Since posting the original message on John & Ann Eliza I have found that their daughter Sarah Catherine 'KAte' Wells' death certificate (my GGGrandmother), indicates that Ann Eliza's maiden name was Wheeler. Also, after Ann Eliza died John remarried widow Jane Robinson, on his and Jane's marriage record it lists his parents as John Greatsinger Sr. and Lea Litts.

That said, I think it is interesting that you have the maiden names of Wagner and VanWagner for Ann Eliza (yes I have several spellings for her first name as well - not sure which is correct).

I would love to exchange info - please contact me directly at cec_b@yahoo.com - thanks!

I too am researching my Greatsinger ancestors and have traced it back to John & Ann Eliza but have hit a wall. John & Eliza's son Isaiah is my great-great grandfather.

*Isaiah married Amelia Bailey (Baily) from Connecticut and had 3 sons, Clyde, William Lysle and Charles Fred.
*Their son William Lysle married Grace Evelyn Babcock in 1906 and had 5 children: Jerold, Benjamin Daniel, David, Mary & Don L.
*Their son Don L. married Elsie Nordback and had 4 children: Robert, Barbara, Roger, and Alan.
*Robert is my father.

While searching I have found multiple spellings for Ann Eliza's first name: Anna Liza, Aneliza, Anna Eliza, etc. as well as two spellings of a possible maiden name, Wagner, and Vanwagner.

Curious if anyone has been able to trace this line back farther than John & Eliza or has any additional information!

There are a great many Greatsingers in the Ulster county, NY area, and also in Chemung Co, NY. My first Greatsinger ancestor is Susan A. Greatsinger, b 1820 in NY, d. in Fulton, Rock Co, WI. She married Silas Catlin in Rock Co, WI, so, you see, we ARE from the same family.

Susan's dad was William Greatsinger, b. 1788 in Ulster Co, NY, d. 1887 Elmira, Chemung, NY. His dad was probably Christian Greatsinger b. 1730 in Germany, d. 1805 Ulster Co, NY. The original surname in Germany was probably Groetzinger.

Google the Greatsinger Cemetery, Elmira,Chemung Co, NY. There's some interesting stuff there.

The first Groetzinger/Greatsinger immigrant from Germany may have been Stephen Groetzinger. There are also lots of guys named Christian Greatsinger.

I'll keep digging, get back at ya.

Good job there, Cec. I see you've hooked up with Eileen, too. FYI, my line from Susan A. Greatsinger is as follows:

1 Susan A. Greatsinger m Silas Catlin
2 Mary Catlin m George W Goodrich
3 Ida E Goodrich m Mark Gorsline
4 Mary Leone Gorsline m Jesse Becker
5 Fredric Becker m Norma Ruth Clark
6 Christopher J Becker (me.)

Incidentally, Susan's mom was Phoebe Spencer who m William Greatsinger. Phoebe (or Phebe) was born in England in 1793 or around there (confirmed by one of the censuses.)

There's apparently an old family tradition that British-born Phoebe Spencer was the disinherited daughter of George Spencer-Churchill, the Fifth Duke of Marlborough (George was the first in the line to use the hyphenated Spencer-Churchill name, to honor a famous grandparent John Churchill. George had to petition parliament to get permission to use the Churchill name. He was born just plain George Spencer. Of course, Phoebe being the daughter of the Duke is impossible to prove, but this is apparently what she claimed.

Chris,

Thanks for your reply! I had found some postings, posted by a researcher from your direct line, she said that Susan A. Greatsinger had remarried a George Gage (in 1869) and that she and Silas divorced (in 1868).

I can't find Susan on the 1860 or 1870 census. I think I have found her on 1880 (as a Gage - married - but living with only a daughter and granddaughter). And I did find a Susan Gage on the 1900c that I believe maybe her - if the info on her marriage to George Gage is correct.

Per that same researcher, Susan died in Luzerne Co., PA in 1904.

Yes, I do believe we are connected - I THINK - no proof - that we are connected thru Christian. I believe that my John (husband of Ann Eliza) had a father named John (husband of Lea Litt). The elder John's father was Christian - your William's father. I can't prove any of the two John's connections - but do believe them to be true.

I look forward to hearing more on your ideas and research,
Cec

John B. & Ann Eliza Greatsinger

I am researching my direct line Greatsinger ancestors. John B. & Ann Eliza are my oldest known of that line. They were both born in NY. He was born abt 1803; she was born abt 1813 (not sure of her maiden name). In 1840 they lived in Ulster Co., NY. By 1850 they had moved to Rock Co., WI. There they remained for the rest of their lives.

They had at least 7 children: John B. (prob. Benjamin) b. abt 1831; Sarah Catherine 'Kate' b. Apr 1834; Cornelius H. b. Mar 1835/37; Lydia b. Oct 1838; Daniel b. Nov 1844; Mary E. b. Feb 1847; and Isaiah b. Mar 1850.

Sarah Catherine 'Kate' married Stephen 'Nelson' Wells in abt 1855 (prob. in WI). they had at least 5 children: Stephen E. b. Sep 1858; Alvira B. b. Jan 1861?; Alma Charity b. Jul 1863; Daughter b. 1863 (maybe twin to Alma Charity); and Viola 'Nona B.' b. Jun 1871.

Their daughter Alma 'Charity' is my GGrandmother. She married Jerome Smith 'Rome' Barton.

Any help with taking this line further back or help with any side lines would be greatly appreciated. Would love to hear from anyone researching this line!!

Cec
