I am trying to find a link between my great great grandmother who was called Alice Greely born in London circa 1850. There was always a family myth that she was related to Horace Greely the American Publisher and politician.

If you have any further information, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Greeleys from Co Galway/Mayo to PA to MO

Greally is a local variant of Reilly found in Eastern Galway, Eastern Mayo, and Western Roscommon. There are maybe 20 households with that name in Ireland. I think we all got Anglicized to Greeley or Greely (me) when our ancestors came to North America.

I've got an Edward Greely who, by family legend, came from Galway during the Famine. He first appears in the 1850 census in the outskirts of Philadelphia as an illiterate farm laborer. He married Mary Griffen, a servant on the farm, and by 1854 they were farming in Perry County, Ohio. Other Greelys in Perry County at that time, who I'm guessing were relatives, include Owen, Martin, Ann, and Bridget. There seems to be no way to get useful information from Ireland. Those parts of western Ireland had almost no records pre-famine. The only idea I've ever had (though I've never done it except for one recent immigrant in NYC) is to contact the Irish Greallys and ask them if they have family history/legends of an Edward leaving for America during the Famine.

So we may be related - or we may not.

Greeleys from Co Galway/Mayo to PA to MO

Looking for family from Galway area prior to 1860, part of the family
emigrated about 1850, I am
looking for any ideas or possible connections to my GREELEY family. It
was spelled Greeley here in the US, but I don't know the original
spelling and would appreciate any help. Patrick Greeley was born about
1834 and married to Bridget NEVILLE, born Feb. 1835. They were from
County Galway and related to Father Andrew GREELEY and his family. They
came to New York sometime before 1854, where their son Thomas F.was
born. They moved to Reading and Scranton Pennsylvania, where four
children were born, Mary in 1857, James in Aug 1858, John P. in 1862,
and Ellen in July 1867. By 1880 the Greeleys moved to St. Louis,
Missouri. Related surnames are LAWLER, HARN, HAGGERTY, and NEVILLE.
gjmeier@earthlink.net
