Re: Hans Graff of Rafz, Zurich, Switzerland

Sarah,

Thanks for your post!

I discovered that my Hans Graf didn't come from Rafz, but Bäretswil. There is speculation that these are merely two branches of a larger 'Swiss' Family. Fortunately I was able to trace my ancestry back to Italy as my father and grandfather's oral history claimed.

A 'cousin' family to the Swiss Graffs, the de Graeffs of Amsterdam, claimed to be descendants of a Pieter Graeff, who was the son of a Wolfgang de Gröben from Graz,Austria who migrated to the Rheinland. His wife was a Maria von Northein, and she must've been an heiress to the Northein family estate or something to that effect. Her family was primarily located in Frisia. Wolfgang's ancestral family, the de Gröben is known in Austria as von Graben, namesake of the Schloss Alt-Grabenhofen in Graz(now destroyed?) and the Graben Castle in Slovenia, Novo Mesto. Sometime between the 1150s and the 1270s, several Orsini family members were recorded to have moved to Croatia/Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia. A branch of the family, Orsini und Rosenberg, the 'remaining' branch in Austria, held a castle near a place called 'Velden' in Austria. I'm intrigued because Hans who arrived in the Americas was said to have held the title Freiherren von 'Welden'. I'm not sure if there is possible ambiguity between Welden, Velden, and Weldon(another alternative spelling).

Onto the religious aspect, the von Graben family seems to be very close to the Arnoldite(Brescia/Lombardy) movement, and the Hutterites. They were probably geographically within range of a large group of Mennonites as well. These families probably migrated westward, as these religious groups mostly originated in central/Alpine and Eastern Europe.

From what I can ascertain, my line(descended from Hans Güzel Graf), belongs to y-DNA Haplogroup E-V13, commonly found in the Central-East Mediterranean in the Balkans and the Italian peninsula. It's loosely considered to be a Greek and Roman marker, however it doesn't necessarily indicate ancestry leading back to Rome or Greece obviously, E-V13 was already spread throughout Europe before those civilizations.

I might add an interesting fact. Güzel, as in Hans 'Güzel' Graf, means beautiful in Turkish. During the 1400s, there must have been interaction with the Ottomans, and Hans migrated westward.

I hope this information helps somewhat. I'm still not clear on how my family theoretically connets to Italy, however a Vitello Orsini(son of Napoleone, Senator and Conti di Taglicozzo[??]) is said to have left Rome and settled in and married the daughter of the Count of Gorizia. I can post the specific information I found at a later date. I'm sure it would be most appreciated!

Best Regards!

According to the genealogy records that I have, Hans Heinrich Graff (b.1661, m.1693/4, d.29 June 1740) never left Rafz. My records go back to his grandfather, Hans Conrad Graff (b.1594) in Rafz. His Grandaughter, Barbara (b.1729 Rafz, d.unknown, Mt. Joy PA) was the generation who came to America.
She married Johann Heinrich (Henry) Ginter (Sp?) in 1753 at the Lutheran Church in Lancaster, but Henry is buried in a Mennonite graveyard.
Rafz is right on the German border and nearby Schaffhausen was a hotbed of Anabaptist beliefs. I have a lot of ancestors in both places, so I'm trying to research the religious history. If the official history was Roman Catholic, then Lutherans and Mennonites would have been in the same boat.

Hi John,

My name is Kurt Graff, and I am researching my geneology for my grand-daughters. In your Groff book, would it cover the area around Saarbrucken? My paternal grandfather's name was Walter Graff and my father's name was Friedrich Kurt Graff. My father was born in Elversberg in 1929, so I would think that Walter would have been from that area in the late 1890's. Any help you may be able to give would be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Kurt

He went first to Pennslyvania then moved to Virginia and finally died in Tennessee. Not sure who he married but he had several children. Does any of this sound familiar?

Hello. Just looking never before. My Grandfather Mack (Max) Graff emigrated from the Odessa are as a baby around 1903 to the lower Eastside of NY with parents and sisters. Only story I know is that he was a baby when they had to hide in a cellar, and in order not to be found, my his mother had to stuff a rag in his moth when he cried until he turned blue, so they would not e heard and found. They managed to escape. He went into the garment business in NYC and married my Grandmother Bertha Shapiro. I know he had sisters , I believe one was called Adel (spelling?) and I believed she or her sister had moved to Virgina years ago. I do not know much, but I would be interested to learn what you have learned if you would like to share.

Thank you,
Doug

Tophield and Emily Graff were my great-great grandparents. I would love to see this as I have no family pictures beyond one of my grandfather as a child. I know another family researcher that would love to see this too. I know of no connection to the Utters, Custers or Bowlwares.

That may be the Hans, I don't know though. We're Catholic, not Mennonite though my sister's husband's family(Graber) is Mennonite, but there maybe a few of them in my direct line. I've been trying to find out more about the family in Switzerland. My aunt and father has us(my family; paternal line) theoretically going back to the Graff(igna) family in Genoa and Gravina(-Orsini?) of Rome and Sicily. Another relative said she believed our origins were from Germany in the Rheinland area(connection to the op den Graffs?). If I can get more details of the family in Switzerland, maybe that will lead me further to their recorded country of origin. Unfortunately I can't seem to find much. I've gone as far back as Ulli Graf(1457), son of Hans Jakob Graf(1457). Anyhow, I'll keep my eyes peeled for info.

Cheers,
Isaac Marchant-de Gordoun Grove

Hi!

I'm really new to this stuff, so do forgive me if I'm looking in the wrong nooks and cranies! I'm looking for any information about Hans Graff's ship he traveled on from(specifically the name of the ship and the port of departure). He was born in 1661, in Rafz, located near Zurich, Switzerland. He may have had family who lived in Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany. I already know that he arrived(like many Germanics) into the Americas via Philadelphia. He was the one associated with Earl Township, Lancaster Co, PA. If anyone can provide any information about this man, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Cheers,
Isaac

Hi I'm look for information on William Arthur Graff. I believe he was born in 1883 in New York. I'm not sure if they were married but he had children with Elaine or Ella Marie Blodgett and I can't find any info on her either other than a few census documents which confirms they lived together and had children together. They're children's name's were William Arthur JR., Blodgett Eastman, and Paul. Paul was born much later I believe William was around 70 when Paul was born so Paul's info ins't on most of the documents. But he was born 24 January 1937 and died September 8th 1980.
