I am looking for more info on my Griggs Line I have found most of them from the mid to late 1800's come from Alabama. The last member of the Griggs line I have found was James Griggs from Tennessee born 1805 and married Nancy Chapman. I am at a dead end after that.

Thomas Griggs (1748-1819) - Monongalia County, (W)VA

It looks like I come into the Griggs' line with Thomas being my 6x Great Grandfather through his daughter Rebecca Rachel Griggs (1777-1857). Below is my connection, and I would love further information on Thomas and his lineage as I'm stuck and can't go any farther back. I have them mostly in Monongalia County, West Virginia, which used to be all a part of Virginia.

Thomas Griggs (1748-1819) m. Louise (or Lois) Watson
Rebecca Rachel Griggs (1777-1857) m. Robert Ferrell III
Elizabeth Ferrell (1797-1880) m. George Thompson
John Wesley Thompson (1827-1906) m. Elizabeth Kemp
Francis May Thompson (1862-1932) m. Frank W. Raitz
Edith Irene Raitz (1893-1946) m. Benjamin Franklin Lusby
Clarence Wesley Lusby (1914-1966) m. Elizabeth Armistead Hennings
Alan Franklin Lusby (1941- ) m. Carol Ann Sporie
Elizabeth Ann Lusby (Betsy) -- that would be me.

Any additional information/history of the name/family would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if you are still on here looking, but I think I can help you just a bit. I come into this line a way's back as I believe Thomas Griggs is my 6x Great Grandfather thru his daughter, Rebecca Rachael Griggs.

I believe his wife was Louise or Lois Watson (don't have any further information on here).

I have Thomas Griggs being born about 1748 in Monongalia, (W)VA. It was Virginia at the time. I have him marrying Louise/Lois Watson about 1768, but don't know where. Rachel (my 4x Great Grandmother) was born in 1777 in Va and she married a Robert Ferrell III in Monongalia County, (W)VA.

I hope the little bit of information I gave you is helpful. If you have any other information on Thomas like his parents, I'd love if you could share with me. I'm quite stuck at Thomas Griggs at the moment

Griggs, Minus born 1715

I keep finding information listing John Griggs born between 1710 and 1712 as Minus Griggs' father. This is obviously not accurate. There are a small few who list a John Griggs born in Kent, England in 1676 and died in Kent, England in 1761. These dates are far more plausable, but then again Minus Griggs born in 1715 is listed as being born in Virgina. If anyone can shed any light on the "John" Griggs that is supposedly the father of Minus Griggs born in 1715 I would sure appreciate it.
Thank you.

I am researching my husbands ancestry and I have hit a brick wall. His great grandfather was apparently adopted, but that is all the information I have about his birth. His name was Benjamin or Bennie F. Griggs born abt. 1905 in Texas. He married Clara Belle "Clarabelle" Presnell on June 29, 1927 in Randolph County North Carolina. I have found census with him living in Asheboro, North Carolina in 1930. Bennie and Clarabelle had three children: Joyce Faye Griggs born 14 Dec, 1931, C. Louise Griggs born abt. 1928 and Dorothy Griggs born in 1930. I can not find any other information on Bennie Griggs and was hoping that someone out there would have some information on him and his family.

It's late and I am too tired to figure up how many greats Ezekiel Hampton would be in relation to my family tree, but this is the father of Bridget Hampton Garland (about my 7th great Grandmother. She married Gutridge Garland (about my 7th g grandfather. I know it is a long and winding journey,as to how they wound up here but they are buried in Red Hill, NC near Bakersville, NC in Mitchell County in the Red Hill Cemetary or Garland Cemetary. They have many, many descendants in this area. I was just surfing the web and am just thinking about dabbling in my genealogy. Sorta of a new hobby to take up in my "wonderful years" A very distant relative maybe?? Calla Byrd Gouge

Benjamin & Elizabeth Griggs Family of Clinton Co., Ohio.

I am working the family of Benjamin Griggs and Elizabeth Ryerson or Rheinerson or ... This family arrived, near New Vienna, Clinton Co., Ohio about 1818 from NJ with about seven children and had three more. Benjamin and Elizabeth died there about 1834. I have not found any Griggs families in the 1820, 1830, or 1840 census records in Clinton or adjacent Ohio counties. Their children were
James Griggs 26 Oct 1805 NJ-6 Aug 1859 who moved to Morgan Co., IN where he married 24 Mar 1831 Nancy Evans Chamberlain. Both are buried there in the Old Methodist Cemetery.
Abraham Griggs 25 Dec 1807 NJ-17 Apr 1888 married Clinton Co., Ohio 18 Sep 1828 Margaret Matthews. They moved to Morgan Co., IN and are buried there in the Centerton Cemetery.
Isaac Griggs born est 1809 NJ needs to be found.
James Villars married 15 Jun 1830 Clinton Co., Ohio Frances Griggs born 1811/2 NK and they were in Vernon, Clinton Co., Ohio in the 1880 census.
Alford Robbins married 21 Oct 1832 New Vienna; Clinton Co., Ohio Isabell Jane Griggs born 5 Nov 1813 NJ died 16 June 1905 buried Mooresville Cemetery, Morgan Co., IN
Isaac Bowers married 29 Mar 1832 Clinton Co., Ohio Sarah Griggs born 1814/5 NJ. They lived in Green, Clinton Co., Ohio where both are in the 1880 census.
Samuel Gray married 9 Sep 1841 Clinton Co., Ohio Margaret Griggs 4 Aug 1817 PA-12 Dec 1897. They moved to Knox Co., IL and are both buried in Lyons Cemetery, Fairview, Fulton Co., IL.
Noah R. Rinker married 1 Sep 1842 Morgan Co., IN Lydia Ann Griggs 15 Nov 1819 Clinton Co., Ohio- died 7 Oct 1855 East of Centerton, Morgan Co., IN
Thomas Calvin Morgan married 23 Feb 1841 Morgan Co., IN Mary Griggs 29 Mar 1823 Ohio-5 Feb 1907. Both are buried in the Morgan Family Cemetery, Brooklyn, Morgan Co., IN
John David Griggs 8 Mar 1825 Ohio-10 Jun 1849 Centerton Cemetery, Morgan Co., IN

Has anyone found any records of a Griggs family in Clinton Co., Ohio or adjacent counties? Property? In 1921 a grandson located the home of Benjamin and Elizabeth Griggs, about two miles west of Snow Hill Tavern west of New Vienna, Clinton Co., Ohio , which was occupied by a nice family named Cline. Are there any records before 1850? Need the source of Ryerson or Rheinerson, the maiden name of Elizabeth! Were any descendants of this Benjamin and Elizabeth named Benjamin? A Benjamin Griggs married Elizabeth Stewart 7 Mar 1805 1st Presbyterian Church, Middlesex Co., NJ.
Thanks dave.richardson@mindspring.com

This co worker and Dewey were close in the Air Force and one comment he made was that Dewey hated his first name. We can use any information and will supply more after this initial query goes out.
Thank you Morris.

I am still a little confused regarding how the younger Shadrack, and his father Henry (the Henry that d.bet 1820-1827) are "connected" to this much earlier Shadrack and his sons Shadrack and Jim. Is there a "connection" between these two Griggs families, and if so, what "connects them"?

Thank you for your patience,
Debra

Hi Morris.

I have pulled theses records for the 'elder' Henry in Buncombe NC, along with several others.... though not the later ones. I do believe that I have scanned all the ones you are listing here (I may or may not have scanned the one in 1848 for Henry "the younger" as he was not my "focus").... I did pull the record though (read it).

Here is the thing, no where in these records is this "elder" Henry (the Henry who died prior to 1827) listed as James. He is always listed as Henry. Many of his children are identified in these (various) Buncombe NC deed records. & He may have had one other son (per the census listings) The unfortunate thing is that one Buncombe Deed Book is missing and it is the Deed Book that covered the years just before 1827. = I suspect that there were some Henry Griggs (et al) records filed in that time period since it seems that the 'elder' Henry died sometime between 1820 and 1827.

Side NOTE: there were more 'Griigs' deeds filed in Buncombe besides the ones you list.

Side NOTE: As you probably know, James Long was the son-in-law of the 'elder' Henry. See my post above.

It seems to me that some have confused the various Griggs families ("attached" or "combined" them to another). I have been able to document my line to Henry Griggs the elder, the one who died bet 1820-1827 probably in Buncombe NC, but per the census records this Henry was born bet 1765-1775. I know that this (my elder) Henry Griggs was of Rowan CO NC on/about 1790 time period, that he married to Ann Towe there and is listed on the tax list there.
I know that my 'elder' Henry had a son named Shadrack, but this Shadrack could not have served in the Rev War as he was not born until years (decades) later.

I do not know about the Griggs in the (now extinct) State of Franklin, or if there is a connection to my 'elder' Henry Griggs of Buncombe.
I need to learn more about the James Henry & Shadrack Griggs Rev War soldiers. Do yo have more information regarding their families? Or documentation regarding them?

Thank you,
Debra

Re-reading your post.... Are you saying that "JAMES HENRY GRIGGS 1769/1827" was the same as the 'elder' Henry Griggs?

I have never seen a record that lists the 'elder' Henry Griggs as James, but perhaps he was known by two given names. Please confirm if this is the case. Also, my head is trying to piece this together....so I have to wonder... could it be that there were two men .... one James Griggs... one Henry Griggs.... that both married to an Ann.... and some have "combined" these two men as one?

If the 'elder' Henry Griggs was also known as James, I would love to start looking for records referencing an earlier James Griggs. This maybe a piece to this Griggs puzzle.

Side NOTE: I do have some clues that may reference our earlier Griggs family... just have to "piece it together", & You may be able to help me.

Hope to hear from you soon ;-),
Debra

Hello Morris, and great to hear from you.

Since I posted this message, I was able to locate the marriage record for the 'elder' Henry Griggs to Ann Towe, and then found this 'elder' Henry listed on Rowan CO, NC, tax lists (where Henry and Ann Towe were married). I do not know of the other 2 wives named Ann, but do understand that Henry (Jr) (son of Henry the elder) was married to an Anna Miles. Miles (her maiden name) per the death record of one of her sons.

Anyway, it seems that the relict of the 'elder' Henry Griggs was Ann = it seems that she did survive her husband. I believe that you will find her living with Shadrack in the 1830 census, and then I found a deed record [May 1841] which states that Shad sold land, along with [his brother-in-law's father] Abraham Creasman, and this land is where she (Mrs. Ann Griggs) "... lives on currently at this time..." (Buncombe CO NC DBk-20, p.320). Then in 1850, Anna, age 80, seems to be living in the Militia District #587, Rabun CO, Georgia, with her daughter Mary Long.

You asked if Shadrack was listed as heir of the elder Henry Griggs in these deed records ..... the answer is yes he was listed in several of the records deeding land back and forth between the siblings as one of his heirs.

I was hoping that you might have a marriage record for the other two wives of the 'elder' Henry Griggs? Would love to add to my files, but I hestiate to add these additional wives without documentation. &, It does seem rather odd that there were so many Anns about.

I will try to contact you directly and invite you to view some of these records on my private tree. Though not all of these records are uploaded to this tree, I did scan many from the original films, and can forward to you. There are still more records I need to pull.

Also, I do have several James Griggs in my file and several Henry Griggs in my file. Not sure which James Henry Griggs you are referring to. Could you please confirm?

Looking forward to your reply,
Debra

I am searching for someone that has a family connection to Cora Blanche Griggs, daughter of Albert Hadley Griggs & Claretta Wood. She was married to William Frederick Curran, son of Samuel McKenney Curran & Lydia Emma Voos. They were married on November 1, 1900 in Jackson County, Wisconsin.

The reason I am searching for a relation to this family is I have in my possession some family photos. For many years I have been trying to find family connections to the photos I have been collecting over the years. I have always believed that family photos should stay in the family, but of course that does not always happen.

So if you are or you know someone related to this family please feel free to email me at genniegeek@yahoo.com.

Thank You!!

I'm years late to this thread and you may have a good deal of Little information. Cornelia Little Griggs was my great-great-great-aunt. Her father (Henry Little) was a Presbyterian pastor (mostly in Indiana) as were her four brothers (Joseph Brewster, Henry Smith (my g-g-grandfather), George Obadiah, and Charles Harvey), as well as her uncle (Jacob) and three cousins (Joseph, George Allen, and Charles). She married a pastor (Levertt Stearns Griggs, Jr) and her sister Mary Emma married Leverett's brother Joseph Emerson Griggs. The line of pastors has continued to the present as I am a 6th generation pastor. So her moving all over the place with a pastor husband was, for her, par for the course. I have lots of Little info going back to George Little who came to Newbury, MA in 1640, plus some of the matrilineal lines that get us to Cornelia. If you are interested in corresponding, please feel free to email me at danandersonlittle@gmail.com.

I just scrolled forward to the 1820 court minutes and here is the exact transcription from Currituck Co. Court Minutes 1807 - 1930 from Microfilm roll C.030.30002:

This page is Monday May 29, 1820

Ordered that Edmund Dowdy orphan of Thomas Dowdy dec'd. be placed & bound as an apprentice to Charles Griggs until he arrives to the age of 21 years he being now about 13 years of age learn him the trade of a ship carpenter &c.

NOTE: The spelling could be either Griggs or Greggs, it is certainly not a clear "i" or "e" and the "13" could be "15" again, it isn't clear on the microfilm.

As I read the other entries for 1820 I may find something else on Thomas Dowdy that could help clarify who his family was.

I just checked the 1840 Census for Edmund Dowdy. Here is his listing:

1840 Currituck Co. Census
one males between 40 - 50
one male between 5 - 10
one female between 0 - 5
one female between 15 - 20

This particular Dowdy line is not a direct one for me, so I really can't add anything to what you have. I do think this census record pertains to your Edmund. The son between 5 - 10 would most likely be Oliver and the female between 15-20 would be his new wife, Matilda and the female between 0 - 5 is most likely Catherine.
-------------
So far as the children of Charles Griggs, I have eight attributed to the marriage with Sophia Parker:

Charlotte
Thomas
George
William
Samuel
Abbie
Peggy
Charles

And four children to his marriage to Mary Dowdy:

Joseph
Emily
Duplin
Sarah

I don't have a specific date of birth for Charlotte but based on the 1830 Census, I believe she was Charles and Sophia's oldest child born late 1770's. This is assuming this Charlotte is Charles and Sophia's daughter:

1830 Currituck Co. Census
Charlotte Griggs 1 female 50 - 60
1 male 15 - 20
1 male 20 - 30
2 females 20 - 30
-----------
You asked me to look at your tree, but did not give me a link.

You can email me directly at jfstms -@- bellsouth.net (naturally drop the dashes and spaces around the @).
