Glendetta, How are you? I'm a decendant of Robert Lee Scott. He was the younger brother of Rosa "Rosie" Grigsby (formerly Rosa Scott) They were the second and thirde child of Crawford (Crofford) and Jane Scott of Homer Louisiana. I have made contact with Jane Holiday, wife of a Grigsby descendant. Through my work, I have run into a woman by the name of Wanda Grigsby in Ohio. Her husband is a direct Grigsby descendant. My great Grandfather, Robert was two years younger. He, Rosa and there older brother James were the first 3 Scotts born in Louisiana. Crawford and Jane migrated to Louisiana from Georgia. I actually live in metro Atlanta, but was raised in Baltimore MD. I have a tree that shows the family starting at Crawford and Jane. Rosa was their first daughter.

According to the 1900 census for Blount County, Tennessee, Grigsby R. Willocks is married to Eliza A. He is 66, she is 51. They have been married for 31 years at this time and have 5 of 6 children to the marriage living. Both of them and their parents were born in Tennessee. According to my Farr family history Eliza A. is a Farr. Her parents are John Farr and Sarah (Sally) Anderson Crisp. I don't know any info on the Willocks, just the Farrs.

Need Help - Grigsby's of Yell County, Arkansas

I am trying to locate the parents of William Lawrence Grigsby who was born in 1879 in Mississippi. The family moved to Yell County, Arkansas prior to 1900. William married Nancy Frances Norris in 1904 in Yell County, Arkansas. His father's name was said to be Calvin and his mother Jane. The only Calvin and Jane(Malinda) I can find in Yell county was in 1900 but the surname was BIGBEE. Listed in the family was William L age 18 and a boarder Nancy Norris. I had figured that the surname was incorrect in the census, but I can't find Calvin GRIGSBY anywhere !! not before or after 1900. I did find a Calvin Bigby in Alabama in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census(in MS) ...but no Grigsby ! I could seriously use some help !!
Thanks,
Kathy

Hi Frederick, Thank you for your research thus far. I wanted to say that I don't believe that Carrie would be in a book of early marriages; that would be before her time. Also, there is a possibilty that she was not "legally" married (as we know it), therefore not in a book of later marriages either. There's alway tht chance. I am very much interested in knowing, but I also don't want to see you wasting your time. Appreciate all you've done. Thanks!

Hello Barbara,

While at the Webster Parish Library yesterday, I was combing thru a book of early Claiborne parish marriages and found this.
Jessie Grigsby & Rosa Scott 13 Jan 1887 in Claiborne Parish
Clarence N Grigsby & Rosa Lee Rowe 17 Dec 1903 Claib.Parish
I could not remember any other names of you family members. I did search for Carrie and both of her husbans and did not find her in either the book of early Claiborne parish marriages or the book of Webster parish Mariages from 1871 thru 1901. Next time I am at the Webster Parish Court house I will search the original Webster parish books of marriages that go from the early 1870's when Webster Parish was formed to presant day. She may be in these.

Hello Frederick,
Carrie was born, raised, died Claiborne Parish 1897-1938, as was her 1st husband Henry Lee Harris 1901-1924 (my grandfather). Her name is pronouched Carrie, but sometimes on Ancestry I've seen it spelled Corrie or Carry. Her second husband was John Wesley Martin 1897-1982. Haven't been able to find marriage license on either but I've only checked Ancestry. Thanks for any help. I checked your slave names, but Sophie(Sofie)Lambert her first slave name and Sophie Grigsby 1835-1937 was not on the list and no one her age, However there was a old women Sallie who could have been her mother/grandmother? Sophie had a daughter named Sallie. FYI--- its been noted that Sophie was born in Virginia. Thanks again for any help!

Glendetta,
I was going back thru the 1880 Louisiana census for 3rd ward, Claiborne Parish and found Sophie Lambert with her family. I know you probably have seen this but I posted some of it any way. Maby Darbie Steel is Dobbin and Luvenia is Surenia

Sophia Lambert F 35
Child Jessee Lambert M 16
Child Dobbin Lambert M 14 (1866)
Child Frank Lambert M 8
Child Surenia Lambert F 5
Child Sally Lambert F 3
Child Clarance Lambert M 8M
.
I also found Sophie living with her son in 1930 and Mary Lou in I think 19oo or 1910. But it put Mary Lou birthday around 1884. I can post each house hold if you need them.
Frederick

Being that my Carrie was born in 1897 and passed in the spring of 1938 I don't believe this would be her, however, I will try and get her death certificate as you suggested because I've had a hard time finding it on my own.
Barbara,
I was the site for Louisiana Death certificates today and ran upon a Carrie Grigsby, she died oct. 31 1917 at the age of 37 in Webster Parish, is this your Carrie? If so you can order her death certificate for only 5 dollars. I have gotten several of my relatives this way. You would be suprised at the info you can gain. Also I just started a new thread under Claiborne Parish, Louisiana called S. M. Grigsby slave records. I don't know if any of these slaves are yours, but you might want to check it out. I will continue to post them as I find them.
Frederick

Would love to know more about Luvenia.
I'm pretty much stuck where you are in terms of where to research next, getting into the mid 1800's which is what I'm really curious about. My initial goal was to find a photo of my grandmother (Carrie Grigsby Harris Martin) who passed away before I was born; no luck so far but I haven't given up.
I have a cousin in Minden who owns abdress shop there, Louella Thomas, you might know her.
Hello Frederick,

I just recently saw your post to Glendetta. As you will see on the message board I too am a decendant of Sophie Grigsby as she was my paternal great great grandmother. Jesse Grigsby Sr. her eldest, was my great grandfather and his daughter Carrie Grigsby Harris Martin whom I've been trying to find a photograph of was my grandmother.
I am curious as to which Jesse you are speaking of who passed away recently, as we have no knowledge of that. I do know that Jesse Jr.(Hamp) passed many years ago.
It is good to know something about Luvenia. Would you know anything about Sophie's other children; Sally,Darbie Steel, Bettie,Frank and Mary Lou Lambert? I would love to hear from you.
Barbara

Glendetta,

The Robert Mack that was the imformant on Sophie Grigsby death certificate was my Great grand mother's (Rosie Mack-Crow-Roe) brother. He did not actually know his grandmother's age at the time of her death, even thouth he guessed her age at 115 years old. I grew up around him, we use to take trips to Kansas City in the summertime to visit his brothers(Columbus Mack,Jessie Jacob, and Horace Roe) when I was just a kid. I remember him telling us jokes and have us children looking for a specific sign all the way to KC, even though he knew there was no such sign.

Helly Glendetta,
Let me introduce my self. I am Frederick, a native African American of Minden and I too am a decendant from Sophie Grigsby, her daughter Luvenia Grigsby, was my great, great, grand mother. I was wondering where did you get your information on Sophie from. Most of it is correct, but there are a few things that need verifying. I have a copy of her death certificate and access to all the census in Webster and Claiborne Parishes. Also I have visited Mt Pisgh CME several times. I also have talked to Jesse Grigsby that use to be incharge of the cemetary at Mt. Pisgh before he died a few years ago, even though he is not the Jesse you are refuring to above. Contact me and maby we can compare notes. I have taken most of my lines back to the early 1800's, but after that as you probably know, it gets hard. I am in the stage wher you have to start viewing wills, slave bill of sales, and anything else I can get my hand on.

I don't know what you would like to know. Please let me know what that might be. I don't have much on that side of the family.
If we have emailed in the past I don't recall it. Sorry to have not seen your message for 8 years. Ancestry generally notifies me but I don't recall seeing your message before.
