Hi again,

Out of curiousity, I just looked on-line and found an old posting of mine which mentioned your GREENLEAF / KIDDER couple. If you are Russell, we have corresponded before. If you are not, then someone else is researching that family.

I just saw that Isaac KIDDER and his family were in Townsend, MA, and they moved to Norridgewock, ME, where the rest of their children were born. And, Isaac came from the same ancestor as me, Thomas KIDDER, of Chelmsford and (almost) Westford, MA. He died suddenly the day that Westford was annexing off of Chelmsford. His widow was left with 5 young sons to raise, and then she remarried and had 2 more children. (I am descended from son, Joseph; one of his sons was the Calvin KIDDER I mentioned in my other posting.)

Just an FYI for you.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello,

I can't answer your questions. But, I'd like to say that I'm interested in both of the surnames mentioned. KIDDER is my main research of 20 yrs. My ancestor, Calvin KIDDER, b1765, NH, was in New Brunswick, Canada, in 1784.

I've corresponded with the researcher, George Kidder, in FL, for probably over 15 yrs. He has spent probably 20 yrs. trying to create an update for the 1941 book.

Calvin KIDDER was killed in a boating accident in Feb. 1799, one week after his only child was born. His son, J. Calvin KIDDER (1799-1891) moved over to Calais, ME, in 1830 and shortly after married Mary WILKINS and remained there. *

Just an FYI for you.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(I was a neighbor of a Mr. Leslie GREENLEAF in Billerica, MA, for many years.)

*
Sometimes my early-morning brain confuses the surnames GREENLEAF and GREENLAW. Calvin KIDDER, b1765 had married Mercy GREENLAW, and no one can find out who her parents were. Hmmmmm.. I wonder if people in 1790's along the Maine / New Brunswick border also confused the surnames.

Abraham Greenleaf, 1787-1818 of Starks, Somerset Co, ME

Abraham, the son of Joseph Greenleaf and Margaret Nason, was born on September 2, 1787 in Starks, Somerset County, Maine. Abraham is most likely one of the two sons of Joseph Greenleaf between the ages 16-25 in the 1810 census. In 1810, the Joseph Greenleaf family of Starks included 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 to 15, 2 males 16 to 25, 1 male over 45, 3 females under 10, and 1 female 26 to 44. Abraham was 23 in 1810. .
Abraham was married on January 17, 1811 in Norridgewock to Emma Kidder (Stafford, MT, A Gen. of the Kidder Family, 1941, pp. 80-1). Emma, the d/o Isaac Kidder & Susannah Sherwin, was born on April 19, 1791.
Emma died on July 1, 1816. Abraham died on January 15, 1818 at the age of 30 (Greenleaf, James Edmund, Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family, 1580-1890, Boston, 1896, p. 337-8).
Children:
Phebe, b. Mar 20, 1812, ME.
Luther, b. Mar 22, 1813, ME.
Emma, b. Jan 21, 1815, Starks, ME
I would like more details on this family. What cemetery were they buried in? Any property records. I have located an Abraham Greenleaf, a lieutenant in Capt G. Gray's Co, Lt. Col J. Waugh's Regt which was raised in Starks in Sep 1814. Can anyone verify that he was this Abraham Greenleaf?

Hello, I hope I don't confuse you more, but there is another Joseph and Hannah from Mass. with an entirely diff family tree according to dates.I wish I had your address and I would send this- I'm a terrible typist.I have 2 Nathaniel's. The one you spoke of was B.1752 in Mass. and D.1830 in Coventry, NY.I grew up near Greene,NY which is 20 mi. NE of Binghamton,NY and a few miles up the road from Coventry- this is the Badger side I've looked into. Anyway he was married to Mehitable Howard- her maiden name is Harwood. B.1758 in Mass. and D. in Coventry also in 1848, at 90 yr. old. Henry Badger B.1717 IN Conn was his dad and Henry's dad was Nathaniel Badger B.1675 in Mass and died in 1752 in Tolland, Conn- he was married to a Mary Lunt, B. in 1677 and had 12 kids- like I said I have 13 generations.Go under Nathaniel Badger 1752, under Public Member Trees and see Nathaniel Badger's Family Tree, the owner being- pstehm- it will give you the entire tree. Why he came to Coventry- I don't know, it's very small- and the lower 5 generations seemed to have stayed in that area. My info says Mehitable's parents were Peter Harwood, B.1727-1766 and Mary Webb, B.1727, AND d.1766(SAME DATES FOR EACH, MAYBE A MISTAKE) and his parents were John Harwood-no dates- and Hannah Aldrich B.1704 D.1794.Good luck-Hope it helps, Carolyn

N.B., it takes a few moments for a reply to show up on ancestry.com - do be patient.

Two questions; do the burial records give Mahitable's maiden name, and to which Coventry to you refer? Regarding the latter, England? or, perhaps, in one of the New England states?

I do apologize for not having given birth/death years in my top down listing but I did have the elder Nathiel with the correct wife, right?

It is the younger Nathaniel, i.e., my Amas Mason Badger's grandfather whose wife is in question. He wrote that her name was Howard but gave no first/given name.

I very much appreciate all of your help.

I was only looking at the Badger side. Nathaniel is mine and my husband's x5gr, grandfather. Confusing, I know, but true.
Thanks for your prompt reply Heather. Benjamin would have been my great great grandfather's brother. I remember accessing the 1851 census and finding my g.g.grandfather as being a servant to the vicar of Langham, Norfolk and Benjamin being an orphan child lodging with a Mary Crane in Burgh. It was so sad and affected me for days. I suppose we all hope to find 'gentry' in our ancestors.
I'm looking forward to looking through your 'trees' to see whether we have a close connection. I hope so!
Pam
Thanks Heather, I'm still putting findings together. Ellen Broome b.1896 was my grandmother, she being the daughter of Frank Broome b.1872 in Kings Norton, Birmingham and he son of John Broom b.1834 and he being son of John Broom b.1799. Looked at your Broom tree (very helpful). I found Ellen was b.1827;Ann b.1830;Francis b.1832 (all 3 christened on 21.10.1832) Sad family, Mary Bowman listed as being a widow and pauper 1841. Will now find the time to do my Broome tree and will look forward to comparing with your own.
Pamela

Sorry Pamela, none of this family is listed. John Broom was b.1799 in Burgh and was a brother of Robert b.1815, to whom the bible belonged. I believe it was a wedding present to Robert Broom & Charlotte Hadley (1838).

I have traced some of John and Mary Ann's family - perhaps you 'd like to look at my Broome family tree.
Hi Gloria:

I would like you to look-up my great great great grandmother Delphia Greenleaf born in 1790 in Africa. She arrived in the United States sometime between 1790-1812 because she had a son in 1813 according to the 1870 census. I found her on the 1870 Hamilton, Harris County, Georgia census. I want to find out how she obtained her last name (Surname). Any information you can find regarding her will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Valyncia

Hello - you mention Rebecca who married a Captain Thomas SMITH & they had a daughter named Charlotte Greenleaf SMITH B 12 Sep 1857. Charlotte married on 18 Oct 1846 in St Louis,,MO an Isaac TOMER B 1826 in NY D 1880.

In our Tomer family tree, Charlotte was b. 30 JUN 1829 in Salem, Maine and married Isaac Tomer Sr. in 1848, but I don't have definite documentation of those events. I am a descendant of John Cunningham Tomer, one of their eleven children. I would certainly appreciate any information that you might have gathered since 2004 regarding this family, especially if you have any information about Isaac Tomer's ancestry. Thank you.

And, in case you made a typo, Newbury is in Essex Co., MA.

http://www.newbury375.org/

http://www.townofnewbury.org/Pages/index

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbury,_Massachusetts

I only have an indirect connection. My ancestor in early 1600's Cambridge, MA, was Francis MOORE. And, his sister, Sara MOORE, married into the GREENLEAF family and lived in Newbury.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(I hope researchers don't mind my mentioning that I started up 2 new Message Boards a few months ago. They are to go along with my CAN-USA-Migration List.

In case anyone is interested:
Jessee Hubbard Noe Greenleaf was born Hannah Hubbard; she became a legal ward of Andrew Noe upon the death of her mother in 1889 and accompanied the Noe family when they moved from Umatilla, Oregon, to Humboldt County, California. She may never have known her birth information as she was very young when her mother and grandfather died. (She lived with her mother and grandfather until their deaths.) She was the younger daughter of Mary Salonah Peck Berry. The facts about her becoming a ward of Andrew Noe and his wife are on file in the State of Oregon Archives. She was the younger sister of my Great-Great-Grandmother.

Hello,

I was just looking to see if I could find a web site for the GREENLEAF family and found this web page. I don't know if researchers already know about it, but I thought I would offer it in case you don't.

http://www.renderplus.com/hartgen/htm/greenleaf.htm

It mentions Sarah MORE / MOORE but only mentions her.

I have the old 1968 article by Mrs. Boynton on my desk, and I can offer part of what it says:

"The author by chance saw in the Essex volumes of the Boyd Marriage Index an entry, "Moor Sar and Edm Greenleaf Langford," (Women's Volume, p. 33, copy in Salt Lake City). The time, 1611, was about right, the names are right and seemed to explain the Cousin Thomas Moor, the overseer of Edmund's will. To be absolutely sure Mr. Woodard was employed to look for proof. This he found in the will of Samuel More of the Parish of Much Totham, co. Essex, dated 24 Dec, 1615 and proved by his brother Francis More the 2nd of February following. A transcription of the will follows. ...."

Just an FYI for you.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(Francis MOORE / MOOR / MORE was my ancestor who arrived in ~1637 and settled in Cambridge, MA. There is a "MOORE book" which I recently looked at and it tells of the correct children of Francis (in the authors' opinion), which has been in question in past years. His (known) daughter, Anna MOORE, married my ancestor, James KIDDER, in Cambridge and had some of their children there. They had 12 children who grew up in Billerica, MA, from ~1655 on.)

(I believe that the Golden MORE (MOORE) also in Billerica was the younger half-brother of Francis in Cambridge. He was referred to as Anna's uncle.)

Lisa,
Cynthia Minerva Greenleaf Hardin Huskey is my paternal 3rd great grandmother. Judy Huskey (whose husband is also Cynthia's decendant) & I have been trying to puzzle her out. She is quite an enigma. My Pop said he remembered family talking about her in not very kind ways.
They said she was striking due to her dark hair and swarthy complexion. There was speculation that she might have been part Native American or maybe Melungeon. The difficulty in finding her family seems to add credence to this theory.
I know that there were other Greenleafs in the area; they were from ME & NY. If there is a connection to them, I haven't found it yet. Even her obit doesn't really shed much light on her background.
Barb

Do you have the name of the Moore book? I am planning a trip to the Maldon, England area this summer and hope to try and find info about the Moores; cemeteries, etc.
I can share what, if anything I find.
Edmund probably was in Newbury around 1635; in 1637 he "commanded a company which marched against the Indians" and in 1638 he was made a freeman of Newbury. So he was probably in Newbury well before 1638.

Re: Looking for Father of Peter Greenleaf (b 1782 Bergen New Jersey)

Hi Marty,

Alice Schenck uncovered facts and relationships that "bolster the possibility (but do not prove)that Robert and Elizabeth (Earle) Greenleaf were the parents of Peter."

You have the book, but for those that don't, the facts are below:

1. Military record states that Peter (1) was born in Bergen, New Jersey. Only one Greenleaf family is on the tax rolls in early years. [a scan of this record is attached]

2. A Peter Greenleaf is listed on the 1813 tax roll. His name is listed within a few lines of the other Greenleafs who lived in a cluster for several years.

3. When Peter (1) applied for a grant, two men signed an affidavit to identify him. One signer was a Silas Parvin. A Silas Parviw (Perwin) married a daughter of Robert Greenleaf. Was this Peter's brother-in-law? Edward R. Earle also signed. Was this a cousin, an uncle? There were many Earles in New Jersey at that time.

4. The New Jersey Tax Rolls carry the name of Garret Halenbeck as a neighbor of Robert Greenleaf. Was this Garret Halenbeck, Mary's father? Did Peter (1) marry a neighbor girl?

5. The genealogies state that a son of Robert Greenleaf, Cornelius, died in Canada. Legend relates that Peter (2) came to Illinois from Canada. Had he been living or visiting relatives in Canada?

At this late date, I think the only way to prove the relationship beyond any doubt would be DNA testing. Isn't there a Greenleaf DNA Project somewhere?

Rel@ively,
Patrice
(Married to a descendant of Peter)

I have an original "Peter and Mary Halenbeck Greenleaf of New Jersey and Sons Peter and Joseph of Illinois Also Kinfolk" (c) Schenck 1985, where Alice Schenck is unable to prove that Robert Greenleaf (b. 1740 or 1764) was the father of Peter Greenleaf. Does anyone know of this book, and can anyone prove that Robert is the father of Peter?
Marty Greenlief
Salt Lake City
greenlief1 at hotmail.com

Hello,

I'm looking at old postings about my ancestor, Francis MOORE, again this week. And, I was able to look at an important "MOORE book" yesterday. A summary of what I have been reminded of is that:

Francis and Catherine (MONFORD??) MOORE probably arrived in 1638. And there were only 4 ships arriving in the MA Bay Colony in 1638, the Bevis, the Confidence, the Martin, and the Susan & Ellen. And, I'm curious whether Edmund GREENLEAF was on one of those ships, also.

Also, the authors of the above book say that the 3 MOORE siblings who lived in Newbury, MA, near Mrs. Sara (MOORE) GREENLEAF were "not" children of Francis MOORE.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

Hello,

I'm thinking about my ancestor, Francis MOORE, again (after several years), and I'm finding more tidbits of information.

According to old postings on the Lists and Boards, Francis and Catherine (MONFORD??) MOORE arrived in the Colony in 1638. And there were only 4 known ships arriving in 1638, the Bevis, the Confidence, the Martin, and the Susan & Ellen.

I'm curious whether Edmund GREENLEAF was on one of those ships, and could he have traveled with Francis MOORE.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(I was able to look at an important "MOORE book" yesterday (which is now on-line), and the authors believe that the 3 MOORE siblings who lived in Newbury, MA, near Mrs. Sara (MOORE) GREENLEAF were "not" children of Francis MOORE. Francis and Catherine MOORE had 6 children, and they mostly remained living in Boston and Cambridge.)

Re: Sarah GREENLEAF, sister to Francis MOORE of 1630's Cambridge, MA???

Hello,

I really haven't done much research on my ancestor, Francis MOORE, in a few years, but I got thinking about him last week. While looking at old postings and responses, I was reminded of an important "MOORE book." I drove to a local library yesterday to look at it, but it was missing. The librarian looked and found the book at HeritageQuest. So, I came home and looked at it. It is a large, well-researched book, and Francis MOORE is discussed.

The authors offer 6 children for Francis and Catherine (?) MOORE, including Samuel, Francis, Jr., Thomas?, Sarah, John, and Ann. And they say they mostly remained in Boston and Cambridge. Others believe that Francis and Catherine had arrived in 1638 but no ship information is available. *

The book authors also say that the 3 MOORE siblings who lived in Newbury, MA, (near Mrs. Sara (MOORE) GREENLEAF, were "not" the children of Francis. These siblings moved to NJ.

There is a lot of information in the archives of the MOORE Boards and List, and I am posting a few more notes this week.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

*
I also looked on-line last night for old postings on the MA-Bay-Colony List and found .4. ships arriving in the Colony in 1638, the Bevis, the Confidence, the Martin, and the Susan & Ellen. So, Francis & Catherine MOORE should have been on one of them.

Has it been officially determined which ship Edmund GREENLEAF arrived on? And, was it 1638, also?

Re: Isaac Greenleaf Family in PA

I found the name Lydia Ann Deem on my family's version of the family tree also. Sorry, but the first thing I looked at was the wedding document that on lists Ann as her name.
My records say Lydia Ann was born on Dec 2, 1847 and was the 7th of 7 children. Her parents were Adam Deem (b. April 1 1813 d. Mar 5 1862)and Elizabeth (nee Moyer b. Sep 7 1813). Adam was an only child. I have DEEM record three generations back to at least 1746 if you want them.

I have Isaac's middle name as Brackbill. I don't know of a Brossman. I also discovered the 1850 census that lists Isaac's father Jacob B. Greenleaf (18 at the time) as a Blacksmith and his grandfather (also Jacob) as a Laborer.

According to my family records:

JACOB B. GREENLEAF
Jacob B. Greenleaf (Jr.) married Annes Stewart (b. Feb 23 1803, d. June 20 1871). These were Sadie (Sarah) and Isaac's parents. Annes' parents I have as John and Martha with no middle or maiden names.

JACOB GREENLEAF SR.
Jacob Sr was married Fronica (Frances) Brunner in 1792 Jacob Sr. and lived in Churchtown, PA (Lancaster Co.). It says he is buried at Salisbury Gap.

His parents were Martin Greenleaf (born in Germany) and a woman named Gribbs, but I her first and middle name are either crossed out or damaged on my copy. They had 9 children (two boys are listed as "a son"). Jacob was the 5th child.

Let me know if I'm giving you too much about the Greenleafs because you may not be that interested or if you are specifically interested in the Brunners, Gribbs, or more on the Deems.

In the meantime I'll check more of my records for photos, etc.

Thanks.

Kevin
