David (Nathaniel) Griffith born 1821ish in Kentucky (Black/mulatto).

My family has been doing extensive amount of research on David Griffith. However, it has yet to yield information regarding his parents and or siblings. All we can gather is that his father was from Massachusetts and his mother was from Georgia. In 1850, he was a free man as well as his wife Mariah Temms/Acers and their children. They moved from Monroe, Tennessee to Lamar County, Texas. Any information/help would be appreciated.
I have a Bathsheba Griffith that married John Butler in
Scott Co.,KY, I believe. They migrated to Jennings Co,In
around 1818 and later Decatur Co.,IN. John died in Jennings(
he was visiting a son there)
and Bathsheba in Decatur.

I am sure she is related somehow to some of the Griffiths that came from Delaware to Scott Co but so far I don't know
who her parents were.

Here's a possible hint for you. I am descended from what my uncle (who was the family genealogist) called the "Kentucky Griffiths" who he said were a different line from most of the Griffiths. My Griffiths wound up in Roane County, WV, but they came there from Bourbon County, KY.

They descended from Patrick Griffith and Marry Mullen, who came here from County Down, Ireland around 1795. They settled in Bourbon County, KY and had three sons - Michael, William, and Hugh. I am descended from Hugh. If you dig a little working down from the other two sons, you may hit pay dirt.

Good luck, and keep me posted if you find anything!

Laura (Griffith) Phillips

Hello, I'm trying to find information regarding CORBETT GRIFFITH b. 1895 in KY (changed his name to MCDANIELS), had a brother GROVER GRIFFITH b. 1899. Also had a set of twins in the family, one being ALONZO GRIFFITH. I am unable to find further info of parents or other siblings. The father died young and the mother had to send some of the children to an orphanage. I think Brown's Home for Boys in Ohio or Kentucky. Any information is greatly appreciated!

Griffith Cooke Marriage and Flight from Ireland Revisited

Hello All!
For 3 years now we have known that we descend from Richard Griffith and Elizabeth, Grandparents of the Evaluator of Ireland Richard John. A family member researching at the Library in Dublin has found our GGgrandmother Sarah Jane Griffith was the daughter of Richard John Griffith and Maria Jane Waldie.

In an article by Patrick Jackson, Cambridge University Press about Richard John Griffith:
" His eldest daughter Jane, was thought to have eloped to America at the age of 16, and was apparently never mentioned in the family circle again."

Robert Cooke was a gardener on the estate of Richard J Griffith and he eloped with Sarah Jane who was bored with boarding school. They fled Ireland ending up in Brockville Upper Canada about 1826 where their children are in the Anglican Church records there.
Sarah Jane was promptly disowned by her angry father and there was no further contact even after Robert Cooke died about 1840. Jane's letters home asking for help were ignored.
She farmed out the Cooke children to Robert's relatives in the area and left Brockville forever with an American fellow she married, having more children with him somewhere in the USA. She never saw her Cooke children again..Too bad because she would have been very proud of their accomplishments. So too would the Griffiths!

Have lots of information on that family. But am missing a lot on Allen and Emma's other children. Also still looking for Allen's parents. I believe he came from Ireland around 1856.

In 1874 she married Benjamin Wilson Robinson in Newton County, Mississippi. By the 1900 census they had moved to Texas. She died in Lamb County Texas at the age of 83 in 1936. I cannot find any documentation for her before her marriage. She is one of my "dead ends" and I'd really like to find out something about her family--parents, siblings etc.

Benjamin Franklin Griffith Obituary

I am transcribing obituaries from The Scotia Register (Scotia, Nebraska).

The Scotia Register
Volume XXX, Thursday, November 13, 1924, pg. 1, column 6
OBITUARY
----
Benjamin Franklin Griffith was born in Mount Morris, New York, February 23rd, 1845 and passed to his reward from his home in Scotia, Nebraska, Wednesday evening, November 5th, 1924 at 8:10 o'clock having reached the age of 79 years, 8 months and 12 days. At the age of ten years he with his parents moved to Brockwayville, Jefferson county, Pennsylvania and seven years later, during the year 1862 enlisted in company H 105 Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in which company he fought in the Civil War until May 6th, 1864 on which day he was severely wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness. On November of the same year he was transferred to company 14 Second Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps and was stationed at Stone hospital, West 14th Street, Washington, D.C. from which he was honorably discharged with the title of “Lieutenant Colonel” on September 2nd, 1865 going directly to Plainfield, Wisconsin.
On July 11th, 1869 Mr. Griffith was united in marriage to Miss Marie Jane Borden of Oasis, Wisconsin and to this union were born three children, Myrtle E., John Turk and Mary Jeanette. The two latter along with Mrs. Griffith, the wife and mother proceeded him in death.
In September 1878 the deceased with his family immigrated to Scotia, Nebraska, settling on the farm now owned by Mr. Arthur Schilling and from which he retired some years later to the village of Scotia, Nebraska where he spent the remainder of his life. He was admitted to the practice of law May 18th 1883 and for several years pursued a successful legal business in the district and supreme courts until some three years ago when because of the infirmities of age he was compelled to abandon the active work of his profession.
Mr. Griffith united with the Scotia Methodist Episcopal church by certificate August 15th, 1909 during the pastorate of Rev. Chas. Ford remaining a deeply interested devoted and benevolent member to the close of his life. Deceased leaves to mourn their loss: His daughter, Mrs. Myrtle- E. Smith (who cared for her father with the most tender devotion during the last two or more years of declining health) three brothers and two sisters, two nieces Mrs. Eva Johnson of North Loup and Mrs. Carrie Fletcher of Almond, Wisconsin, four grandchildren an six great grandchildren, besides many friends and acquaintances.
Funeral services were conducted in the Scotia Methodist Episcopal church Friday afternoon, November 7th, 1924 at two o'clock by the pastor, Rev. Jesse A. Monkman, after which interment was made in the Mount Hope Cemetery. At the conclusion of the ritualistic service for the burial of the dead was read by the minister and taps sounded by Mr. Ammerman. The body of another of our Civil War veterans was covered from the gaze of mortal man until the trumpet of God shall sound on the morning of the resurrection. Several members of the “Army of the Republic” and “American Legion” attended the funeral service.
----
CARDS OF THANKS
We take this opportunity to thank the many good friends and neighbors, who so kindly assisted us in the sickness and burial of our dear father.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Smith

Julie Middendorf
mjmiddendorf@nctc.net

Heavens no!! It's not the kind of thing you can get volumes of. The indices for Grantors (sellers) and grantees (buyers) are on film through the branches of the Mormon Family History Library. There are 135 rolls of film for the two indexes alone.

The various volumes are also on film through them. They are microfilms of the originals at the Philadelphia City Archives. The films are kept in Salt Lake City and can be rented for a fee (I believe it's $5.50 per roll) through the website and they will send it to your local LDS branch library. You don't have to be a member of the LDS to rent the films, but you must read them at the LDS branch library. Just make sure your local branch has a Genealogical library, some don't. If you do find something in one of the indices, you can also write to the Phila city Archives for the document. I don't know what the fee is now. It's been a very long time since I ordered anything from them.

You can go to the website, "familysearch.org" and look under Catalogue/catalog to see what they have. (I forget which way it is spelled.)

They also have films for Wills, Orphan's court records and a whole lot of other Phila records. Orphan's court estate records will help if there was any kind of dispute about an estate.

After a certain point in time, there are way too many Griffith's to figure out if they're yours or not. Today I got two books, a set of indices of Phila wills from 1811-1850. I can look in them for Griffith if you like.
Pat
the land that Jesse Griffith owned was at the triangle of Bustleton and Castor Avenues in NE Phila. roughly the area around Loney St to the triangle, where a Griffith St now lay. Part of the land he sold to his son Joseph Corson Griffith, as his name is on later landowning maps of Phila. check out this link and these maps (http://www.philageohistory.org/rdic-images

1850 map - lower dublin by sydney

1876 city atlas of phila, vol 3, 23rd ward, 1876 - plate K, plate L,

1887 atlas of the city of phila, 23rd ward, plate 11

1894 atlas of the city of phila, 23rd & 35th wards, plate 13, plate 20(jos. c. griffith), plate 22(jessie griffith)

1900 map - 23rd, 35, 41st wards of phladelphia

atlas of the 23rd, 35th, and 41st wards of the city of phila, 1910 - plate 19

Atlas of the City of Philadelphia, 23rd & 41st Wards, 1920
Plate 25

atlas of the city of phila, 35th ward, 1921 plate 18

Atlas of the City of Philadelphia, 35th Ward, 1927
Plate 18) these picks are of personal interest, but you might find some data you did not previously know.

re. exchange between Dorothy to Jesse, and from Benj. to Dorothy before that, there might be a chain of relation there. Ive seen Dorothy on censuses before, but as with all of the other Griffiths, it is difficult to connect them without some contemporary source of their time, ie a bible or some other source. Ill have to check out that book..

Jesse and his wife were buried at PBC on Krewstown Rd, Ive been there. his wifes family (Dungan) was very prominent in the church's history, and were high in number in that area and Bucks Co. Ive also noted Richard and Sarah Harris Griffith, who's plot is within feet of Jesse's. Ive done research on them, and it turns out Richard was from Wales, b in the 1790s. the other Richard is his son, and his wife Mary. the relationship between these people is very mysterious.

there are a number of other Griffiths buried at that cemetery, but for some reason, they do not appear on the church's records. I have at least 5-6 individuals (Jesse's children and grandchildren) that are listed to be buried there on their death certificates.

this book might be the missing link in order to discern who Jesse's parents are. I believe that the majority of those Griffiths in the immediate Phila area must be related in some fashion, even if very distantly through the old country. how else could it be explained that there are so many of them that settled in this locale? I know PA, and this area, was a hotbed of Welsh immigrants in the 17th century onward, so maybe it was simply word of mouth OR a sense of security knowing there were Welshmen ALSO named Griffith in one area. there must be information in some old books we're not finding.

many thanks, and stay in touch. maybe one day we'll make the connection and be able to link everyone together, tying together this huge clan.

Nick Griffith
nickjgriffith@gmail.com

Nick,
Thank you. I received much the same information many years ago, but was never able to connect them to my George Griffith. I did learn that George's parents were Jonathan Griffith and Mary Snyder both of Lower Dublin township, who were married in 1805.

I have some references in my files from some old Research. Phila 1848-1851 deed book GWC vol 17 p 86 sale of land by Dorothy Griffith to Jesse Griffith. Also an earlier reference for land going from Benjamin Griffith to Dorothy Griffith same book but p 84.

Also a copy of a letter from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. "Sophie Sheldon Rogers Collection" - "names taken from the Tombstones at Pennypack Burial Grounds" You may already have this.

"Elizabeth Griffith b 1810, d 1851;
Jesse Griffith b 1804, d 1897;
Richard Griffith b 1837, d 1886;
Mary Griffith b 1835, d 1903;
Richard Griffith b 1799, d 1864;
Sarah Griffith b 1807, d 1869;"

I'm not sure the following are in the same burial ground but they were included in the original letter.
"Griffith Miles b 1752 d 1835;
Joseph Griffith son of Thomas Griffith b 1747, d June 16, 1775;
Thomas Griffith b 1707, d June 16, 1785;
Alexander Griffith Attorney General 1713-1715 buried in Burlington NJ."
Pat

There are Seaborns in my Griffith line. According to a Henry County, Alabama History Book, a Griffith family lived in the area. - some in Henry County, AL and some across the river in Georgia. According to the book, Amanda Griffith had the following siblings: Clark Griffith, Seab Griffith (this is a common nickname for Seaborn in my family--pronounced see-bee), Jack Griffith (this is my great grand father) Eliza Griffith and Mary Griffith. The book says that their father was William A. Griffith. Census Records show that he was from South Carolina. I understand that there was also another brother, John, who moved to Texas. My great grandfather was born in 1825 in Georgia, Clark in 1822, Seab in 1827, Mary J. in 1832, John in 1835, Amanda about a year or so later in Alabama. John, Clark and Mary moved to Texas Amanda lived mostly in Alabama. No one knows much about Seab but believes he stayed in Alabama. Jack stayed in Georgia. I have a little more if you are interested.

thanks, I believe these are both relative to my search. I found a marriage license for Charles Griffith, my great-grandfather, signed by (exactly this way) Eliz Eveline Burgess, married to William H Griffith. I have attached this document. All the dates and ages seem to be in order. Now to do a little more searching. Anyway thanks again for your help.

Mrs. Jim Griffith of Valley Springs, AL

I am searching for the given name of Mrs. Jim Griffith (nee Massey). She was the daughter of Mr. George P. and Nancy A. Clowdus Massey. Mrs. Jim Griffith was listed as one of the surviving sisters of Frank P. Massey (1892-1953). Her two sisters were Mrs. Pinkney Sims (nee Grace Massey) , also of Valley Springs) and Mrs. John Brewer (Emma Lucille Massey) of Louisville, KY. The surviving brother was Robert L. Massey (1886-1969) of Little Rock, Arkansas.

The 1910 Census states that Mrs. Nancy Clowdus Massey gave birth to 5 children all of whom were living in 1910. However, only 4 of those children were listed with the family in 1900, 1910, 1920 or 1930. What is the given name of the 5th child?

I have no male relatives. There are some, thru research, I have found in Amory MS but they will not respond to any inquiries. If I could find someone close enough on my family tree that has been tested, that all I could hope for. Please offer any suggestions, or if you know of any Griffiths that are participating that have any connection to Tippah, MS, Carroll County MS, Bedford Tn. Some of my other-surname relatives lived in Orange NC. Thanks, I'm jealous, wish I had a male relative to get a DNA sample from. Linda Griffith Shobe.
