Dearest Donalda, I had tears in my eyes when I read your post. I hope you are enjoying your retirement! How many times I have thought of you over the years and smiled at how you found and saved a piece of our family history!!!! I am working feverishly on getting the Sentell family history finished (which included my Aunt and Uncle Hilma and Fred Greenhalgh). Actually managed to trace back to 1306 (blood sweat and TEARS!!!!!!!!) and am now adding it onto Ancestry after downloading it on Genebase first (and had DNA tested...that was fun!!!!)...... Please let me know how you are doing!!!! Because TRULY!!!!!! Your random act of kindness has always stuck with me and I will NEVER forget you!!! kathryn

Hello Kathryn. I was reading your posts and gosh hard to believe it was so long ago. Hope you are getting all the info you could possible want. I left Vancouver a few months after I saw you, retired up to the Okanagan. I have spent most of retirement doing family history. :)
I have relayed the story of the marriage certificate many times and shown people the wonderful towels you and your Mom did and gave to me.
Hope all is well with you and your family,
Donalda

His parents were from England and I am guessing lived in NYC in the 1840s since that is when he was born. Any information would be helpful on the parents or any of his potential siblings. I found an Edward J son of Ellis & Ester Greenalch in 1870 census Jay Township, Elk County. Is James Edward one & the same as Edward J Greenalch? Any help would be appreciated.

I was interested to see your post as I had come across Henry Greenhalgh (grocer) while researching Pashlers (my maternal grandmother's family). Or rather I was aware of Henry Greenhalgh from his and Sarah's marriage certificate but had never been able to locate him on a census return. I have Sarah in 1841 in Duke Street, Marylebone with her brother and sister George and Jane, and then in 1851 in Nassau Street, Marylebone, with her brother John and family. But then the next time that I have found her is in 1881 in Alvington Crescent, Dalston, Hackney, widow, with children John, (Sarah) Jemima and Sarah Jane (although I have found Jemima in 1861 in Dorset).

I am quite prepared to believe that the Henry Greenhalgh you have found in 1841 in Henry Street, St. Pancras, is the same Henry, since the occupation and location fit. But I am curious about the other Henry Greenhalgh (aged 20) and Mary Greenhalgh (aged 22) who are on the next page of the 1841 census and appear to be in the same household. And I would really like to find out where Henry and Sarah are in 1861 and 1871.

Jane (?)- have you found any new information regarding your Greenhalgh family? I am interested in the background for your family, because some of them lived at St. Pancras, where my Greenhalgh's also lived. I would like to assume that if your Henry Greenhalgh was a surgeon, the family had money and some social standing.

My earliest ancestor is James Greenhalgh born about 1785, but I don't know where. Have no idea who his parents were or if he had siblings. He was a merchant living in London in the early 1800's. TWO of his sons became doctors also- one was Dr. Robert Greenhalgh who practised in London under Dr. William Jenner, and his brother Dr. James H. Greenhalgh practised in France, where he died. Their mother and James Greenhalgh senior's wife was Mary Ann Boyce born 1796, daughter of Robert Boyce and Mary Horton. The two doctor brothers had one sister Mary Sarah Greenhalgh born 1824 at St. Pancras, who is my 3X great grandmother.

Could there be a connection I wonder between our families?

Who were the seven children of Dr. Henry Greenhalgh and Mary Chester? I have Henry born March 5, 1807, William born about 1816/1817, David born about 1836 (does he later show up in London with 1807 Henry?), Sarah Ann born about 1823-1826...who were the other three children?

Who was 1807 Henry Greenhalgh's first wife and mother of his children? On the 1841 census he is living on Henry Street in Middlesex County age 33 years, a widower, and is also a widower in 1851, however I found two marriages for him:

April 26, 1844 at St. Pancras he married Jemima Good, daughter of John Good, his occupation was Grocer, his father's name was Henry Greenhalgh who was a Surgeon

April 22, 1851 he married Sarah PASHLER, daughter of Thomas Pashler, witness to this marriage was Sarah Ann Greenhalgh, most likely his sister (from the 1851 census at St. Pancras).

Hope to hear from you,

Thanks from Nora

The last census entry i have is the 1891 census when he resided in Wellington Rd. Heaton Norris. He married a Getrude Lomax in 1874. I believe he was the elder brother of my Gr.
Hi, I am researching the Greenhalgh family in Australia and am particularly interested in James GREENHALGH born 1823 Elton Manchester England. He died in Penrith NSW in 1866. Wifes name was Ann and they had 7 children. I don't know James' parents so maybe we are researching the same family.
James had a son Samuel born in Lancashire 1845 and his last child Joseph was born in 1859 Manchester so they must have migrated after that.
I have been researching my husband's Greenhalgh ancestors and have hit the "brick wall". To date, I have this information of which I am certain: Peter C. GREENHALGH b. 1826 Lancashire England d. 1918 California m. Hannah CROOK 1851 immigrated 1851. I suspect his parents may have been Robert GREENHALGH and Martha BOARDMAN, but I have had no luck finding any substantial record of him and/or his parents prior to his arrival in the US. If anyone could help me verify his parents and get back into the hunt, I'd truly appreciate it.

I have been to see Greenhalgh castle located outside of Garstang, Lancashire, England. It is a ruin set in what is now a sheep pasture! The farm house on the property is quite old and we were told by the farmer's wife that it contained the original stairway from the castle. The castle was ransacked by Cromwell - the Greenhalghs were Catholic. Some time ago, I bought a small book from a website about Greenhalgh castle. You might try that for a picture.
- J.

Based on the FAQs at the GRO website I expect that James Greenhalgh's death registration will show his age and place of birth, but not parents' names. We must hope the informant really knew his place of birth.

Also, I would not rule out getting some useful info from the parish register for the 1817 marriage at St Pancras. I mentioned the FHL film number in an earlier email, but you can also send off to the FHL requesting a copy of the registration. See the form at:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Search/Rg/images/FReqIGI.pdf

and use the section headed "Extracted Resources".

Also, finding James Greenhalgh in the National Burial Index (NBI) might show if others from an earlier Greenhalgh generation or his sons are buried near him.

http://www.ffhs.org.uk/projects/nbi/nbi-overview.php

----------------------
Text from GRO death reg FAQ at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-order-on...

QUOTE

The details contained on a death certificate include:

* Name, date and place of death.
* Date and place of birth (before 1969 a certificate only showed age of deceased).
* Occupation and usual address.
* Cause of death.
* The person who gave information for the death registration.

ENDQUOTE

Richard, I did find the information about Mary Ann's second marriage to her sister's widower in another copy of the Gentleman's Magazine online, I did not record the volume number but will retrieve that again...it read:

"At Duisburg, Prussia, William Holsworth esq. of Marlborough Place, Brighton, to Mary Ann, relict of the late James Greenhalgh, esq. of Charlotte Street, Fitzroy Square."

If I rem. correctly, Mary Ann was living at Charlotte Street in 1841 with her daughter my 3X great grandmother Mary Sarah Greenhalgh, and at Upper Norton Street in 1851. When she married William Holsworth, she moved to Brighton, Sussex and died there.

This second marriage for both William Holsworth and Mary Ann Boyce (widow of James Greenhalgh of Fitzroy Square) was on my old parchment pages but no date or place given.

I have sent away for the death reg. for my ancestor James Greenhalgh, in the vague hope there may be some tidbit of information on it that will give me a clue as to his identity. I also sent for his daughter's death certificate and her marriage certificate, perhaps there will be something on one of them. I know in my heart and soul there must be old papers and publications in England that could help me- I have xeroxed copies of some old documents which were in newspapers about Dr. Robert Greenhalgh, my third great granduncle.

If I do find something that will help me and help others, I will certainly post that information.

Nora

Hi Nora, A very interesting puzzle you have indeed! Your demonstrated research skills and dedication make it even more compelling to me.

The record you received from your grandmother is a treasure. My grandfather was a main inspiration for me in taking up family history. He handed down about 20 pages of descendant charts and so many stories.

I hope you'll post what you find when you receive James Greenhalgh's death registration. I've only ever ordered one document from the UK GRO but had good luck. My memory is that it only took 2 weeks or so. Not sure if that is normal.

Working in old parish records takes some study and perseverance. I know where the index volumes are on the shelf at the Family History Library in Salt Lake but cannot remember what they are called. GENUKI is an invaluable online resource. If James' death cert gives a birth place and parents names, I can help in identifying resources.

The St Pancras Parish records for the 1817 marriage might have some details but I don't want to get hopes up too high.

Did you find German records Mary's second marriage in Duisburg? I don't question it, just curious. My only German work has been in the IGI batch records (ones that cite to original church records).

My understanding is that there are at least twenty known spelling variants of Greenhalgh, and my surname (Greenough) is one of the more common of them (I could dig up a citation to general English surname study done about 1900 if you are interested). I trace back to a Robert Greenough of Ipswich and Rowley, Massachusetts (lived about 1650 to 1718). Some of his descendant lines in the US and Canada shortened the name to Greeno.

The first record of Robert Greenough is a land grant in Maine in 1680 on which his last name was spelled Greenhaugh which is another spelling variant of Greenhalgh. It is not known where in England he came from, but the surname was and still is heavily concentrated in Lancashire. In the late 16th/early 17th century church and probate records from Lancashire it's easy to find records for the same "nuclear family" with the name spelled several different ways. I guess it is was just a matter of chance which one they settled on as "correct spelling" became a need in the more literate and legalistic society that developed in the next century or two.

Richard, thank you for your reply, the links and your questions. I like to be challenged. I have worked on this family for eight years, via the internet, working backwards from my great grandmother who was born at Brighton, Sussex, and working straight off old parchment pages that were handed to me when I was in my 20's by my maternal grandmother who told me she wanted me to have them, if I would take care of them, work on genealogy one day and then pass them on to someone else in our family.

I had no idea the significance of what she handed me, carefully wrapped in plastic, until I did start working on family history in earnest.

I am positive of all the information I have posted because I have backed it (what is contained on the old parchment pages) up with information which corresponds to online records, although I have never sent away for anything to do with my elusive James Greenhalgh. Now that I have some idea where and what to send for, I will do that. I was just wondering yesterday if his marriage record to Mary Ann Boyce names his parents or father or even where he was born.

My old parchment pages state he was born 1785 but no exact date and his date of death was recorded as Oct. 12, 1850. The latter date corresponds with this item I found online, and which confirms for me that the Mary Greenhalgh living on her own in 1841 with daughter Mary (my 3 times great grandmother Mary Sarah) is same person as wife of same James because the address is the same (Upper Norton Street):

From my files....

Another item (found in the "Gentleman's Magazine" published in England): Deaths- London and Vicinity: Reported Oct. 13, 1850
In Upper Norton St. age 65, James Greenhalgh, esq. (His death was Oct. 12, 1850)

How bizarre this is however, I did not realize until yesterday that James was not recorded with Mary, and I started to wonder if they lived apart. Why otherwise would he not be listed as living with her? Was he away on a trip perhaps with his sons? Robert and James were born in 1819 and 1821 and well of an age to be living on their own but I cannot find them in 1841 in England. I do know this family travelled quite a bit, so it is hard to say where they were in 1841.

Mary re-married after James died....to William Holsworth or Holdsworth in 1852 in Dusiburg, Prussia (!) William's first wife was Mary Ann Boyce's sister: Sarah Frances Boyce born about 1791 and died in 1848. I cannot find them as a couple on the 1841 census either.

Because James was 32 years old when he married Mary Ann Boyce, perhaps he had been married previously. Again, I had not entertained this thought until yesterday.

I will do some more digging and see what I can find- it has always intrigued me that "my" James has never been linked to any of the more prominant Greenhalgh lines.

Thank you again for your help and if you ever find anything that might help me, please post here or write to me directly.

Was your family name always Greenough, or is there a link to some Greenhalgh lines?

Nora
Hi, I'm not related to this line but you have an interesting puzzle. Are you certain that the James Greenhalgh who died Oct 1850 is a match for Mary Ann (Boyce) Greenhalgh's husband? I find Mary Greenhalgh age 44 and daughter Mary Greenhalgh age 16 in the 1841 census at St. Pancras Registration District, without James or the two sons in the household.

Do have the 1850 death cert? If not, you may want to order from the GRO:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Is there a chance that the death cert is for the son James or a completely unrelated James Greenhalgh? It's a more commmon name than might expect.

Also, have you checked the parish register for the 1815 marriage to see if James Greenhalgh's parents are named (not sure if would expect them to be)? This is the Family History Library microfilm number I think the 1815 marriage record would be on:

FHL BRITISH Film [ 598180 ]
Marriages v. 57-58, 1811-1816 from Parish registers of St. Pancras Old Church, 1660-1916 (Microfilm of original records at the London Record Office and at the London Metropolitan Archives. London Metro. Archives call no.: P90/PAN2/001-005, 009-023).

James Greenhalgh in London, England

Does anyone have info on a James Greenhalgh who was born 1785, died Oct. 12, 1850 at Upper Norton Street in Marylebone? I THINK he was a merchant of some type. He married Mary Ann Boyce on Aug. 3, 1817 at Old Church, Saint Pancras. She was a sister to George John Boyce, father of painters George Price Boyce and Joanna Mary Boyce/Mrs. Henry Tamworth Wells.

James Greenhalgh and Mary Ann Boyce had three children- Robert and James who became doctors, and Mary Sarah who was my 3X great grandmother. Mary Sarah married Edward Hawxby Walker in 1844 and had six children, three of whom lived to adulthood.

I have never found one shred of information that tells me who the parents were for James Greenhalgh senior and I would love to know his background and ancestry. After his death his widow married William Holsworth (1792-1876). Mary Ann died in July 1868.

Thanks from Nora
