Hi Linda,
My husband Saul called your uncle Larry this past weekend to ask if he was up to date on any family history since I needed some info. I have literally emailed everyone I know in the family to ask for info and I got ZIP!
He was told by your uncle, that you were also looking into the Cohen/Plotkin history. Larry and your mother Arlene are cousins to my husband, Saul Davis. Saul is a son of Rose (Blondie) Cohen Davis. They share the same grandparents Rachel Plotkin & Abraham Cohen. I don't have info on Deborah, however, I do have an email contact for another cousin, Michael Bevacqua and he may know. His email address is: mdbcorp@aol.com.
I wondered where Deborah got the info that the Cohen/Plotkins came from Poland. Everything I have, including the 1940 U.S. census shows they both came from Russia. We actually believed they came from Odessa in the Ukraine which was part of Russia when they emigrated in 1890. Also I believe Abraham Cohen was born in 1874 and died during Hanukkah in 1930 at age 56 since I believe his birthday was before April 4 of that year. Rachel remarried to Hax Moskowitz later. No dates. I also believe Rachel had a brother Ike besides the sisters that Deborah mentioned.
The name Plotkin could come from the town of Plotki which is in Belarus and is just north of Ukraine.
The history before the time they emigrated in 1890 was horrendous and it is easily understandable why they would leave.
Also, I believe Rachel's parents were Louis Plotkin who was married to Chaya but I don't have anything else on them.
If you have any info, I would love it.
If you need to reach me, I would prefer you just email me at ducanam3@verizon.net. since I just fell into this site totally by accident. I may never find it again.
So glad someone else is interested in family history.
Another cousin,
Martje Davis

She had a sister Daisy Bevacqua that lived in a nursing home in New Jersey. I spoke with Daisy on the phone in the late 80's when I was starting ancestor research.

My father told me that at the break out of war and the Nazis becoming more powerful the Danish barers of the name Gottlieb was changed to Gottliebsen in an attempt to avoid prosecution. (the name Gottlieb is a typical jewish name).
Hope this helps. Good luck with your research and feel free to mail me.
All the best, Maggi

There are - as far as I can ascertain - only two Gottlieb families in Denmark. If he came from Denmark he must belong to either of them.

A bit more details would be appreciated, e.g. date and place of birth

You might try to find him here http://nober.dk/PHP-USA/search.php. og at www.521.dk.

You can reach me by email at jenshansen@libertas.dk

His parents are William Gottlieb and Sophie Jensen. I would be interested to know if we are part of the Gottlieb surname in Denmark. Thank you!
Beth

My husband, Max Shertz, had relatives named Gottlieb - who lived in New York - I have to look at my genealogy chart because there were two Max Gottlieb - however, don't know of anyone named Gottlieb who was young enough to fight in WWII - the Gottliebs in my husband's family came originally from St. Petersburgh - Max (Moishe) was a cassical musician who taught the Tzar's children (because he spoke German) - he also formed the youngest classical ensemble with his children and toured Europe and New York - does your grandpa have any connection with my husband's Gottlieb family? My husband (who passed away) was jewish and of course, the Gottliebs were Jewish. Let me know - I just by accident looked at your post.

Mary Gottlieb of Chicago, IL

I am a descendant of Mary Gottlieb who lived in Chicago, IL. Mary was born in either Germany or Canada (of German descent) on 16 Sep 1841. Mary was first married to a Civil War veteran Michael J. Steffens in 1865 and became a widow sometime between 1875 and 1880. With Michael, she had 5 children (James Peter, Frank, Mary, Anna and Josephine Steffens). As a widow, she was then married a second time to Jacob Scheidt on 22 Nov 1881, and gave birth to a daughter, Elizabeth Scheidt in 1882. Mary died in Chicago on 18 Sep 1916 and is interred in Wunders Cemetery, Chicago. Does anyone have any information on this Mary Gottlieb, her place of birth and the family she was born to? Thanks!

Hello H Crown,
I have checked through all of my research and found no reference to Mina or Maurice Gottlieb. Strangely I cannot find any reference on ancestry.co.uk or findmypast.com. There is something about Maurycy Gottlieb on Wikipedia (one of Isaac & Fanya Tigerman Gottlieb's eleven children. His brother, painter Leopold Gottlieb, was born five years after his death). Sorry I couldn't be more help. I've come to a dead end on my research since finding out that Lewis Gottlieb was born in Podgurez in Krakow. His name was obviously not Lewis Gottlieb as there is no record of him!!!!
Oh well.
Thanks
Nikki

Re: Gottlieb Family

Dear Dr Gottlieb,

I wonder if you might be able to help? I am trying to put together some information on my great grandmother Mina Gottlieb, who came from Galicia. She was a first cousin to the artist Maurice Gottlieb and arrived in England around the turn of the century from Vienna. I should be most grateful for any information you might have and can pass on the little information I have so far acquired. With kind regards H Crown

Gottliebs from (Kattowitz) Poland

I have been hired to find out more information on my cousin's husband's family. At this point, we do know that his grandparents were Adolph and Alfreda Gottlieb. His mother's name was Lena and I don't need more information on her. But, I do need information on her siblings-- Emanuel, Izzy, Bertha and Ernst. The family was later transported to Germany during the Holocaust.

Lena married Walter Tallert and had son Harry. (Harry is my cousin's husband)
