Mary Ann Taylor Grist

I am looking for descendants of Mary Ann Taylor Grist known as Polly, born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire in 1867 and died in South Africa about 1950. I believe Mary Ann emigrated to South Africa sometime after 1901. I know she married and I can only assume she married in South Africa as I am unable to find a registration of her marriage in the UK. Mary Ann had two children that I know of, Gertrude and Arthur. The children visited the UK in about 1950 as I think they had to return early because of their mothers illness. I believe it's possible her family returned to the UK when South Africa had it problems.

Mary Ann's parents were Jehu (aka John) and Mary Ann Grist from Trowbridge, Wiltshire. She also had a sister Eliza Laura (known as Lolly) who died in 1951 in Trowbridge.

My Grist family came from Wiltshire but I haven't been able to get back further than Alfred Fillis Grist b abt 1812 Bradford. He married Elizabeth ...? in Bradford and had their first child William Arthur Fillis Grist in 1834 before moving to Middlesex. Do they fit with your family? The Fillis seems to be an unofficial hyphenation with Grist as all their children had it and some in subsequent generations too. I haven't yet found where the Fillis comes into the family.

I live 18 miles from Grist Flat(s) in Mehoopany, Wyoming County, PA.

Seeing that your guy had a brother named Willis Grist suggests to me that he may be a brother to my gr-gr-grandfather Rev. John Grist, who was the son of an older Willis Grist. John Grist's brother Micajah "Mike" Grist was in Cobb County. John was in Cherokee and later Paulding Co. GA. John married into the Wofford family which produced many Methodist ministers in SC (including the namesake of Wofford College in Spartanburg SC).

Hello,
Simon Grist is the brother of my great-grandmother;Nancy Melvina Grist. She was born in Fayette Co., IN near Nulltown in 1860. Her mother was Matilda Pritchard. Her father was Samuel. I am unsure of the date, but Nancy married Joseph Graham-son of Hezekiah Graham b. 1799 PA, d. 1869 Rush Co., IN. I am therefore related to the Lake family by way of Nancy's brother Samuel b.about 1865. Young Samuel & his wife Hattie had a daughter named Cleo, she married Frank Lake. Their children were Jim & Virgil. James (I new him as Jim) died 2003, Virgil 1982, & mother Cleo 1972. Frank died in the 1920s. He is listed on the 1920 census but not the 1930 census. I know that I kind of gave more info than you asked for but I thought that it may be helpful to you & others. Please let me know if we are talking about the same people.- Best Wishes, Jerry F. Graham

Dear Shelly,
I just saw your post and am interested in what you have found. I recently found a Simon Grist named in a listing of Pitt County deed abstracts by Ellison and posted by Bill Kittrell. Simon is mentioned in 1782 in Book G, page 411 (James Bonn and John Cowper). There are other Grist men also listed as grantees, former owners, chain bearers, grantors, and witnesses. I am going to change my area of search for Simon and his parents and siblings to North Carolins and see what I come up with. I guessed he might have been born in SC. The one mention of Simon Grist (my line) is in the will of John Grist (b 1717 - d 1793) in Rowan Co, NC. He leaves son Benjamin 1/3 of the plantation and g-son 1/3 of the plantation. Named wife, Elizabeth, children, Benjamin John, & William, g-son, Simon (of Spartanburg).

Linda,
Does your Grist line connect with the Grists in Cherokee, Cobb, and Paulding Co. My grandfather Wadsworth's mother was Manda Tallulah Grist b. 1865 (tombstone says 1871 but she was 5 years old on 1870 census). She was dau of Rev. John Grist and Elizabeth Wofford.
Lamar Wadsworth

If anyone is still working on this... my wife is apparently descended from Julia Grist (1857-1920) of North Carolina (mostly in Robeson). She first married Jack or Zack Plummer c1874, then Nathan Allen in 1908. Her parents were Jacob and Julia Peterson Grist, of whom I know nothing more at this point. Any help appreciated.

There is an Eleanor Foot Gibbons, born in Winsley, Wilts on 7 Aug 1808. Winsley is very near Bradford, so might be her. I found this by searching www.familysearch.org. Her marraige to Alfred Tullis Grist is also on that site if you search using his name. They were married on 18 Feb 1833 at Westwood, Wilts. Eleanor's parents seem to be Edward Gibbons and Priscilla.
Regards
Jill

There was an Absolum Grist who was born (unknown date) in Witcombeth, Somerset, England. He was married to Elizabeth Grist, born 16 Feb 1829 at Alvechurch, Worcester, England. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, born 9 Dec. 1865. The family lived in Philadelphia. An 1880 census states that Absolum ran an "Eating House"...

They were members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. Later, they were possibly affiliated with a church headed by Charles B. Thompson.

I need more info on him. Can anyone help?

Heather i know that this is probably a really big favour to ask but i am really stuck on tracing my family tree. My g g mother Mary ann Masters died in Australia in 1900 ref 12118. I have census's for her and her husband Charles until 1891. I cannot find a ship or how they arrived in Australia. If they both came or perhaps Charles died in England beforehand. There is no mention in the family of if Charles came and if Mary Ann came alone. Maryann would have been 58 in 1891 census and charles 57. Any ideas would be really appreciated.
jill
