Cody, most agree that the Greers originally came from Scotland from the Clan MacGregor. Your individual line may be from any of the links to that family. Do you know who your greatgrandparents were, where they were born and when? That would help. Probably someone on this message board is related to you and would be willing to help.
Good Luck

Greers of Ohio

Dear Cody:

My Greers were Scot-Irish from County Down, Ulster (Northern Ireland today). They landed in Philadelphia and moved to the Valley of Virginia, all before the American Revolution. Their son, John Greer I, was in the Battle of Point Pleasant, also known as Lord Dunmore's War, Oct., 1774.

His regiment later served in the Battle of Kings Mountain (S.C.).

Are your ancestors from VA of WV? Talk to your grandparents. If you still need this informtion for a class, please reply soon. Your e-mail address will help, also, what is your direct e-mail address? My great uncle, Charles Wellington Greer, b. Flat Rock, Mason County, WV, lived in Middletown, OH. Does he connect with your grandfather Greer?

We have been stumped by John Greer/Grier. We know he was in the Revolutionary War. His children were Richard, Robert, Elizebeth Sanders, Katie Crumley, Hannah Greer,M. Jackson, William B. 1790 My G.G.G. grandfather, all from Tennessee. Is there any chance your John Greer I is the same one?

My ggggreat grandfather is John Greer I and his wife was Jane Callaghan, both buried in Greer Cemetery, Pt. Pleasant (Mason Co.) WV. This is the same person you refer to. You mention Charles Wellington, I have his name in some of my info as well. I have been desperately searching for John I's parents. If you have any info to help me I would greatly appreciate it!!! My e-mail address is Lyank @ MSN.com or seekingsunn@yahoo.com. I am also the Secretary/Treasurer for the Greer Family Reunion.

I don't see any close connection with my Revolutionary War Patriot John Greer I.
The children's names are all different from the ones on record for our ancestor. However, I do keep finding John Greers who were in Virginia before the Revolution. You are wise to keep checking under both "Greer" and "Grier" but I have also seen it spelled as Greear. When searching on-line always use the "soundex" feature in case the exact spelling is variable. Would have answered you sooner but just saw your eply when answering the second reply to my previous entry.

We are currently attempting to prove/disprove that John Greer of Bath & Mason Counties, VA, was the son of Joseph Greer and Ann Lowe. It appears that Ann Lowe (various spellings) married more than one Greer or there were more than one Ann Lowe. I will contact you directly via your e-mail address later today or tomorrow.

Our John William Greer I was born c. 1753 in PA or VA. I have had numerous references to Franklin County, VA, Greers, but have been unable to connect them to our ancestors. None of the names you mentioned as spouse, etc. are familiar. They appear to be another group; but thanks for the reply.
