William Greaves born abt 1810 in Yorkshire

I am trying to trace William Greaves early life and family in UK. He was born abt 1810 in Yorkshire as noted on his death notice. He was convicted in York on 23 Oct 1833 and sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South Wales, Australia, and assigned to the Newcastle region where he lived out his life until 1875. He was buried in the Cathederal grounds. For most of his later life he was a storekeeper, with ties to Sheffield for iron monegery which he sold according to his advertisments.

The records in Australia are complete however no confirmed details exist prior to his conviction. Some leads exists and are posted in my published tree, as are much of the later information of his life.

He is my grgrgr grandfather. Regards David Greaves

Trying to trace Thomas Greaves b.1813 in Derbyshire.
wife: Mary Ann Salthouse b.1813 in Liverpool.
They married in Liverpool in 1833
They had 5 children >
Joseph b.1835
George b.1836
Thomas b. 1842
Elizabeth b. 1844
John Dale b. 1851 > my Great grandfather.
I know where and when he died, I know where he was buried, I know where he lived each decade from 1841 (except 1871, there is no trace of the family on the 1871 Census, Ancestry say they must have been"missed off"). He was a Warhouseman and then from the 1860s he was a Customs Officer but Nat Archives Customs records do not have him listed. His place of birth is not on his marriage cert or any of the children's birth or marriage certs.

>>> They are not the GREAVES family from CROMPTON <<<

Are you a connected to Thomas ? Where in Derbyshire was Thomas born? Can anyone help ?

My great grandmother's tree reaches as far back as about mid-1600s marriage of Humphrey Graves to a woman baptised in Norwich Norfolk. My family used Greaves also. At least three public family trees here at the Ancestry Website have relatives from the early 1800s and 1700s using Greeve, Graves and Greve on records in Norfolk. Family tree 83 connect in Kings Lynn Norfolk in the early 1600s by DNA match only (we are still searching for the final documented record proof). If you are a member of Ancestry then you may contact using their messaging between members apart from this forum (in order to avoid email spamming robots, etc...) .

Thank you, Ken. My family tree at Ancestry has been researched by me, not a Genealogist, including back from the earliest shown Graves from the DNA connected tree #428 as far as the early 1600s to a Humphrey Graves from Kirton in Holland (near Boston Lincolnshire England) married to a Norfolk connected woman including a baptism of a Samuel Graves child. That far back we lose the mother information on baptisms making it difficult to link a baptism to a marriage record. This is at a point in time that could jump geographically to King Lynn Norfolk at a time when the earliest shown ancestor on tree #83 was a Samuel Graves likely in Kings Lynn Norfolk. (Humphrey Graves has at least three possible Lincolnshire baptism records but I have not looked far into possible Norfolk baptisms.)

The Graves Family Association website at www.gravesfa.org has information on most Graves/Greaves/Grieve/etc. families in England, America, and elsewhere. The family from Lincolnshire that Mike (whalmi) referred to is for Samuel Graves (genealogy 83) on that site. You can see other possibly related families of Lincolnshire athttp://www.gravesfa.org/charts.html#Lynn.

Check out www.gravesfa.org as there is a family known to have left Kings Lynn Norfolk about 1620 or 1630 to start the town Lynn in America. Another Greaves and Graves family tree from Lincolnshire has a DNA match with that family. A Greeves and Graves family tree here at Ancestry has family from Lincolnshire in the 1800s leading back to around Lynn in Norfolk in the 1700s.

This is so interesting; my mother always said we were related to the Gibsons but never said in what way. Her mother died in childs birth when my mom was about 5; she said there were 2 younger sisters plus the baby. One of the sisters was raised by her father and I know them but no one ever told my mom where the other siblings were as her great aunts seperated the children. Do you know if there was a Matthew or Richard Greaves in your family? Everyone seemed to be called uncle this, aunt that or cousin so and so without any explanation how we were related, it was considered rude to question them.
Thanks for the reply!

Agatha was married to a Tom Bailey, but I do not have names of their children. Could this be your grandmother? Children born outside of a marriage would take their mother's maiden name.

I know it seems daunting not having all the info. We did not grow up amongst my mother's family due to a family rift. When I was about 12 I realized why,I can still feel my mother's great aunt's right index finger on my scalp punctuating each word she spoke, " don't be like your mother who let down the family so raise back up your color, besides you were considered rude to question the older folks about themselves.

Can anyone help me solve a family mystery?
James GREAVES born around 1836 in Birmingham, married Ann Maria Hipkiss in 1857. they had two children (Bertha Eliza Greaves b.1870 and Ernest Edward Greaves born 1874)From census records he appears to have been a tin plate worker, but the story in the family was that he was in the jewellry trade, that he went to Rio De Janeiro with a business partner and that someone was murdered ( we don't know if it was James or the partner!)
I do have a copy of a photo of James in Rio ( no date!)and I am pretty certain he is a relative because he looks very much like my Great Grandfather. James seems to disappear from any records after 1871 and by 1880 his wife is married to a William Peters. Does anyone know how a tinplate woker comes to be in Rio in the 1800s? or can anyone help me with this strange tale?
Many Thanks
jackie
