Dear Joan:
It has been a long while since we have communicated, but I have found some answers to my search and wanted to share them with you. I hope this will help me to further my research even more now. And will allow you to have a little more about the John L. Gressel line. Here is the information as taken from my family site. Enjoy!

For 10 years now my second cousin, Cecil Mitchell, has been talking about my great grandmother, Nancy Mariah Jones Mitchell marrying our step great grandfather John L. Gressel after a mail order courtship. And I had found a small bit of information concerning this in the Oklahoma Almanac. However, I never have found the marriage license or any other evidence that the story was true. At least, not until now! I am thrilled to post this newpaper article from The Washington Post, Wednesday, February 6, 1907. It says it all! Thank you Cecil for standing by your story. I know many did not believe you, but here is proof. Grandma and Grandpa Gressel did indeed tell you the truth and you did remember it correctly. I hope you all enjoy this article:

MARRY AT FIRST MEETING
Wedding Culmination of Romance Started
Through Exchange of Letters.
Special to The Washington Post
St Louis. Mo.. Feb. 5.—Fifteen minutes
after they met in East St. Louis yesterday,
J. L. Gressel, aged forty-eight, of
Hooper. Okla.. and Mrs. Nannie Mitchell,
thirty-five years old, of Wythevllle. Va.,
were on their way to the office of Marriage
License Clerk L. H. Smith, who is-
-sued a license. In less than half an hour
after thev first saw each other they were
married by Justice of the Peace Uriscoll.
Mrs. Gressel was accompanied by two
children by a former marriage, and the
quartet departed for St. Louis, announcing
they would leave on an evening
train for Gressel's farm, in Oklahoma.
The marriage followed a romance of the
mails.
Several years ago Gressel went to Oklahoma
from Northern Illinois, where he
lost his first wife. About the same time
relatives and friends of Mrs. Mitchell
went to Oklahoma from Virginia. In
glancing over the picture album he was
attracted by her picture. A correspondence
and exchange of photographs followed,
and the couple decided to get married.

The photo to the right is Cheryl's maternal grandmother, Mary Poage Mitchell Tipton, her mother "Nannie" Nancy Mariah Jones Mitchell Gressel, her step-father John L. Gressel, and children Virginia Imogene, Lawrence Edward, Jr. and Vivian Lorine Tipton (momma) on the front porch on Railroad Street in Wytheville, VA circa 1935.

Found on www.newspaperarchive.com
Well worth the annual fee, this is the second information I found within hours of my search. I had been working on this and one other "lost relative" for the past 10 years.
Both found!
Cheryl Wilmoth Whittle
SouthernHeritageGrandma@comcast.net

Yes, Diana, I have a copy of the original from Pulaski County, Virginia. I have not found the birth record of Nancy. According to the marriage certificate she was born in Bland County, but so far I have not found her there. I also was able to get the death certificates for both Nancy (Nanny) and John Gressel. I have not as yet found any information other than a stone for Wilbert Mitchell. But then he died in 1900 when they didn't file death records. We do have a few photos too of each of them which was passed down from our grandparents. I have so many things I want to find out about. But there just is not enough time. And when you work full time it doesn't leave much "Play" time. I love this geneology!!! Thanks again for your assistance. Cheryl

Diane, first, yes John is listed in the 1910 Census in Wythe County Virginia with 2 step children. One is my grandmother and the boy of course is her brother. They were actually the children of Wilbert Shannon Mitchell of Caroll County, VA who died in 1900, and Nancy Mariah Jones of Bland County, VA. Nancy who is named as Nanny, married John after a mail order romance in St. Louis (still trying to get there to do research). The 1907 Oklahoma Almanac list this fact on the internet if you care to search for it. February 7 I believe. As far as the 1900 Census, you may have found a big key. I will try to check into it further in the next few days. Thank you so much for contacting me. I do hope we have solved this puzzle. Again, my thanks, and I will let you know if I can verify this information. Sincerely, Cheryl Whittle

Is your John L. Gressel the one in the 1910 census in Wythe County, VA with step-children Floyd and Mary Mitchell? I wonder if the Eva Gressel you mention was John's sister-in-law? The 1900 census for Cumberland County, IL lists an Evaline W. Gressel born October 1859 wife of Frank E. (Elonzo) Gressel.

Hi Joan,
I have a great grandfather who married my grandmother in St Louis about 1906 after a mail order romance. His death certificate says he was born in Canada. His birthdate was either August 1858 or 1868. He died November 4, 1949 in Marion, Virginia in the hospital there. I do not know who his parents were. I did find a photo of a Eva Gressel, referred to as Mother, with a poem and the date of her birth and death. Evidently, this photo was done in memory of her.
I am at a loss, as I cannot seem to find his family. I do have some leads, but have not found anything concrete as yet. Does any of this sound familiar or like it might connect with your line? Cheryl
