I am the ggg grandaughter of Valentine Gross. Would like to know if it would be possible to get a copy of the diary? At my expense of course. This may help me in my research. The fact that his name changed is interesting . The census are defintely inconsistant with info.

I am not sure if we connect. My Daniel Gross married a Sophia Dorothea Aigler. So I don't know if the 1756 birth date is correct. but Windsor Twp and Tulpehocken are the correct locations in the sense that , those areas are where Sophia Dorothea's parents lived. There seems to be more than one Henry Gross. I am descended from the daughter of a Daniel Gross, who's name was Anna Maria Grossin. There is also a JOhn Daniel Gross, so I don't know if that is a different Daniel or not.

Re: Gross in Maine

Last August, 2011, I corresponded thru the ancestry.com messages with Carolyn Lipska, whom I believe is your sister. She confirmed that Mamie Ryan, your grandmother was married to Eugene W Gross.
Mamie Ryan was the daughter of Captain Lewis Ryan and his wife Martha Hopkins, thus the connection to my Hopkins tree.
Martha's father was Spencer Hopkins, who left Maine in the 1840's for the Mexican War, only to die of yellow fever in New Orleans, where he is buried.
Spencer was the son of Dt Theophilus Hopkins, a Revolutionary War surgeon who moved to ME after the War, with Martha Spencer, his last wife. He had 4 wives, and 17 children. He was from Cape Cod, and was a direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower voyages.
My tree says you are the 8th great granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins of the Mayflower!
Now, as to your Gross ancestry...Eugene's W in his name was no doubt for Wooster, as his father was Captain Samuel Gross, who married Mercy Wooster Smith, daughter of a well known shipping master out of Owl's Head ME, Wooster Smith.
I feel strongly that Samuel Gross is somehow related to Edward Trueworthy Gross and wife Irene Treat, who had children named Eugene and Edmund. He lived in Orland, Hancock County ME, where many Gross families lived, all up from Cape Cod, esp Truro. More on this later. Have you learned any more? I will be writing Carolyn as well later this week, as time is tight for me at work this week.
Cousins Always, Dr bill Hopkins

John and Henry are recurring names in my Gross line. But we're told that our forebears came from Maryland. Did any of your family migrate from PA to MD in the late 1700s or early 1800s? Apparently when what was perceived as a mixed-race marriage took place, that line was cut off from the rest. Does anyone have any info on this? Would greatly appreciate any documentation or even family lore on this branch. Thank you.
Tommie

I am descended from Daniel Gross, b. 1765 through his daughter Maria. I noticed you had information posted on a Henry Gross, b. 1746 his father and also a grandfather John Jacob from Mannheim, baden-Wuerttemburg. I was wondering if you had info on which of these was an immigrant to the US. I would like to find date of arrival and the ship, etc.

Also in my research on Daniel's wife. It looked like Sophia Dorothea's surname was Aiglet, but since there was only people named Aigler in the Tulpehocken area, I am using that spelling.

I am also related to Valentine Gross through Carl Gross, his son Ralph was my grandfather. My Grandmother told me that they had Valentines Diary. That it was in German and that one day they would like to have it translated. I don't know where this diary is, Grandpa and Grandma have passed away. They did say that Valetine's last name changed when he went through Elis Island. From Grofs to Gross. I too am stuck. I can not find his parents information. IF any one has this please let me know. Thanks

I realize your post was just about a year ago, but am wondering if you received the answers you were looking for regarding Valentine Gross? Valentine is my Great-Great Grandfather. My Great Grandfather is Otis Gross. If you have information regarding his birth place(Germany I know, but would like to know a town)or arrival in the United States I would really love to get this information. Based on census data, his place of birth is inconsistent. I'm not sure if that is the census takers inaccuracy or some other reason. I am curious about your comment regarding him working his way her by boat. Did he have siblings for other family with him? Anyway, I would love to hear from you.

In the German language there is a character in the alphabet that is called, phonetically, "estsett" and resembles an English capitol B, except that it has a "top-notch" on the vertical projection of the B that resembles the lowercase "f" without the cross-line. This "estset" is the replacement of a double ("ss") in the language, not too much unlike the double-u is replaced by the "W" in English.
So the German "GroB" (with the top notch) is, in English, Gross

There was never any mention or record associated with the father and mother of Hanna Gross Dixon. I have one record that shows the father and mother of Hannah living in Pittsburg Ks. abt 1905 and the Census only shows one grandchild: Blanche V Dixon. Off hand I don't remember if it was 1905 or 1910 census, but it is a good reference showing only one grandchild. Family members never spoke of any other child. I have several photos taken abt 1920 showing the grandmother and Blanche with other family members.
Are you in the Pittsburg, Kansas area?
The draft registration was found on ancestry.com and not with a google search. The trick is to search by a partial name. As you can see he was listed as Rob not Robert. If you search for Robert it won't find it. If you search for Rob* it will search for the Rob only and then anythin that comes after that. Sometimes Robert is abbreviated as Robt or Rob't.

You must use the "soundex" search function in the surname as well as the partial with the *. First names do not have soundex searching only full and partial *.

I hope this has been helpful.

Thank you for replying. Hannah was married to a William James Dixon ??The first and middle name could be reversed. Hannah supposedly died with her husband in some kind of flash flood or flooding creek in eastern Kansas; I have yet to find any record of event and have not found any death certificates on either of them. Both Hannah and her husband died about 1899 and their daughter Blanche V Dixon{ my grandmother} was left to be raised by her grandparents. Kansas has very poor records from 1895 to 1900. It is very frustrating and I am indeed up against a wall of this. I work it a while and have to quit getting so disgusted. If you have anything, even a strain of info I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you again, Bob Reese

Also, Hinshaw's records does not list John Henry as a child of William Calvin and Delilah Dennis. Note that John Henry's tombstone shows a birthdate of 3/6/1804.

This is not my family. I hope this is helpful.
