I forgot something else, too. My family story goes that James Greenway married Lowery sisters; Minnie and Betsy. I cannot find ANYTHING on a Minnie Lowery but I DO find an Easter Lowery married to him. Do you know what her name really was? Everything that comes to your mind is appreciated. Thanks
Oh, PLEASE do. Tell me EVERYTHING you know. I have found a little about the Loweries but don't know if it's correct. There is also a tree here on Ancestry that says the Greenway name was changed from Green(e) sometime in the mid-1700s. Do you know anything about this? You can email me if you like.
I hear ya about the time machine. I am sorry, I mis-spoke when I said William had a will, I was actually trying to refer to the orphans court document you referred to.

I do have the Book of Strattons, and it insinuates that Mary was the sister of William and George, but does not definitively state such. The idea that the three eldest children, William George and Hannah were given to the care of Ms Dungan when their mother was still alive is very interesting. I can definitely see how society, at that time would have handled things that way. And it was probably unlikely that Mary would have been able to economically support all her children alone. I ran into a similar situation for a different branch of my family, so I am not surprised by that, nor would I be surprised that the elder Mary kept her younger children (incl. younger Mary) at home with her. That would explain why she wasnt mentioned in the document.

We dont know who Seth's father is and I've spoken to other researchers who believe he was the son of Sarah Stratton out of wedlock.

Seems both Mary and Seth are very difficult!

Joe

My Greenway runs through William Greenway and Elizabeth Humphrey, so I don't have much on the Stratton family. However, I can give you two sources to check. There is a book titled: "A Book of Stratton's." which includes information on Seth and Mary (Greenway) Stratton. If your library doesn't have it, perhaps it can be through Inter-library loan from the Wisconsin State Historical Society Library. The other source is online at: http://members.tripod.com/~bobe611/Greenway/rr01_001.htm. This site was posted by a Greenway. It is mostly about the Greenways, but it has a couple of paragraphs on Seth Stratton and his family just a few paragraphs down from the beginning. I hope this helps. Donna

I guess the short answer is that I haven't made any headway on this but I am more inclined to believe that your Mary is very possibly the youngest child of William Greenway and Mary Stevens.

To my knowledge, William had no will but there was an Orphan's Court held in 1770 in which his three children, William, George, and Hannah were given over to the care of Elisha Dungan in order to be taught to read, write, and learn a trade. It's interesting to note that they would have been teenagers at this time.

I haven't done much research on the practices of the time, but it is my understanding that Orphan's Court didn't necessarily mean that the children had no mother, only that the mother wasn't in a position to provide for and properly "train" her children for a productive emergence into society. William's wife was Mary Stevens (Stephens) and I have found next to no information on her except that I believe she was alive at the time the Orphan's Court was held.

I have given a lot of thought to Mary Greenway who married Seth Stratton. It does seem entirely possible that she was very young (about 8) at the time William died and therefore, wasn't affected by the proceedings of an Orphan's Court. Also, I can't find any other Greenways in Winchester during this time and Mary was definitely in Winchester and seemed to be closely associated with Hannah Greenway in particular, and as you noted, Seth served in the war with William and George.

Mary was a common name but it was often the practice to name a first daughter for the mother of one of the parents and a second daughter was then named for the wife. That's not proof or even a very strong argument, but it is possibly a clue.

I've looked at William and Sarah Hamilton of York Co., PA also and Mary just doesn't fit in there either.

I will try to do a little digging on the practice of Orphan's Courts and see what I turn up. Boy, I wish I had a time machine available sometimes!
Seth Stratton and Mary Greenway Stratton are my fifth great grandparents. I'd like any information you may have on them. I am trying to figure out if Mary is in fact the daughter of William Greenway and Mary Stevens of Frederick County, VA. Some researchers say no. Ideas?? Also, if you know more about Seth that would be great. Was he born out of wedlock to Sarah Stratton???

I'm very interested in this. Seth Stratton and Mary Greenway Stratton are my 5th greatgrandparents. Other than the fact that Mary Greenway was not listed in William's will, why do you believe Mary was not his daughter? I do know that Seth lived in Winchester and served with George and William Greenway. Since he married Mary Greenway, is it not reasonable to assume she was William and George's sister in spite of the fact she was not mentioned on their father's will? Or do you think she comes from William Greenway and Sarah Hamilton of York County, PA?

I dont have any proof of who my Mary Greenway comes from. I wonder if you've made any progress on this. If anyone on here has researched the Stratton line, I'd be interested in speaking with them. I have some questions about Seth.

Parents of Susan Greenway of Carter Co. or Washington Co. TN?

Hi, i'm looking for the parents of my 2nd gg Susan Greenway who married my 2nd gg William A. Davis.

I believe my 2nd Great Grandmother is possibly one of the kids of a James K. Greenway of Carter Co. TN? She was B. May. 1865 in TN. She m. my 2nd gg William A. Davis B.Sep. 1850 in NC according to the 1900 census. In the 1900 census they are both living in Carter County TN. And 2 houses down are what appears to be a

Jones K. or R. Greenway B.Dec. 1848 in TN according to the census. And living with a Mary J.

In the next house down is a Joseph W. Greenway? B.abt. 1867 in TN with his wife and kids. I have a copy of the 1900 census if anyone wants to see it.

It is also possible Susan is the daughter of a Jack and Elizabeth Greenway, although i have some doubts about these people being her parents. In the 1880 census (unfortunately i do not have a copy of it.) In Washington TN There is a Jack Greenway B. abt. 1840 married to a Elizabeth B. abt 1837

their kids are as follows:

(Dau.) Sue Greenway (possibly Susan?) B. abt. 1860? in TN

(Son) R.A. Greenway B. abt. 1863 in TN

(Son) J.T. Greenway B. abt. 1866 in TN

(Dau.) M.I. Greenway b. abt. 1869 in TN

(Dau) Effie Greenway B. abt. 1870 in TN

(Son) John Greenway B. abt. 1871 in TN

(Son) Ben Greenway B. abt. 1874 in TN

(Son) Burnie Greenway B. abt. 1875 in TN

(Grand. Dau) Virtie Greenway B. abt. 1875 in TN.

I believe her father was James. As you can see from the 1900 census Susan was living in Carter Co. TN. Not Washington Co. TN. And she should be 5 years older than what the 1880 census states.

I also found and saved the 1870 census. And in it her name is given as Susannah J. Greenway in Washington Co. TN. In the 1900 census where she is married to my 2nd gg,her name is given as Susan A. Greenway in carter Co. TN. So i think these are two different Susans.

What do you think? Looking forward to a reply from everyone. Hopefully somebody can help me. Opinions are welcomed as well,i'm not sure which one is 100% her father, thanks.

Also in the 1900 census it shows that William and Susan have been married for 14 years. That would roughly be in 1886.

That would make Susan about 21 years old when they were married. As you can see by the attached records William A. or W.A. Davis and Susan or Susanna Greenway were married in Carter county TN on Nov. 26,1885. I hope this helps. Thanks

Re: Alexander Hamilton Greenway NC> IL > IO

Cindy,

The Greenway's are actually a part of my wife's family. My co-researcher for the Greenways since the mid 1980s has been Warren I. Greenway. Before retiring (I think he's about 90 now), he was a chemical engineer. But, since he was a young man, genealogy has been his hobby. He belongs to the generation of genealogists who's research meant traveling all over the country (including Caldwell County, NC) visiting cemeteries, hall of records, and court houses. The notes I've seen of his indicate that he is very a very methodical person.

Even though what I've written so far is pertinent, I'm finding myself drifting away from my real topic - the name of Alexander Hamilton Greenway's father.

So we don't confuse the two men named Alexander Hamilton Greenway, I will insert a Sr. after the father's surname and a Jr. after the son's surname.

I've seen many of Warren Greenway's notes, and, I've read your post dated February 22, 2011. I have a question about your post. Is your post trying to put some light on some documentation you believe proves "Joe Greenway" wasn't Alexander Hamilton Greenway, Sr.'s father?

If so, I noticed the court document you mentioned doesn't actually specify that Col. Wm. Greenway was AH Greenway's father. I feel that if the court document so said, then you would have mentioned it somewhere in your post dated February 22, 2011.

Even so, sometime I would like read the court document you mentioned in your post. Chances are, it could provide information about his economic and social position in his community.

Personally I have not seen the court document you spoke of. But, I also can't imagine Warren I. Greenway not taking a look at the document in his travels.

If, in your post of February 22, 2011, you are questioning Jane Gill's ability to know the truth about the father of A.H. Greenway, Sr. then lets look at some of those credentials she had now.

First: As far as I know, Jane Gill is the closest relative to Alexander Hamilton Greenway, Sr. to be interviewed by any Greenway family historian. She was born and raised in Iowa and before she married Alexander Hamilton Greenway, Jr, she lived in close proximity to the Greenways and had an opportunity to know the Greenways first hand before marrying into the family.

Second: Jane Gill didn't personally know "Joe Greenway". But she did know her father-in-law Alexander Hamilton Greenway, Sr. (A H Greenway Sr. didn't pass away until 1903, and she married his son in 1891. An overlap of 12 years.)

Third: The source for Jane Gill's statement could have easily been a close Greenway relative.

Fourth: Jane seemed to actually believed her source. If she didn't believe her source, I don't think she would have passed the information on to Warren, her grandson.

Fifth: I can't think of any reason why she would make up the name - "Joe Greenway."

Sixth: The odds were against Jane come up with the name "Joe" out of thin air. A name that later made sense when Warren I. Greenway found Joseph Greenway in his family research.

Seventh: "Joe" is often a nickname for Joseph. I'm unaware of any other Greenways of that generation whos names normally had the nickname of "Joe".

Eighth: Since I started researching the Greenways over 25 years ago, I've never actually seen any documentation that disputed the statement made by Jane Gill.

If anyone asks if Warren I. Greenway had the opportunity to interview his grandmother, the answer is yes. Warren was born and raised in Iowa. Jane Gill lived in Iowa while Warren resided there. His grandmother, Jane Gill didn't pass away until Warren was in his late 30s.

I hope post clears up any confusion created with my previous post.

Rodger

Jennifer - that's very helpful thank you. My connection also comes through the Alfred/Lillian route, but through Bertha.
For some reason I don't appear to have Jess on the tree, though I do remember my family talking about "Auntie Jess" a fair bit. Would you happen to know her DOB please? If you wish to continue through PM please feel free :)
Thanks
Stuart

I have that Col. Wm Greenway had sons Joseph, Wm Jr. and A. H. Greenways. (Wm Jr. Died young) and daughters Lucy Greenway who married Alfred Hartley and Elizabeth Greenway who married Perry Tomlin.

I have a document from Caldwell County Court of Pleas from October 1844 that is attached to the sale of Col. Wm. Greenways (Estate) personal property. Listing Alfred Greenway, Joseph Greenway and AH Greenway. Also AH Greenway is listed in numerous real estate transactions with the same people.

What I don't have after going through about 9 files is info on William's brother, Joseph and his family after 1800. Would be a good place for me to go back and check out.

Any documented information would be welcomed.

Thanks, Cindy

Lou Ella Lipsey Garrison was my great aunt. Her younger brother, Robert Emory Lipsey was my grandfather. You may want to talk w/ Jackie Isom, her grandson, Hamilton, Alabama. Attorney at Law, office 205-921-7488; fax-205-921-7489; email joisom@sonet.net. Parent of Ella/Robert were: Timothy & Sallie Farr Lipsey. As far as I know there isn't any Native American connection on the Lipsey side. My great grandmother, on my grandmother side (Oma Roberson Lipsey)she was a Dendy has NA blood but that doesn't affect the Lipsey line. Gggrandparents Thomas/Louise Lipsey came from Union Co., South Carolina

She was the daughter of William Greenway and Nancy (?), she was born 1800 in NC and died 1894 in NC.

We believe that Joseph Greenway was William's father and that they came from VA. William was born in 1774 and died in 1840.

Please advise.

Thanks, Cindy Holder Owens.

In working on my genealogy I came across a tree you have with Greenway connection. If you are interested in following this family I have found a site - Ga. Archives online..here is the link and if you do a broad search with Greenway only, you will get tons of Death Certificates, widow's pension applications etc. Happy Hunting! http://content.sos.state.ga.us/index.php

Richard Greenway - Australia

Hi,

I am trying to locate anyone that may have documented information on Richard Greenway who was the child of Jason Greenway and Hannah (Anna) Pickup married in 1840. I have his death certificate which does not reveal any information about his parents but am having trouble locating his Birth Certificate and State he was born in. He would have been born in 1840. Please message me if you have any information that i am looking for. We are trying to unravel a mystery.

Re: Rob & Amy Greenway of Midland Park, NJ

Marilyn,

I was just rechecking previous posts and came across your reply to my message. I never received a message from Ancestry telling me you had posted this. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I decided to reply here in case anyone else finds this information. It is a nice picture -- that's why I put it up. I am not related to the Greenway's but found the photo among my grandmother's belongings...sort of like a scrap book. My grandmother's name was Helen (Hazen) Junta. Her husband was Jacob Junta. She was born in 1907 and died in 2001 at the age of 94. They lived on Hill Street in Midland Park for many years.

It seems she liked to collect obituaries (laminated!), photos, newspaper clippings and other keepsakes, mostly of her own family members but sometimes others, too. My grandmother was very good about writing people's names on the backs of pictures. I looked the Greenway's up in the census records and saw one where there was a child named Charlotte but her name wasn't on the back of the picture. It was such a nice picture, I was sure someone would want a copy and thought if I included Charlotte's name it might help to determine that it was the right family. I guess my trick worked!

I grew up in Midland Park which is a small town (~1 square mile). Many of the families there were of Dutch descent. We all knew each other. My mother stills lives there and I swear she knows just about everybody. Sounds just like any other small town, you say? Well, this one is only about 15 miles west of New York City in the middle of heavily populated suburbs.

If you find any Greenway's who fought in one of the World Wars, Korea or Vietnam, let me know and I will see if the name is on any of the memorial monuments in Veteran's Plaza. I am also a FindAGrave.com volunteer so if you know where they were buried and its not too far, I will try to get you a photo.

As to how my grandmother knew Rob & Amy Greenway, here's my best guess: Since Rob was born about 1876 and my grandmother was born in 1907, I suspect the picture may have belonged to my great grandmother, Charlotte (Mulder) Hazen or even to my great great grandfather, Henry John Mulder. Henry lived to the ripe old age of 101 and died in 1943. The Mulder's lived on Paterson Ave. in Midland Park, only a few houses away from where Mariett Bird Greenway was living in 1930.

I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you do -- I'm just as curious about this picture as you are!

Vicki
