David and Grace Hay Graham Gow

Looking for descendants of David Gow and Grace Hay
Graham. David and Grace came from Scotland to the USA
in 1840 with their seven children, arriving in New York
in August of that year. Their children are: Cathrine
Gow b. abt. 1826, Jeannette Gow b. abt. 1828, John Gow b.
1829, Marjorie Gow b. abt. 1832, David Gow b. abt. 1834,
William Purves Gow, b. August 12, 1835, and Grace Gow
born abt. 1840. John married Marjorie Graham who was born
in Dundee Scotland. William Purves married Mary Ann Brown of
Scioto Co. Ohio. David and Grace died in Pennsylvania where
they settled in Allegheny Co. It is believed that most of the
children stayed in Pennsylvania also although they could have
gone most anywhere. Any information on these people would be
greatly appreciated.
Pam Gow
Sacramento, Ca.
pam@gows.net

Nathaniel Cameron Gow

Hi there
I am researching my husband's ancestry and in particular Nathaniel Cameron Gow born 7 Mar 1815 Canongate, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, UK died 1887 in New Zealand. He married Margaret Drummond in 1839 at Low Church,Paisley,Renfrew,Scotland. In all they had 8 children, Janet, Margaret, Isabella, John Drummond, Julia, Nathaniel, Jamima and Mary all of whom went to New Zealand. I have one unconfirmed source for his father being John Gow born 1790. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Amanda Gow

Hi Susan - Isabella Gow married David Dunnet in Brisbane after emigrating. They had one daughter Florence Catherine Dunnett 1890. Isabella died in 1911. Florence married her first cousin (born Wick Scotland) John Geddes Dunnett at Vulture Street, South Brisbane on 28/4/1915 and they had one son John (Jack) William Dunnett 23/03/1917. John William Dunnett married Evelyn Susan Mottershead in 1941 and they had John William Dunnett 1943 (my husband's father) and Raymond ? Dunnett 1947 (Unmarried). John William Dunnett married Lynette Estelle Harland on 30/04/66 and they had Geoffrey John Dunnett 1969 (my husband) and Megan Ann Dunnett 1970. Hope this helps with your research. Isabella Gow emigrated to Australia with her sister Mary and her husband John Fox Sharp and their childred. Isabella had an illegitimate child (John) who is listed as one of the sisters children on the ship manifest. This child was brought up by Mary and her husband as one of their own and as Isabella's nephew. I don't believe that John ever found out that Aunt Isabella was really his mother as Mary is listed on his death certificate as his mother. Isabella also had another son in Brisbane in 1876 who died at less than one before she married David Dunnett. Hope this info helps in your research. Please feel free to contact me traceydunnett@hotmail.com if you have any further questions. Kind regards, Tracey Dunnett

Marriage L. GOW or GOE to Annie Maud HIE from Ontario, Canada

I'm hoping against all odds someone researching the GOW - GOE family line that may have been in the Ontario, Canada area during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Seeking information about a Lyle GOW or GOE who may have married Annie Maude HIE - d/o James Isaac Hie and Mary Jane (Harris) Hie approximately between 1913-1918 time period in Northumberland County. Although no "official" record of their marriage has been found as of yet, a handwritten note in the Hie family Bible has under Misc. section that Annie was "Mrs. Lyle Goe". Annie died in 1918 and is buried in Baltimore United Church Cemetery in Hamilton Township. Her maiden name is on the headstone, which is another mystery, if she had been married.

One major brick wall needs to come tumbling down soon...can anyone out there help me?

Thanks!
Kem Hart-Baker

My great-uncle, John Gow, was one of the "home children" that was transported at age 13 from Glasgow to Halifax, arriving in July 1889, to work. I found the manifest of the ship, but would like to know the name of the sending and receiving home in Glasgow and Canada. I thought it might be Quarriers, but they have no record of a John Gow, although they do have records of his brother and sister (Joseph and Grace) staying at Quarriers in different years.

The following is taken from The Buchan Observer (Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland), dated Friday, February 11, 1870 and I have replicated it here in case it is of help or interest to anyone else. I have no known connection to the family.

“Deaths:
At New Pitsligo, on the 6th inst., Widow Murrison, aged 73 years. He was a fifer in the 42d Regiment, and deceased accompanied him through the Peninsular War, and also assisted among the wounded at the battle of Waterloo. Murrison, pensioner, whom she outlived by a number of years.”

(My Notes:

There is a note of a marriage record on the IGI for a William Murison marrying a Elizabeth Shirras on 1 February 1846, Tyrie, Aberdeenshire. I was unable to find a marriage for Neil (or Niel) Gow and Elizabeth Shirras or Sheriff.

The death details for Elisabeth are:

1870 Deaths in the District of New Pitsligo in the County of Aberdeen

No. 6; Elisabeth Murison, Pauper, widow of William Murison, Chelsea Pensioner, died 1870, February Sixth at 4h am at Low Street, New Pitsligo, Tyrie, female, age 78 years.

My great grandfather, Daniel Gow, was born in Blair Athol in about 1846. His father is named as John Gow and his mother was Christian Paton Fraser, daughter of Charles Fraser, also born in Blair Atholl. I have found no record of marriage for John and Christian and it appears that Daniel was brought up by his grandparents in Aberfeldy. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated as I haven't been able to take the Gow line past John.

Alexander Gow and wife Elisabeth Buchnanan were living on Kirklane (The Moss), Kincardine, Pershire, Scotland in 1814 with 7 children (Walter, Janet, John, Duncan, JAMES, Ann, and Elizabeth).

Walter (1794 Scotland-1852 OH, married Agnes McGregor & Ellen Van Kirk), Duncan (b. 1799 d. aft 1860, no children found) and Janet (b. 1793 d. 1860-1870 PA, married David Gardner) left Scotland with their families and settled in Beaver Co., Pennsylvania.

John is last confirmed in Kincardine in 1841.

JAMES (my 3rd great grandfather) married Christian Ferguson in 1831 and soon thereafter left for Ontario, Canada. They may have had as many as 7 children.

Ann married Duncan McIntyre, had 3 known children, and was last found in Kincardine in 1861.

Elizabeth likely married John McCloud, had 6 known children, and is last found in Drummond, Lanark Co., Ontario, Canada in 1852.

I'd love to hear from anyone who may be connected to this family.

Drop me a mail and I'll send you back what I've got. I'm on adrian_bruce at bigfoot dot com (usual translation on 'at' and 'dot')
I too can't find anything on William Gow's origins - I also can't find anything in the OPRs on Niel Gow the famous fiddler who comes from the same area to see if we're related! (I reckon Niel Gow would be the generation before William)

Adrian
