George Washington Greer

NFerrel1117  (View posts) Posted: 2 Jan 2000 8:39PM GMT
I am trying to locate parents of George Washington Greer, my great, great, great grandfather. He was born in 1835 and had 2 brothers, Ike (may have been Isaac)and Tom eventually settled in Clay Co, KY after serving in the Civil War. He was married to Mary Rollins.
Based on a family letter I have, his parents came from Ireland and settled in NC. His mother died and eventually his dad remarried. He left home at 15 and went to VA.

I have been able to find record of a William and Margaret Greer coming from Ireland in 1834, but no record of other Greers.

Any help would be appreciated

I have just begun my search for relatives and my grandfather is James Dewitt Greer, and his parents were James Claude and Effie (Williams) Greer. I'm told that James Claudes father was George Washington Greer and his wife was Cornelia or Cornilia Lenzy. Who both ended up in Alpine, Mississippi - where my family is from. We are now in Virginia

A number of us would like to know George's parents. It seems to be the $64,000 question. No one knows names, all the info we have is that he came from NC. Phyllis Anderson suggested the 1850 NC census as a possible source. That would have been about the time he left NC (age 15). His father was widowed and remarried. He didn't like his stepmom, got in an argument and hit her. He knew he'd be in trouble so left home. I am going to try local resources to see if I can find out anything, but I'm across country from NC so may not. From letter I have, I also know we are of Irish decent and that he may be first generation in North America Did you try to e-mail me? I didn't receive.

Since using this service, couldn't tell you whether I tried email or not. My George Washington Greer is from Union County, Mississippi, haven't found any details other than freebies I can access on the net. I'm really new to the ancestry research world, so I may not have some information that others do have. I'm also in Virginia, so whatever I can do to help in the search I'm willing.

We have a George Washington Greer, born 7/5/l852, died l/l3/34, in Franklin County, Virginia. He is a direct descendent of Moses Greer, who came to America from Scotland or Ireland in the early l700's. He had several children, some of whom settled in Indiana (we assume) and several that stayed in Virginia. George's wife was Emily Hodges born ll/9/l857 and died 8/2/l94l.
