Hi Cheryl, Sorry it's taken awhile to answer you. I can give you some information, maybe you could email me and ask me what you need to know. Here is a bit of information you may not have. Thomas Francis died in 1887, Isabella Gorringe died on 24th April, 1918 at "Fernleigh" at the age of 83. The Gorringe's had "Fernleigh" until after James Augustus Gorringe died in the Royal Hobart Hospital on the 30/9/1943. Lloyd Septimus Gorringe was James's brother and the property was left to him. Lloyd came over from Queensland to sell the property "Ferleigh" by W G Webster P/L., by Auction on the 17/8/1944, the house and all the furniture. Early on in the 1800's there was a tennis court on "Fernleigh" and games of tennis were played there competitively with other towns. Hope this helps, I have a lot more info if you need.

Regards, Colleen

Hello, my maiden name was Gorringe and am related to these 2 people you are enquiring about, they came out here from Brighton, England with other family members on the Ship Surrey and arrived here in August 1820, were granted land in Green Ponds, which is now re-named Kempton, in Tasmania. I have done a family tree and of course know quite a bit about these two, if you need to know any information please email me.

Regards,
Colleen Reason (nee Gorringe)

Re: Thomas Gorringe m Eliza Franks; ENG > Tasmania 1830

I am responding to your query about Ruth Mills. My great great grandfather, Thomas Gorringe, married Eliza Franks at Burwash, England, and came out to Tasmania in 1820 with seven existing children, his sister Elizabeth and members of the Franks family. His second son, Thomas, married (1)Georgina Johnstone and (2) Isabella Burnet. There were two daughters from the first marriage and seven sons (one died in infancy) from the second marriage.
The third son, Frank Alexander, (13.9.1863 - 21.10.1932) married Ruth Mills (born 8.11.1884) in Brisbane. A daughter, Audrey, was born about 1915, twin daughters, Rita and Sheila, in 1917 and a son Cecil Frank (called Bobby) in 1919.
Ruth Gorringe (nee Mills) died when Bobby was quite young and I don't know when or how. Frank's younger brother, Lloyd Septimus and his wife took Bobby and brought him up in Queensland. He never married. The three girls remained in Tasmania with their uncles Thomas and James, living at Fernleigh, Kempton. Sadly, the twins became so mentally unstable that they were put in an institution for care. Audrey married Owen Goodwin of Kempton and had one son, Grant. Grant married Edyth Langham and they have one daughter Vanessa.
Hope this info is of interest.
Judith Bowler

You are on the right track. This Caroline never married. Hannah and Caroline lived together in Croydon until their deaths. Now that is another problem! Finding the death of Caroline has been a nightmare. According to Electoral registrations, Caroline could still have been alive in 1914, making her 90 years old!

If you can find anything on Caroline's death it would be brilliant. Hannah died July 1913 in Croydon.

Did you receive the email with my new address?

Carol

Melissa: Francis Goring was my great, great grandfather. He was born in England and came to Canada, Niagara region, in 1775. He changed the spelling of his name from Gorringe to Goring when he came to Canada. He died in 1841. Some of his writings are in the archives and with The Niagara Historical Society. My mother would have been his greet grandaughter. Mom's granddad was born in Welland County and he married a Cudney. They moved to the Norfolk region in the mid 1800's. I have further info. Should you wish same you might wish to go to the family tree 'We are One'
