Dear Robert,

I'm so glad for your response. I am the son of your half-brother, Roger (was known as Melvin Groom at birth). Your father is my biological Grandfather who I am just now learning about.

I would love to hear more. This is a side of my heritage that I was never privy to. My Dad has been very helpful with what information he has, finally, after years of hinting about my curiosity. I am discovering a whole new set of relatives that I never knew existed, which is very exciting to me!

My email address is SteveS743@aol.com Would love to hear from you. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.

Steve

Thomas Groom; Lancaster County, PA

Looking for the parents of Thomas Groom (abt.1820 PA - 1891 Lewes, DE) Owned Glen Flouring Mills in West Hempfield Township, and apparently had a mansion in West Hempfield. He appears to have lived in Lancaster County most of his life and is buried at Mount Bethel Cemetery in Columbia. I believe he is related to George Groome (1806-1886) who married Catherine Arms. Thomas and George were both living in Beccaria, Clearfield County, PA on the 1860 Census, but were back in Lancaster County by 1870. Trying to find the connection between these two families!!!

Groom family - Ireland > Binghamton, NY

I am trying to find information on my great grandmother, Catherine (Groom) Wacks' family, who lived in Binghamton, NY. Born 1858 (NY), died 1923 (Binghamton, NY area), married John Wacks. She had a son John Wacks (b. 1900)-my grandfather, and a daughter Catherine Agnes (Wacks) Simmons (b. 1899). She had brothers – Thomas, Roger, James, possibly other siblings. I would like to learn about her parents and further back if possible. According to census data her parents were born in Ireland. There are a couple Groom families in the Binghamton area at that time (early 1900) from Ireland that share the same first names. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Trying to find more information on Glen Dewey Groom, b 24 Aug 1898 in Saginaw or Midland County, MI. Married Bernice Shaler and had four children by her.

I cannot find any photos or many other reliable records. He is my paternal grandfather. He and Shaler gave up their four children to the Saginaw Children's Home in the 1930's. (Paul, Betty, Arlene and Private.)

I have been able to trace Shaler to her death in California. I find it highly unlikely that Glen Groom is still living but cannot confirm his death.

Am especially interested in finding the story of why they gave up their kids to clear up family rumor and why there is so little information on him regarding any second marriages as I know he had more children by another wife. (Why would you have more when you gave up four other children?)

Feel free to see his info on my family tree, I've attached what records I have to his profile.
I am pretty sure I am a direct descendant of Zachariah from King & Queens Co VA via Groometown NC and mt 3x great grandfather Zachariah Groome married to Lavinia Jane Whittenmore. Son of Carter Robert Groome b.1794 Middlesex VA who was married to Mary "Polly" Butler of Maryland b.1798. Carter Robert was son of Zachariah Groome and Elizabeth Wyett(maybe Wyatt).
I have written somewhere about a land grant or something in Guilford County NC, Groometown NC, that it was a land grant but that could be mistaken because I believe Guilford is in Granville District and it was way crazy as far as grants and patents on land.

I understand that Major Groom was born in VA c1761 and came on to Caldwell Co KY c1815. If your known lineage goes back to 1767, you ancestors may have been in the household of John Groom (Sr) of Spotsylvaia Co VA, Major's father, or perhaps that of Major's wife--Christina Bibb. There is a family legend that John Groom married in England and stopped off at Barbados on the way to VA. I have been curious about that stopover and wondered if there were family or holdings on the island. At any rate it might be a good place to look. My research hasn't gotten past VA yet! Good luck with your research.

O.K.
I am a descendant of former slaves of Major Grooms. My GGGGGreat Grandmother was Ester Grooms born 1767 in Virginia and moved to Caldwell Ky with the Grooms family in the early 1800s. My cousind and I have been at this atleast 20 years. We have done a phenominal job at tracing our family lines. However, we can't get beyond Ester. If she was born in the Virginia in 1767, then her parents were in Virginia in 1767. This information (as impossible as it seems) is what we are searching for. Let's just say "We are trying to go Alex Haley on this"...All the way back.....

Is there any slave info available?????

Have read the bio sketch that Michael gave - question some of it???? He was my gggrandfather and his sister Martha was my gggrandmother on the other side. I have tried going through the Rev.
LL - Don't know how much farther you have gotten in your search, but I found this yesterday with a cemetery full of "Solomon" family links on Findagravedotcom. On the web page for Michael A. Groom (memorial# 32737358) I found this bio information in the comments section. It lists some history info for Nancy Hutchison's father.
Find the post here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=32...

Scroll to the bottom and look at the comments.
Thought you might be interested.

Elizabeth

------------------------------------------------------
Flowers left for Michael Groom

Portrait and Biographical Record of Clay, Ray, Carroll, Chariton and Linn Counties, Missouri containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens, Together with Biographies and Portraits of all the Presidents of the United States, published by Chapman Bros., Chicago 1893. Clark Co. Michael A. Groom, a prosperous and extensive general agriculturist and a successful stock-raiser, residing upon section 3, township 52, range 32, Clay County, Mo., is widely known as an energetic and reliable citizen, liberal and progressive, and ever ready to assist in local improvements and enterprise. Our subject was born upon his father's farm, two miles west of Liberty, in 1834. He is the son of Joseph and Nancy (Hutchison) Groom, his father being a native of Virginia, but reared in Clark County, Ky., to which State Grandfather Groom had emigrated from the Old Dominion in the latter part of the eighteenth century. Joseph Groom was the youngest son of his parents , and remained at home until the death of his mother, who survived her husband many years. In early manhood, while residing in Clark County, Ky., he married the daughter of Col. Hutchison, a native Virginian, but an early pioneer of Kentucky, and a hero of Revolutionary fame, having fought with great gallantry in the War of Independence, and as Colonel of his regiment, cheering his men on to victory. Some time between 1821 and 1824, Joseph Groom emigrated with his wife and family to Clay County, Mo., and, journeying slowly by wagon, reached the desired destination with the small pecuniary capital of fifty cents, but rich in hope, energy and native resolution. By his thrift and intelligent industry he gradually accumulated valuable property, and owned two hundred and eighty acres of highly improved land. At the time of the "Mormon War" in Missouri, this sturdy pioneer settler shouldered his gun, and ably defended his people and property for a few days. Ten children came into the happy home, and but two died young. The sons and daughters were: Robert; Francis M.; John S.; Mary, wife of Charles Woods; Michael A., our subject; Martha, wife of John Kincaid; Porter F.; and Belle, wife of John Pickett. The father of our subject reached the good old age of ninety-two years, and was well preserved in mind and body up to the time of his death. Michael A., our subject, remained with his parents until he had attained his majority, and received his education in the old log schoolhouse, a prominent feature n the early history of Clay County. In 1861, the beginning of the Civil War, he entered the State Guard, under Gen. Price, and served in Col. Thompson's regiment, Capt. Groom's company. In 1862 he entered the regular Confederate service, in the Trans-Missouri Department. He fought in many of the leading battles of the war, and remained in active service until the surrender, when he returned to his home and again resumed agricultural duties. November 5, 1867, he was united in marriage with Miss Emma P., daughter of D. J. Adkins, of Clay County, but in 1882 lost the faithful wife and loving mother, who had borne him seven children, one of whom died young. Elma, the eldest, is the wife of Ed Watkins; Ruth is the wife of Walter Pryor; Minnie and Lizzie. The present wife of Mr. Groom was Mrs. Amelia Collins, widow of the late Jesse B. Collins, of Clay County, and daughter of James M. Watkins. Mrs. Groom had two children by her first husband, Jesse B. and Martha J. Collins. Since her marriage with Mr. Groom, she has become the mother of a little daughter, Louise. Our subject is a valued member of the Christian Church, and politically, belongs to the Alliance party, but has always been a strong Democrat. Financially, he has been greatly prospered, and, winning his way steadily upward, now owns a fine farm of three hundred acres, all under a high state of cultivation. He has further improved his homestead by building a magnificent brick house and an excellent barn and substantial outbuildings. A lifetime resident of the county, Mr. Groom has been from early years associated with the growth and progress of his portion of the State, and, commanding the respect of the entire community, has a host of sincere friends.
- Peggy Lovelace Contreras
Added: Feb. 25, 2011

Virginia Tax Rolls, K&Q co. 1790 - 1800

Found a cool resource this week for online access to the 1790 and 1800 Virginia tax rolls. The website is:
http://www.binnsgenealogy.com/VirginiaTaxListCensuses/1790in...

I surveyed the tax records available for all mentions of Grooms in King & Queen county divided by land and property and have summarized my findings below.

Groom land holders in King & Queen Co:
In 1790 there are four land holders listed individually in the King & Queen records. Robert Groom with 100ac; Mary Groom with 173ac; Barbara Groom with 100ac and Zachariah Groom with 187ac. The listings are grouped alphabetically by letter of the last name. Robert and Mary’s listings appear one after the other and Barbara and Zachariah’s listings are also together sequentially but 2 entries down the list from Robert and Mary.
In 1798 only Mary and Zachary are listed, each holding the same number of acres as in 1790. There is no listing for either Robert or Barbara.

Grooms listed in personal property records in King & Queen Co.
In 1790, in King & Queen County Mary Groom is listed as a “person chargeable with tax” and she lists Samuel Groom as a white male titheable. (over the age of 16) in her household. Her listing also lists 2 black titheables, 1 black between the age of 12 and 16 and 2 horses. Barbara Groom has her own listing with no name of any white male, but 2 black titheables and 1 horse. Robert Groom is also in the list with a titheable named Robert Groom, his household includes 1 black titheable, 1 black under 16 and 2 horses. Zachh Groom is listed as a white titheable in the household of Gregory Smith along with 2 others. The smith household lists 16 black titheables, 2 under the age of 16 and 8 horses.

In 1799, the only Grooms listed on the personal tax rolls for King & Queen County are Richard Groom and John Grooms. Richard lists one white titheable and one black between 12 and 16. John lists one black under 16.

Nearby Counties
There is a Samuel Groom in nearby Gloucester County in 1800 who registers both on the property and land tax rolls with 133 acres, and a John Groom who registers only on the personal tax roll. This John Groom may also be the same John Groom on the Gloucester tax roll ten years earlier (in 1789) with similar holdings. In the Virginia records for 1790, there are at least 4 separate John Grooms with individual listings for personal tax in Middlesex, Orange, Amherst and Farquier Counties. In Culpepper county there is a John Groom in 1791 and a John Grooms in 1801. Further potential listings for our John include a Jonathan Groom in Bedford county in 1789 and a John Groome in Goochland in 1789 and 1801.
The tax rolls for Grooms are completed by a William Groom Sr, Robert Groom and Richd in Louisa County in 1798, a William and a Henry M. in Goochland in 1789, a Wm Groom in Orange Co. in 1790. Lastly in 1802 Ann Groom appears in Goochland Co. and Henry W Groom is listed in Albermarle County.

As you are aware, be careful with internet information as much is not fully substantiated. I'm not familiar with a John Groom of Southhampton England, but the dna of a descendant of the Englishman John Groom of Spotsylvania Co VA c1750 does not match to several well documented descendants of Solomon Groom of Clark Co KY. At this time we are trying to firm up the connection of one participant who thinks they are from the William and Sarah Parker Groom of Boubon Co KY line. This participant matches with the Solomon Groom line, so this connection will be invaluable to a lot of folks if it is true. There are biographies that state William Groom of Boubon Co KY was from England. At this time, we have some big IFs, but some conclusive dna information.

Expand on these scenarios if you will. I'm new on here, but the Soloman line dead end has been going on as far back as 1978 from my first interest in the line.
I see some A.com trees that link him now to John from Southhampton, Eng. However, I don't see any support in the docs for this.

What's the latest on this.

Alfred, George, Edgar, John S., John, William, Soloman is mine.

I believe Solomon Grooms (1754-1810) and William Grooms (1750-
abt 1811) are brothers. I have found mention of a William and Solomon Grooms in Washington County, Pennsylvania in the 1780' and 1790's who could be our ancestors.
1790 US census
Name: Solomon Grooms
County: Washington
State: Pennsylvania
1 male over 16, 3males under 16 , 4 females
if this is the correct Solomon Grooms, then I am
probably missing some children (I believe this is the
correct Solomon Grooms) he and family move
to Kentucky soon after this census

A Solomon Groom(s) in Washington County, Pennsylvania in
1782 First Battalion, recruited from Castile Run

Castile Run is a stream in what is now Morgan township in
Greene County, Pennsylvania

both Solomon and William Grooms in 1786 tax list for
Morgan township, Washington County, Pennsylvania
(I believe this is my Solomon Grooms, but need more
confirmation) I believe this William is Solomon's brother

This is all speculation at this time, but these Groom brothers of Pennsylvania supposedly moved to Kentucky, with some of their neighbors. It may be something to explore

Carol H.

Soloon and Sarah Grooms referred to in this thread are found in Kentucky records. Quite a bit of info about Solomon including his will are available. More difficult to document is exactly where he was before he appeared in KY. Recent DNA evidence links him to William Grooms, probably a brother, also found in Kentucky. There is a printed account that states William was born in England. Just haven't seen enough documentation to satisfy me as to Solomon's origin yet. I am descended through his son, Joseph, who after death of his mother Sarah migrated with his wife, Nancy Hutchison, to Clay County, Missouri.

Hi Ann, while it looked like they were brothers from all the evidence - names, movement, etc., I was pleased to see the DNA results that showed they were probably siblings. That may mean that Solomon was also born in England, if we are to believe the article which states William was born there. As I said before I have seen a lot of speculation, and a lot of people attribute them to different parents/areas/etc. So far I haven't seen the evidence to convince me. Certainly would like to, if anyone has it!

Do we have documented proof that William of Bourbon Co KY and Solomon of Clark Co KY were brothers? I have two participants in our Groom/Grooms/Croom/Crume dna project at familytreedna.com with matching dna that might suggest they were siblings. My line is not matching with them at all, but I am keenly interested in the research. There are several of us who are matching back to the John Groom of Spotsylvania Co VA and the Robert Groom of King and Queen Co VA, both mid 1700s, and that suggests a strong tie between these two men as well. All of the lines seem to have come on to the Clark Co/Fayette Co KY area by 1800-1810 or so. Sure makes for some interesting tangles! Would appreciate your feedback.

Understand your quandry as the article is pretty confusing. It begins talking about William who married Sarah Parker and then midway switches to discussing the exploits and family of his son Jacob who married Sarah "Sally" Quick. As to William being born in England - this is the one source that states that, there does not seem to be other reliable documentation at this time. Certainly lots of speculation, however. It is very frustrating for those of us descended from William and his brother Solomon (my ancestor.) Good luck with your searching.

William Groom and Sarah Parker?

On several family trees, William Groom and Sarah Parker are listed as the parents of Abraham Groom. They have his birth as Virginia and his death in Bourbon Kentucky. Wondering why he shows up in the book: Pioneer Families of Missouri. It identifies him as marrying Sarah Parker, then Sally Quick. Children listed are the same as on the family trees. Yet the article states he was involved in politics after the trees have him deceased. It says all but his daughter Susan moved to Missouri. The book also claims it was William who emigrated from England. The date of the book is 1876. YOu can find the book with the images of pages online at:
http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/webbin/book/lookupid?ke...
The pages I refer to are 260 and 261.
You could try taking your document to a photographer and/or a computer graphic designer. They may be able to enhance the image for you.

Otherwise his other military records would have info, of course, but you would need a next-of-kin to request them for you. Next-of-kin is defined as the unremarried widow or widower, son or daughter, father or mother, brother or sister of the deceased veteran.

See:

http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/g...

If you can't get the next of kin to request info, then only limited amounts of information are available.

I currently am putting together a scrapbook and that would be really nice to have for it. It tells where he's been and awards he earned and all kinds of information. I just would like to have a read-able copy.

Are there other records that contain this kind of information?

What information are you trying to get from it? Perhaps that information is available through another type of record.

Elizabeth Grooms Osborn (Dunnington) was believed to be a full-blooded Cherokee Indian. Does anyone have any information about this...her, or pictures of anyone in the line?
Dear Deborah,
I was wondering if you ever located the book "The Amazing History of the Grooms in America". I would be most interested myself as I count the Marion you were referring to as the son of Aaron Groom and his 2nd wife Martha "Patsey" Quick, of Montgomery Co. Mo.

Sincerely,
Vicki Piper
