Benj, TAYLOR/ Eliz. GRINNELL, m. 1784 Little Compton, RI

Hi,

I am trying to ascertain whether the Benjamin TAYLOR born 8 January 1761 at Little Compton, Newport Co., RI to William TAYLOR and Deborah GRAY might be the same Benjamin Taylor who died sometime in the late 1820's in the Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York, after a brief stay in Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., New York.

The Benjamin Taylor born 1761 at Little Compton married Elizabeth GRINNELL at Little Compton on 23 December 1784 according to vital records.

There is on record the death of a Benjamin Taylor at Hopkinton, RI on 11 August 1803 and I have seen several online family trees that assume this is the son of William & Deborah. I think the reason why researchers have made this assumption is because William Taylor did not mention his son Benjamin in his will -- this could mean Benjamin was dead, but it could also mean Benjamin no longer lived in the area so there was no point leaving him a legacy as he wouldn't be able to claim it.

In fact, I have seen evidence that the Benjamin who died in 1803 in Hopkinton was actually the son of Humphrey TAYLOR and Martha WOOD who lived at Hopkinton; and that Benjamin was married to a different woman, not Elizabeth GRINNELL.

So that leaves Benjamin Taylor, husband of Elizabeth Grinnell and son of William & Deborah unaccounted for in the death records of Rhode Island to my knowledge.

So....

In Jefferson County, New York, a Benjamin Taylor born around the early 1760s according to census estimates shows up in the 1820 census, along with a Peter Taylor born about 1765, and a Richard Taylor born about 1751. This Benjamin Taylor's descendants reported that their father was born in Rhode Island.

Beforehand, this Benjamin Taylor was living from at least 1794 until after 1810 in Amsterdamn, Montgomery Co., New York next door to John Pearce ALLIN, who had moved there from Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, a son of James ALLEN and Martha PEARCE (who also moved from Prudence Island to Amsterdam).

James Allen and Martha Pearce had a son Cyrus Allen, born 1765 at Portsmouth, a sailor, who died in 1799. Before he died, he married Juliana A. TAYLOR, born about 1771 in Rhode Island, and they had a son named Cyrus Allen. After Cyrus Sr.'s death, Juliana married Benjamin PRYOR. Interestingly, Benjamin PRYOR and Juliana TAYLOR moved to Town of Brownville, Jefferson Co., New York as well, where they died. One online researcher has even identified Juliana as the daughter of the Richard TAYLOR born 1751 in Rhode Island who was enumerated near Benjamin in the censuses of Brownville (they cite no source however).

Add to this mix that Peter TAYLOR, aforementioned, appears in the censues of both Amsterdam and Brownville next to Bejmain Taylor. The name Peter is significant because it was the name of another son of William and Deborah. And I find two Peter Taylors, one fitting the age the man in Amsterdam and Browville, living on Prudence Island, Town of Portsmouth, Newport Co., RI, next to an ALLIN family in the 1790 census -- the same ALLIN family that ends up in Amsterdam, New York!

All of this evidence suggests that:
- there was a close relationship between Benjamin, Richard and Peter Taylor
- these Taylors were from Rhode Island
- these Taylors were closely associated to the ALLEN / ALLIN family of Prudence Island, town of Portsmouth

From what I can discover online, the Taylors of Prudence Island were from the same family as the Taylors of Little Compton. Which leads me back to my original question:

Could Benjamin Taylor of Amsterdam and Brownville be the son of William Taylor & Deborah Gray born in 1761 whose death is not recorded in Rhode Island? If they weren't his parents, then who?

Further, how are Peter and Richard related? Brothers, cousins or uncles?

I would appreciate any and all help! Including names of researchers both free or for hire that could dig into the Little Compton and Portsmouth records to answer these questions.

Thanks!
Mark

Katie, I hope by now you have found your father. I was his next wife after he and your mother were divorced. We had moved to Arizona in the 80's. We have been divorced for many years. He has been living in Phoenix and was married and divorced at least 3 more times since then. I am trying to find him myself. He called me a few years ago to find out why I never changed my name. He told me at that time he was ill. I'm not sure he survived or not. If you find out anything further, would you kindly email me at grinnellarlene@ymail.com. I would really appreciate it. Good luck in your search. Arlene

Electa Grinnell and Joshua Lewis are not the parents of Delecta Barbour who married John Case Lewis. This should seem obvious from the statement itself! John was their son and Delecta a daughter-in-law. My Great great great grandfather Daniel G. Lewis was also a son of Electa and Joshua Lewis III. Ancestry has it wrong!

John DOWD/DOWDE b. 1690 in Guilford, New Haven CT on 11 Nov 1726.

Son Peleg DOUD was b. 10 Feb 1733 in CT.

The 1997 Grinnell book lists 3 children, but I have 6 mentioned: John, Samuel, Peleg, Elizabeth, Rebecca and Mary. I guess the daughters were not listed originally.
Hello - I'm stuck in my research, and need help from the Grinnells. I need to know if Rebecca Grinnell married John Doud/Dowd in 1736 (Rhode Island), or not. I have info that they were married, but then my direct ancestor, their son Peleg, was supposedly born in 1734, two years before their marriage. Does anyone have clear information on this?

Basically - did Rebecca Grinnell ever marry John Doud/Dowd?

Thank you!
Corinne Pierson

James's mother, Eunice Jones Grinnell,b.c 1796., m.1814, in Northville, Fulton, NY, is my interest. My ancestor, John Brownell was from Northville, and married 2nd,sometime between 1820 & 1823, Frances Mariah Jones, b. c. 1800. I am wondering if they might have been sisters. If so, the Brownell/Grinnell connections might have gone back a generation further. There was also a Harvey Jones in Northville in 1860. John Brownell's father may have been connected to Washington, Dutchess Cty. From same area was an Elias Jones, who had a grandson, Christopher Harvey Jones who would have been 43 in 1860...familes may have migrated along same routes? Do you know anything about Eunice's family?

Many of the early families got land grants in Michigan due to the War of 1812 as was many other areas including western NY from the Rev. War land grants. Many of the same families migrated together to Western NY then onto Michigan. Some in the families got land grants... others moved nearby. It wasn't just Grinnell's but many many early American families.

There's a lot of history already written about the migrations into Michigan and why.

Still looking for someone in this line. I'd prefer someone that's doing their genealogy or the person in the line that is serious about it to receive what I have. If I'm not contacted I'll probably end up donating it to an Eaton County or Bellevue Historical type society or museum. I'd at least like contact so someone in the line knows about it and can get information then donate it.

Amazing how many Grinnell's born in NY moved to MI. My Allen was born Aug 1812 in Albany, NY and died in June 1893 in Ottawa, MI. No idea who Allen's parents were. On his death record it says Harvey & Esther but that may be wrong since I have never found a Harvey. MI must have offer something. Good Luck in your search.
Sandy

Oh ya - and I only remember this one photograph my mom had hidden in her sock draw... I remember asking her who it was once and she said it wasn't my business... later I think I found out it was you - from what I remember the girl had long brown hair possibly brown eyes and like pink pj's and was around 5 years old. Which would be accurate if it was around my birth and I'm 30 now.

I never found any photos of my father - or at least I don't think I did. Which you'd think a relative somewhere would have just one.

Also recently my mom opened up about my real dad and said he was an arrogant guy. Apparently the day she went into labor with me he said he needed to take 'you' to school and my mom was pretty sure that she was going to have me ASAP - and he assured her that 'oh I've been thru this before you'll be fine for another 10 hours' - sure enough right as he got back home after taking his sweet time and got me to the hospital (apparently him swearing all the way) in Sanford, ME (they lived in Rochester, NH at the time) I was ready to come out. lol

And that is all I know about him. And apparently I look somewhat like him - even though I look like my mom and some people told me I look like my dad (the one who raised me - which i always had a chuckle about because they didn' tknow).

Hi, I'm the original poster... and just noticed this posting today when I was searching for some family history I needed for a genome kit I just bought (23andme). I know, it's been 2 years since you wrote that but who knows maybe you'll respond. I tried googling your name and found that there is a Laura Ricci (Grinnell) age 35 in California and Washington State. As it so happens I just moved out to California a month ago.

So if you do read this you can write to this email: ubiquitousfizz@gmail.com

James John Grinnell 1831-1909 (son of Isaiah and Eunice Grinnell) married Sarah Ann Corey (daughter of Abram T. & Susan C. (Bates) Corey). To our knowledge James & Sarah had six children: Ella, Edward, Minnie, Lee, Ida & Seymour. Some of these children married into the Manning, Brownell, Smith & Chrisite families. James and Sarah appear to have lived their lifetimes in the Fulton County, NY area, last known residence was in Gloversville.
Remington Grinnel b. 1738

Remington Grinnel (Grenal)(b. 1738) moved to the Elizabeth Islands with his parents in the 1750s or earlier. He is listed in Chilmark, MA in 1771. He had several children by his unknown 1st wife in the 1760s. The grave stone of one of his decendents, born 1805, states the decendent was "of indian decent". This unknown wife seems the best candidate for the indian blood. What resources are available to help me investigate this.

I know that your message is 8 years old, and I don't know how this is going to get to you, but here goes. I am Laura Ricci (Grinnell is my maiden name) and I think that we are definitely related! I had this feeling that I needed to Google my dad, Robert Paul Grinnell. I don't know why. When I was a kid, I remember my dad's second wife, Pam, had a baby girl, named Katie, but I was only 5 or 6, so I didn't make the connection. Some time later, after they divorced and we moved away, my grandmother told me that Katie was my half-sister and that my dad walked away. I've thought about you, often, but never knew how to even begin to look for you. If you want to contact me, respond to this posting and I'll send you my e-mail address. =o]

Charles is my great-granduncle.

A full account of this tragedy was published on the April 5, 1911 edition of the Fitchburg (MA) Daily Sentinel. The obituary, with a lot of excellent genealogical information, was published within a day or two in either direction of the April 5, 1911 article.

He was the son of Robert Jason and Sarah Lucretia (Sawtell) Grinnell, and was one of 13 children. He was born 5 Nov 1865 at Fall River, Bristol, MA (cert. copy of birth certificate on file). He married Jenny M. Francis b. 1869 in NH (burial records, Forest Hill Cem., Fitchburg, MA), on 5 Jun 1888 at Providence, Providence, RI (obituary, Fitchburg (MA) Daily Sentinel--date unknown--I only have a xerox copy of the clipping). They had no children. Charles, a Lieutenant with the Fitchburg (MA) Fire Dept., died 4 Apr. 1911 due to injuries sustained while fighting an industrial fire.

Jenny died 25 Mar 1959, Jaffrey, Hillsborough, NH, and is buried next to Charles at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg, Worcester, MA (xerox copy of burial plot record from cemetery).

Grinnells in Michigan

I'm looking for info on my dad's dad, Irving Julius Grinnell he died when my dad was 2. His 2 daughters from a previous marrage died when he was 9 in a car accident. His mother (Doris Remington Grinnell Davis) had a half sister and brother from another Grinnell family Edith Stemm and Kenneth Grinnell, niether had children, but dad called their father grandpa. I remember as a little girl some family get togethers in Ioina and Grand Ledge. And Doris and Irving are buried outside of Portland. Our family moved to Alaska in 1969 so I have no idea what has happened to any of them. I do remember a family called Jenkins that we use to visit they had 2 little chihuahuas and 1 son that I know of. It was a long time ago, I'm 54 now with my own grandkids and since I love history I've been sharing what I know of Jonathan and Abigail. I know Edith had some confederate money from someone on her side of the Grinnell family and I'd like to know who that was, since I love Civil War history the most. Can anyone help me?
Thomas Grinnell m. Sarah Ann Thompson Oakland Co. MI 1852

In researching my THOMPSON line, I came upon this marriage certificate, for my Sarah Thompson. Thomas and Sarah were married 23 May, 1852 in Rose Twp. Oakland County, MI.

Sarah is the daughter of Robert Thompson and his wife Surrissa (several spellings for her name are documented) Lockwood Thompson. Other children were: Polly, (Sarah-her place in line), Joseph, Smith and Ellen.

The Thompson family lived in Oakland Co. moving here from Gaines Twp. Orleans Co. NY. After the 1850 census for Oakland Co., the majority of the family can be found in Marcellus Twp, Cass Co. MI.

I can find nothing on either Thomas or Sarah Ann Grinnell.

Does anyone know anything on this couple?

Thank you.

MANY THANKS for the response. John Druger and his family is one of the children of Albert and Mary that I have found very little information on. John's sister, Mary Elizabeth, was my grandmother.

Would you be interested in sharing information with me? If so, please contact me at dmedwards@mchsi.com.

- Donna

What a small world it is! Do you have any old photos that would have John Smith Grinnell in them? Even if you have some where you don't know the people, I know Harry and Cecil Grinnell if I see them? My mom loved Uncle Gibb, as she called him, dearly. He saved her life when she was little, so he was always "Larger than Life".

RE living relatives of Margaret Ames and Morris Grinnell...I am John Smith's great-granddaughter, and the granddaughter of his daughter, Gladys. I am familiar with the whereabouts and the descendants of Ethel and Gladys Grinnell. Gilbert did not have any children.

John Smith Grinnell was my great-grandfather. My grandmother was his daughter, Gladys. I remember her telling me about her brother, Harry, and the accident. I am almost positive that Ethel, their sister, named her son after him, and that would be Harry Nesbit. Although they died when I was relatively young, I also knew Aunt Ethel and Uncle "Gibbie" (Gilbert).

Looking for descendants of Grinnell's of Newark, NJ. I believe Annie Grinnell was Annie O'Donnell of Newark. Her mother was Mary O'Donnell, and ran a boarding house.
Mary's other children were: Johnnie, Mary Ellen, Lizzie, Katie.

Mary's cousin was my grandmother Catherine Dwyer Kerwin, originally from Sligo, Ireland.

Please contact me with any info about this family. Thanks, Jim

I am a descendant of Daniel Grinnell. Have you ever visited the Grinnellfamily.org website? The latest one has some awesome pictures of the churches in England where Rose and matthew got married (one of the churches). I haven't been to RI. Would you so kind as to send me some pictures? Have you gone to any reunions? Last year it was in Massachusetts which is supposed to be the beginning of the Grinnell family. Hope to hear from you soon.

Bonnie Schneiderman
