Hi Craig,

I'm very interested in learning more about the early Grinsteads in Virginia. My line is William - William - William- John - John - John - Elizabeth Grinstead Jackson. Any information you can share would be very much appreciated! I'm also curious if you have any information about William I's parents in England. Any corrected dates are also appreciated.

Thank you!

Unfortunately, I haven't yet completed the book, although I am still working towards its completion. I am, however, happy to share any information that you may want on a specific Grinstead line and I have a considerable amount of information and documents that I can share. Most of the 'new' or corrected Grinstead family information not found in the original Grinstead book comes from the earliest generations - the first five generations. Most of the later information corrects dates and adds children and spouses.
Craig

According to my findings, I am the 3rd cousin 10X removed of Elizabeth Key thru my relative, Matthew Key (1567-1637)who was Thomas Key's (b. 1575?)first cousin. I find her story fascinating and find it most interesting that some Trees show her as the "wife" of Thomas. These are people like my 100 year old aunt who can't believe that a relative of hers would have a black child. My questions: was she called "Black Bess"? And was Agnes her mother? If not, do you know the answers? Thanks, Patsy Oliver, Modesto, CA.

I am interested in this as well, but if there is new information that corrects errors in the original book I'd be interested in that as well (perhaps copies of wills, etc). My 4th great-grandmother was Melissa Catherine Grinstead, daughter of Thomas Grinstead and Mary Petrie. She was born in Warren County, Kentucky in 1843. I'm interested to see her connection with William Grinstead and Elizabeth Key.

Patrick Jones
pljones96@gmail.com

Re: Grinsteads in Barren Co KY

Hello from Michigan. My interest in Grinstead is minimal. My father's stepfather was Claude Hall Johnson b. Barren Co KY. Through census information, I found his father as George W. Johnson b. Feb 1857 KY farmer and wife Cornelia on 1900 Census m. at age 19 still living in Barren Co KY. Cornelia married at age 17, died betw 1920 and 1930 census.

Here is the question: I found Geo W Johnson all the way back to the 1860 census age 4 in Barren Co KY under parents Nathan T. Johnson age 40 and wife Martha age 37. So many other families show her as Martha Grinstead but their children's names do not match up with the names on the 1850 thru 1880. The 1880 Census shows my Geo W age 23 still at home with his parents as a farmer.

Does your information on Martha Grinstead show her married to Nathan T. Johnson? Here are their children's names as I see it, all of Barren Co KY on the census:

1 Catharine E b. ~1841 KY
2 Sarah F b. ~1843 KY
3 Virgil McKnight b. Aug 1844 KY dec. 06-16-1922 KY
4 Amanda J. b. ~1848 KY
5 Tolbert F. b. Jan 1849 KY
6 Mary Ellen b. ~1851 KY
7 Minerva S. b. ~1853 KY
8 Malissa D. b. ~1855 KY
9 George W. b. Feb 1857 KY his son: Claude Hall Johnson is my Father's stepfather married to Dorothy Elizabeth (Moore) Caldwell. They met in Oak Park IL
10 Martha A. b. ~1858 KY
11 Louisa B. b. ~1859 KY
12 Clarence E. b. Jan 1863 KY

I noticed on the 1820 Census for Glasgow, Barren Co KY a listing for Henry Grinstead. Among other children, there is a mark for a female under 10 which would match Martha's age.

Also, on the 1850 census Glasgow, Barren Co KY there is a Reuben and Nancy Grinstead and family. He is a wagon maker; and on the same page a William Grinstead and family who is also a wagon maker. My Nathan T. Johnson was also a wagon maker.

What do you think? Do you have any info that backs up my Martha Johnson as a Grinstead married to Nathan T. Johnson of Barren Co KY? My Father can only add that he was from a large family and from Glasgow KY.

Janice (Caldwell) Samuelson

I would appreciate any help on knowing if this Martha married to Nathan Johnson is actually a Grinstead.

Indian Blood?

My great-grandmother, Charlene Eichenberger Bryant, told the story that our family had Indian blood. Unfortunately, we do not know exactly where the blood came from, and she died before she could say exactly where.

My grandfather(her son) believes that the blood comes from her mother, Jessie Jacks(Jacques) Grinstead Eichenberger, and further from her mother, Rosa Lee Jacks(Jacques) Grinstead.
Charlene and Jessie were both born in Noble, Oklahoma (Indian Territory) and Rosa was born in Rockwall, Texas.

I'm not really sure if the Indians in that area kept records of anything, because we certainly don't have any records of it, other than my great-grandmother's word. My grandfather believes that he remembers a woman named Sadie Sue from his mother's family, who was "more Indian than the rest." I assume her mother, or grandmother was a full, but I'm not quite sure who she is.

If anyone has any idea about this and could help me, I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!
Thank you,
Allison
Thank you for all of your research. I am from the Grinstead family through Elizabeth and Williams son, William. My Great Grandmother was Verlie Grinstead and lived in Texas. I have been spending time researching my ancestors and am constantly amazed at what I find. I would love to know if you have finished your book. My mom is going to England in October and is going to research the Grinsteads. Please let me know if you have any information about William Grinsteads family in England.
I can be reached at sbcreeden@comcast.net
Thank you again, Susan

I've double checked this and I am not sure this is my branch of the Grinsteads. My William was born in Hawarden, father John mother Jane Wright. I cant see that we are in the lineage with Jacqueline and co.
There are so many Johns and 2 williams so I must admit to being somewhat causious at present.
Grateful for any advice.
Rgds Stephen

I have to admit I am a bit non plussed as to whether J&J had George Wright, Jaqualine and others. Although I am fairly certain that George & Mary Wright were Williams maternal grandparents.
My research shows the children as:- Mary 1827, Susan 1836, William 1892 and James 1839. I have come across the other names but cant with 100% certainty. I'm having problems verifying which family is the correct one :( Lets see if we can cooperate on this, any suggestions?

I am very interested in the information you have that you have documentation for. As for me I have one specific documentation problem that must be solved before I am sure which line I come from. Perhaps you know something of this. I have documentation for my ancestor Reuben Grinstead in Kentucky. He was born about 1817 and the first documented event was his marriage to Nancy Wilson. I believe his father was James II but these isn't any proof. If I can establish this connection there will be documentation back to the 1600s. It appears however that he may have been born during the journey to Kentucky from Virginia. Any thoughts or dare I presume "documentation". I know it is possible I just haven't made any connection yet.
