Hi I was interested in what you wrote and Henry and Margaret Pilkington as my ancestors had Sefton Fold Farm from 1837. I have found that the family of Barlow, my ancestors were there from 1841 census to the 1911 census when a William Barlow had the farm. I have not been able to find out any more information than that. Did the report from Manchester University mention who was the last owner before it was demolished (or bought !) to make way for the Stadium. I would be very grateful if you could let me know either way. My email is chezbrunetfrance@gmail.com
Many thanks in advance
Chezbrunet

Hi there- I'm trying to trace the birth records of Great great grandfather James Greenwood b.1838

James was living in Bradford by 1881 but census records show his place of birth as Todmorden (however there was some conflicting info giving his birthplace as Stansfield)
My gt gt grandfather was married to an Elizabeth Brown born in Colne? so won't be your direct ancestor but perhaps you have come across him in your researches?

By the way James and Elizabeth had a son called James making things even more confusing- I must say that people in the area back then weren't very imaginative when it came to naming their children were they? Did they have no consideration for future genealogists???

Hi - thanks for the reply- I actually have very little evidence to support the location just info offered by another researcher

I don't have a middle name or other info re James so everything is a bit vague

In fact I also have conflicting info from someone else that suggests James was born in Todmorden

Oscar married my maternal aunt Catherine Helen Kiely born 1907. Catherine was the second of two surviving daughters of Michael and Bridget Kiely, who were residents of Dedham Mass since late 1800's. Two other daughters Mary and Julia Veronica died before reaching adulthood.
Catherine and Oscar had 7 children, all born in Dedham MA.
Please contact me if you know of this Greenwood-Boisvert family for furthering my research if Oscar's family. Oscar Greenwood's parents (Wm.Greenwood? and Irene Obin?) may have lived in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston MA around 1930

GREENWOOD family of Cuddington Bucks

I am researching the Greenwood family who originated in the Cuddington area of Buckinghamshire but have got bogged down identifying a Thomas Greenwood and his wife Alice. I know they were married prior to 1709 when their first child was born, that between then and 1721 they had a further six children, all born in Cuddington, and that he died in 1733 in Cuddington. I do not know when or where he was born, when he was married or his wifes maiden name but I have reason to believe his parents were another Thomas and his wife Mary Nichols. I think he would have been born about 1685 but I am hoping there is someone out there who can help me close this final link in my tree .Any help would be appreciated.

Thomas Greenwood killed 1820 yell county ark

I would like to discover true heritage for Thomas and Elizabeth Greenwood of Yell County Arkansas. There is too much conjecture and no hard copy of any of what i have found.
My great uncle Radford told no such old family stories that I recall and I was there as I am Carolyn's sister. Carolyn passed this past year of liver failure and may have been confused. The story about cherokee and mulatto heritage religated to thomas and elizabeth greenwood, parents of Malinda and Radford Greenwood is incorrect. The mulatto is tracked to an error in 1880 census crossed out by enumerator. (RE; L greenwood, 1880 census) The cherokee history is tracked back thru Alfred Burton Greenwood who traveled as an indian agent from Georgia on trail of tears after this time.

Hi Karen - I am descended from Andrew Jackson Greenwood. The 1850 census for Buncombe has Madison and Washington living with their father John, and 'Jackson' living 'next door'. However, I haven't yet been able to 'prove' the connection with primary sources (a will, family bible, obituary, or other). There are, however, hordes of other trees who make this connection. Hope this helps. John

Quebec Canada according to census material. I am looking for info on my gg grandparents, and ggg grandparents. Their names are:

Joseph greenwood born in 1856 , wife Mary Greenwood (nee Gedike) born in 1865. Have lots of info on Mary. Need info on Joseph.
Josephs parents are Joseph Greenwood born in 1830, his mother is Eliza born in 1821. Joseph and Eliza have become dead ends. I have found no further information on Joseph and Eliza.

I know for certain that Joseph and Mary eventually moved from Canada to Wisconsin. (knight ironwood Wisconsin, ironwood gogebic Michigan area).

Could there be some connection? If so please message me.
Thanks much
Denise

I have just discovered from census records that my great -grandfather James Greenwood was born in Stansfield nr Halifax in the Calder Valley in 1838- he moved away but only as far as Bradford- about 12 miles in all- so that fits with the name origin theory anyway

My g-g-grandfather Manley had a daughter named Jennie.

I looked at the census records for 1870 and 1880 for the Thomas and Louisa Greenwood family. There is a daughter born May 1870 who is listed as Grace in 1870 and in 1880, her name is Mary J. I don't have any record of her past 1880 so this may be Jennie L. Greenwood who married John L. Costley. Census taker may have written down the wrong name or the family used a nickname for her.

Thank you very much for sending me the link! Where do you reside? I live in Wichita, KS. A lot of Greenwoods moved to southwest Kansas. I wish I lived closer to Illinois so I could do some research in person. I have been wondering if the mental hospitals might have kept records on Thomas Greenwood and why he was admitted. But if it is true that he was shot in the head, then he probably suffered from brain damage that would affect him later in life.

I will give you the website: http://dewitt.ilgenweb.net/1910history-abc.htm

once you are at this website, you need to scroll down to the name John L. Costley - if you read about him, you will see his wife Jennie L. Greenwood and read a little about her parents. I haven't found any trees that links her as one of Thomas and Louisa daughters, but I think that this is their daughter.

My husband is actually the Greenwood, but he comes from Manley - Lloyd Manley - Bronston - Larry (my father-in-law). It is really nice to meet up with you. Let me know what you think.

I thought this source seemed credible, since it is the history of Dewitt County.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Tara

I am also trying to find out information on this family. Manley Hilton is my husbands Great-great grandfather also. I found an article in a Dewitt County book that said that Thomas Greenwood and Louisa Brooks had a daughter named Jennie L. Greenwood. This book also said that Thomas Greenwood was shot in the head during the Civil War. I would assume if this is the right Thomas Greenwood, then he had a daughter named Jennie, and he was shot in the head. This family is really confusing to me also. I don't know if this is going to help you at all or make it worse for you. Let me know what you find.

Tara Greenwood

Hi Rachel,

I am also researching Greenwoods in the Yorkshire area in that same period, and yes, it can be a real pain to find what you're looking for. I searched for Edwin and found this 1861 census record: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=view&r=an&dbid=....

You'll see that Edwin was living with other children named James and Mary, which coincide with the half-siblings you have in your tree. Although Edwin's mother is listed as Ann in this census, it's possible that this is her middle name. The other possibility is that James re-married, which may explain the difference in their listed ages between this record and the marriage record you sourced.

I hope this helps. I'd be happy to help you out further if needed. Hey, our tree may cross paths somewhere!

- Keith

Hi,

Anybody else trying to trace Greenwood's in this area around 1851?

My great great grandfather Edwin Greenwood was born 1st June 1851, and baptisied at St Thomas a Beckett in September 1851. His parents are listed as James & Sarah, and lived at Underbank which is between Hebden Bridge & Todmorden, just below Heptonstall. (near Charlestown). James is listed as labourer as his occupation.

I am really struggling to find or confirm the correct James & Sarah as there are so many Greenwood's in the area. I did find a marriage record for a Sarah & James living in Stansfield near Todmorden in 1845, Sarah's maiden name was also Greenwood (great, more Greenwoods!!)

I cannot find any record on the 1861 census for a James and Sarah with a son called Edwin.

Can anyone help, or offer advice if you are looking for Greenwood's in this area?

Thanks,

Rachel

James William Greenwood was born on the 29th of June, 1880 in Wadsworth, Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire. In 1881, Jimmy was living in Hill House, Wadsworth with his father (Sutcliffe Greenwood) and mother (Sarah Greenwood nee Cockcroft).
His father, a fustian cutter, died in 1890 and his mother passed away six years later.
Jimmy had a bother Harry who also played for St HelensRLFC and I think koined the Liverpool Police (he had a wife Sarah Elizabeth Clark and a duaghter Rita born in 1910).
Jimmy was playing with St Helens RLFC and was a very talented centre at the time opf the 1911 Census. Jimmy is believed to have died in World War One
There is no definitive match to Jimmy as a WW1 casualty although the favourite is
GREENWOOD James Prince Of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) 266317 VIEW
Rifleman J Greenwood
Name: GREENWOOD, JAMES
Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Rifleman
Regiment/Service: West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own)
Unit Text: 2nd/7th Bn.
Date of Death: 10/04/1917 Service No: 266317
Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 4. Not sure of Mary or Agnes maiden names. Mary is from Ireland. They had around 13 - 15 children, have 13 of them named and appr. birthdates. Any one have anymore info on Robert and Spouse or John and Spouse? This set of Greenwood's ( according to spoken history of fam) started with Captain Charles Greenwood, in the 1600's. He came to gravesend, NY to spend time during a storm and decided to stay. Any info please on any of these????

Ron,

The Greenwoods had been moving from Northern England all over Britain and overseas long before John Samuel was born.
Even so, in the 1881 census, the vast majority of GREENWOODs in England were in Yorkshire and neighbouring Lancashire.

I can't find a John Samuel son of John GREENWOOD living or born in Essex in the 1841 or 1851 census, but there is a possible candidate in London:

1851. Clerkenwell, Middlesex.
John Greenwood aged 39, Carpenter & Joiner, born Middlesex.
Wife Martha, 39, son John Samuel 16, Clerk in Ironmonger's, born Holborn, Middlesex.

1861. Gt College Street, St Pancras, Middlesex.
John S Greenwood, 26, Builders' Clerk, wife Hannah M (possibly Martha) and three daughters.

If you think this is the right man, further data can be supplied.

Richard

I'm researching a family history for a friend, Michael Greenwood, who lives here in Parkes NSW Australia.

I have his ancestor's death certificate which records that he was born about 1838 in Essex. This is a long way from Yorkshire or Lancashire so it may be incorrect. His name was John Samuel Greenwood and father's name was John.... no record of his mother's name on the certificate.

He was recorded as having emigrated about1868 but this could be incorrect... maybe 1858.

I'm having difficulty tracking him down on the English census records.

I wonder if he is one of your Greenwood families.

Ron Dunford
280 Clarinda St, Parkes
NSW 2870- Australia

rondunford.chemist@nunet.com.au

Seek info concerning Charles Greenwood a blacksmith living at 300 Second St., Manhattan, NY in July 1845. Believe that his wife's name was Sarah. Charles may have died in 1848/9.

Re: Elza Greenwood

Hi Doug,

I am researching Elza Greenwood and Juanita Price as well. My questions to you is I found a Ramon as their child on a 1930 Census record that was 9 years old at the time and I am thinking that is Elza RAYMOND Greenwood. Are you sure they only had one child? Their residence in 1930 was Monroe Indiana. Please advise.

Jeff Hofstetter
jeff@xtremelean.us
801-540-9682

I know nothing besides what is on the card. I assume it came from California as some of the other cards, the only Mary Greenwood with those birth and death years on the Social Security Death index died in California.
