My husband's third great grandfather was James Grimes. I have not been able to find out who he married or the route he took to get to New Marion, IN. I was excited to see you know who he married. My husband visited Versailles, IN and found information there as to where he is buried. My father-in-law was born in New Marion and moved to West Union, IA.

GRIMES (or GORMLEY) from Armagh, mid-19th century

Am seeking information about James GRIMES (or GORMLEY), from Co Armagh, possibly from Tynan, and his son Patrick GRIMES who eventually settled in Dover, NH in 1866. Patrick was a nephew of Bernard McQUADE, from Glaslough, Co Monaghan, and the latter's son, Charles McQUADE, settled in Newburyport, MA, where he was a baker (c. 1870) Patrick Grimes married Margaret Cunningham in 1875.

Christina
This sounds extremely familiar. I have the cultivator's passenger list where Patrick and James list themselves as Patrick and James Gormley; the date is May 26, 1864. However, my research to date tells me that they could be father and son (James is 56 and Patrick is 25)but not brothers by any stretch, and that their parents are James Grimes and Catherine (Trainor) Grimes of Co Armagh. There is a longstanding family tradition that they were accompanied by a man named Carroll. According to that tradition, Mr.Carroll urged them to sell their farm to pay their passage and promised that he would supply any shortfall they might face in financing the trip. PLEASE contact me if and when you read this message.

Hello,
I see it has been a long time since anyone has made a post. None the less William Grimes (1707-1762) is my 4th Great Grandfather. It is said he was born in Dublin, Ireland. I have not been able to fine anything to confirm this. It is believed he came to the US and settled in N.C. He married in 1750, had 3 sons (John, Luke and William). They then moved to Maury County Tennessee were he died in 1762. My line goes from William to John to William B. to Henry Murray to David Commodore born in Lewis County to my father Garland who also born in Lewis County along with my uncles and aunts and moved to Gibson county were I live.
The information on his parents, which you have listed, is news to me! Do you have a birth place for William or Delpha? Or how i might access your downline. I have some stories (not really geniological help) written down my my Aunt, Cora Grimes Jordan, if you are interested. Will have to dig out of a box, as we have recently moved.
Thanks!
YES, As my Great Grandmother ELLEN VIRGINIA GRAHAM SULLIVAN 1837-1916 was daughter of John Graham 1801-1856 a son of Berrymen Graham & Margaret Corum.

It appears that the lands his father found to have sold after death of Berryman may have been a parcel of the early Granted Lands that he may have leased to his son.

Not many written records still remain as Berryman was born at the end of the AM Rev. War. The Will of William Graryham, Sr. was recorded in Caswell County, NC and dated June 20, 1807.

BERRYMAN Graham is reported to have died before his father William deceased, and, was not named as a survivor child in that Will of 1807. Many researchers report Berryman Graham born abt 1780 died before 13th of April 1802 in Caswell County, NC.

It is doubtful Berryman's younger brother named William in the WILL of 1807 is parent father of Berryman Graham who had a son JOHN on Christmas Day 1801.

Caswell North Carolina has a recorded Will of William.
The Will of William Graryham, Sr. was recorded in Caswell County, NC and dated June 20, 1807.
It lists daughters: Charity Allen Davis, Lidda Elmore, and heirs of Polly Elmore;
Sons: Edward, William, George, John and Peter;
Grandson: Herrington Grayham;
negroe woman Venus to be freed from service and to have 15 acres of land.
Executors: Son John, William Weatherford, Thomas Weatherford.
Witnesses: Wm Morgan, James Murphey.
Provided on oath of William Morgan.
> Caswell Co. NC Will Book F, page 70.

This WILL tells me that a William GRAHAM (regardless of spelling on the Will) Caswell County, NC did have A known Graham family in 1800's. In addition the BERRYMAN Graham is reported to have died before his father William deceased, and, was not named as a survivor child in that Will of 1807. Many researchers report Berryman Graham born abt 1780 died before 13th of April 1802 in Caswell County, NC.

This Berryman was born ca 1780 and was married to a Margaret Corum (their son was John Graham ).
There are deeds in the Caswell County books showing "William Graham conveying the land of Berryman Graham deceased", on Hogan's Creek.
This wife Margaret Corum Graham is referred to as "Peggy" in later guardianship accounts.

The 1801 son of BERRYMAN Graham named "JOHN Graham" was born Christmas Day 25 December 1801 NC and John died a farmer on 16th September 1856 living at Ulman, Miller County, MO. His wife died later years 1895 same location. She was born 7th June 1807 on border lands of KY.

This son JOHN is not the same son of William Graryham, Sr. that deceased in 1807. This JOHN 1801 is his Grandson.

Who is the parent of William Graham, Sr.???

Some early Graham's can be found:
> Names of early Granters in Fauquier/Loudoun Co.VA
> John Graham [sic]/Grant )28 Jul 1742- 349a Goose Cr, below, adj Chinn.
>
> John Grant & John Crump - 21 Nov 1740 - 406a Marsh Run

SHERRY GRIMES BURNS

After 4 year old EMMA MAY SHERRY's dad was shot and killed in a bar room brawl in 1887, she was given to a family that was traveling through Wasco County, Oregon, so she could have a better life. Emma May married prior to 1900 to George A. Burns in California, and in later years she visited her biological siblings in Oregon. When Emma May died in Fresno, California in 1943 it listed her father's surname as GRIMES and her mother's surname as BELL. I would like to make contact with the GRIMES/BELL family as I do not know her "adopted" parents' given names inorder to do further research.

Re: John C. Grimes of PA b1817?

Hi,
It's been 10 yrs since your message but I was wondering if you completed your search on John C Grimes? I am a relative of the Ridenours in Woodbury, Bedford, PA and I am interested in his wife, Sarah Ridenour. We are having trouble tracing a Henry Ridenour, born 1812, in Franklin possibly, moving to the Woodbury area in the 1830's per tax records. Sarah could be his cousin or sister.

Susan

Re: Hardin, CO TN Grimes

I was in the Hardin County Library on Tuesday. The lady working there let me look at a book about Grimes. I can't quote any of the details and names but it was written by John Grimes. One thing that I did notice was one of the families of Grimes moved from Hardin County to Vesta and then Charleston, Arkansas. This was in the late 1800's.
The lady in the library is Connie Lewis. Her email is:
clewis_hardin1@bellsouth.net
There is also a genealogy contact on the Hardin County Historical website by the name of Grimes. I've emailed him 3 times and he has responded one time.
Don't know if this is any help.
David Crotts
