shreveport too. Wonder if that would have any connection. Since my grandmother only had one brother and they didn't come around often, I have never been able to track any of them down. My grandmother's mother died when she was young & she was raised by relatives, so even she didn't have too much info on the Gormans. They have always been a mystery to me.

Her maiden name is very important.Did you stay in touch with any relatives from Traveler side? You might want to try to make contact with some to get info on her and to just understand the lifestyle & perhaps learn the language. Where do you remember going in Texas.
My experience is quite similar. I have traced the other side of the family to 1510 in England, and found much detailed information. I do not know Annie's maiden name. I do know that Travellers married within the group, and all my cousins, aunts and uncles' last names were Costello, Carrol, Carrigan ( or Kerrigan), and Sherlock. I have seen these names associated with Murphy Village in North Carolina, but our Traveller family was in Indiana, although we spent time in Florida, Georgia, and Texas in the winter.I hope to make a connection some day in my research. I would love for my kids to know the Traveller heritage.

What was Annie's maiden name? The Gorman side is hard to find info on. I have traced my other side back to the ship they sailed on from Liverpool England (even though they were from Ireland). I really believe the Gorman side has the Gypsy blood as my grandmother looked very Gypsy & some of the Travellers have intermarried with Gypsies as we are all "Traveling people." I hope you can find more info about your roots. Travellers have a proud and unique heritage.
Thanks! - I have that Aunt Annie was born in 1988, but that is not certain. She had my father, James ( no middle name), Catharine (spelled that way)- Bartley, or Bartholomew, and perhaps two more children. I lived as a Traveller until my parents divorced in 1967 when I was 16 - my brother James Patrick stayed with Aunt Annie, Catharine, Bartley ( we called him Uncle Buck)- and my mother and I left. I have not seem the Traveller part of the family since.

I do have pictures. I have a few more pictures of my great-grandparents, Frank & Rosie, than of Fred & Laura Bell. I really need to get them scanned & on-line. If you need pictures, I sure can send them. Stephanie
