New Griffith(s) Y-DNA Surname Project

This is an open invitation to all Griffith, Griffiths, Griffeth, etc. descendants to participate in a new Griffith Y-DNA Surname Project. Comparative DNA studies are proving to be a great new tool in establishing family ties, particularly in cases where documentation has been lost. More and more genealogists are using DNA to break down long-standing “brick walls.”

The project is registered with the FamilyTreeDNA website at http://www.familytreedna.com/default.asp

The project website is currently under construction and can be found at http://www.griffith.dna.rdgriffith.com

The patronymic naming convention (using the father’s or other paternal ancestor’s given name affixed to the child’s given name) was practiced in Wales into the 18th century. When the English surname system was adopted, many families simply converted the ancestral name as a surname. For example, two individuals named Owen ap Griffith and Rees ap John might be paternal cousins, but would become Owen Griffith and Rees John. As a consequence, many Welsh family lines cannot be traced through a surname prior to the mid 1700s. DNA studies will help unravel some of these mysteries.

Participants must be male with a Griffith or close variant surname since the testing is done on the Y chromosome, passed only from father to son. Females or maternally-related individuals may participate by submitting DNA samples of a related Griffith male.

Please contact me if you would like more information.

Robert Griffith
Administrator
Griffith Surname Project

David Griffiths b 1844 married 1Rachel ? and 2Elizabeth Atherton

I am searching for ancestors of David Griffiths. He was born about 1844-46 in South Wales. While in Wales he married Rachel unknown b. abt. 1845 in Wales and had two children; David Griffiths Jr. born 1866 in Wales and Elizabeth Griffiths born1869 in Wales. They came to the United States about 1869-1870. In 1870 they were located in the census for Bangor, LaCross, Wisconsin. By 1880 the family was located in Hamilton, LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Rachel had passed away by then and David married again to Elizabeth Atherton born abt. 1850. (Elizabeth Atherton was listed in the 1870 census for Neshonoc, LaCrosse, Wisconsin as a domestic servant in the home of James Edwards) Sometime after 1880 the family moved to South Dakota where David and Elizabeth are buried.
Children born to David Griffiths and Elizabeth Atherton:
John Griffiths b. 1871 in WI (could be Rachel's son?)
Sarah Griffiths b. 1876 WI
Thomas J Griffiths b. 1877 WI
Charles Edward Griffiths b. 1879 WI or SD
Catherine Griffiths b. 1880 WI or SD
Richard H. Griffiths b.1882 South Dakota
Mary Louise Griffiths b. 1884 in SD
George Roger Griffiths b. 1889 SD
The book "The History of Brown CO. South Dakota" states that David Griffiths was a pioneer that settled what is now Cambria Township in the 1878. They settled on the west side of the James River.
Any help will be appreciated and I look forward to hearing from any cousins!

Can anyone help me please I am trying to find details of Charles Whittaker Griffiths. The only details that I have for Certain are he had a daughter Sarah Emma born about 1870 and that he was dead when she married in 1891. His occupation on her marriage certificate is stated as a coachbuilder. Her mother Sarah Griffiths remarried in April 1885 to a George Rideal. If sums and dates are correct the mother of Sarah Emma would have been about 17 when she was born. Both mother and daughter were living in the Manchester, England area on thier marriages. Any help would be welcome.

My families
settled in Butler County, Allen County, Hancock County,
and Putnam County, Ohio, USA within the 20 years prior
and after 1800, coming down the Ohio River, mostly by
flatboat, from Philadelphia, then traveling from Cincinnati to
Shandon (Paddys' Run) Butler County, Ohio and some went
on to Gomer, which is just outside of Fostoria/Findlay,
Hancock County, Ohio. I am active in the Butler County
Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, so, maybe we
can help each other. I have some history on the Griffiths
family, but not as much as I would like.

I'm not sure if we have a relation or not, but it's possible.

It seems that the Griffiths/Griffitts married several Davis family members and they were from Wales. But the line I have information on is as follows:

Aaron Davis and Rachel Laws came to America from Scotland and were born around 1758

Their daughter Susannah Davis married James Griffitts in Nov. 26, 1795 in Greenbrier W.VA. Other children included Harmon, Moses, Martha, Thomas....

James and Susannah's children included
Silas Griffitts married to Martha Jane Cain
Isaac Griffitts married Rebecca Rogerts
William Griffitts married Mary Cain
Aaron Griffitts married Mary Box (their children include Thomas Box Griffitts born in Kentucky in 1826)
Jesse Griffitts
John Griffitts

Don't know if this helps...if you think any of these are related I can send you more information
I am just getting started in tracing my family history. I am looking for Catherine Davies (October 20, 1878?). There is some confusion about the 1878 date because I have her grandson David listed as being born in 1881.

I think Catherine's daughter might have been Eliza Davies, who married Jacob Griffiths. Their son was Davd A. ( or John) Griffiths, born on the Pacific Ocean, Wales. Again, there is confusion about his birthdate, which I have listed as 1881.

David A.'w wife was Georgeana (sp?) Martin Griffiths, born in Canada (More confusion about the dates--I have her listed as being born in 1881).

Georgeana's daughter, who was my mother, was Eleanor Sophia Griffiths Smith, who was born May 5, 1920 in Green Ridge, Illinois, and died January 17, 1982, in Springfield, Illinois.

My mother had two brothers; Jacob Griffiths, born December 19, 1907 in Peoria, Illinois, and Married Marian Hartley on December 27, 1928, Jacob died in 1941 in Peoria, Illinois;
Thomas J. Griffiths, born June 18, 1911 in Nilwood, Illinois, Married Martha Watts, Divorced Martha and Married Noreen (?)in Michigan, Thomas Died August 17, 1958 in Hines, Illinois. My mother, Eleanor Sophia Griffiths Smith had three sisters; Mary (?), Georgiana (?) and Dorothy Violet Griffiths Dusoe.

Any information is appreciated.
Thanks
my email address is
allreds@txucom.net

William is my Great Grandfather married Bertha W Nickerson.
I have a letter he wrote my Grandmother in 1926 telling her that they Ensrined the Charles W. Morgan at Round Hill Darmouth Mass. He speaks of a man named Colonel E.M.R. Green. He also said that he gave in a lay book that he had been keeping from the begining to the end of the voyage when he was 1 mate of the Charles W. Morgan from 1911 to 1913. He was 2 mate in 1926 on a Steamer named Peyue(a-o)annock not sure on the spelling. This is the directions he gave her to write him Steamer Peyue(a-o)annock Pier 14 North River, New York City. William died in 1932 I don't know where, he and his son Llewellyn are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, in Fall River, Mass.
I would appreciate any help on William.

Thank You Linda
Griffiths, Lily

My grandmother is Lily Clara Griffiths born in birmingham in 1911, although her family originated in Wales. The name Clara came from another family member whom I am not sure of. Lily Clara Griffiths married Edward Tucker of Derby England. They had two children before Edward passed away.
Granny's father was Alfred Griffiths, and I belive her mothers name was Annie Wills. She told me one of her her grandmothers had the name Ida. I am still looking for more information...but will post more when I find it.
Thank you and Aloha from Hawaii...Thats right, Lily moved from England to Hawaii...Aloha
