Have you turned up any useful info on your grandfather's origins? My husband's grandfather was born in Wanlockhead, Dumfriesshire, the lead-mining village. When the lead-mining industry started to fail, many men went into other forms of mining and in his case, briefly coal (at least one of his children was born in Blantyre) before becoming the manager of a shale mine in West Lothian.
Interestingly, he had a brother William, born in Wanlockhead in 1857 where he also died in 1910.
Scotland's People - if you haven't already discovered them - has all the BMD and Census records and the Wanlockhead Museum of Lead Mining would be an interesting website to contact.
Good luck!
From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper:

Saturday, April 20, 1912:

• "The nearest Mobile comes to having a Mobile passenger on the ill-fated Titanic's maiden and last trip, is Colonel Archibald Gracie of New York, who is among those rescued. Colonel Gracie was born in Mobile. His father, of the same name, was in business here before the war and commanded the company that seized Mt. Vernon arsenal, the first act of war in the great contest between the North and the South; and was afterwards conspicuous as a brigade commander at Chicamaugua, Bean's Station and Drewry's Bluff; and was killed while inspecting the enemy's lines in front of Petersburg, December 2, 1864."

Not my line, just sharing.

I know this is rather late but... My great-grandfather was John Gracey, son of Crumwell Gracey and Isabella Mulholland (Carton). Was she a widow?
Just to clarify something Bernie said. Daniel Hurley was the father of Ellen Hurley who married John Gracey. (Gracey was Ellen's married name.)

Ellen Hurley-Gracey is my great grandmother and her father, Daniel is my great-great grandfather. I also live in Australia.
Hi,
Ida Gracie Mackinnon was my Aunt. Her father was Benjamin Gracie and her mother was Elizabeth Jane Devoe. There are about 18-20 children in this family. The last surviving member of the family Stanley died just last week. Mary was the oldest, Hubert, Gladys Rachel, Helen, Adell, Mary Hazel, Charles, Joseph, Harold, Vincent, William, Carlotta(twin of Adell) Simon Earl,James, Joseph Theodroe. This is just off the top of my head. Ida married Joseph B Mackinnon and adopted 3 children all living in the USA. I have there names and last known state they lived in. One of the children that they adopted was Vincent's daughter whos wife died shortly after giving birth and he was unable to care for the young baby. Her name was Elizabeth (Betty). Hope this helps you and please contact me if you have any more questions. I have a family portrait with their parents on I believe 40th anniversary. Not all the children are in the picture. My name is Marie (Richard) Nickerson and you can contact me ladycavalier_@hotmail.com Hope this helps you

Hi Gary, thanks so much for making contact. You are on my list of people to visit when I make it over to the SW/WA. I knew that you caught up with my sister Kerry a few years ago and shared the family tree information. Did you know that I used to go with Grandma to Hollywood Hospital to visit Uncle Andrew...I can picture his face so clearly. That would have have been in the mid/late 60's I think. (I'm a 1956 model!) I was very fond of Uncle Andrew. I've had an email from Denise in Scotland and am just getting some photos organised to send. I hear your travelling to the UK in June. My husband & I have plans to go to the UK sooner than later. I've taken your mobile number and I'll definately give you a call. I'll tell you about our other relatives who we caught up with at Jean's funeral when I talk to you. This really is such a hoot! Best wishes to you and the Gracie clan....Gayle

Hi, I'm not sure who I have tapped into as I just randomly Googled Gracie and Mt Barker, however reading the message about my grandmother's family is certainly what I was hoping to make a connection with. I can shed some light on "Aunty Chrissie"Christina Grace, my grandma "Nettie" (Janet Wilson Gracie), Nellie. I have some great photos also. I'm aware that Uncle Andrew's family inMt Barker have been tracking the Gracie tree for many years and I'd love to get some information. Best Wishes Gayle Mills

The person I know the most about is Crumwell and Isabella’s daughter Catherine (Kate) Gracey. My grandmother (Her granddaughter Maureen Iris Cuskelly) gave me an old family tree. She had twelve children with Joseph Fenton and I’ve uploaded a (sadly bad quality) photo of them all. Kate ran a store in Cooyar while Joe had a blacksmith’s shop. There is a memorial to Joe and Kate in the Rural Youth Park in Cooyar. I can type up all the info in the tree I’ve got if you like – there are several paragraphs about the lives of Joe and Kate. My grandmother is still alive and remembers Kate Gracey quite well though not very fondly! Oh, and my grandmother also had twins.

Bryce Gracie was born on the 6th of JUNE 1837 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright. Scotland. Elizabeth Carter was born on the 3rd of MAY 1838 in Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. After the birth of Agnes in 1857 they were married on the 11th of June 1858 in Troqueer. This is not to be confused with Traquair near Peebles.
The children of Bryce Gracie and Elizabeth Carter were:
1857 Agnes
1859 John
1861 Isabella [the Aitkin line]
1863 Alexander
1865 Elizabeth
1867 Mary
1869 Bryce
All the above children were born in Troqueer, Kirkcudbrightshire.
Then the family moved to Maxwelltown, Kirkcudbrightshire, where in:
1871 William James Gracie was born.
Then, following a move to Hawick, there were two more children:
1873 Janet
1880 Margaret.
Yes I did know of an Earl Gracie in Sydney Mines. He operated heavy equipment (backhoes etc.) Well liked Gent. I think he died maybe a year or two ago. There are still other Gracies here in the area. We are a small community.
Hope this is of some help to you for your search.

I do research on the missing men from the 319th Glider Field Artillery Battalion, who probably died together with S/Sgt Albert Roberts: Capt. John Doherty, Pvt Raymond Lane, Pvt. Clifford Mills and Pvt. William Hedtke. Probably all were killed when four gliders were hit by AA fire and crashed on 18 September 1944 near Zyfflich, a small German town near the Dutch border, between Nijmegen and Kleve.
I am very interested to receive the casualty report of S/Sgt. Albert Roberts.

I am a Dutch historian who helps American families to find more information about relatives who were missing in action in Holland during WW II. Four men from Gracie's unit, the 319th GFAB, were MIA at the same place were he was killed, the little town of Zyfflich, near he Dutch-German border, on 18 September 1944.
The casualty report of Lt. Gracie can give very valuable information to me about what happened to the missing men who were with him that day: Capt. Doherty and the Pvt's Lane, Mills and Hedtke.
Further I would like to come ino contact with Lt. Gracie's family.

Hi

Crumwell or Cromwell is my great great great grandfather. Does anyone know what happend to him? His son John my gg grandfather moved to AUstralia in the 1860's. Slowly putting together the pieces on this end but would dearly love to know what happend to Cromwell, and his wife.

Qld BDM shows Johns death certificate
Father Crum Mother Isabella CARLIN
However his sister Death Certificate shows
Father Cromwell Gracey Mother Isabella CARTIN
Also I have seen docs that suggest Isabellas name was Isabella Mulholland. Very Confusing.

Also the Gracey's donated land to the .catholic church at Cooyar Queensland. I believe the church St Malachys is named after the sister who was at All Hallows Brisbane. I have not been able to find any info on her either.

Help me Find CRUM/CROMWELL Please.

Thanks
Just Another Gracey

Stuart, taking up the story further for you if you do acquire details of the 1911 census which suggests that in Islington hopefully at 4 Alwyne Place, London N1, there is hopefully one an entry for this address with
William Gracie b1865 living with Ellen Annie F Gracie who could be your aunt
there are probably two children
Doris Gracie b 1904
John Francis Valentine Gracie, [believed born on 13 February] 1908.I couldn’t find other notices for this birth.
The occupation of William Gracie should help enormously working further back.
It occurs to me that the F in your aunts name could be Frances, so interesting with with your father’s 2nd first name.

Starting to look for earlier relevant Gracie records
Just checking for Doris in FREE BMDS there are 2 possibles
Gracie Doris Frances W. Derby 8b 613 Births in quarter year ending Dec 1898 but that means the 1911 age would be wrong, but a W Derby Gracey turns up again below. Much more likely by date is
Gracie Doris Eleanor E Alverstoke 2b 566 Births in quarter year ending Mar 1904 but Alverstoke is in the county of Hampshire. If it is her it means you dad is travelling
moving to John your father’s birthplace no entry found in FreeBMD’s or on familysearch.com

In the 1901 census you could look up
Ellen A Gracie 36 London London Camberwell, and age wise, this could be you aunt.
from freeBMDs a promising lead might be Ellen Gracie Birth: 02 Mar 1864 Christening: 30 Mar 1864 Saint Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England Parents: Father: William Gracie Family Mother: Ellen
looking for William in Free BMD's produces
Births in quarter year Sep 1865 Gracie, William McGeorge W. Derby 8b 397
nothing found under marriages

In the 1901 census William Gracie 35 Scotland Manchester Sth Manchester Traveller Draper if his wife was born Valentine that might fit.

I think its time to stop speculating, my aim is to encourage you backwards as far as is possible.
all census are copyrighted, so any extracts further would nee to be cleared other than for your personal use.
Good luck, Jim
I have delayed answering your query thinking I would get a breakthrough. I have searched many clues for 4 Alwyne Place, London N1 without success so far. Over the years I have made large indexes of Gracie from Rootsweb etc
back in 2002 Ralph Gracie was exploring the NZ Gracie
http://www.genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?valen... and there is a Valentine surname connection. But it doesn’t seem
in 2003 I was also noting on Genforum ‘In August 1969 the Portadown papers sought the missing heirs of the millions of a Valentine Harrison estate with the Gracey surname involved, however it appears unsupported in London Court Funds. If it existed in New Zealand court funds, I’m sure we would have heard about it.)’
I don’t have access to London Street directories
I finally this am I got onto http://www.1911census.co.uk/ and the breakthrough happens I think
The 1911 census suggests that in Islington
William Gracie b1865 is married to Ellen Annie F Gracey
they have two children
Doris b 1904
William b1908
you can pay to look up details on Findmypast
I am a decendant of Crumwell Gracey. I live in Australia. My great great grandmother Ellen Gracey married Daniel Hurley. I am keen to hear from other decendants of Crumwells. I will be visiting Northern Ireland late July, and would like to know where Crumwell is buried.

Regards
Bernie

Brian, Thank you for your reply! I wanted to contact Carolynn as we are related. Are your Gracie's in Scotland related in anyway with Carolynn's family? Can you tell me what part of the world Carolynn was from? I've been leaving messages on the message boards to try and contact her. Here's Hoping!!! Once again, thank you for your time.
Hi Allan:

No I have not heard from Carolynne Guy. We used to email each other and in the last year the email I sent her bounced. I recently found some new information on my Gracie line and wanted to share it with her.

Brian Martin
Calgary, Canada
