I am a Gregorio, first generation American. My father joined the U.S. Navy in the Philippines in the 70s at the urging of his father. They were from Quezon City. My grandfather was a police officer and dance instructor (to the film stars) there. He and my grandmother had 9 children. All of whom are now in the U.S. My dad recently sold their family home in Fairview Park, Quezon City, so we no longer have any roots left other than my dad's cousins, aunts and uncles. Would be nice to find out if/how we're all related.

Hello;
The Gregorio name came from Italy, Spain and Portugal. Not sure where it actually originated. My family came from Southern Italy (Avellino Province).
When the Spanish settled in the Phillipines and intergrated with the native people, that is most likely where you got your name. I am sure that through DNA test, we are all probably related in some way.

I am a GREGORIO, Filipino Born

Yet as I have never known, nor met another with Our last name, that I confessingly have manipulated myself to believe as a GREGORIO in my loss of never understanding what family means;this GREGORIO in wrong or right still walks in the AMBIANCE of OUR Family name. As if though Royalty of not riches invigors my veins. Yet the emmaculance of a Higher understanding as well enlightenment threads those around us with a touch of class only from the vessels of A true GREGORIO's HEART. Simply for being so alone and destructive within, We as cursed to live in struggle or wealth, we share by my testimony as a GREGORIO the common grounds of merely being the cosmic tail to BALANCE. Lamens terms: I live in the shadowed glow of light and darkness. Not of my choice yet where this GREGORIO was born into device and scenario, although with my challenges Ive surpassed. My evolution in this same blood as what is no less than a micro .00004 percent per say... to what vessels pump that strength thru your HEART... Is a question of I accept as in balance I am not so alone yet, I am my own GREGORIO and as now the crazy one of OUR famous name, I farewell in ease at 28years old, show the world our AMBIANCE, show our own what makes us SO SO APART.
Sincerely,
ME

Gregorio, Darlene Rose, born 1933, CA mothers maiden name, Valine

I am searching for my cousin Darlene whose mother's name was Bernice. I am attempting to match Darlene's born in California in 1932-1934 to a mother whose name was Bernice.
The California Birth Index gives the mother's maiden name but not a given name. My Uncle Martin Glover worked in a cannery between 1930 and 1933-34. I have verified that he was in Coulterville area in about 1934. Darlene Rose Gregorio was born in Sacramento County. I have a photo of Bernice and Darlene that looks like it was taken in Santa Barbara near the pier. Bernice would be of Portuguese descent. Any suggestions or connections you can make would be greatly appreciated. Or if this Darlene can be ruled out as a possibility.

Frank, This is Bob Lawrence (from Kristina's Trumpets Laurino reunion). I must have sent you a copy of Frank Sofia's funeral list from 1937, didn't I? There is a Rosario Marotta, Patraglia, and all of your Gregorios and gregorys. You must have a Sofia somewhere in your tree. I ran out of time for the family tree for now, but need to get back into it.

Karen

I grew up in the East Bronx which at the time was mostly Italian, so most of the names you mentioned are familiar to me. I also called my mom, who remembers a druggist named Patraglia and the names you mentioned too. Do you know where he worked?

Coincidentally, I too am a pharmacist but have not practiced in many years and my dad's cousin Frank Marrota was a druggist too who also worked in approx. during that time.

Having been there many times, I highly recommend a trip to Italy. The feast of St. Elana just finished in Laurino (she is the town Saint, and you should plan a visit there during the feast) which is really something to see. If you decide to go I can help with info.

The Italian version of the "Town Hall" or Municpali (not sure of the spelling) is where all the records are kept. If you write them, it should be in Italian. Also, when I was in Laurino, my cousin, who is fluent in Italian, and I manually traced my ancestors back several hundred years. But this requires reading Italian in for weddings and births and tracing back from record book to record book. Tedious but well worth it.

I will try and look for some pictures of Laurino that I can send to you.
Also, just to complete my family tree, Grandfather Francesco Gregorio born Laurino 1871, Dad - Dominick Gregory born NYC 1918 then me, born 1954.
Frank,
Thanks for responding so quickly. Francesco Petraglia was the son of Antonio Petraglia and Maria Mafia. Francesco married Nicoletta Bracco on March 26, 1885, in Manhattan. Nicholetta was from Polla, Salerno. In 1900, they lived at 304 E. 111th St., Manhattan. They had several children, but the census page is blurred and I can only read Antonio and John. Maria Mafia, his mother, was living with the family at that time, She was a widow. Francesco's son, Antonio, married Celeste Mennella Dec 10, 1905, in Manhattan. In 1918 Antonio Petraglia was living at 323 E. 116th St. and was a druggist. Are the surnames Bracco and Mennella familiar to you?
I have never been to Italy. I tried looking to see if the LDS library has filmed any records in Laurino and they haven't. The records from Polla start in 1866, which is too late to find Nicoletta's birth. Do you know who to write to in those towns to get birth, marriage, death records?
Regards, Karen

Karen, My grandfather, Francesco Gregorio came to the US in 1897. His wife, my grandmother, Cristina came in 1899. Both came years after Maria and Franncesco Petraglia.

Do you know where in Manhattan they were married and lived? Any children?

I visited Laurino twice and there are many people still there with last names of Mafia, Petraglia and Gregorio.
I have cousins ib Laurino who have the last name of Mafia.

Have you visited Laurino? If so, pls tell when and if you found anyone related to you?

I saw your post. Can you connect with Maria Mafia who married Antonio Petraglia? They were from Laurino. Their son, Francesco Petraglia, immigrated around 1879 and married in Manhattan 26 Mar 1885. Would love to find connections in Laurino.

Hello Rita,
I don't know if you still log into rootsweb but I saw your post (6 years later!) I don't know where in Italy Anthony Gregorio's family came from. All I know is my grandmother knew him around 1942 in Philadelphia. She soon lost contact with him but has been curious about his whereabouts, now I am too. She is now 93 and I wish I had completed this search for her even though I'm sure he has passed on. If you see this, I woud be interested to know if we are talking about the same person. Thank you.

Rita

You are most welcome! And, I also enjoyed our 'talk' and wish you luck on your search too!! If you find additional informatio, please let me know. I have been to my grandfather's town in Italy twice where I searched the Municpal records, births, deaths and weddings are all recorded, and traced my family back to approx 1800. If you can travel to Corisca, you may find some inetersting information and get a great vacaction (depending on where you are living now?)

Good luck
Frank

Based on the information that was given to me is Gregori (Gregory) came from Corsica (Bastia). The first of two Gregori men arrived in Puerto Rico were Estefano Maria & Salvador in 1824.

My Grandfather Angel Maria Gregory is a missing link to one of the two brothers that arrived from Corisca. The reason for that is his mother was not married & his dad was listed unknown. 6 Children were born Robert, William, Edward, Georgina, (Laura & Arnold were twins).

List of names Francois Maria Gregory appears. Surname Gregorio I don't know if there is any relations to the information above.?

Also, this same great-grandfather; Vincenzo SOFIA had a second wife Pasqualina ARCARO and a step son Charlie ARCARO who grew up in the same household with my grandmother, Marie SOFIA SURIANO.

The story is:
There was a beautiful and religious young woman who lived in Laurino. She caught the eye of the evil Duke. She rebuked his advances, and for that she was banished from the town. She went to live in the hills, in a small cave. She tended to the monks, and did good works for anyone who needed her. After she died, a young boy lost his eyesight, and his mother prayed to Eleana, and immediately his eyesight was restored. There were other miracles attributed to her. She was then named a saint. Her body was found in the cave. and every year the town people hold a feast in her honor, and some of the people make a pilgrimage to the cave. There is now an altar in the front part of the cave. On the left side of the cave, there is a small opening, when you slide through the opening, there is a level platform of rock, and that is where her body was found, and that is where they light candles and pray to her. Then there is a large bell outside the cave, and part of the ritual is to ring the bell.
Her bones were brought down and are in the church of Mary Major, in a glass coffin like box, and on top is a beautiful likeness of St. Elena wearing a copy of her actual gown. On the wall in a glass case is the gown that she wore. It is considered a sacred relic.
In the church in New York Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on 115th St. and Pleasant Ave. Is the statue of St. Elena that is the duplicate of the one in Laurino. It was brought here by our family and members of the Society of St. Elena in Harlem. These were people from the same area.

Anita

My grandfather, Francesco Gregorio left Laurino in March 1897 arriving in NY April 14th 1897. My grandmother Cristina Gregorio (her maiden name was also Gregorio) arrived in NY October 22nd 1899 with her daughter Giovanna who was 2+yrs old. I was in Laurino twice, 1999 and 2000, and met many cousins most of which are Gregorio's. There were some Durante's amd Mafia's.I have cousins from Laurino who are Nicoletti's and came to NY with my grandmother. I don't believe that I am related to Gregory's in Nanuet. I have a cousin who is compling a family history. If you can trace you family back to my grandparents let me know.
