I read your post very loosely looking for the name John Grigg, Virginia, 1711. No spouse is identified, but he had a daughter, Rachel, that married a Solomon Walker. Does anyone know anything about this line of Griggs? I can't find his spouse or his parents. Perhaps, I have the wrong person.

Mary

Has anyone ever come across the birth of a Samuel Grigg in 1803 in the Bristol area? He died in 1834 and is buried in Easton-in-Gordano. He was married in 1825 and his parish is listed as Long Ashton but this turns up no baptisms for Samuel.

Hey John,

I have recently required information on this family as well. The exact relation I'm not sure of since I've hit a slight roadblock in my research, but more information would be great. Has there been any progress made in your search, specifically on the Grigg side of this family?

Thanks,
Brandon Grigg
Kitchener

William Jasper Grigg married Martha Frances Sheridan

In my database I have had it for years that my great-grandfather, William Jasper Grigg, son of Carroll Grigg, married Martha Frances Sheridan, daughter of Joseph D. Sheridan. I found Martha's death certificate (she was indexed as Martha Jane Francis Gregg) from Jasper County, Missouri, listing her birth date as 9/16/1849; death date of 3/29/1924; husband W J Grigg. Her father was noted as being W.R. Sheridan, with nobody listed as the mother. I have seen that William Riley Sheridan (a nephew of Joseph D. Sheridan) also had a daughter, named either Martha J A of Martha J F Sheridan, whose ages on the censuses are generally a better match for the Martha who married William Jasper Grigg. So I am exploring the possibility that my database and others I have seen with her father being Joseph D Sheridan to be incorrect, and that William Riley Sheridan is her actual father. Does anyone have any other records that would confirm or refute this? Thanks.

Hi Murray, I appreciate your response and the information you included in your post. Yes, I do have a broad insight on the Grigg's which began when I started 'collecting stuff' not long after my Dad gave myself and four younger brothers a copy of Matthew Grigg's book, 'John Grigg, F.R.A.S.' Working on the commissioning team at the Anglo-Australian Telescope Board located at Coonabarabran. I was employed as their Senior Stores Supervisor and purchased much of the equipment bought to make the telescope self-sufficient in every way because of its 'remote location'. I also became a Telescope Operator and worked with many visiting overseas astronomers. Through the Telescope's new library - stocked with gifted publications and papers from overseas telescopes, I was able to gain access to many articles and references to John Grigg's work.
I have much to add to the Family Tree that will contain much of the Australian Grigg loop.
I have not progressed with establishing how John Grigg got to NZ? His name is not on the ship Anne Wilson (not 'Annie' as I and a lot of others once thought) Ticket, nor is it on the Ship's Passenger List - whihc means he wasn't on the ship? However, his wife Emma, and their three boys are listed on both! In John Lawrence Grigg's writings on the man, he briefly states that John Grigg fought in the Maori Wars with the famous Von Tempsky's Raiders [Bushmen] and is possibly why Matthew Grigg mentions that John and his family lived in military barrack accommodation in Auckland for a time? These two things are the only ones that I am pursuing on the NZ front, as I believe both Matthew and Viv and his Dad comprehensively covered same in their research. Like you, I'm not going to 're-invent the wheel' so to speak. It's early days for me with the work that I have undertaken. The reason it has taken so long, it that two of my younger broithers, at different times said that they were compiling the family history, but with both, it never got off the ground! At this stage I am concentrating on the Family Tree (BDM's and places) and hope to complete that by the end of the year? In the New Year I'm plannning to commence fleshing out the 'bones' on the skeleton of same. For my finished work planning for three (3) parts:
Part One: The results of my efforts.
Part Two: Matthew Grigg's book in its entirety. (Which I have now digitised - because the old Roneo print was fading - a job that spanned two months!)

Part Three; John L. and Vivian Grigg's work. It too will be as is. Because all the links and references, with comments and queries etc., are listed in the footnotes. This means that if anyone in the future decides to 'go in deeper', they can simply pick up where they left off.

Cheers for now and thanks again,

Frederick (Fred) Grigg, IV (only joking, as through the line from Frederick Henry, there's Frederick Henri; and Frederick William, then myself! I broke the 'traditon' by not calling my first-born son 'Frederick', due to the great confusion it caused years ago, with two 'Fred's living in the house!)

Are you able to refer me to 'someone' somewhere in NZ who may be able to help?
Many thanks,
Fred G.

Hi Fred

A quick search of Rootsweb provides the following information:

Annie Wilson
Ship: 1118 tons
Captain: John Duckett
Surgeon Superintendent: Dr Henry Bedwell
Sailed London May 28th 1863 - arrived Auckland September 21st 1863

Our sincere thanks to Barbara Couch for sending us this list.

And listed among the passengers are:

Grigg:

Emma

Frederick H

John H

Albert

Of course I have no way of knowing whether Barbara Couch's list is accurate - but equally, no reason to doubt it.

I was intrigued to see him listed as John H, as I had never heard of his having a second name. Perhaps it was Handel?

Apropos Russell - I last saw him in 1951. When Matthew and Dorothy took the extended trip to England during which he did much of his research, Mother (Stella) and I went to Lower Hutt to look after Russell and run the household.

I do not intend to pursue the Grigg side any further. Indeed even my Finlay research is virtually complete apart from births, deaths and marriages.

Murray F

Thankyou for your quick reply. I have most of the info that you respondede with. I too have decided not to proceed with Joh Grigg, but to add my knowledge as Part One, Matthew's as Part Two and Viv's as Part 3 to the finished product.

John Grigg's name is not on the Pasenger List of the Annie Wilson, and not on the Ticket as said before? He wasn't on the ship, so how did he arrive in NZ?

I've picked up on comment that John Grigg served with the Forrest Rangers or Bush Raqngers in the Maori Wars?? Where can one find a Nominal Roll of those who served (eve with Von Tempsky's Raiders (?)

We met Russel in Brisbane last year. However, we found that he was not all that up-to-speed on his past family history.

I have many photos taken by John Grigg FRAS, as I had the pleasant task of working on the Commissioning Team for the Anglo-Australian Telescope at Coonabarabran, NSW back in the 70's for a couple of years as Senior Stores Supervisor and Purchasing Officer. When the telescope was commissioned I also was trained as a Night Assistant (i.e., telescope operator). This gave me access to astronmical publications that contained articles about JG's work and discoveries! I have quite a number of pictures.
Will advise when other infor comes to hand.
Regards,
Fred Grigg

Hi Fred,

Good to hear from you.

I am one of the few surviving grandchildren of John Grigg. My mother Stella was almost 45 when I was born in 1935. To the best of my knowledge, the only others are Russell, son of Matthew Henderson and possibly, John, son of Felix. I have not had contact with Russell for many years, and last saw John when I was in NZ in 2003.

Naturally I didn't ever meet John Grigg, who died 15 years before I was born, but I do remember Mary Jane, who was living with us in Tauranga at the time of her death.

When I retired in 1995 I decided to undertake a family history project and looked first to the Griggs, inspired by the many stories of John Grigg. But when I looked at Matthew's fine book I realised that do so so would mean covering ground already covered (this was in pre-internet days) so turned instead to my Finlay side. From your note it would seem that you know as much as or more than I about the Griggs.

The Finlay has turned out to be very rewarding. Not only do I now have some 4,500 Finlay relatives in my database, but have also met many of them - in Ireland, Canada, the US and NZ.

In fact I did not ever have much to do with the Grigg relatives. I think that when Stella married my father she became almost estranged from her brothers. There was little contact between them until after he died.

Apart from Matthew, Felix and their families the only othher ones I can remember meeting were Hilda, daughter of Albert Edward, and Belinda, daughter of Haydn, who lived in Sydney.

No doubt you have done so already but there are some very comprehensive stories about John Grigg's astronomical feats available on the internet.

Apropos you comments on the Annie Wilson, herewith a note from my database:

Auckland City Library list of passenger arrivals quotes:

GRIGG, John H Vessel ANNIE WILSON: Sept 21 1863

Notes 1886 Addresses presented to Sir George Grey list Grigg, John as arriving in September 1863

Source: Addresses presented to Sir George Grey, K.C.B. by the European and Maori residents in the province of Auckland on his seventy-fourth birthday, April 14th, 1886 (Microfiche) Addresses presented to Sir George Grey GNZ MSS 275, p. 160

Don't know whether this helps or not.

If you have not seen it, you may be interested in this John Grigg, F.R.A.S. (From The Amateur Astronomer, Vol 18, No. 2, pp20-23, December 1958)

John Grigg was not born in New Zealand but it was in this country that his schoolboy interest in astronomy was revived and flourished. He thus became New Zealand's first native astronomer. In earlier articles I have mentioned how the development of astronomy in this country was influenced by transits of Mercury and Venus. It was the anticipation of the transit of Venus in 1874 which led Grigg to erect an observatory at Thames.

Rain and cloud prevented him from observing this transit but Grigg went on with his studies of the heavens to become New Zealand's best-known astronomer and one of its most active observers.

John Grigg was born in London on June 4, 1838. He was left an orphan at the age of 17, married at 20 and brought his young wife to New Zealand in the ship Annie Wilson in 1863. Before this his musical ability led him into choral and philharmonic societies in England and he was one of the thousand singers at the performance of "The Messiah" in the presence of Queen Victoria at the great Handel festival at the Crystal Palace.

Grigg first lived at Auckland. Between his arrival and departure Auckland had experienced a war and an economic depression, the seat of government had been transferred to Wellington and gold had been discovered at Coromandel and later at Thames. It was the latter discovery, made in 1867, which must have finally influenced Grigg to move his home to the booming town of Thames in 1868.

He established a shop in which he sold pianos and other musical instruments and assisted in the formation of the Thames Choral Society, of which he was conductor. From 1878 to 1888 he was a teacher of singing in schools under the Auckland Education Department and also conducted private classes for teachers.

Grigg was left a widower with five sons and, after educating them and giving them a start in their chosen careers, he married again 13 years later, his second wife bearing him a daughter, appropriately christened Stella, and two sons.

With his interest in music and his ability to play a number of instruments, it was perhaps natural that he should also become a composer of songs. One of these, "My Own New Zealand Home", composed in 1889, became almost a second national anthem. It was sung at many civic functions, including the opening of the Thames-Paeroa railway line, and was familiar to children in most schools of the province about that time. Many Aucklanders recall singing it at the first Arbor Day ceremonies at Parnell school in 1892.

But it is Grigg the astronomer with whom we are most concerned. Disappointed at the transit of 1874, he nevertheless continued his observations of the sun, planets and comets and was rewarded with an excellent view of the second of the pair of transits in 1882, it being recorded in the New Zealand Herald of that time that: "Mr Foy secured some photographs of the transit at Mr Grigg's observatory at Thames."

Undoubtedly these photographs were taken with a camera made by Grigg and mounted on an equatorial telescope, the clock drive of which he had also made.

Grigg's music shop was also his home and it was behind this shop in the main street of Thames that he built his first observatory. About 1884, fearing that the position was likely to be crowded out by other buildings, Grigg retired from the shop and built a home in Queen Street. The observatory which he erected there, later to be the scene of many astronomical discoveries, is illustrated in this article.

The ground floor was an office and "workshop", above which was the domed observatory. This contained the equatorially mounted 3½ inch refractor with which small instrument Grigg did such noteworthy work. There was also a small transit instrument with which he daily determined the correct time to maintain the accuracy of a large clock in his office below. Many people called each day to set their watches by it. Grigg also set up a meridian mark on the Una hill and, in case this should be interfered with by operations at the Una mine, a smaller mark nearby.
Grigg's observatory was always at the disposal of visitors in the evenings, when he showed them the "glory of the heavens" and explained many of its phenomena. He kept a visitors' book in which were recorded many famous names, but most were those of humble folk, adults and children, who had enjoyed the hours spent with him beneath the stars.

The qualities which made Grigg an outstanding astronomer were not immediately apparent. One has to remember the time and place in which he lived and worked. The fact that he had to determine his own time was an indication of the astronomical backwardness of the country.

What made Grigg exceptional, in my opinion, was the fact that he set up what was in effect an astronomical centre in the province. He supplied time to the citizens, he was willing at all times to whet their interest in the science which was to him an absorbing study, and he lectured upon it when invited. Meanwhile he continued his observations assiduously and with profit.

When he discovered his first comet in 1902 he not only recorded its position from night to night but did so with such accuracy that he was able to compute its orbit, which was published in Astronomische Nachrichten. Very few discoverers of comets in the history of astronomy have performed this triple task of making the original discovery, securing good observations of position, and computing an orbit.

It is as well that Grigg was able and willing to do so because no one else at that time saw his comet. It was not until it returned in 1922 and was rediscovered by Skjellerup that the accuracy of his observing and computing enabled the two discoveries to be recognised at the one object.
Grigg's stature as an astronomer was revealed also in the fact that he stood alone. There was no great interest in astronomy in Thames, the first astronomical society there was founded only a year or so ago and there was therefore no one of identical interests and intellectual calibre with whom he could associate. A scientist finds stimulation in his conversations with others and in the sharing with them of inspiration and ideas. Grigg never enjoyed this stimulation at close quarters. He occasionally paid visits to the equally famous observer, J. T. Ward of Wanganui, and lectured to Wanganui astronomers. He also enjoyed the friendship of such men as Richard A. Proctor, a prolific writer of astronomical textbooks at that time, and Dr A. C. Crommelin, of Greenwich Observatory, but their interchange of letters lacked the value of personal contacts and discussion.

Nevertheless Grigg maintained his interest in astronomy, continued actively observing almost to the end of his days (he died at the age of 83), operated his one-man astronomical centre, wrote articles about all interesting phenomena for the press and for many years supplied a monthly astronomical column in the Otago Daily Times and Witness. Although entirely self-taught in his hobby, he built for himself a splendid reputation among New Zealand astronomers.
Grigg was a member of the British Astronomical Association, being especially active in the work of its comet section, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1906.

He was best known overseas as a discoverer of comets. His first success came in 1902 when, on July 22, he made the third discovery of the year, that of Comet 1902 II. Although it was north of the equator in Leo no one in the Northern Hemisphere saw it before it disappeared early in August. As I have already said, Grigg's observations and orbit enabled this comet to be quickly recognised by Professor Leuschner when it was rediscovered by Skjellerup in 1922. The comet, which has since been known as Grigg-Skjellerup, has the short period of five years and has made eleven returns to our neighbourhood, the last being in 1957.

Two other cometary discoveries also bear his name. These were Comet 1903 III which he found on April 17 of that year and which remained visible until May 28 and Comet 1907 II, which was also found independently by Mellish and therefore bears the name Grigg-Mellish. This comet, which was seen from April 9 to May 14, 1907, is probably identical with the comet of 1741. Grigg was 69 when he found it.

Grigg also was the first to detect the return of Comet Encke in 1898, picking it up on June 7 of that year. The excellence of his photograph of the comet of 1901 led the Royal Astronomical Society to include it in its photographic records. He was also the only New Zealander to secure a successful photograph of Halley's Comet in 1910.

It is significant that Grigg's discoveries, for which he was awarded two medals by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, were all made between April and June, months which most New Zealanders would regard as perhaps the most unsuitable for astronomical work. His daughter tells me that Grigg often spent the early morning hours from 2 a.m. to 5 searching for comets.

Grigg, apparently, was more than a good observer. He had the vision which enabled him to see into the future. He was, for example, interested in sunspots and their effects on the earth and made daily sunspot observations at his observatory. A niece tells me of her vivid recollection of a visit to his observatory. He showed her a little lamp which shone like a star when a button was pressed. "In your time," he said, "that light (electricity) will illumine your home."

Grigg as a man was of great integrity, holding strong Christian beliefs, remembered by his friends as well as his children with the highest esteem and affection.

When he died in June, 1920, his home was sold, the observatory removed and the telescope handed to the only one of his seven sons who followed a scientific career, Mr F. J. T. Grigg, Dominion Analyst and director of the Dominion Laboratory, Wellington.

As in life Grigg worked alone, in death he suffered the penalty of isolation. No adequate obituary notice was published to remind posterity of his life and work. I am particularly happy, therefore, to be able to publish this appreciation of his work for astronomy in New Zealand and must acknowledge with gratitude the assistance of his daughter, Mrs Stella Finlay of Tauranga, who provided so much of the information contained in this article.artle too:

I would be interested to hear more from you on the subject

Regards

Murray Finlay

I came across your post from 2009 re Stella Grigg. We are related to John Grigg, F.R.A.S. I'm descended through his first son Frederick Henry. I have a copy of the Family History by Matthew Grigg and also copy of the history compiled by Viv Grigg and his father.
I'm trying to fill in all the "blanks" that I can. However, I'm stuck on how John Grigg came to NZ? The Albertlander Group tells me that if John Grigg's name was not on the ticket that's included by Matthew in his book, then he was not a passenger on the Annie Wilson? Also, did John Grigg serve with the Forrest Rangers in the Maori Wars? Trust this gets to you, Blessings, Fred

Greetings, I have been asked by a co-worker to try and trace a friend of his. They were together in the Air Force while stationed in Culver City, California. A couple of facts I do know is he was born in North or South Carolina and he didn't like his first name.
I do know his middle name but I want to hold that information to be able to verify information with anyone who replies to this note. Dewey should be in his late 60's or early 70's.

Thanks,

Daryl Gragg, Researcher
Hi - I am new to this, but am also looking at Jesse Grigg. I am a descendant of Jessie Grigg (b 1803) and Rebecca Tucker. I think that this Jessie is the son of Woodward Grigg. Woodward appears to be the son of Jesse Grigg, but I am confused about Nancy Webb and Martha Elam. On "RootWeb" I read that Jesse married Nancy, and then Martha. From an earlier post on this board, however, it appears that there was more than one Jesse - one who married Nancy and one who married Martha. Do you have any suggestions on how to find out which one is my ancestor?

I came by the death certificate for a W H Griggs who died in 1911 in Montague County Texas. I believe it is the death cert for Wiley H Griggs; it lists the birthplace of W H as Tennessee, and the parents as Carral Griggs and Miss Johnson.
Emmanuel Grigg

Emmanuel Grigg born 1804-1885 married Mary Culvit 1807-? Born Smethwick. Their son Samuel born 1834 Smethwick in Smethwick, Staffs married to Mary Skade Anderson
Father and son glass cutters/workers. Emmanuel appears on Census 1851 Lancashire, 1861, 1871 and 1881 living with George his son. Also appears as the father of Samuel and Mary on their marrige certificate and classed as glass worker. Along with Mary's father James Anderson.
Does anyone have Emmanuel's father and mother's name or anything at all about Mary Culvit before her marriage. Thanks

Tribal Ancestry Chart????

I am reposting this message in hopes someone new sees it.

I found a message posted on the Dotson Forum and cannot make contact with the person that posted it, Brandy Kingsolver. I will repost the message on this forum in the hopes that someone knows what Tribal Chart she is referring to. The Archibald Dotson listed here is my grgrgr-grandfather.

Thanks for any help,
James Gastineau
apd_282@yahoo.com

Hi Everyone,
I've been reading all the messages and although there is a wealth of info for me to start on, I have not seen anything about Archibald Dotson or Celey Raincrow. I have a copy of a Tribal Ancestry Chart for a Elva C.L. Griggs. It connects the Griggs, Jones, and Dotsons. Here is just a short part of it:
William Abraham Dotson
b. 1783 North Carolina
d. 1862 WarEagle, Arkansas
m. Nancy (Elizabeth) Raynor (1798)
d. 1838 McMinn County, Tennessee
(William was Choctaw and Nancy was Cherokee)

On this chart it only lists one child although I have found record of more.
Archibald Dotson
b. 1800 - 1802 North Carolina
d. 1881 + WarEagle, Arkansas
m. Celey Raincrow 1825 (?)
b. 1799 Kentucky
d. 1874 Oklahoma
(Archibald was Choctaw, Celey was Cherokee)

Archibald and Celey had William Dotson who married Eliza Spencer. They had Cynthia Adeline Dotson b. 1871 in WarEagle, AR married Louis Gum Jones b. April 17, 1870 in Mt. Vernon, MO. He died Jan 28, 1956 in Stockton, CA and she died 1890 (?) in WarEagle, AR.

I have more that I would be happy to share. Louis & Cynthia were my maternal Ggreatgrandparents and I'm trying to sift from there. And fill in blanks with the Dotsons.

Please contact me here or at my email address. Am looking forward to hearing from anyone.
Brandy
Hi Pam

Nice to hear from you again.

I have details of Thomas Grigg and his wife Hannah and their children but nothing further back. Certainly Job was a regular name in the Grigg families around the region.

This information, down to 1940s came from a Beryl Van Horn of Lancashire back in 1999 - have you contacted her by any chance.

Let me know how you connect back to Thomas and Hannah and I will see what else I can find for you.

Kind regards

Terry Grigg

Hi Sam

Nice to hear from you.

Yes I have a large database of Grigg individuals from Devon and Cornwall, over 21000 at present.

I have Jacob Grigg marrying Grace Cook as his second wife in 1765. They had children from 1768 to 1778, all in St Dennis.

Previously he had married Joan Brewer in 1754 at Roche and had children between 1755 and 1762.

Jacob was born in 1733 at St Dennis in 1733 the son of Abraham Grigg and Joyce Phillips who had married in Roche in 1723.

Abraham was the son of Richard Grigg who was born circa 1660s.

I would be very interested to know how your Grigg lines connects back to Jacob and Grace. If you need more information please let me know.

Regards

Terry Grigg

Not a problem, glad to help and Your welcome. If the tree if private, you can't see the info, but you should be able to contact the person through the tree. Look for the place where is says contact, then send a email. sometimes they answer back sometimes not. The one I looked at was not private so you should be able to see the information. Maybe you have to be a member, I am not sure. You should be able to see some of the trees. You do have to pay to see any of the data base Ancestry offers.
