Dear Julie,

Elizabeth (Baker) Sanders passed away in 1945 when I was about 3 years old. We have various pictures of her. She had 4 children: Earl (my grandfather), Jessie, Mildred and William. William Sanders Jr. (The youngest) fought in World war I and came close to being gassed but he managed to get his mask on in time. He was short in stature, and carried messages. He died about 1979 (I think) at about 90+ years of age. He never married. My Great Aunt Jessie lived most of her married life next door to my Great Grandma. She had 2 children. My Great Aunt Mildred lived her married life in Belding, MI. She had three children, the youngest whom is still living. Earl passed away in about 1928 (I think) from TB. His wife Pauline (my Grandmother)died from it in 1918. They had 4 children, Dorothy (my mother), Carl, Vivian and Genny.

I don't know the names any of William Sander's brothers or sisters, but it would seem possible Libbie and Emma might be his sisters. According to my cousin (also your cousin) Paula there are numerous Baker's buried at the White Swan Cemetery which is in Montcalm or Kent Counties, Michigan, I think? I think that is where my Grandpa & Grandma Sanders are buried, but I am not sure.

Paula (her Grandma is Mildred) and I are planning to go to Elkhart in a few weeks to visit Osolo Township Cemetery where Israel and Frances Baker are buried. I don't live very far from there. My address is: 24 W. Chicago Street, Quincy, MI 49082.

Nice to hear from a distant relative who knows what happened to some of the Groff/Baker family. Any insights into Fannie Groff's family or background? I have an autograph album from the 1880's which belonged to Lillian M. Baker. In it are signatures from William Sanders (her brother-in-law), Libbie Sanders of Elkhart, IN and "Miss Emma Sanders, Edwardsburg/berg?, Michigan, Cass Co." Are Libbie and Emma sisters of William Sanders? Do you have a death date/place for Elizabeth Baker Sanders and more information on her children, if any?

Many thanks-
Julie

My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Baker, your Great Great Aunt. She married a man by name of William Sanders. They moved away from Elkhart, Indiana, and settled near Wabasis Lake in Montcalm County, Michigan. I think, but I am not sure, they moved here to follow more members of the Baker family who already had moved into this area.

Richard Kemler
"lizz239auc"

Fanny Groff of Lancaster, PA/Groff family history resources

Searching for info on Fanny/Fannie/Frances Groff, b. 1826 in Lancaster, PA, d. 1877 in Indiana. She married Israel Baker, also of Lancaster, PA, a Civil War veteran. Their children were: Aaron (19), Sarah (15), Alice/Allie (11), Elizabeth (7), Benjamin (6) and my G-Grandmother Lillian (aged 4),as of the US Census of 1870 for Indiana.

Groff is a prominent name in the Pennsylvania Dutch community of Lancaster, PA, along with Herr. The Groff and Herr families were the earliest pioneer Swiss families to come to America from Germany, after leaving Switzerland due to religious persecution. They received land grants from William Penn. Intermarriage among these pioneer families was common and confusing! See also: Google search on "Palatinate Diaspora" and www.horseshoe.cc/pennadutch/culture/index.htm for more information. The Herr family is extensively documented. See also: A Biographical History of Lancaster County, Being a History of Early Settlers, published in 1827, mostly available online.

Any help on Fanny/Fannie/Frances Groff is appreciated--

Henry B Groff and Susan Jane Morgan

On the 1860 Federal Census for Jefferson township, Maries County, Missouri, Henry B Groff and his wife, Susan (Morgan) are listed with three children: Benjamin, age 4 (born abt 1856); Mary age 3 (born 1857); Sarah, age 9/12. I have been able to document the life of Henry, Susan and their daughter Mary Ellen (went by Mollie) for the remainder of their lives. I can not find any documentation or facts pertaining to Benjamin or Sarah other than being listed on this 1860 census record.

Henry Burton Groff and Susan Morgan were married in Gascondade County, Missouri on 12 December 1850. Henry joined the Missouri Volunteers 11th Regiment of the Calvary to fight for the Union on 8 August 1863 at the age of 38. He was a cabinet maker then later became a painter. In 1870 he married Sarah Ann Hancock, a widow. Susan Morgan Groff married James Griffin Clay in 1865. I don't know with certainty if Henry and Susan were divorced or what. Family legend has it that she was notified that he had been killed in the War, so she remarried where in actuality he had merely been severely wounded. Documents show that he did have a scar from the the left side of his nose over his left eye. After Henry's marriage to Sarah, he moved his family to Columbus, Kansas and then later on to Los Angeles, California where he died in 1913. After Susan's marriage to James Clay, she eventually moved to Tarrant County, Texas where she eventually died.

Mary Ellen Groff married Calvin Reed in 1872 in Vernon County, Missouri. They eventually moved to Columbus, Kansas where they lived the rest of their days.

I can find no information about Benjamin Groff (dob abt 1856) or Sarah Groff (dob abt 1859).

Any information pertaining to this line would be greatly appreciated. I would especially like to find out what happened to the children, Benjamin and Sarah.

Lynda:

I am wondering if our Gross/Groff families are related?

My cousin recently sent me the following when checking the 1870 Perry County Ohio census:

Note that when looking for Gross also check for spelling as Groff - because I note that is how this enumerator spelled it. A holdover from the old style of double s. On the next page is an Ignatious Gross (57) and a Joseph Gross (31).

My Gross family has been spelled Groff in census records. We have Groff members included in our DNA Project. Contact me if your male Groff members are interested. My farthest known ancestor is Calvin Gross. Still looking for his parents and other relatives. I did find that he married his first wife, Martha M. Campbell in 1878 while in Perry County Ohio and he died in 1918 in Perry County.

Eva Groff; Olive Groff

Who were the parents of Eva GROFF SKUTT, Olive GROFF SKUTT, and Paul SKUTT?

There do not appear to be any links to their parents.
However, there is good circumstantial evidence.
And, the links, if true, all tend to support each other.

The death certificate of Truman Skutt lists his mother, wife of Daniel Skutt Sr. as being born Eva GROFF.
Various other records place Eva SKUTT as having been born in New York around 1783.

There is a record of an Eva Graff being born 12 Mar 1780, baptized 26 March 1780,
father Johannes Paulus Graaf, mother Margaretha Bowman, recorded by
Gilead Evangelical Lutheran Church Brunswick, Rensselaer, New York.

There is a reference in ROSE NEIGHBORHOOD SKETCHES that identifies the children
of Daniel Skutt. One of the childrens names is listed as "Apollos".
The locations of farms both in New York and in Michagan of Paul Skutt
are always very close to those of Daniel or a child of Daniel.

The death certificate of William H Skutt lists his mother, Truman's wife, as
having been born Olive GROFF. Various other records put her birth as being in
New York in about 1822.

To date, no reasonably matching record of Olive Groff born about 1822 in New York
has surfaced.

The *circumstantial* evidence and consistency of these links is interesting:

Primarily names. The transition of (De) Graaf to Groff is well established and
happened in this era. Paulus could easily have been rewritten into Apollos.
Paulus changed to Paul in the Graaf/Groff trees during this time. First names
were frequently handed down a line and Paulus (Apollos) would have crossed
from Graff to Skutt. On the Graff/Groff side we see, not too far away, Olive Wooster
(likely a married name) (re)married to a John P(aul) Groff
and having several children. There are trees that show Olive's mother as also
being named Olive. In the lists of children I have seen, there are about seven *boys
only* listed. More intriguing there is a four year gap 1820-1824 between two boys,
during which a birth (of Olive) *could* have occurred. Olive Skutt has a granddaughter
also named Olive. Most interestingly, the two Groff mothers listed on death
certificates would have fathers Johannes Paulus Graaf and John Paul Groff, different,
but very closely (but some trees vary on how).

I would be interested in hearing from any SKUTT or GROFF tree keepers who have
information, either supportive or problematic about these three links. I would
especially like to hear about the GROFF tree and try to get stronger facts there.

Thanks in Advance,

Cory F. Skutt

Hello,

My last name is Groff. Most of my Groff ancestors were German, from what I have been told by family members. The most common Germanic spelling would probably be Graf, depending on what part of Europe they came from. There will also be Groff, Grof, and probably even Groffe, Also don't forget some spelling may include those 2 little dots over the o call an umlaut.

Another clue to figure out where most of the Groff's came from, just look at where there are a lot of Groffs early on in the census maps. There you find a lot of the "Amish" Also known in PA a "Pennsylvania Dutch". How they got that name "Pennsylvania Dutch" was not because they were from Holland. But because they are "Deutche", German!! Most came from Deutcheland, Germany! People mistook it as Dutch land and thought they were saying they were Dutch. When in reality they were saying they were German!

I hope this helps!

Per California Digital Newspaper Collection online, Dec. 11, 1909 (San Francisco Call newspaper)
There is an article regarding the murder of Elsie Griffith Groff by her husband in Placer Co., CA. Daniel Groff was a wealthy rancher who lived in Auburn. Daniel accused Elsie of infidelity shortly after their marriage. He committed suicide after shooting her in the temple.

It was quite a tragedy. The article is lengthy and I suggest you look it up.

I know this is 11 years too late, but being a Groff descendant twice over, I think I can offer some info.First, in regards to Anna Groff who married Christian Burkholder, I come from this couple. Anna was born in the 1740's was Christian's birthdate is placed in the middle of that decade. Their son, my xt ancestor, Daniel, was born in 1770 & died in 1858. And he was the fourth child, so their children were only born between about 1756 & 1785. Anna was the daughter of Daniel, who was the son of Hans, who was the son of Marx, son of Jakob, son of Hans. That is the lineage given in the Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage from Apr 1990. Now, in regards to Veronica Groff married to Christian Burkholder.....I'm sure you've seen this, but the general consensus on rootsweb worldconnect is that she is the daughter of John Myers Groff & Christina Souder. John Myers Groff was the son of Marcus Groff & Veronica Myer. Marcus was the son of Marcus Groff & Anna Huber. This Marcus was the brother of my Daniel, who were sons of Hans Groff & Susanna Kendig. Hans' lineage I already gave. So in all, we would be distant cousins via the Groff family. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more info regarding the lineage at least.

Did either source give a middle name or surviving relatives or parent's full names? I thought MennObits would have something, but they don't. Thank you for posting that. At least now I know when he died. Though I don't know where he's buried yet. I know his sister Anna is in Groffdale. Don't know about Barbara and a possible brother, Daniel.

Daniel Groff, ca 1714-1772, Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa

I am descended from this individual, among other Groff's. He is a son of Hans Groff & Susanna Kendig. Info I am seeking is the maiden name of his wife, Mary/Mary Ann. They married in the 1730's, having among their other children, Anna, who married Christian Burkholder. These two are also ancestors of mine. Siblings of Anna include Barbara, Christian, and possibly a Daniel. Being that Daniel Sr didn't have immediate family with the name of Christian, I'm guessing he named his son after Mary's father, grandfather, or brother. though I can't begin to guess what her last name might have been. I've made a recent search of anyone named Christian who died in Earl Twp, but none of them were old enough to be her father. Family names included Zimmerman, Good, Carpenter, Wenger, Long, Sensenig and Graybill. I know she isn't a Witwer or a Holl, families who also lived in the area. Does anyone have an idea as to the identity of Mary's parents? Guessing they lived in either Ephrata, Earl, Warwick, or Leacock twps. Any help would be greatly and exceedingly appreciated.

I think he may have been the son of Daniel & Mary Groff who lived in Earl or near Groffdale. I come from them too. Am racking my brain trying to find out who Mary's father was. She doesn't seem to match up with any family that lived in the area. I know Christian was born in the 1740's. so his given age sounds about right. He's the only Christian Groff born in the area too There was a couple other ones though. One was born about 1690 and the other in Virginia. So that definitely has to be Daniel & Mary's son and grandson of Hans Groff, the pioneer of Earl Twp.

Groffs of Missouri and Kansas

I am searching for information about my great great grandmother's family. Her name was Mary Ellen Groff, born in 1857 to Henry B and Susan (Morgan) Groff in Maries County, Missouri. I have identified a brother, Benjamin (age 4) and a sister, Sarah (age 9/12's) on the 1860 census but have been unable to locate her or any of her immediate family members on the 1870 census. According to what Mary Ellen told her granddaughter, her father, Henry, was reported killed during the Civil War while he was actually only wounded. Her mother, Susan, subsequently remarried thinking herself a widow. Henry later turned up and Mary Ellen went off with him. I have identified where Henry later remarried and raised a second family in Cherokee County, Kansas where my gg-grandmother and her husband, Calvin Reed settled. I am very interested in finding out who Susan Morgan Groff married and where she settled with her children from her marriage to Henry Groff.

Can you tell me in what year your Benjamin Groff was born? I am trying to locate the brother and sister of my great great grandmother, Mary Ellen (Mollie) Groff. The only record I can find of them is the 1860 census that shows Henry B Groff, his wife Susan (Morgan) and three children, Benjamin (age 4), Mary (age 3) and Sarah (age 9/12) in Maries County, Missouri. From information Mary Ellen told her granddaughter, her father was reported killed during the Civil War and her mother remarried. Her father actually was injured and returned home after her mother had remarried. Mary Ellen went off with her father and didn't see her mother again until after her marriage to Calvin Reed. Could your Benjamin and Henry be my gg-grandmother's immediate family?

I have information on Abraham - i can't get back any further either. My Great-great-grandfather was Franklin Groff and I believe that Abraham and Franklin were related. Though I don't know how. Abraham was a shovel maker and was born in 1820 Mary Ann was born in 1822 - they had 5 girls: Rebecca, Mary Ann (married Samual Henderson), Ruth Annie, Isabela, Sarah (your grandmother born 1855) and 1 boy named Fenton. The 1880 census showed them living at 53rd St, in Philadelpha, Pa. I have Franklin's Civil War Records but he did not put down his parents names, Mary Ann signed him out of the service when he went home. He had been in Andersonville Prison for 6 mths before was let out of the service. I thank you for the information about Abraham - I will send for his Civil War records maybe it will reveal more information than Franklin's records. Keep in touch if you find anything. I also have Peter Stout living with Abraham and Mary Ann with Charlotte Stout and Lovenia Stout also living in the house. I can sent you the census if you contact me.

Would be interested in this family crest. I have had great difficulty tracing my Groff/Graf family in Germany...there are so many. My great grandfather August Groff/Graf left Leuschentin, Pommern, with his family departing from Hamburg by the Ship Augusta Victoria on October 2, 1891 for New York. Does any one have any leads on this family line?

I am looking for information about the GROFF family that lived in Queen Anne's County, MD.

Anna M. GROFF was born Oct. 31,1900 in Millington, Queen Anne's County, MD. Her middle name is listed at Mollie on a WW1 Draft Registration filed by one of her children, and as Manda on a MD death registration. The cursive is difficult to read. She married TEAT and had several children with him.

In the late 1930s, Anna was hospitalized for tuberculosis, and met and married Ambrose CHALLMES, with whom she had one daughter before she passed away on Sept. 3, 1943.

There may have been a falling out between Ambrose CHALLMES and Anna's children and the TEAT family upon her death.

I am interested in finding Anna's grave, as well as any information I can on the history of the GROFF and TEAT families in Maryland.

THANKS!

I no longer look for Groff's . I descend from John groff of Manor township Lancaster Co PA who died in 1765. His daughter Barbara born in 1728 married my 5th great grandfather Paul Wilt back in 1753 and there ends my Groff line that is well documented in the Groff Books. I hope you will be able to see the Groff Books. Perhaps closest to you as a large library would be the one in Minneapolis who may have them. they are extremely well documented sources. I have been doing genealogy for close to 40 years and do use ancestry. Good luck. Elaine from Wisconsin
