Information in "Biographical review : this volume contains biographical sketches of the leading citizens of Hampden County, Massachusetts" allows me to reasonably conclude that Abel Griswold, b. in Windsor, Conn is the father of Virgil Griswold, b. in Southampton, MA March 29 1807, and that his mother is Deidamia Easton. Just closing the loop on this one.

The other was born in 1770 and married Ann Roper.

I hope Ashael is right so I can focus on updating the family tree accurately.

Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!!

I am very interested in the posts made to Becky's query. I am the great granddaughter of Philander and Alice Griswold who married in 1897 in Ontario, Canada. Philander's father was Willard Griswold born 1840 in Quebec, Canada. Willard Griswold married Anne Sloan in 1864 in Ontario, Canada. Willard's parents were Samuel (born abt 1820) and Mary who seemed to come from the USA to Quebec for an unknown reason. However, I do know that Willard's father, Samuel died in New York (I am still working on this part). At some point Samuel must have returned to the United States as it seems he was born there. I had thought of a UELoyalist connection but the timing is off. Does anyone have any further information about this Canadian/US connection?

I truly appreciate your help on this Griswold family. While pursuing the Willard Griswold name, I came across this family & strongly suspected that it might be the one I was looking for. However, I had no way to verify the info. I live about an hour from the Allen Co. (Indiana) Public Library & I think it's very likely that they have a copy of the Griswold book so I will check there. Thank you so much!

Cheryl Kerschner

I am quite sure that Daniel is the son of John GRISWOLD Jr. & Abigail WILLIAMS, who traces his line to Edward. Details can be found in "The Griwold Family, The First Five Generations" where Daniel is #785(1321) p.158. Vermont records show his birth as 15 Sep 1781, in Springfield, Vermont which does calculate a year off of the death date on his grave stone but he is the only Daniel of the right age and place. Daniel was the oldest with a younger brother also named "Willard."

Thank you so much! This seems to fit with the info that I have. I had read in a Miami Co. (Indiana) history book that Daniel possibly had a first wife. When I found Sarah's age, I knew she couldn't be John's mother. I only had the names of John & Willard but on the 1850 census, Sarah was living (after Daniel's death) with Willard & Sarah & Francis Bacon, also born in NY. I wondered if Sarah was a daughter. Do you know anymore about Daniel,
his parents or how he fits into the other Vermont Griswolds?
I believe that Daniel Griswold was married twice. First to Abigail MORGAN and probably had children: Ann, John c. 1805-1886, and Socrates c. 1806-1893; then m. 2nd) Sarah BARRY and had Sarah F., 1828 -1880+ and Willard, 1833-1904. Willard is actually used rather frequently within the GRISWOLD surname and is also used interchangable with William.

I am researching the Griswolds for a friend. Daniel Griswold, b. abt 1783 in Vermont, m. Sarah Berry. A son, John was b. abt. 1804/5 in Franklin Co. Vermont. A son, Willard was b. in Watertown NY although I'm not sure what year. They were in Indiana by 1844. Daniel is supposed to have been at Plattsburg in the War of 1812. I am curious about the name Willard as he was surely named for a relative & wondered if there could be a connection??

Cheryl Kerschner
ckersch@yahoo.com

I'm hoping you know one another as I have found some information on the whereabouts of this quilt.

In 2008, a family member requested and was granted permission to have the quilt refurbished and then she was to return the quilt to the Griswold Family Association, but at this date it has not been returned. For obvious reasons I am reluctant to post the name. The Association is working on contacting this individual for its return.

James;

My name is Juanita Goin. I am the genealogist for the John More Association in Roxbury, New York.

I am trying to track down the George Romilly that was married to Silvia Annunziata Gould in St. Georges, British West Indies.

Our family records only have his name, the marriage location and his death location which is listed as San Jose, Costa Rica.

In searching the records, the only George Romilly that comes up is one born about 1912 or 1913 based on two ships passenger lists. On the first George is listed as age 5 years 6 months, born in England. The second he is age 14, student, born Sussex, England. There is also a Brazil Immigration Card (with a photograph), showing his birth date as 02 December 1912 England. Parents listed on the immigration card are Cornelia Haven Peabody and George Romilly.

I am trying to confirm whether or not your George Romilly was married to Silvia Annunziata Gould. If your George is the correct one, I would like to know his birth, death, marriage and burial information.

Should you be interested in Silvia's ancestors, please feel free to ask. I am always willing to share my research and sources.

Thank you in advance for your time and efforts.

Juanita

Bill,
If this part of the ancestry is of interest to you then I suggest you consult The Greswold Family: 12 Generations in England. At this time it offers the best evidence of ancestry for Michael GRISWOLD. Please note that The Griswold Association disagrees with the use of ADAMS as Ann's surname. The only ADAMS in the area at that time with a daughter Ann, was Jeremy ADAMS, and she m. Robert SANFORD. Michael's spouse Ann remains with unknon parentage (at least in our records).

Hello,

I was recently given a copy of a family genealogy called " The Starkey Family of Saybrook ( Essex) Ct. and the Related Toocker Family. It was published by Margaret Buckbridge Bock and Pamelia Schwannecke Olsen. I looked inside to see if I saw a listing for Laura R. Toocker as well as any Toocker that started with R ( in case she was listed by middle name) but found nothing. There is a Daniel Griswold listed a few times but from the 1700's. The genealogy lists another genealogy as a source used that you might be interested in: The Griswold Family, England-America compiled by Glen E. Griswold and published by The Griswold Family association of America, Tuttle Publishing association, 1943.

I will be happy to look up anyone else for you in this genealogy. I am NOT connected to either starkey or Tooker and would love to get this back to a rightful decendent!

Kristen

Hello,
My great grandfather was Philander Aaron Griswold born 1873 in Ontario. His father was Willard, born 1841 Quebec, and his father was Samuel--no known date or place. Philander is a different name and yet I see several in the USA prior to the Revolutionary War. I think my Griswolds were United Empire Loyalists. Do you have any record of a Samuel Griswold born around 1800 plus or minus 20 years?
With thanks,
Nancy Whyte
Ontario

Yes, Daniel S. GRISWOLD is the son of Edmund & Martha (BIRDSALL) GRISWOLD. You can get details from "The Griswold Family, The First Five Generations" where Edmund is #322(605) p. 166. This publication is available at larger genealogical libraries or through the interlibrary loan program of the Family History Library.

Re: Need help finding Bathsheba Griswold's parents

In the book the Griswold Family, England - America orig publ about 1911 Bathsheba is shown as a descendant of Edward Griswold, the immigrant, thru George, Daniel I, Daniel II, and Daniel III. I don't know the parentage of Elizabeth Baldwin, her mother.
Also, recently discovered, she and her husband, Samuel Carver, III, moved from Bolton in the mid 1790's to Sherburne, Chenango, NY, where they had rwo more sons: Sylvester (1796-1893) and Parley (1799-1835). So Samuel Carver III, did not remarry to Lucy Tracy; it was probably his father, Lt. Sam II after his wife Rachel (Loomis) died in 1791.
Since this is a 2002 posting, I'd be surprised at a follow-up.

Searching for any info on Sarah Matilda Griswold. Believe she was born in Florida in 1845. Married Lycurgus Tullius Zander in Hartford, CT, in 1848. May have lived in Wisconsin subsequently. Moved to San Francisco by 1866. She had at least 1 son: William Edward Zander, (c.1860-1923). Don't know her parents, connection back to Roger Griswold through White Griswold, Daniel Griswold, if any. Don't know date of death. She was my great-great-grandmother. I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

Your Oliver descends from the Edward GRISWOLD line and yes you can find the ancestry in The Griswold Family, The First Five Generations from Edward to Solomon #238/492 (p.69). However, you will not find Oliver in the publications because at the time of printing we did not have him placed. I believe we may have corresponded in 2002, and even then he was not placed.

Yes, that is him and Henrietta in 1850, Cynthia is residing with children in New Hartford, Connecticut.

Besides the six children Oliver had with Cynthia (including your Corinth) he had 3 children with Harriet and 5 children with his 3rd wife, Adelaide GOEKEY.

Coralee

Thank you for the information. I've been stuck on Oliver B GRISWOLD for a while now.

Maurice's sister Corinth is my g-g grandmother. She married Watson ROOT on Dec 24, 1860 in New Hartford, Litchfield, CT. They had ten children - one of them was my g-grandmother Adeline (Addie), who married Alfred Tuttle of New Hartford.

I have the Civil War pension file for Watson ROOT. Depositions were taken when his widow Corinth applied for pension and she names her parents and siblings. She mentions her mother's death, but never anything more about her father, except his name (Oliver B GRISWOLD).

Did you find this information in one of the GRISWOLD family History books? I checked the 1850 census and found Oliver B living with a Harriet (19). Is this the "Henrietta" that you mentioned?

I do apologize for not getting back to you on this Griswold problem. I have been aware of the data that was put in the CT Mag. And, Many years ago, I did some deep research into the Eber Gris. family. But could find no connection to my Evaline S. Gris. Walker. In addition I have been side tracked by the Gris. Fam. Soc. in their assumption that Evaline S. was daughter of Jesse and Mary (Schoval) Griswold. No documentation found there, though I admit Evaline's middle initial might be a clue to her Mother's maiden name.
I think it is time for me to focus again on the possibility that Eber was Evaline's brother and they were both children of Vincent. My father's middle name, and his father's middle name was Vincent.Another big clue is that Evaline and Elias Walker sold their Wilson, Niagara land to Socrates Gris, before they left NY. BUT, there were so many Griswolds in Niagara at that time, including the one the Gris Soc suggests.
I am reminded that the 1850 Census shows both Elias and Eveline as born in Virginia!!, but I'm sure that was meant to be VT. Evaline died in 1851, so that is the only "good" data I have, though later readings indicate they were both born in NY.
We moved a few years ago, and I need to dig into boxes and find my material on Eber.
It is a breakthrough for me to have made contact with you, and "turningstones", and I am glad that you haven't given up on me.
How do you two feel about corresponding via email? That would be easier for me.

jwritter@aol.com

In The Connecticut Magazine - An Illustrated Bi-Monthly of January to December 1900, a Genealogical Query about Socrates Griswold was placed. I sent it to you via email, but I'm not sure you received it. It's quoted below.

Socrates was Evaline's brother, and they came from Rutland, VT. My cousin (turningstones) points out that there were many Griswold families in Vermont unrelated to us. She also mentions that there was an Ebenezer Griswold (different line than ours) who settled in Orwell, Rutland, VT -- and that perhaps Socrates and Evaline come from that family. Eber and Ebenezer were at that time understood to be the same name.

There were 7 Griswolds, in various towns, in the 1790 Rutland County, VT census. (See http://www.rays-place.com/census/rut-vt-2.htm.)

Excerpt:
The Connecticut Magazine
An Illustrated Bi-Monthly
Devoted to Connecticut ...

Vol VI
January to December 1900

GENEALOGICAL DEPARTMENT.
Querists are requested to write all names of persons and places so that they cannot
be misunderstood, to write on only one side of the paper, to enclose a self-addressed,
stamped envelope, and ten cents in stamps for each query. Those who are subscribers
will be given preference in the insertion of their queries and they will be inserted in the
order in which they are received. All matters relating to this department must be sent
to The Connecticut Magazine, Hartford, marked Genealogical Department. Give
full name and post office address.
It is optional with querist to have name and address or initials published.

( b ) Griswold—Cudaback.—Socrates
Griswold, b. Feb. 2, 181 1, Rutland, Vt.
Brothers and sisters were Horatio, La
Fayette, Ada ine, Evaline, Adelia and
perhaps Benjamin. His wife's name
was Lydia Cudaback. When were they
m. and what was his father's name and
ancestry?
M. M. O.
My apologies for missing your query. No, I don't know the names of Vincent Griswold's daughters, except for my ancestor C. Betsy Griswold, who was born about 1790 or perhaps as late as 1800. Betsy married Girden/Gurdon Taylor.

Thanks for your response, and the additional data. I'm afraid the Griswold Fam. Soc. still does have inaccuracies in it's work. They have suggested a possibility for the parentage of my Evaline S. Griswold Walker, and I am "holding" that. But, they can give me no specific documentation.
I mentioned that my Gr Gm Evaline gave a son the middle name Vincent, and that was carried on down to another generation. Also, one of Evaline's Gr sons was given the name Eber. So I have assumed that Eber Griswold of Niles, MI
had a connection with my Griswold-Walker line, living not far from Niles. And, of course they were all in Lockport at the same time. I still hope to make contact with other descendants of Vincent, of Lockport.
Well, at least a little has been added to this puzzle.
By chance did your line go to MI?
Feel free to contact me via my email, if you come across any "new" info. Many thanks, Julia jwritter@aol.com
